This is a featured article. Click here for more information.

The College of Winterhold is a guild of mages centered in Skyrim . It is a faction of magic -users similar to the Mages Guild of Cyrodiil and Morrowind . When the Dragonborn appears, the current Arch-Mage is Savos Aren , with Mirabelle Ervine serving as the Master Wizard . During the faction's main quest, Tolfdir replaces her as Master Wizard. The College is located in the northern section of the city of Winterhold , in northern Skyrim. Instructors of each magical discipline reside within, offering training and various magical wares to members.

Upon visiting the College, it can be joined by passing a test of merit which requires the casting of a spell . The College must be joined during " Elder Knowledge " in order to progress the main quest . However, this can be avoided if the Dragonborn travels directly to Septimus Signus' Outpost to pick up the next part of the quest there.

Before entering the College, the gatekeeper, Faralda , will wish to see a demonstration of the Dragonborn's magical powers. She requests to see a spell appropriate for the Dragonborn's level before gaining passage. These spells include:

  • Healing Hands
  • Conjure Flame Atronach
  • Conjure Familiar

Gold

A high-level persuasion check bypasses this test. Additionally, revealing one's identity as the Dragonborn causes Faralda to ask for a demonstration of the Thu'um . Successfully using it bypasses the spell-casting test. This option can only be used during the quest " Elder Knowledge ."

Rules and expulsion

Killing a student causes other College members to refuse to speak with the killer, starting the quest " Rejoining the College ." Stealing items from college members is also considered a crime if caught.

Architectural design

Collegemapkey 03

A map of the College of Winterhold. Notable locations are indicated with numbers.

The College of Winterhold is located just north of Winterhold, on a large cliff. A narrow bridge in a state of disrepair connects the city to the College.

The central courtyard is dominated by a statue of the first Arch-Mage of the College, Shalidor , who is also the supposed founder of the city; this is the hub of the facility, offering access back out to the bridge and into the three Halls. The exterior windows offer exceptional views of the coastline.

The courtyard branches off to the three halls of the College. The Hall of Attainment , the living quarters for mage apprentices, is off to the left upon entering the College, while the Hall of Countenance , the living quarters for more advanced mages, is off to the right. Straight ahead lies the Hall of the Elements , the lecture hall of the College.

From the Hall of the Elements, the Arch-Mage's Quarters branches off on the left while The Arcanaeum , the College's library, branches off on the right.

The Midden , a prison or storage area beneath the College, houses the Atronach Forge , the Augur of Dunlain , and a Daedric Relic encountered in the quest " Forgotten Names ." Ice Wraiths , Draugr , and Frostbite Spiders inhabit the halls of The Midden. A tunnel here leads to the Skyrim overworld just outside of the College.

TESV Banner Winterhold

The banner of The College of Winterhold.

Winterhold was once a great, powerful and wealthy hold, [1] [2] and its relationship with the College of Winterhold was good. [3]

In 4E 122 , an unprecedented, cataclysmic event struck Winterhold and most of the areas along the coastline. A massive storm came in from the Sea of Ghosts , which brought huge waves which crashed into Winterhold. Most of the city fell into the sea, leaving the city in ruins both physically in terms of the destruction of the city itself, and the emotional and psychological damage to Winterhold's people. This event would eventually be referred to as "The Great Collapse." The disaster left Winterhold in ruins, and some had said that things would never be the same again, including Winterhold's relationship with the College. The people of Winterhold would eventually begin to blame the College for causing the Great Collapse. [4] Winterhold has yet to recover from the Great Collapse. [5] [6] [7]

Historical documents

Papers kept in the College's library reportedly date back to the late Second Era. [6] Serana in the Dawnguard add-on corroborates this date, recalling that the College existed when she was entombed between the Second and Third empires. [8] [UL 1] However, Mirabelle Ervine states in her tour of the grounds that the College has been a "fixture" of Skyrim for thousands of years. [9]

Written evidence of the College's existence is found in the Pocket Guide to the Empire, Third Edition: Skyrim from 3E 433 , which describes the growth of the city of Winterhold after the College obtained a group of documents known as the Ysmir Collective , [2] and the Atlas of Dragons from 2E 373 , which documents dragons slain throughout history. [10]

Relation to the Mages Guild

As the College was independent from the Mages Guild, Necromancy was never made illegal by the College, unlike the Mages Guild in Cyrodiil. For the College of Winterhold, the practice was generally regarded as a tool, not a weapon, although practicing it outside of the College was, and is, not advised. [11] Like Cyrodiil, there were still wandering groups of Necromancers that did not function alongside the College. Since the College was independent of the jurisdiction of the Mages Guild, it was unaffected by the Necromancy Ban of 3E 431 and the subsequent eradication of that ban which led to battles against Mannimarco .

CollegeStonecarving

The seal of the College of Winterhold.

The College is often blamed for the Great Collapse of 4E 122 and is therefore widely distrusted. It is often believed that it was activities at the College that caused the disaster; the only evidence supporting this is that only the College remained almost untouched. The College has since been cautious as to avoid provoking the population of Skyrim. [12] [13] Many nationalistic Nords also do not trust the College because of the fact that the immigrant Dunmer make up the majority of the members within the faction. Additionally, most Nords view magic and its practitioners as spineless and weak. [14] [15]

The only positive relationship the people of Skyrim have with the College of Winterhold are requests for various items to be enchanted for them. Sergius Turrianus explains that enchanting services are one of the few connections between the College and the people of Skyrim. [16] Occasionally, he will have his students travel to a specific location in Skyrim to pick up an item from a person who made a request to the College to have the item enchanted. [17]

Lectures are held in the Hall of the Elements during the day. These cover a wide range of subjects and the Dragonborn is welcome to listen, provided they have joined the College.

Achievements

  • As with most other places in Skyrim , the College is a possible spawning place for dragons―sometimes several dragons. The most commonly encountered dragon around level 20 and higher is the Blood Dragon and will usually respawn.
  • When seen from above, the College's structure greatly resembles the Magical diagrams found in Shalidor's Insights .
  • Just beneath the floor of the College quarters, there are four chests containing various high-leveled robes , tomes , soul gems , quest items , and other mage-oriented gear organized by magic school . They can be accessed on the PC version by typing tcl into the console to toggle no-clipping mode and enable walking through solid surfaces. On the console versions, these chests are randomly accessible due to bugs in the game's texture loading system. There might occasionally be a missing floor tile in the Hall of the Elements, revealing one of the chests. It is then reachable by crouching close to the chest without touching the broken floor. All objects taken from these chests are considered stolen .
  • Even after joining the College, Farengar Secret-Fire in Dragonsreach still says, "You know, if you have the aptitude, you should join the mages' college in Winterhold."
  • In the Hall of Elements, the teachers and librarian will hold speeches about their particular subject. Once their speeches are completed, everyone returns to their daily positions.
  • After completing " Arniel's Endeavor " it is possible to see Arniel's Shade wandering around the College and even sleeping in his room.
  • By some people at the College, it was said the College of Winterhold was the most famous mages guild before the Great Collapse. Some say that people from all over Tamriel would visit Skyrim just to join the College.
  • During the introduction, when Faralda lights the stone well, followers may get in the way and get hit by her spell.
  • It is possible to enter the College of Winterhold without becoming an apprentice. One can enter by standing on the edge of the bridge and using the "Whirlwind Sprint" shout to fly through the side of the building. However, all three words of the shout must be learned, as the length between the bridge and the opening is too far for only the first or first two words. It is also possible to return to the bridge using the same method.
  • One cannot ask for training in any school of magic.
  • It is impossible to ask for side quests. Arniel Gane has the dialogue option, but he will decline.
  • The gate to the bridge is key-locked, meaning it cannot be picked open.
  • Mirabelle Ervine and Ancano 's conversation does not play out.
  • The Midden is the only internal area to feature music.
  • The Hall of the Elements is the only area that cannot be waited in.
  • The College of Winterhold can be seen from as far away as Solitude . One can get this view from the amphitheater at the Bards College .
  • The persuasion speech check for Faralda to admit the Dragonborn without casting a spell is the highest speech check in the game.

The College of Winterhold Side Missions:

Tolfdir's alembic :.

This task is given by Tolfdir and can be pursued after joining the College of Winterhold ; and, since Tolfdir is forgetful, it is repeatable. He has misplaced his alembic and asks you to find it for him since it has sentimental value. Search the Hall of Countenance to find it and return it to Tolfdir for a small gold reward and a random gem.

Aftershock :

This task is given by Tolfdir and becomes available after completion of The Eye of Magnus . Ancano's interactions with the Eye of Magnus has opened random rifts in Skyrim , allowing magical anomalies to enter. Journey to the site and use the Staff of Magnus to close the rift and then destroy the three anomalies. Return to Tolfdir who will pay a substantial amount of gold for your help. This is a repeatable task.

Rogue Wizard :

This task is given by Tolfdir and becomes available after completion of The Eye of Magnus . He will send you to a random location to slay a rogue wizard. Kill the mage and your reward is a thank you and whatever loot you got during the task.

Out Of Balance :

This task is offered by Drevis Neloren after you join the College of Winterhold . Neloren will give you a pair of Mystic Tuning Gloves which you must use to purify the mystic focal points around the College . This is a repeatable task but yields only a thank you.

Enchanting :

Sergius Turrianus will offer this task after you join the College . It is a repeatable task and simply involves travelling to a random location. picking up an item that requires enchanting and bringing it to Sergius . You will receive a small gold stipend for your effort.

Restocking Soul Gems :

Sergius Turrianus will say he is low on Soul Gems and wants you to bring him a random number of a random type of Soul Gems . This can be offered after you join the College and is a repeatable task. If you find and return the Soul Gems to the mage he will reward your efforts with gold valued above that of the Soul Gems .

Book Procurement :

After you join the College of Winterhold , Urag gro-Shub in the Arcanaeum will ask you to find a book at a random location and return it to the College . Find and return it to Urag for a small gold stipend. This is a repeatable task.

Shalidor's Insights :

This repeatable task will be offered by Urag gro-Shub in the Arcanaeum after you join the College . Shalidor wrote volumes that are lost in the wilds if S kyrim and he wants you to return them to him for translation. These will be in random locations where you'll need to battle the hostiles to obtain the book. Return it to the College of Winterhold to receive various Scrolls that will enhance an ability for a short period of time.

Arniel's Endeavors :

After completion of the mission, Hitting the Books , Arniel Gane will have a task. He will be evasive about a project for which he needs ten Dwemer Cogs. He will only say that he wants to research how they were made. Accept the task, which is the first of a four-part quest. The needed cogs can be gathered in the ancient Dwemer ruins that are located about Skyrim . Be aware that a cog weighs ten units-so have free inventory space when you search for them.

The College of Winterhold quest line will take you to the Dwemer ruins at Mzulft where you can easily obtain the ten cogs during the mission, Revealing the Unseen . Four cogs can be found in the small Dwarven storeroom on the southern outskirts of Mzulft . However, you can obtain the cogs from any of the Dwemer sites. When you have the ten cogs, take them to Arniel Gane so he can proceed with his research.

The next task is to convince Enthir to trade "something" that is in his possession and which Gane believed they had a deal for. Enthir , on the other hand, says that the item belongs to him and tha t Gane apparently isn't willing to meet his price.. Enthir can be persuaded to relinquish it; but, in all likelihood, you'll need to obtain the Staff of Tandil from a hostile location. He has a buyer for the staff and if you retrieve it, he will exchange the staff for Gane's item. Journey to the random location, battle the locals and return to Enthir with the Staff of Tandil . He will trade it for the Warped Soul Gem that Arniel Gane wants so badly. He says the Gem is so warped that it can't hold a soul. He can't imagine why it has such high value for Gane . Take the Warped Soul Gem to Gane.

Go about your business and when you return to Gane , he will lament that his efforts didn't achieve the results he wanted. He has only managed to further damage the Soul Gem. He finally reveals that the experiment was an attempt to replicate a process that caused the Dwemer to disappear. He says that his skill falls far short of the ancients and that the Warped Soul Gem needs to be heated in Dwemer Convectors to properly repair it. He will ask you to journey to three of the Convectors and he will give you a spell called Arniel's Convection to heat the Gem for three seconds at three Convectors. Be aware that Arniel's Convection will be available in Destruction .

Markers indicating the locations of the Convectors will display on your map. Journey to any of the sites-note that selecting the Convector at the remote site at Deep Folk Crossing , making it a fast-travel station, can be quite helpful while pursuing the mission, Lost to the Ages . Place the Warped Soul Gem in the Convector and then equip and use the spell to heat it. Retrieve the Gem and repeat the process at two additional Convectors . When the process is completed, return to Arniel Gane with the repaired Gem .

Gane will continue with his experiments, so return after a few days to check on his progress. Gane is again at odds with Enthir over a package that he was supposed to deliver, but didn't. Find Enthir and he will say that the package simply never arrived from Morrowind . Gane arranged the buy- Enthir simply made delivery arrangements and the package just didn't arrive. He will suggest that you locate the courier.

A marker will indicate the suspected location of the courier on your map. Journey to the location-a hostile one for sure-and battle your way to the courier who has been killed. The needed package , however, is still there.

Return it to Gane . The package contains a dagger called Keening , which, he says, is an artifact of great power. He will perform his experiment and, after a few failures, he will promptly disappear in a blast of energy. Keening remains, so take it from the floor. The dagger absorbs ten points of Health, Magicka and Stamina . You'll also receive the Spell Tome: Summon Arniel's Shade , for your efforts.

Brelyna's Practice :

Brelyna's is an apprentice mage and her task is available after completion of Under Saarthal . She will ask you to be a subject of a spell she is practicing. Agree and she will first turn you green. When that effect wears off, she will turn you into a string of animals. After her failures and your return to normal, she will go back to the drawing board and award you with an enchanted necklace for your help.

J'zargo's Experiment :

J'zargo is an apprentice mage who practices Destruction . His task will be available after completion of Under Saarthal . The Argonian is working on a Flame Cloak and he wants you to test its power on the undead. Agree to help and when you next encounter Draugr , use it to kill three undead. Return to J'zargo who will then be available as a companion.

Onmund's Request :

Onmund is an apprentice mage whose task will become available after completion of Under Saarthal . Onmund traded an amulet to Enthir but regrets the transaction. He asks you to approach Enthir and persuade him to trade it back. Find Enthir who isn't interested in trading. He can be persuaded to do so but it is far more likely that he will only trade if you can return a staff that he traded to someone that he regrets having bartered with. Agree and journey to the random site and, in all likelihood, battle the locals to obtain the Staff of Charming . Return to Enthir who will trade the amulet for it. Return the amulet to Onmund who will then offer his services as a companion.

Nirya is a High Elf sorceress and a scholar at the College of Winterhold . She does not offer any training to you nor does she offer any kind of merchant services. She is not on good terms with Faralda .

Nirya will spend the morning and evening in the Hall of Attainment and much of her day in The Arcanaeum . She wears expert robes of Destruction and a pair of boots .

Sergius Turrianus is also a reason for the rivalry between Nirya and Faralda, as they are both marked as his secret lovers. She visits Sergius at 11 pm for 3 hours, before heading off to bed.

Dialogue [ edit ]

Nirya may greet you with, "It's a small group of us here at the College. Favors don't go unremembered. Neither do affronts." , "If you're working on any experiments, please clean up after yourself." , "Just like anywhere else, it's all about who you know. Lucky for you, you know me." , or "I think the College is due for a change in leadership."

Should you become Arch-Mage , however, her tone will change as she will quite obviously try to win your favor by saying things like, "May I just say, it's a pleasure to have you leading the College. Really." , "I'm sure you've made note of who's been the most helpful during your time here, Arch-Mage." , "If there's ever any way I can assist you, please let me know." , and "Ancano is exactly why we're so restrictive about access to the College. We'd all have perished if it weren't for you."

When first spoken to, Nirya will vaguely comment, "It's lies. All of it. I don't care what she told you, it's all lies." If you ask who she is taking about, she will answer, "Faralda. Don't act like she didn't say anything. I know her, I know what she's been up to." If you instead say you have no idea what she's talking about, she will warn you, "No? Well, then she hasn't gotten to you yet. But she will. And you don't you believe a word of it."

You may ask her about her problem with Faralda, which Nirya will vehemently deny: "My problem with her? She's the one who has a problem with me! She's threatened by me! By my skill as a wizard, by my elegance and posture, by my superior good looks! But she's not going to get the better of me, oh no. I won't let it get to me one bit. That's what she's after."

Quest-Related Events [ edit ]

Like most members of the College, Nirya will express suspicion of Ancano , Arch-Mage Aren 's advisor: "Don't trust that one. He's up to something. Most here are up to something, of course, but in his case, it's not good. I haven't figured it out yet, but I will." along with an admiring comment: "He is rather handsome though, isn't he?"

Asking if she has ever heard of the Augur of Dunlain will yield an unhelpful response from her: "It's not enough that you've stolen the spotlight with this Eye thing, now you're looking for the Augur? I'm not sure what you're playing at, but you'd do well to remember your place around here."

As you complete more quests for the College, Ancano will eventually unleash disaster on Winterhold when he takes control of the Eye of Magnus, proving Nirya's suspicions. During this, she will ask you, "What's going on?!" When you set out to retrieve the Staff of Magnus , she will remark, "We never should have pulled that thing out of Saarthal." During The Eye of Magnus , she can be found saying, "Why doesn't someone do something?"

The Black Star [ edit ]

During The Black Star , asking if there is an elven mage in the College that studies stars will make her suspicious: "Did you say an 'elf' and 'stars'? I hope you don't know what you're asking." Further inquiring about what happened will have her explain, "There was an... unfortunate incident a few years ago. An elven mage named Nelacar was exiled from the College over it." and interestingly comment, "He's still in town, getting by plying spells to the people inside the Frozen Hearth . Disgraceful." If you instead state that you were given a vision, she will reply with, "You were given a vision? Are you serious? Whatever. The person you probably want is Nelacar. He's in the Frozen Hearth. Be careful, he was exiled from the College for a reason."

Spells [ edit ]

Nirya knows the following spells:

Conversations [ edit ]

Notes [ edit ].

  • Nirya was originally going to give you a quest where she requested some of Faralda's Notes to be "retrieved" by you. You would then have the option to either expose the scheme to Faralda , or play along for a reward of 100 gold.
  • According to the unused quest stages of First Lessons , Nirya was supposed to be guarding the entrance to the College of Winterhold, and thus play a part in entering the College when you are required to cast a spell. She even has unused dialogue that indicates her part as the gatekeeper. This never happens in game, however, leading to a bug under certain circumstances as noted below .

As with all the other dwarven ruins in the province, you will have to battle your way through an immensely challenging set of enemies that will push your spellcraft to its limits The ruins are even capped off with a unique puzzle that will need you to make use of your magic to solve.

This quest starts after a conversation with Arch-Mage Savos. When relaying the Augur of Dunlain's instructions to find the Staff of Magnus , at the end of Good Intentions , he will tell you that Mirabelle Ervine had spoken to him about it recently and that she would know more.

She doesn't actually know where the Staff is, though she did note that a group of mages from Cyrodill representing the Synod, an Imperial organization similar to the College, had asked her for help. They mentioned going to the Ruins of Mzulft, giving you a lead.

The Ruins are in a remote area between Windhelm and Riften. As you enter, you will be stopped by a dying man called Gavros Pilnius. He asks you to make it to the Oculory, deep in the ruins before dying.

Loot him for the key to the Ruins and enter. Inside, you will encounter the usual selection of Dwarven Constructs such as Spiders and Spheres . They are joined with Chaurus as well.

Dwarven Constructs have 25 percent resistance to magic and immunity to Frost . Bringing a melee weapon would be wise .

You will eventually reach a door marked with dead Falmer. This is the entrance to the Mzulft Boilery . This area is another linear path that has you fighting more of the same enemies with Falmer joining the fight.

The Boilery is home to many steam-powered mechanisms that can push you or otherwise block your path .

At the end of the Boilery, you will reach the Aedrome, the final part of the dungeon. You will have to reach a central room containing many powerful Falmer. O ne of them has a Focusing Crystal that you need to loot.

Your progress will be blocked here. Take the east door , following it all the way to the end to find a Dwarven Centurion . You will need to defeat it to loot the key to the locked door . This will take you to the Oculory.

Your way will be blocked by a locked door. Gavros' colleague, Paratus Decimius is on the other side. After some quick questions, he unlocks the door to let you in , to his surprise.

After some disbelief and discussion, he leads you deeper into the Oculory and to a large dwarven contraption. You will need to insert the Focusing Crystal to proceed.

This puzzle consists of three focusing lenses and three rotating rings with another lens on each one. Your objective is to get one beam of light to each ring's lens .

You will need to use Fire and Frost Spells to move the focusing lenses. Exposure to each element will tilt the lens . With sufficient finesse, you will be able to get one on each ring .

There will be Spell Tome: Flames and Spell Tome: Frostbite close to the buttons if you need either spell.

Once they're separated, go to the buttons and get a beam of light to each lens . Each button controls a different ring . Simply pressing the button until it aligns will be sufficient. With that done, the mechanism will work . Paratus will identify that the Eye of Magnus is interfering with the mechanism . While he is not helpful, he gives you enough information to return to Arch-Mage Savos .

Your return, however, is cut short when you find that Ancano has taken matters into his own hands . This causes an accident that leads to the next quest, Containment .
