Oceania - Travel Highlights and Travel Tips

Holidays to Oceania will introduce you to a collection of islands connected by the great Pacific Ocean. Included in its vast expanse of sandy shores and coral reefs are some of the world’s most international cities, such as Melbourne, as well as some of the most remote places in the world such as Pitcairn Island.

Despite being tucked away in a corner of the world map, Oceania is one of the ultimate travel destinations in the world. With thousands of gap-year backpackers and luxury travellers alike flocking to this stunning part of the world, a trip to Oceania offers something for everyone within its undefined borders.

Travel Highlights

  • Pick an activity and explore part of the 350,000km2 that make up the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkel, scuba dive, sail or fly over this rich underwater world that is vital to our Earth’s wellbeing.
  • Snap an Instagram worthy picture of the famous salt-water pools at Bondi Beach before swimming a few lengths while waves crash over the side.
  • Witness a colourful and rousing festival in Papua New Guinea. The Goroka Festival is the longest running cultural show in Papua New Guinea. More than 100 indigenous tribes will performs traditional songs, dances and rituals over the country’s independence day weekend.
  • Follow the ancient songlines of Uluru rock and follow in the footsteps of Australia’s aboriginal peoples.
  • Leave the sandy shores behind and head conquer the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers of New Zealand. Partake in some winter sports and carve clean lines with your skis or snowboard through the pure white snow.
  • Get stuck into the Suva Municipal Market, Fiji and see how many weird and wonderful produce you can spot.
  • Watch the explosive geysers of Rotorua’s geothermal area.
  • Watch the fearsome All Blacks, New Zealand’s world-renowned rugby team.

Travel Tips

  • Travelling Oceania is going to require some air time. Most of the regions are only accessible by plane, and if overland routes are available they’re usually very long.
  • Generally, warmer summer months of November to March are the best time to visit southern Australia and New Zealand. The northern half of Australia is best visited between April and October, to avoid the rainy season. Likewise for most of the Pacific Islands.
  • Oceania is huge. So it’s often better to pick a few main activities you want to experience, instead of trying to do everything.
  • Australia has it’s very own plug-socket. Similar to an American socket, but a bit slanted, you’ll want to make sure you have the right adaptor.
  • Tipping isn’t mandatory in most of Oceania. You can if you want, but not many people expect you to.
  • Many of the countries, from Australia to Papua New Guinea, is very expensive for tourists. Budget accordingly.
  • The sun in Oceania is exceptionally strong, and parts of Australia have the highest levels of skin cancer in the world. Better to be safe than sorry and slather on that sunscreen!

One of the best trips I've been on

What a fantastic experience. The day was well planned (apart from not knowing when the next Whale would appear ) and the information was very well presented. Highly recommended everyone that visits San Francisco to book on this trip but also check out other trips that are available with the Oceanic Society's. This will stay with me forever.

My husband and I have wanted to go on this excursion for a long time, and we were finally able to get away. Wow! And Wow! The weather was perfect and the ocean was relatively calm. I realize these conditions are at the whim of Mother Nature and that your experience may vary. We followed all of the suggestions regarding how to prepare and what to bring. I used a scopolamine patch (applied it the night prior to the trip) and it worked like a charm to prevent seasickness. We brought layers of clothing and rain panchos (which came in handy early in the trip when there was substantial spray). The naturalists, Roger and Michael, were warm, welcoming, and very, very informative. We saw an abundance of wildlife of all types on the Island and in the air and water, and for a while we didn’t know where to focus because there was substantial activity all around the boat. Michael captured exceptional photos, a real bonus. I highly recommend this trip for your soul and to support the Oceanic Society’s conservation efforts.

I learned very much on this long boat trip. I saw a large male Steller sea lion for the first time on our way there. I heard the distinctive barking of California Sea lions (and their screeching and squealing). I also heard the guttural call of the Steller sea lions. It was a very remote and interesting island chain. Oceanic Society takes pictures for no additional money when I went on their last trip in November 2022. They have a large camera with a gigantic telephoto zoom lens which is capable to zoom in from very far away. Through the photos, I saw fur seals and elephant seals for the first time as well even though I was unable to see them with my own eyes. The pictures were very much appreciated. We saw humpback whales as well. It would have been awesome to have seen gray whales, but they have no control over nature. It was very cold and a long, exhausting trip for me as I arrived in San Francisco the day before. I had to nap in the cabin on the return to port but am very happy I went. Dress like you are going skiing and not like you are going to the beach. Bring food and water. I think I will go on another trip with them, if I return to the area and if time permits and if I return in warmer months.

This trip exceeded our expectations. We were very lucky to get on the water in good weather with smooth sailing and to see a large number of orca and hunchback whales, and a variety of bird species. The photographs our leader/researcher (Michael) sent after are amazing! He was very knowledgeable and open to answering questions as they came up as was the skipper and another individual who was a bird expert. The tour is small and the other individuals were like minded, interested in the sights and the environment! I would absolutely recommend this trip with the Oceanic Society.

Absolutely exceeded our expectations! We did a trip with Oceanic Society in Puerta Vallarta a couple years ago, and I was hooked on whale watching ever since. The day we went to the Farallon Islands was spectacular. We lucked out with amazing weather and calm seas. We saw several humpbacks, aver 15 orcas, a gray whale, seals, sea lions, more than a dozen albatross, and puffins…the real reason I wanted to go on this trip! The crew was spectacular- especially Michael! They prepped us well in advance and made the trip very comfortable. I don’t typically get sea sick but heeded their advice to take half a Dramamine just to be safe. We lucked out with incredibly calm seas, but they’re not always that lucky. Take the Dramamine just in case! These guys are fantastic conservationists and really help you catch the fever during the experience. Soooo well worth the money. Please remember to tip the crew!!

oceanic tours

I've always dreamt of taking an oceanic tour with either professionals or knowledgeable enthusiasts. I noticed the Oceanic Society site last winter accidentally, almost immediately booked a tour for the fomenting season and was never disappointed. 7 5hrs of the best views of the SF Bay, Marin Headlands and California Cost, Farallon Islands, and the outer Pacific waters, plenty of birds, including albatrosses, smart seals, sea lions, and, of course, humongous grey whales. At first, it was not very easy to spot them, but, eventually, we met a couple (or rather they noticed us?) The gigantic creatures started to swim in circles around the "Salty Lady", appeared on the surface to release a fountain of the air and dispersed water, examined us thoroughly, but in a very friendly manner. In half an hour, they shook their flippers and signalled farewell with their flukes. Our hosts, Michael and Gayle, were exceptionally knowledgeable and shared many interesting facts during the voyage. Michael also took pictures (that was an advantage, because of rolling it was hard to capture the moments with one free hand and the sun shining into the face) and shared them afterwards. Prior to your tour, do not ignore their recommendations to take warm clothes (I was also smart enough to take gloves with me), sun glasses, a tight hat or hoodie. If you experience sea-sickness, that could be a real challenge: take measures in advance, since the Pacific in never calm enough, despite its name.

Hawaii Oceanic boat Pueo Kai 2 provides manta ray night snorkel tours, dolphin tours, and Kealakekua Bay tours

Come join our Ohana (family) on the Pueo Kai 2, our Coast Guard certified 27 foot Force Marine powerboat with a full cabin and some shade. This charter boat was designed for Hawaiian waters and was built in Hawaii.

Experience amazing coral reefs in calm Kona waters — see Humpback Whales — or, for an incredible nighttime adventure, come snorkel with Manta Rays.

Manta Ray Night Snorkel - Manta Magic

Come aboard the Pueo Kai 2, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with up to 12 passengers. Snorkeling with Kona’s famous manta rays is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that The Travel Channel called “one of the top 10 things to do in your lifetime.”

After a quick 5-minute boat ride, we’ll arrive at the aptly named “Manta Village.”

You’ll enter the water as Kona’s famous manta rays feed on plankton accumulating under our light boards. The manta rays may fly by our light boards as they feast on plankton, and they may even hang around and do “barrel rolls” beneath us, as they come back for more and more plankton. Every night is different.

After 30-45 minutes in the water, depending on sea conditions and manta ray feeding behavior, you will be guided back to the boat.

Captain Cook Snorkel Tour at Kealakekua Bay

We cruise from Keauhou harbor out into crystal clear blue waters. While the boat is underway, the crew will point out interesting features along the Kona coastline, which is rich in Hawaiian history. South Kona has a bevy of historically significant Hawaiian Heritage sites, full of mana (spiritual power). Staying close to the Kona coast as we travel south towards Kealakekua Bay, we watch closely for any interesting marine life.

We may stop the boat to view the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) putting on a show. Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins rest close to shore during the day and will sometimes interact with the boat, bow-riding and playing in our wake.

After a brief show from the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Humpback whales, and whatever else of interest is found along our way, we arrive at the world-famous Kealakekua Bay, the site of the Captain James Cook monument.

Overall rating

This cruise was so much fun. The crew was really friendly and there were about 3-4 crew in the water with us which made novice snorkelers more comfortable. Overall, loved this cruise. Tips: -This boat departs from Ke ... walo Basin Harbor. The parking lot was crowded so Uber/Lyft or taxi is best. -Bring sunscreen, towel, change of clothes for after After we finished the snorkel sail, we headed over to Kakaako to grab lunch!

Everything was well organized and staff was professional. The beat part of this trip is that this is one of the first boats out to turtle canyon before the circus arrives. Get in early and get out while there are few peo ... ple in the water.

Amazing Crew!

- Crew was super friendly and helpful. Family-owned. - Drinks and snacks were provided during the tour - Best part: spotted a whale close to our boat on our way to Turtle Canyon; seen turtles and lots of fish during th ... e snorkeling session - The current was a little strong in the afternoon but still worth the trip - Overall super fun experience - Definitely recommend!

About Cenotes

About mexican taco lunch, about snorkel at the reef (3-in-1), about snorkeling, about tulum, general tour questions, reservations, what exactly are cenotes, and why are they so special in the riviera maya.

Cenotes are natural wonders found in the Yucatan Peninsula, essentially limestone caves filled with crystal-clear water. What makes them truly remarkable is their unique geological formation and the lush environment that surrounds them. In the Riviera Maya, snorkeling inside cenotes is a highly sought-after aquatic activity due to the unparalleled experience they offer.

Are there any safety precautions to take when visiting a cenote?

When visiting a cenote, it is important to follow the safety instructions provided by your tour guide or the cenote's staff. This include wearing a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer, using provided safety equipment such as flashlights and watershoes, and not touching or disturbing any of the natural features or wildlife in the cenote.

Which cenotes will we have the opportunity to explore on this tour?

Our exclusive cenotes, nestled in the heart of the Riviera Maya, are known as Ix Balam and Yum Balam. When we first discovered these cenotes, we were captivated by the presence of both large and small jaguar footprints in the area. This remarkable sighting inspired us to name this pristine cenote region after this magnificent jaguar family.

What is the average water temperature in the cenotes?

The average water temperature of cenotes varies depending on the location and time of year. Most of the time, the water in cenotes is typically cool and refreshing, with temperatures ranging from around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius). In some cases, the water may be warmer or colder, depending on factors such as the depth of the cenote and the surrounding air temperature.

Are the tortillas used for the tacos homemade?

Yes, indeed! Our tortillas are homemade, crafted with care and skill right here at our establishment. In fact, we invite you to witness the tortilla-making process firsthand, adding a unique and interactive element to your dining experience. Enjoy the aroma of freshly made tortillas as they're prepared to perfection, ensuring that each taco is served with the utmost freshness and authenticity.

Can the level of spiciness in the tacos be adjusted?

Absolutely! We understand that everyone has different preferences when it comes to spice levels. That's why we offer a range of salsas, from mild to hot, allowing you to customize the heat level of your tacos according to your taste. Simply add more or less hot salsa to your taco to suit your palate. We're here to ensure you enjoy every bite just the way you like it.

What sides or accompaniments are served with the tacos?

Our tacos are typically served with traditional Mexican dishes such as rice, beans, and a variety of salsas. These flavorful sides complement the tacos perfectly, enhancing your experience with authentic flavors and textures.

Do you offer vegetarian options on your taco menu?

Yes, we always provide vegetarian options on our taco menu. However, we recommend informing us of any dietary restrictions or preferences at the time of booking.

What types of tacos are typically available on your menu?

Our taco menu offers a diverse selection that may vary from day to day. Among our staple offerings are chicken tacos, such as the flavorful "tinga de pollo". Additionally, you can expect options like "cochinita pibil", tacos featuring nopal (cactus), ground beef, and more. With such a variety, there's always something to satisfy every taco craving!

What can I expect to see while snorkeling at the Tulum Reef?

While snorkeling at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, you can expect to see a wide variety of colorful and fascinating marine life. The reef is home to over 500 species of fish.  Some of the most seen species include parrotfish, angelfish, and pufferfish, as well as a variety of colorful corals and sponges. If you are lucky, you might spot rays and turtles too. Nevertheless, if you want to be sure to swim with green sea turtles, book one of our tours to Akumal, where turtle encounters are guaranteed. Snorkeling at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is a truly magical experience and is a must-do for anyone visiting the region

Is it necessary to wear a life vest during the snorkeling?

The use of a life vest, provided by us free of charge, is mandatory during any snorkel activity.

What’s the Mesoamerican barrier reef?

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is a coral reef system located off the coast of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. It is the second-largest coral reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and is home to a diverse array of marine life. The reef stretches for more than 1,000 miles along the eastern coast of Central America, and is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is also an important economic resource for the region, providing livelihoods for local communities through tourism and fishing.

Are life vests available?

Yes, the life vest is part of the snorkeling equipment included and is mandatory.

What is the sea water temperature?

The swimming season in Cancun lasts from January to December, twelve months per year!

Cancun water temperatures are always bathtub warm, varying from 75°F/ 23°C, 82°F / 28°C  in the winter months to 85°F /29°C in the summer months. Underwater visibility can reach up to an amazing 200 feet.

What if it’s raining?

Weather conditions can change. Rain can quickly come and go throughout the day. Always be prepared for rain! We monitor the weather conditions closely. We still go if it is raining, in fact this can add to the experience in many cases. Our guides are trained to make you the most comfortable.

Which rays can I see and are they dangerous?

We have 4 types of rays in the Caribbean Sea: stingrays, eagle rays, mobula rays and manta rays. The most seen is the stingray, followed by the eagle ray.

Rays in the Caribbean aren’t dangerous and only attack in self-defense, injecting a very painful, but not deadly, venom. So far, there are no known cases of humans being attacked by rays in this region.

Can I wear glasses during the snorkeling?

You cannot wear prescription glasses under goggles or masks. You can use contact lenses; we offer snorkel masks with pulge valves which makes you able to eliminate water without having to remove your mask. We also offer prescription masks with no extra cost (available from-1 to -6). Please make reservations for this service at your booking or at least 24 hours before the service starts.

Do i need previous experience to snorkel?

No, you don’t need any previous experience to snorkel, but it is important that you can swim independently and that you are comfortable in the water. If you don’t feel safe enough, you can also use our safety buoy to float, our guides take them on all our snorkeling excursions.

What is snorkeling?

Snorkeling is swimming with fins, a mask, and a tube called a snorkel that allows you to have your face down in the water and still breathe.

What to wear to Tulum ruins?

There is not any protection from sun or rain while walking around. It is usually hot walking around, so comfortable clothes, shoes, sunscreen, hat, glasses, and water are all good things to keep in mind. We offer, free of charge, umbrellas to protect you from the sun and rain in case of.

How long does it take to see Tulum ruins?

The Tulum ruins are not that big. We take you on a 45-minute guided excursion to go through the Tulum ruins. After that you can use 15-20 minutes to go your own and take your pictures.

What happened to the Mayans in Tulum?

Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico.  By the end of the 16th century, the site was abandoned . Tulum was abandoned as European diseases and epidemics decimated the population . Archaeologists have evidence that the population was killed off by the Spaniards when they introduced Old World diseases into the area as a way to destroy the native population.

How did Tulum get its name?

The original name of Tulum was Zamá, which in the ancient Mayan language means "dawn”. Tulum was an important walled city that in ancient times was used as a port for an extensive commercial network since the terrestrial and maritime routes of the ancient Mayan people converged here.

We also have international staff, and we can offer our excursions on specific days with other languages like German, French, Italian Dutch, Polish, and Russian. If you want another language guide, please contact our customer service.  Spanish and English language is always available.

Can I skip the transportation and take my own car?

Although we recommend our hassle-free transportation from your hotel or Airbnb you can take your car and leave the car at a meeting point. In between the activities, we will take you with our transportation and after the excursion, we bring you back to the car. Please take note that parking fees are not included. Please contact our customer service if you want to bring your own car.

How many people can sign up for an excursion?

In our excursions, we create small groups so that you can enjoy the freedom of movement and be able to interact closely with your surroundings, as well as so that you can receive more personalized attention from our guides. This small size ensures that your group will not encroach on your personal experience. Most of our transportations fits 12 persons but some of our excursions involve boat trips, which may have specific capacity limitations.

May I tip the driver and guide? Is it obligatory?

Although not obligatory, it's standard practice in Mexico, and for many of our visitors is a form of thanks on finishing the excursion, always when the service and attention of these professionals have been as expected or has surpassed your expectations.

But we repeat, this is NOT OBLIGATORY.

Can people with disabilities participate in the excursion?

Our existing itineraries are not specifically designed for travelers with disabilities, but that doesn’t mean you will not be able to enjoy one of our small group excursions – it’s largely dependent on your specific needs and the location you wish to visit.

Some destinations are better suited for travelers with disabilities than others. Many destinations we visit lack accessible public infrastructure or facilities designed to accommodate travelers with disabilities, but we will do our best to arrange suitable alternatives where possible.

You may also prefer to speak to our Customer Service and arrange a customized itinerary to suit your needs.

Do you offer photos from the snorkeling excursion?

Of course! On most of our tours, professional photographer will do their best to make your day with Ocean Excursions as memorable as possible. They carry top-quality (underwater) cameras and take high-resolution photos of both participants and their surroundings. You can view the pictures after your excursion and decide if you want to purchase them. The images are sold as a package, where you receive access to all the photos taken by your guide and our "Best Ocean Tours Excursions" collection folder, all of which will be made available to you via a link . The price for the photo package depends on the group size of your booking. For 2 persons the package is $66 USD and for 6 persons the package is $106 USD. Private Tours have different pricing depending on your group size  and tour.

Can I take my (underwater) camera to the excursion?

You are free to take your own photos or video on tour with us, but we ask, while snorkeling, that your equipment is attached to your body in one way or another, for example with a wrist band. We do however not advise that you take your phone in a waterproof case, because it is generally not possible to operate it whilst doing the activities. At all archeological sites non-professional cameras are permitted at no cost. Video cameras GoPro tablets and selfie sticks have a charge which is paid directly at the box office upon entry. The use of professional photography equipment is strictly prohibited - including tripods.

We do not take any responsibility of lost or damage photography gear that may happen on tour with us.

Can I pay for a reservation in someone else’s name?

Yes. For your protection and security, we will request a copy of your identification and a copy of the credit card with which you made the payment. You can send this by email to [email protected] or we will ask for it when you board our tour.

I think I made the payment, but I do not receive your confirmation. What should I do?

Usually, if confirmation does not arrive, first: Look first in your UNWANTED email folder (SPAM), if you do not find our confirmation in that folder, you probably have misplaced/misspelled your email. In this case, contact us and we will help you solve it.

What if the trip I have my heart set on is sold out?

Sometimes, it happens that our tours are sold out. Especially during high seasons and holidays. Just because a tour is sold out doesn’t mean you are out of options for taking the trip of your dreams. If we can make it happen, we will. Please call our Customer Service at +52 984 206 1444. They will try to accommodate your request or let you know about newly added departure dates that might work with your schedule.

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans change. That’s why, when you book with us, you have the flexibility to change your travels and re-book when it suits you. Change or cancel your travel plans up to 24 hours before departure, with no fees.  Cancellation requests made within 24 hours of the departure date/time may not receive a refund.

Why should I book now?

We advise you to book our tours now as we have many requests! The number of participants in each excursion is limited. Discounts will only be available for early bookings.

Can I take a tour with a larger group than the website allows me to book at once?

All of our tours have their own limits when it comes to the number of people they can accommodate. If your group is larger than the allowed number on our website for a specific tour, please contact our customer service team to find a suitable option for your group. They will be able to help you arrange the perfect trip for your group, regardless of size.

Can I make a telephone reservation?

You can always phone us on any of the numbers given on our website to make a reservation; however, to guarantee your seats, you should pay 20% of the total cost of the reservation.

How can I pay?

We have various payment options:

You can pay for the service completely by Credit or debit card or

PayPal (This is very simple and only takes a minute).

You can also pay us only a 20% deposit to confirm your reservation. The balance due can be paid directly to our guide in cash (USD, MXN, EURO) or with a credit card.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Our vessel, the iconic 60-foot Salty Lady, departs from San Francisco Yacht Harbor at 8:30am. On every trip we provide a whale expert, a seabird expert, and a professional photographer who shares photos with you for free! No matter what animals we see, our experts will tell you all about them and they will be photographed and recorded in digital databases to support research and conservation. To start the trip, we cruise under the Golden Gate Bridge, often seeing harbor porpoises along the way, and travel up the coastline of the Marin Headlands. We then check in at Diablo Cove to see hauled-out harbor seals and occasional Black Oystercatchers on the rocks. From there, we head past Point Bonita Lighthouse and begin our 27-mile journey to the Farallon Islands, humpback whale watching and birding all along the way. A little over 2 hours later, we pull into the calm waters of Fisherman’s Bay at Southeast Farallon Island. There, we soak in the incredible marine habitat which supports over 300,000 breeding seabirds, over 5,000 seals and sea lions and over 100 great white sharks in the fall months (disclaimer: it is very rare to see sharks on our trips, but they are there!). There are also several resident gray whales to see at the Farallon Islands, one of the only places in the world to see them outside of Alaskan waters during the summer months. Next, we continue over to the south side of the Farallones where the biologists who study and preserve the islands live. (Please note: at no point during the trip do we set foot on the islands, they are off-limits to the public.) Nearby, there is a huge colony of northern fur seals, which is growing year after year despite being hunted to local extinction in the late 1800s. Weather permitting, we then go beyond the islands to the Farallon Escarpment, where the ocean floor drops off from roughly 300 to 3,000 feet very quickly. This area is where we can find rarely-seen deep-water seabirds (including albatross), a large variety of dolphins and porpoises, and enormous, magnificent blue whales. From there we begin making our way back to San Francisco Bay seeking out more whale encounters along the way. We often have beautiful sunny conditions and great photographic opportunities coming back under the Golden Gate Bridge. We arrive back in San Francisco right around 4:00pm and our wildlife experts will give a summary of what we saw and our photographer will have a link to images from the day ready for you to view or share as you wish.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Tour boat spots massive sea creature tangled in ropes — then comes complicated rescue

Off the southwestern coast of the United Kingdom, a massive sea creature struggled with ropes wrapped around its body. Help finally arrived in the form of an orange lifeboat and a pole.

Boaters spotted a humpback whale tangled in some fishing ropes when they were coming back from a wildlife-watching tour in Mount’s Bay on March 31, the tour company, Marine Discovery Penzance, wrote in a Facebook post.

“The poor whale was wound into the ropes, with two drawn tightly across its back and another wrapped round its tail stock, which had caused a nasty wound,” the company wrote.

After taking its passengers back to shore, the tour boat and several other boaters returned to try to help the whale.

Grampus Campus, a Cornwall wildlife group, shared photos of the struggling whale on Facebook. Several ropes are visible across the whale’s gray back.

The choppy seas made a rescue operation too dangerous for the group of boaters and complicated even for trained professionals, the tour company said. The only option was to wait and monitor the whale.

The hours dragged on and the group became concerned “that the whale could be in (a) collision ” with a shipping boat overnight, Atlantic Adventures wrote in a Facebook post.

Finally, a trained rescue team arrived from across the bay.

A wildlife photographer visiting Cornwall for the weekend filmed the rescue and shared the video on Facebook. (Warning: Video contains language that some viewers might find offensive.)

The video shows the orange lifeboat approach the whale. Someone onboard leans over the side with a pole-shaped tool. A moment later, the whale splashes the boat and moves away.

The rescuers had managed to cut away the ropes and free the humpback whale.

“It’s incredible what the guy at (the) helm achieved because it was properly rough,” Hannah Wilson with Marine Discovery Penzance told Sky News , a U.K. news outlet.

The lifeboat followed the whale for a short time to make sure it was fully freed, the tour company said.

The humpback whale was later identified as Ivy, who “has been in the area for a while,” Penlee Lifeboat wrote in a Facebook post.

“This is one of those proud moments, when every one comes together for the greater good,” Grampus Campus said.

“This whale was lucky but there will be plenty that won’t be,” Wilson told McClatchy News, expressing concern about how environmental conditions are influencing whale migration and increasing their risk of harm.

Mount’s Bay is off the southwestern coast of Cornwall and about 300 miles west of London.
