Understanding Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Cruise ship theme parties are special events or nights organized onboard a cruise ship that revolve around a specific theme. These parties are a fun and exciting way to enhance your cruise experience and add some flair to your journey. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, participating in theme parties can be a highlight of your cruise vacation.

Theme parties on cruise ships are important because they provide a unique and memorable experience for passengers. These parties create a festive atmosphere, allowing people to let loose, socialize, and have fun. They also help passengers connect with the onboard community by providing a shared interest or theme to bond over.

Common theme party activities include costume contests, live performances, dance-offs, themed food and drinks, and interactive games. These activities are designed to immerse passengers in the theme and create a vibrant and engaging environment for everyone onboard.

Popular Types of Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Formal theme parties.

Formal theme parties are a common occurrence on cruise ships. These parties often take place on elegant nights, where passengers are encouraged to dress up in formal attire. The theme could range from a classic black and white ball to a masquerade party. Formal theme parties provide an opportunity for passengers to showcase their style and elegance while enjoying a sophisticated evening of music and dancing.

Cultural Theme Parties

Cultural theme parties celebrate different cultures from around the world. Passengers can experience the vibrant traditions, music, and cuisine of various countries, immersing themselves in a multicultural atmosphere. Whether it’s a Caribbean Night or a Mexican Fiesta, cultural theme parties allow passengers to broaden their horizons and appreciate the diversity of the destinations they are visiting.

Decade or Era Based Parties

Decade or era based parties take passengers back in time to relive the excitement and fashion of a particular period. From the roaring 20s to the disco era of the 70s, these parties are a blast from the past. Passengers can get creative with their outfits and enjoy the nostalgia of a bygone era. Decade or era based parties are a hit among cruisers who love to dress up and transport themselves to a different time.

Colour or Costume Theme Parties

Colour or costume theme parties encourage passengers to dress up in specific colours or costumes related to the theme. Examples include White Out Night, Tropical Paradise Party, or Superhero Night. These parties allow passengers to showcase their creativity and have fun with their outfits. Costume theme parties often lead to lively conversations and interactions among fellow passengers who share a similar interest or favourite character.

Holiday Theme Parties

Holiday theme parties are especially popular during festive seasons such as Halloween, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve. Passengers can celebrate these holidays onboard the cruise ship, complete with decorations, themed music, and special menus. Holiday theme parties create a joyous atmosphere and bring people together to celebrate in a unique and memorable way.

Steps to Planning for Cruise Ship Theme Parties

To make the most of cruise ship theme parties, it’s important to plan ahead and be prepared. Here are some steps to help you get ready for the festivities.

Understanding Theme Party Schedule

Check the cruise ship’s daily newsletter or online portal to find out the schedule of theme parties during your voyage. Note down the dates, times, and themes of each party. This will help you plan your outfits and activities accordingly.

Planning Your Outfits

Once you know the themes of the parties, start brainstorming ideas for your outfits. Research online for inspiration and get creative with your costume choices. Make sure to pack all the necessary items, including accessories and props, to fully immerse yourself in the theme.

Participating in Activities

Take part in the activities and games organized during the theme parties. Whether it’s a dance-off, trivia quiz, or a talent show, these activities are designed to engage passengers and add to the overall fun and entertainment. Don’t be shy and join in the excitement – you might even win a prize or make new friends along the way.

How to Choose A Suitable Outfit for A Theme Party

Choosing the right outfit for a cruise ship theme party is crucial to fully enjoy and participate in the festivities. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect attire for any theme party.

Adhering to Theme and Dress Code

Make sure your outfit aligns with the theme of the party. For example, if it’s a Hawaiian Luau party, opt for a floral shirt or a grass skirt. Also, check if there are any specific dress code requirements for the party. Some parties may have formal or semi-formal dress codes, while others may require more casual or costume-like attire.

Comfortable and Appropriate Clothing

While it’s important to dress according to the theme, always prioritize comfort and appropriateness. Consider the weather, the type of activities involved, and the comfort level of your outfit. You don’t want to be in an uncomfortable costume all night or risk being underdressed in inappropriate clothing.

Accessorizing for a Theme Party

Accessories can take your theme party outfit to the next level. Choose accessories that complement your costume and enhance the overall look. Wigs, hats, jewelry, and props can add that extra touch of authenticity and fun to your ensemble. However, make sure your accessories are safe and won’t obstruct movement or cause any inconvenience during the party.

Maximizing Fun at Cruise Ship Theme Parties

To fully enjoy cruise ship theme parties, it’s important to immerse yourself in the party spirit and engage with fellow cruisers. Here are some tips to help you make the most of these festivities.

Getting In the Party Spirit

Before attending a theme party, get yourself in the party mood. Listen to music related to the theme, watch movies or shows that align with the party theme, or even read books or articles to familiarize yourself with the party’s cultural or historical references. This will help you feel more connected to the theme and enhance your overall experience.

Engaging with Fellow Cruisers

Cruise ship theme parties provide an excellent opportunity to socialize and meet new people. Strike up conversations with fellow cruisers who are also enthusiastic about the theme. Compliment their outfits, share your excitement about the party, and exchange stories or experiences related to the theme. Engaging with others will not only make the party more enjoyable but also create lasting memories and friendships.

Taking Part in Games and Theme Activities

Don’t be a wallflower at theme parties; actively participate in the games and activities organized. Whether it’s a dance competition, costume contest, or trivia quiz, take part and have fun. These activities are designed to bring people together and create a lively and interactive atmosphere. Even if you’re not the most outgoing person, challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the opportunity to have a great time.

Tips for Family Friendly Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Cruise ship theme parties are not just for adults – they can be a fun and memorable experience for the whole family. Here are some tips to ensure that theme parties are family-friendly and enjoyable for everyone.

Choosing Family Appropriate Themes

When selecting theme parties to attend as a family, make sure the themes are suitable for all ages. Avoid parties that may have adult-oriented themes or activities. Look for themes like pirate night, superhero party, or Disney character night that cater to different age groups and interests.

Dressing Children for Theme Parties

Involve your children in choosing their outfits for theme parties. Let them express their creativity and imagination when selecting costumes. Make sure their outfits are comfortable and safe for them to move around in. Additionally, consider practicality – choose costumes that are easy to put on and take off, especially for younger children who may need to use the restroom more frequently.

Ensuring Safety and Comfort for Kids

While attending theme parties, ensure the safety and comfort of your children. Keep an eye on them during crowded events and make sure they stay within your sight. Dress them in breathable fabrics and provide appropriate footwear to prevent discomfort or potential injuries. Remember to bring any necessary items such as snacks, water, or entertainment to keep them occupied during the party.

The Ultimate Guide To Cruise Ship Theme Parties

Cruise Ship Theme Parties for Couples and Singles

Cruise ship theme parties provide unique opportunities for both couples and singles to have a fantastic time. Here are some suggestions for making the most of theme parties based on your relationship status.

Romantic Theme Parties for Couples

Couples can embrace the romantic atmosphere of cruise ship theme parties by dressing up in matching or complementary outfits. Take advantage of the dance floor and enjoy slow dances or lively dances together. Participate in couple-oriented activities like couple trivia contests, love song karaoke, or photo booths. Use theme parties as a chance to create special memories with your partner while having a great time.

Fun Ideas for Singles at Theme Parties

Singles can make the most of theme parties by embracing their individuality and enjoying the freedom that comes with it. Dress up as your favourite character or in a creative costume that reflects your personality. Use theme parties as an opportunity to meet new people and strike up conversations with fellow cruisers who share similar interests or outfits. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and have a blast on the dance floor or at the party games.

Mix and Mingle Opportunities

Cruise ship theme parties often include mix and mingle events where passengers can meet and socialize with others. Take advantage of these opportunities to make connections, whether it’s for friendship or romance. Engage in conversations, participate in ice-breaking activities, and exchange contact information if you feel a connection. Theme parties create a relaxed and fun-filled environment that encourages socialization and interaction among passengers.

Unique Cruise Ship Theme Party Ideas

While there are common types of cruise ship theme parties, some cruise lines and ships offer unique and creative party ideas. Here are a few examples of these unique theme parties that can add excitement to your cruise experience:

Musical Theme Parties

Musical theme parties are all about celebrating a specific genre or era of music. From rock and roll to disco, passengers can dance the night away to their favourite tunes. These parties often feature live performances, DJs, and themed decorations to create an immersive music experience onboard.

Sci-Fi or Fantasy Based Themes

Sci-fi or fantasy based theme parties transport passengers into the realm of their favourite movies, TV shows, or books. Whether it’s Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones, these parties allow cruisers to dress up as their beloved characters and engage in activities related to the chosen theme. It’s a fantastic opportunity for fans to celebrate their fandom in a lively and entertaining setting.

Parties Based on Popular Cultures or Fandoms

Cruise ships may organize theme parties that celebrate popular cultures or fandoms. From comic book heroes to popular video game franchises, these parties cater to fans of all kinds. Passengers can engage in discussions, showcase their fan art or memorabilia, and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for a specific culture or fandom.

Customizing Your Cruise Experience with Theme Parties

Cruise lines often offer passengers the chance to participate in theme party planning and provide valuable input for future parties. Here are some ways you can get involved and contribute to the customization of your cruise experience.

Participating in Theme Party Planning

Some cruise lines invite passengers to join focus groups or provide feedback on potential theme party ideas. Take advantage of these opportunities and share your thoughts and suggestions. This way, you can have a direct impact on the types of theme parties that are planned onboard. Your input can help shape the future of theme parties and ensure that they align with the preferences and expectations of passengers.

Contributing Ideas for Future Parties

If you have unique and creative ideas for theme parties, don’t hesitate to share them with the cruise line. Write to them, participate in online forums, or submit suggestions through onboard feedback forms. Cruise lines are often open to new ideas and appreciate input from passengers. Your ideas could inspire exciting and innovative theme parties that enhance the overall cruise experience for everyone.

Sharing Experiences and Suggestions

After participating in a theme party, share your experiences and suggestions with the cruise line or fellow passengers. Write reviews, share photos on social media, or participate in online forums dedicated to cruise experiences. By sharing your thoughts and recommendations, you can help others make informed decisions and create a community of cruisers who can exchange ideas and tips for future theme parties.

Troubleshooting Common Theme Party Issues

While cruise ship theme parties are generally enjoyable, issues can arise that may require troubleshooting. Here are some common problems and their solutions:

Dealing with Unplanned Situations

In the event of a sudden change in schedule or cancellation of a theme party, stay calm and flexible. Cruise lines may have valid reasons for making changes, such as weather conditions or technical difficulties. Look for alternative activities or parties that are still taking place and embrace the opportunity to try something different. Remember, the cruise line’s priority is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of passengers.

Addressing Dress Code Difficulties

If you encounter difficulties with the dress code for a theme party, seek assistance from the cruise ship’s staff. They can provide guidance on appropriate attire or offer alternatives if you don’t have the necessary clothing. It’s important to respect the dress code to maintain the integrity of the theme party and create a cohesive and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.

Solving Socialization Concerns at Parties

If you’re feeling apprehensive about socializing at theme parties, remember that most passengers are in the same boat. Start by observing what others are doing, join group activities or games, or strike up conversations with people who seem friendly or approachable. Chances are, many fellow cruisers are also looking to make connections and have a good time. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy the party to the fullest.

In conclusion, cruise ship theme parties are a fantastic way to enhance your cruise experience and create lasting memories. Whether it’s a formal ball, a cultural celebration, or a holiday extravaganza, these parties offer something for everyone. By planning ahead, choosing suitable outfits, and actively participating in the festivities, you can maximize the fun and enjoyment of cruise ship theme parties. Families, couples, and singles alike can find opportunities for excitement and engagement, while unique and creative theme party ideas add an extra touch of excitement to your cruise. Get involved in the customization of your cruise experience and troubleshoot any issues that may arise to ensure a smooth and enjoyable theme party experience.

The Best Cruise Ship Theme Parties and Where to Find Them

Cruise ship deck party

Carnival Cruises:

  • Carnival Cruises is known for its signature 80s Rock'n'Glow Deck Party.
  • They also have a Caribbean-themed party known as a Mega Deck Party on longer itineraries.
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • The ships Vista and Horizon are said to have a Latin dance party known as Amor Cubano.
  • Carnival also has a formal night. It has been a while since I have been on one of “The Fun Ships”, but I seem to remember them being a bit stricter about the dress code than a lot of their competitor cruise lines. Guests who were not dressed more formally on elegant nights would be denied seating in the main dining rooms and forced to eat at the buffet. Cruises six days or longer usually have two Cruise Elegant evenings.

Celebrity Cruises

  • A '60s party,
  • a Motown party,
  • a Latin party called Sizzle,
  • a rock masquerade entitled Masque,
  • And a silent disco. (They seem to be the only cruise line that does this, which is quite surprising considering the noise complaints we used to get on party nights when I worked in the guest services department of one of their competitors.)
  • White Hot Parties are also held on some itineraries where everyone wears white.
  • Their formal night has been rebranded as “evening chic” which is supposed to be less formal than formal, but smarter than smart casual.

Costa Cruises

  • Costa cruises are also said to have a white night and a 70s party.
  • Some itineraries also feature a black & red night and a masquerade party.

Disney Cruise Line

  • Disney Cruise Line is known for its Pirates of the Caribbean Deck Party complete with a fireworks display. (And let me tell you, pyrotechnics on a cruise ship with loads of kids on board? That sounds like a logistical and safety nightmare! ...But also, probably a lot of fun.)
  • The Disney Wonder is also said to have a Pixar Pals Party,  while the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have a Frozen Party.
  • Each cruise also has an optional “Dress-up night” (where you are encouraged to dress in formal attire, not pirate attire - just to clarify what they mean by “dressing up”).

MSC Cruises

  • White parties are also common on MSC cruises.
  • Other theme parties include a Tropical Party,  a Flower Glory Party  (A 70s party), a Carnival party (themed around Brazillian carnivals and not MSC's competitor)  and a Space Party (I would like to experience that one).
  • Cruises longer than seven days have two formal nights, often referred to as Gala Nights.

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • Norwegian’s Mega ships (Breakaway class or bigger) are known for their Glow parties where guests are encouraged to wear neon colours.
  • On the smaller ships, they used to have White Hot Parties where guests were encouraged to wear all white. They have now (updated 2023) done away with the White Hot Party and the Glow Party has become the signature party fleetwide. You won't look out of place in white but pack your neon too.
  • Other theme nights you may find on an NCL ship (dependent on the length of cruise and itinerary) include Latin night, Caribbean Night, a 50s & 60s sock hop, 70s night, 80s night, a country hoedown and a Latin dance party.
  • There will be at least one “Dress up or not night” per cruise, with the possibility of more on longer itineraries.

P&O Cruises

  • P&O is known for a Bianco party, their version of the White Party,  as well as a Nero party, the antithesis of a white party where everyone wears black. Way to shake things up, P&O!
  • They are also rumoured to have a Back to School Party.
  • P&O seems to be most well known for its Gatsby Party. From what I understand, this overlaps their signature party and their formal night. Apparently, they do 1920s dance classes and sequinned headband-making craft sessions in preparation for it.

Royal Caribbean:

  • A 70s night or 'Disco Inferno' is also a common theme night on Royal Caribbean, but they seem to have replaced the 70s party with a 90s party on The Harmony of the Seas.
  • They also host a Red Party on the Harmony of the Seas, a high-energy party with DJs, surprise performances, special effects and technology.
  • Some of the other parties you may experience on Royal Caribbean include a Black & White Night, a 50s, 60’s or 80’s party or a Country Western party.
  • Toga parties and Caribbean parties (dependant on the itinerary) also happen on occasion.
  • Sometimes on Royal Caribbean, the formal night is replaced with a masquerade ball (pre-pandemic these masks covered your eyes not your mouth but that may have changed). Cruises that are seven days long or longer usually have two formal nights, the first one being a bigger deal than the second.  (Formal attire is recommended but not mandatory.)

Virgin Voyages:

  • Virgin Voyages obviously does things differently. They have swopped out the white night for a red night or ‘Scarlet Night’ which is said to feature art installations and performances throughout the ship. It’s less a party and more a ship-wide activation.
  • It may also be the only cruise line that doesn’t do a formal night.
  • Apparently, the spa is also the location of a spa party complete with DJs.

Additional Parties

  • In addition to this, Sailaway parties are standard on most cruise lines
  • Halloween, New Year's Eve and Christmas have their own theme parties
  • If you’re sailing off the coast of the USA, you can also look forward to parties that commemorate the Super Bowl, the 4th of July and St. Patrick's Day.
  • If you cross the equator, there's also a party for that.

Theme Nights On Cruise Ships (Everything You Need to Know) – Examples

What is a themed night.

A themed night on a cruise ship where guests and staff dress up with a specific theme in mind.

Colour-themed nights are very popular – particularly White Night, which is held on many different cruise lines.

How Do You Find Out In Advance What The Theme Will Be?

Cruise theme nights are included in your cruise fare, but you need to check online to find out what the theme on your cruise might be, so you can pack accordingly.

You can normally find out in advance which themed nights might be held by logging into your online cruise account.

You could join a Facebook “Roll Call” which is a Facebook group specifically for the sailing you are taking. Others already in the group may be able to advise you.

If in doubt – guess! White night parties are very common, followed by 80s and 70s parties. Pack something that you could wear that would fit the theme, just in case!

Here Is What Some Of The Cruise Lines Suggest

Black and White Night, 50’s/60’s/70’s/80’s, Country Western, Masquerade Ball, Toga Parties. These are examples and are subject to change. Royal Caribbean
Every MSC cruise offers themed nights on board, including White Parties, Elegant Nights, Flower Party and more!  Guests are encouraged to bring outfits that go with each of the themed nights. MSC
Gala Evenings follow one of four themes – either Black and White, Red and Gold, Masquerade or Roaring 20s. You’ll find many nods to these themes in the way your ship is decorated, the musical acts performing throughout the night, and in the signature cocktails and dishes available that evening in our bars and restaurants. It Sounds Like Disney May Have Had Problems With Themed Nights In The Past…

During themed cruises and onboard celebrations like Pirate Night, Guests are invited to dress in costume. We value safety and good judgment and ask Guests to choose costumes that are family friendly, not obstructive, objectionable, offensive or violent. To avoid any disappointment or delay in the boarding process, please refrain from bringing toys or props that resemble guns, knives or other related implements. Disney Cruise Line

Do You Have To Get Involved In Themed Night Parties?

Not at all, joining in is completely voluntary. If dressing up isn’t your thing, there is no need to do it!

Can I Hire Themed Clothing Onboard?

The only cruise line that advertises clothing hire is Cunard.

Gentlemen can hire tuxedos including shirts, trousers and dinner jackets on board from the shops – these are to wear on their “Gala Nights,” not themed nights as such.

Tuxedo packages range from $90 for one night up to $250 for 5 nights.

They don’t hire any sort of clothing hire for ladies, suggesting instead that they buy something from one of the onboard shops.

I took a cruise on the last Ocean Liner, Cunards Queen Mary 2. Cunard has very strict dress codes. Find out what I thought of that here:

The Happiest Travels on Earth

Cruise ship themed nights: what you need to know.

Written by:

Heading on a cruise in 2023? There’s so much to remember when you’re packing your bags! From sunscreen, to bathing suits and little accessories like a key card holder, you might not remember one important thing… themed nights!

That’s right! Cruise ships are known for their themed nights onboard… think white night, red night and even pirate night! So what should you remember to throw in your bag at the last minute?

Here’s our guide to themed nights onboard some of your favorite cruise lines!

Norwegian Cruise Line

cruise night themes

Depending on the length of your cruise, you are in for some exciting nights! Aside from the classic formal nights that usually make an appearance on cruises, guests should expect to see some other special nights.

White Hot/Glow Party

cruise night themes

This one requires you to bring a white outfit on your cruise. The premise? Wear white and dance the night away. Guests can find family friendly dance parties as well as after-hours adult-only parties to show off their dance moves.

Latin Night/Caliente Night

Both Latin Night and Caliente Night have roots in Latin music. Caliente is more of a street party that is casual while Latin night is all about hot and steamy dances. Items such as red dresses or pants for women and jeans, collared shirts and fedoras are perfect for men.

70’s & 80’s Night

cruise night themes

Pull those outfits from the back of the closet and throw them in your suitcase for 70’s and 80’s night. I don’t need to tell you what to wear for these two decade evenings, since they are so iconic but remember to pack some leg warmers, parachute pants, platform shoes, bell bottoms and of course a leisure suit.

Disney Cruise Line

cruise night themes

What kind of reporting would be done if we didn’t mention Disney Cruise Line? Home to themes galore, Disney Cruise Line is known for one special themed night onboard all of their ships.

Pirate Night

On all Disney Cruises, Pirate Night is a signature event onboard Disney cruises. Guests are encouraged to channel their inner Jack Sparrow and Captain Hook with themed outfits and accessories. If you happen to forget a full costume, DCL does provide a pirate themed bandana in your room. The night extends over to the dining menus and parties for the night.

Royal Caribbean

cruise night themes

Royal Caribbean is known for throwing some amazing parties and events onboard. Aside from Formal night, which is prominent onboard all RCL ships, Royal has some fun themed nights that you should take note of.

cruise night themes

As the name suggestions, Red Night is just that. There is a Red Night Club that is set up and they encourage guests to don their best red outfit.

Caribbean Night

cruise night themes

Another night that is lots of fun onboard is Caribbean night. Don your favorite flowery and Caribbean prints while you dance the night away.

Keep in mind that on Royal Caribbean, depending on your sailing, time of year and destination that themed nights can vary.

Carnival Cruise Line

cruise night themes

With a mantra like, “The Fun Ships,” you’d expect some theme parties onboard. And that is definitely the case. Aside from your Elegant Evenings, where dressing to impress is the order, depending on your sailing, you can find some other fun nights onboard.

80’s Rock n’ Glow Deck Party

Whether you lived through the 80’s or are just a fan of having fun, this party is for you! Grab your leggings and leg warmers for this one! While it is labeled as a rock n’ glow party, people have reported it’s more 80’s themed with some glow sticks, which are sometimes supplied. Whether you want to be subtle or show off your favorite 80’s fashion, there’s room for everyone to party!

Other Nights Depending on Ship

Carnival reports some other themed nights on select ships such as the Mega Deck Party, White Night and Island Theme Party. Be sure to check information on your specific ship before heading away.

MSC Cruises

cruise night themes

Traditionally associated with Mediterranean Cruises, MSC is not one to shy away from some fun aboard. Even their formal night takes on a different, unique twist that should not be missed.

Officers & Gentlemen Night

MSC’s version of formal night, Officers and Gentlemen Night takes on an elegant twist. Officers are invited to ask ladies to dance, which is traditional in maritime style. Remember to pack your most elegant attire for an evening to remember.

White Party

Another cruise line, another white party. White decor and white outfits take the stage on this fun night! It’s the biggest themed night of the cruise so make sure to bring your favorite white outfit to join in on the fun!

Flower Party

When we say flower party, we mean a 70’s party! Get ready to get your groove on and boogy oogy oggy the night away! This night celebrates the vibes of the 70’s with clothes, music and a fun, chill time. Whether you want to break out those bell bottoms, frayed jeans or just rock some flower attire, all are welcome to enjoy a great time.

There you have it. With some many cruise lines and themed nights, it can be a bit overwhelming to pack for your next cruise! But don’t despair! As long as you’re onboard, you will have the best time enjoying your vacation.

sustainable seafood practices emphasized

Ensuring the sustainability of Alaska's seafood sourcing involves strict adherence to Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification standards. Holland America Line's commitment to RFM certification aligns with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, promoting sustainable fishing practices in Alaska.

All six ships navigating Alaskan waters have received RFM certification through independent audits, guaranteeing seafood traceability from local fishers to guests' plates. This certification underscores a dedication to a Chain of Custody program for legally harvested seafood, fostering local businesses and sustainable fishing practices in Alaska.

Through its partnership with ASMI and RFM certification, Holland America Line showcases a profound commitment to sustainability, responsible sourcing, and the values of local stewardship in Alaska. Guests can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing they're partaking in traceable wild Alaska seafood sourced through ethical and environmentally conscious means.

Culinary Delights From Alaskan Waters

Our exploration of Alaska's sustainable seafood practices now turns to the culinary delights sourced from the pristine waters of the region by Holland America Line. Chef Ethan Stowell collaborates with the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) to create innovative dishes that highlight the abundance of Alaska's waters.

Onboard, guests can savor a diverse selection of seafood options, with over 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon served during Alaska cruises. Some featured dishes include fried Alaska cod sandwiches and roasted fennel crusted Alaska halibut, showcasing the freshness and quality of the seafood.

Additionally, Alaska rockfish, cod, and halibut are among the 800 pounds of fresh seafood offered, ensuring a sustainable and delectable culinary experience for guests. Holland America Line's commitment to providing guests with exceptional culinary experiences from Alaska's waters underscores their dedication to sustainability and guest satisfaction.

Conservation Efforts in Alaska

protecting wildlife in alaska

Partnering with local organizations in Alaska, Holland America Line actively supports sustainable fishing practices and conservation efforts in the region. Through collaboration with ASMI, we promote stewardship of the environment, ensuring the longevity of marine ecosystems.

The RFM certification guarantees the traceability and sustainability of wild-capture fisheries in Alaska, aligning with our commitment to responsible fisheries management. Conservation efforts prioritize the protection of delicate marine ecosystems while upholding the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.

Holland America Line recognizes the importance of maintaining a delicate balance between harvesting seafood and preserving the natural habitats that sustain them. Our dedication to sustainable seafood reflects our deep-rooted respect for the oceans and our ongoing efforts to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the bounties of Alaska's waters.

We remain steadfast in our mission to support conservation initiatives and responsible fishing practices to safeguard Alaska's precious marine resources for years to come.

Sea-to-Plate Freshness in Alaska

In prioritizing the freshness of seafood on Alaska itineraries, Holland America Line exclusively serves 100% fresh, certified sustainable Alaska seafood. Guests can indulge in the sea-to-plate experience through the Savor My Catch program, where they can have their fresh catch prepared onboard for a truly unique dining adventure.

As part of the global fresh fish program launched in October 2023, daily fresh fish specials are offered, allowing guests to savor a variety of freshly prepared seafood dishes. Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the Fresh Fish Ambassador, brings his expertise to the table with signature creations like Fresh Black Cod Yuzu and Morimoto Epice Lobster Tails, enhancing the culinary journey on board.

Holland America Line's commitment to regionally inspired cuisine ensures that every dish reflects the essence of Alaska, making the sea-to-plate experience an unforgettable highlight of their Alaska itineraries.

We use the McKinley Chalet Resort near Denali National Park in Alaska. It offers comfortable accommodations and easy access to the park. Our partnership enhances the Alaskan cruisetour with cozy lodging in the heart of stunning landscapes.

Where Does Holland America Go in Alaska?

We journey to breathtaking destinations like Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier, and Denali National Park. Our itineraries offer access to stunning landscapes and wildlife. Holland America Line's prime docking locations in Alaska provide unforgettable experiences.

How Many Ships Does Holland America Have in Alaska?

We have six ships in Alaska. All are RFM certified, offering sustainable seafood. Guests enjoy 2,000+ pounds of Alaska Salmon. Chef Ethan Stowell's creations like Alaskan salmon chop and roasted fennel crusted Alaska halibut delight.

How Many People Were on a Holland America Alaska Cruise?

We had a wonderful time on our Holland America Alaska cruise, where the number of passengers varied, creating diverse experiences across different stateroom categories and common areas. The ship accommodated thousands of guests.

In conclusion, Holland America Line's commitment to sustainable seafood on its Alaska itineraries is like a beacon of light shining on the importance of responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.

By partnering with organizations like ASMI and serving fresh Alaskan seafood on board, they aren't only providing guests with delicious culinary experiences but also promoting conservation efforts in the region.

It's a ripple effect of positive impact, spreading awareness and support for our oceans.

How do you find out about the theme nights and parties on your cruise before the actual sailing.

cruise night themes

Someone asked me this great question recently: how do folks find out about the special themed nights/parties on their cruises before the cruise actually starts?  While most agree that there’s no way to know for absolute CERTAIN (itineraries change all the time, after all), there are definitely some ways we can get some insight. Because, let’s face it, us girls want to bring the right clothes, now don’t we?  Ok, ok, and some of you fashionable dudes do as well.  I see you.

Here are some ways to peer into the crystal ball of all your sailing’s themed festivities:

1. Join some Facebook groups.  Your cruise’s “roll call” as well as the general groups for your cruise line are going to be full of knowledgeable folks who’ve either been on the same ship and route before or know someone who has.  Trust me, someone always has.

2. If you’re sailing Royal Caribbean , download the Royal App to your phone a few days before you sail, log into it and you’ll get access to the full itinerary for your sailing under “Daily Planner”.  The themed nights, parties and activities are all listed right there.  Really simple and really reliable.

3. If you’re cruising Carnival, check out this incredibly helpful article from the Cruise Spotlight blog which tells you which parties are currently being offered on each ship!  It’s like having a cheat sheet:  https://cruisespotlight.com/what-theme-parties-are-on-a-carnival-ship/

4. Royal Caribbean blog has an incredible resource where you can simply search by ship and find its recent Cruise Compasses , giving you the ship’s full itinerary.  You can search by ship and date to find the latest ones:  https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/cruise-compass?ship=279

5. You old pal Reddit!  Reddit’s got some great cruising subs: Shoutout to r/RoyalCaribbean and r/CarnivalCruiseFans (to both of which I’m extremely addicted), as well as r/Cruise for more general info.  Post to one of these and you’re sure to find someone who’s sailed on your ship recently and can tell you all about the parties.

6. If all else fails, we’ll just make assumptions!  Most cruises these days are offering an 80s night, with 70s nights coming in a close second.  I’ve also been hearing of the fabled 90’s night on many sailings… sigh… I’ll get to you someday, 90’s night…  White parties (where everyone dresses in, you guessed it, all white) used to be de riguer on most sailings and I do still hear of them quite frequently.  It can’t hurt to pack an all white outfit, just in case (you can wear it anyway, even if the White party doesn’t happen).

Special thanks to my pals on Reddit and Facebook and especially the awesome Cydney Atkins for sharing their best cruise theme-night prediction tips with me for this article!

Dressing for Theme Nights: Fun and Festive Cruise Attire

One of the most exciting things about going on a cruise is the opportunity to dress up for theme nights. Cruise theme nights allow you to express your creativity, have fun, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you’re planning to attend a formal night, a tropical/Hawaiian night, a pirate night, an 80s/90s night, a Halloween costume party, a masquerade ball, or a country-western night, there are dress code guidelines you need to follow to look your best. In this article, we will provide you with comprehensive information on how to dress for cruise party theme nights. We will cover the dress code guidelines, creative outfit ideas, packing tips, and recommendations to help you make the most of your cruise experience. So, let’s get started!

Types of Theme Nights on Cruises

Formal night.

Formal night is one of the most elegant and glamorous events on a cruise ship. The dress code for formal night varies from cruise line to cruise line, but generally, it involves wearing black-tie attire or a formal gown. For men, this means a tuxedo or a dark suit with a dress shirt and tie. For women, this means a full-length gown or a cocktail dress. Some cruise lines also allow dressy pantsuits for women. It’s important to check with your cruise line to ensure you’re following their dress code guidelines for formal night.

Tropical/Hawaiian Night

Tropical/Hawaiian night is all about embracing the island vibe. This theme night usually takes place on a deck or poolside, and the dress code is casual and colorful. Men can wear a Hawaiian shirt or a tank top with shorts, while women can wear a sundress or a floral top with shorts or a skirt. Don’t forget to accessorize with a lei or a flower crown to complete the look.

Pirate Night

Pirate night is one of the most popular theme nights on cruises, and it’s a great opportunity to channel your inner Jack Sparrow. The dress code for pirate night is pirate-inspired attire, which can include a pirate hat, an eye patch, a bandana, a vest, and boots. Men can wear a white shirt with a vest and a sash, while women can wear a corset with a skirt and a headscarf. Don’t forget to accessorize with a sword or a parrot.

80s/90s Night

80s/90s night is a throwback to the decades of big hair, neon colors, and shoulder pads. The dress code for this theme night is retro-inspired attire, which can include a denim jacket, a neon-colored shirt, a scrunchie, and leg warmers. Men can wear a leather jacket with a band T-shirt and ripped jeans, while women can wear a mini skirt with a crop top and high-top sneakers.

Mix and Match your Pieces

When packing for theme nights, try to mix and match your pieces to create different looks. For example, wear the same Hawaiian shirt with different shorts or wear the same pirate hat with a different shirt.

Pack Accessories to Enhance your Outfits

Accessories are a great way to enhance your outfits and make them more festive. Pack items like leis, flower crowns, and pirate accessories to complete your look.

Don’t Forget Comfortable Shoes

While it’s important to look your best on theme nights, it’s also important to be comfortable. Pack comfortable shoes that you can dance in and walk around the ship comfortably.

Carnival Theme Parties 2024

Are Carnival Cruises Just Giant Parties?

I have a reputation for being cheap and nerdy and Carnival has a reputation for offering cruises with a wild, party atmosphere. So is either actually true?

Yes and partly. You’ll likely find me doing one of two things on a cruise. First, gorging on complimentary food and calculating how much the same meal would cost me on land in my home city of Seattle (sometimes I actually cheer when I determine I’ve reached the break even point on my cruise fare). And second, reading, walking while listening to an audiobook, or looking for wildlife on an outside deck. Cheap. Nerdy.

As for Carnival, it has somewhat embraced its reputation as the party cruise line by referring to vessels as “fun ships,” calling the daily onboard schedule of events the “Fun Times,” with its “Funderstruck” marketing campaign, and by offering onboard theme parties.

Know though that your experience on Carnival will vary depending on the specific ship, itinerary, and time of year. I once sailed with my toddler on a spring break Carnival cruise so wild I had to have the sex talk with him a decade earlier than planned. But I’ve also sailed on many Carnival cruises that have felt more peaceful and subdued (look for longer sailings and dates when school is in session). Regardless of which ship, itinerary, or time of year you sail though, you’ll find your fellow Carnival cruisers among the friendliest at sea and your ship will offer several onboard theme parties for those who like to dress up, let loose, dance, and have a good time.

While I nearly always sleep through them (see, nerd), you should definitely check out these parties if interested! So…

What are Theme Parties on Carnival Cruises?

An 80's Rock and Glow party on a Carnival Cruise Ship in 2023.

Usually (but not always, so check your Fun Times schedule of events for the location) held in the evening near the main lido pool or in the atrium, theme parties are short (typically lasting around 30-45 minutes) and energetic gatherings led by the cruise director and Fun Squad with music and dancing consistent with a particular theme. Guests are encouraged to dress in accordance with the theme, but it’s not required. (Everything I own is from the 90’s, so I just show up to that party in my regular gear only to feel low-key offended when I hear: “Nailed it!”)

Themes include decades parties from the 70’s through the 90’s, Mega Deck where you can wear blue or red, White Hot where you can dress in white and dance amidst black lights, 80’s Rock and Glow where the Fun Squad will pass around glow sticks, Motown, Mardi Gras (sometimes including a parade), a Hawaiian themed Tiki Party, and Backyard Bash featuring country music and line dancing. Relatively new to Carnival are “silent” parties where music is played through provided headphones.

Which Theme Parties will be on my Carnival Cruise?

Exciting Cruise Nightlife Options on Celebrity

Last updated: June 4th, 2023

Couple enjoying disco night

  • Find a Cruise

When the sun goes down, cruise nightlife options abound on board a Celebrity Cruises luxury cruise ship. Cruise entertainment is delightful and diverse, providing something for everyone.

Thrilling Theatre Performances

Enjoying a live performance is one of the best things to do on a cruise . Watch exhilarating Broadway-worthy productions with casts of gifted performers in Celebrity’s grand theater. Elyria, an original musical, is an adults-only production that puts an intriguing twist on a fairytale with enchanting, dream-like visuals and acrobatics alongside powerful singing and dancing.

Lively performance in Rock City, Celebrity Cruises

You may want to dance in the aisle while watching a performance of Rock City, a live stadium-style concert featuring rock anthems that will take you back and rock you forward. Other live performances include magic shows, comedy skits, and music performances. Check out your daily copy of Celebrity Today for performance times.

Bountiful Bars and Lounges

With some of the best mixologists and sommeliers in the business right onboard your ship, you’ll have no trouble finding the right venue to suit your cruise nightlife mood and taste.

People hanging out at Martini Bar for cruise nightlife on Celebrity Edge

Martini BarChill out, literally, at Martini Bar & Crush thanks to the shaved ice-topped bar, where you can meet friends and make friends while sipping a decadent specialty martini. Stop by for an after-dinner or after-show drink if you’re not ready to head to your stateroom, and watch the excitement build as the bartenders do their impressive multi-cup pours.

Celebrity Cruises offers fine dining experiences throughout the ship, and at World Class Bar , we offer a “fine drinking” experience as well. Smooth, special, and sophisticated describe the bar’s space, ambiance, and drinks, which are made by bowtied mixologists using uncommon ingredients and sometimes for one night only. Cruise nightlife can begin or end here as you raise a handcrafted-cocktail toast to the start of your cruise or bid it a fond farewell.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Gala night, theme night, white nights. How do you know?

HardToPort

Cool Cruiser

I’m cruising on Divina in April 2023. I generally dress more “up” unless I’m in the pool and I do like a tux on gala nights and a jacket on most other nights that I’m in the MDR. However I’m doing this cruise solo so definitely not packing my tux because when travelling solo I am a “carry on only” traveller. So, I will bring a jacket and slacks but how do I find out if we have any white nights or theme nights planned?

if there is a place on the website where I can find this info I’d like to know. While I’m older (63) and can’t dance the night away anymore I do like to participate dress-wise and enjoy the festivities albeit as an observer.

Any info from recent Divina itineraries to help me pack?

I'm not aware of any place where you would learn of the "parties" onboard any particular upcoming MSC cruise. If you're sailing a 7-nt cruise, you most assuredly will have a White Night party and a 70's Night party. So bring some white clothes and your old bell bottoms so you're ready!

Divina seems to be doing mostly those short-haul weekend escape cruises to Ocean Cay, etc. No gala night on such less than 7 night cruises. Either way: Trousers and collared shirt is more than enough for a gentlemen's MSC's gala night.

As regarding theme nights they're entirely optional and even on say, a white night it is common to see people with other colors on the audience. The daily planner will tell you the previous night what days are themed and such things. The short-haul cruises tend to be more relaxed dress wise, IMHO.

Sorry. It is a 7 night cruise. I should have included that info.

Boa tarde amigo,

Yes, I know a shirt and slacks are fine. It’s just a personal preference that I wear a jacket to dinner.

cheira bem, cheira Lisboa.

I’ve been on the Divina 3 times since October - Two 7 night and One 12 night. Both 7 nights had 2 Gala Nights, a White Night & Flower Power (60s/70s) night.

Muito obrigado pelas palavras amigas!... (Many thanks to the kind words!...) Just out of curiosity: Are you from Portuguese origin!... So nice to see this here!... 🙂

That's my preference as well to use a jacket for dinner, sometimes even on non gala nights!... But sadly the worldwide trends to each time less formality... And TBHH; airline luggage allowances are each time lower elsewhere as well, so now my trick is just to dress the suit for my flights and then to use the jacket on gala night and on nights when the temperature would be on the lower side. By the norm I use collared shirt and trousers every day for dinner on a cruise. Here in Europe we seem to be sort on the more formal side of the pond on that one, but really a jacket I'd only "compulsorily" to use on the first gala night for Captain's presentation. On the 2nd gala I and most of the crowd use to relax a little more... Back in the day I used to use a tie for gala night... Not anymore!...

Tenha um bom fim-de-semana!... (have a nice weekend!...)

I’m Anglo Canadian not Portuguese, but I married into a Portuguese family so I’m an honorary Portuguese now. They’re from Pico and I love the Azores. I’ve been to Lisboa and Porto as well.

I love Fado, red wine and Portuguese food. And the people. Right now I listen to Cuca Roseta a lot. Beautiful voice, wonderful fadista.

Ta log, amigo e boa noite.

Thanks

Wonderful, many thanks! I'm from Lisbon, currently living in the countryside near Holly Mother of Fátima Shrine!... But I know very well the wonderful Azores and their huge relationship with the sea!... I had family and friends there for quite a while and I have extensively traveled there!... Wonderful food there as well, especially the famous "cozido das Furnas" (such a unique volcanic land prepared meat and vegetables Portuguese stew from Furnas in Azores)!...

Cuca Roseta is a very interesting, talented and versatile women voice, far from only Fado!... And a few years ago she worked with a small cruise venture here in Portugal that didn't endure too much!... I believe she was one of the cruise directors for late MS Funchal at their final operational year! So; cruising is very well on our both interests!... I currently am unable to take any cruise for many reasons... Maybe next year if things go the right way, who knows!... But it is a very enjoyable sort of holidays and it is becoming quite popular here!...

Tenha um bom domingo!... (Have a nice Sunday!...)

Nearly 80 "leaplings" of all ages celebrated their leap day birthday on a Caribbean cruise in 2020. Organizers expect a similar turnout this year. Jason Bohn hide caption

Nearly 80 "leaplings" of all ages celebrated their leap day birthday on a Caribbean cruise in 2020. Organizers expect a similar turnout this year.

Thursday is a leap day, the rare date of February 29 that's added to the calendar nearly every four years.

That means the roughly 5 million people worldwide born on that day — aka "leaplings" — will get to celebrate on their actual birthday. Others will spend it commemorating a leap day wedding, engagement or anniversary.

For many, Thursday may just be another day — but one they'd like to use wisely by doing something they love, taking time for themselves or giving back to others. That can take many forms.

Why do we leap day? We remind you (so you can forget for another 4 years)

Strange News

Why do we leap day we remind you (so you can forget for another 4 years).

"Think about that extra that you can give or that extra that you can do, and enjoy that bonus day that we only get once every four years," said Katheryn Jager, of Cedar Park, Texas.

Jager, 50, has big plans for the day: She and her fiancé are "taking the leap," getting married in their backyard surrounded by friends and family on the four-year anniversary of their first date.

How Do You Celebrate A Leap Year Birthday?

She said their first date in 2020 wasn't specifically planned for leap day. It was just the day that the two of them — longtime friends who reunited after being divorced and widowed — happened to be free. The day now carries special significance, not to mention some perks.

"It has been fun to hear how many people have congratulated my fiancé on being so clever as to get an anniversary which only occurs once every four years," Jager said. "He very happily tells them we'll celebrate close to the day."

Jager is one of the more than 100 respondents who answered NPR's callout asking how people plan to celebrate leap day this year. Their responses ranged from the elaborate to the everyday.

Several leap day babies and their family members said they'll be celebrating with birthday trips abroad — on a cruise, to a new continent or to a bucket list city. Others said they'll be enjoying leap day birthdays with parties at home, many inspired by the age they'll technically be turning.

"We are hosting an 8 year old party!" wrote Grace Boersma, who will be turning 32 by other calculations. "Going ice skating then heading back to a house for a 'Frozen Food Feast,' as 8-year olds love frozen foods (dino chicken nuggets, cheese sticks, fries, etc.). There is also a cocktail part as well for attendees to come up with a cocktail that an 8-year old would like (if they could drink)."

Several people are honoring late relatives born on the day by making family recipes or doing a good deed. Others are celebrating wedding anniversaries, some for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020.

Pop Culture

2024 is a leap year and there's an irish tradition associated with leap day.

Many will try to make the day special for their young children, like the parent who maintains a "leap year fund" to throw her daughter a big celebration every four years, and the family planning a "last first day" party to celebrate the final calendar date their baby has yet to experience.

And lots of people don't have personal ties to the day but still plan to take off work, catch up on chores or use it to enjoy some of their favorite activities, like thrifting, seeing a movie or clocking some extra miles on a run.

"Even the day I gave birth on Leap Day 2016 Facebook asked me 'Did you make the most of your extra day today?' Um, yes Facebook ... I birthed a baby," wrote Stephanie Vazquez. "I would encourage everyone to use that extra day for yourself somehow."

In case you need some inspiration, NPR's Morning Edition spoke to nearly a dozen people around the U.S. about how they're making the most out of leap day.

How to celebrate a leap year birthday

On the 2020 leap day cruise, people celebrated their birthday with a ball on board. Jason Bohn said many of them have kept in touch since.

Many people born on Feb. 29 told NPR that they have strong feelings about which day to celebrate in non-leap years.

Many prefer Feb. 28, reasoning that they were born on the last day of the month. Some go with March 1, since they were born the day after Feb. 28. Others claim both days, or they switch, depending on the year.

Jason Bohn, who is turning 11 (or 44) on Thursday, says that he's in the minority who celebrates on March 1 — and that it's a topic of heavy debate in the leap year community. He's especially plugged in, as a member of the leap day baby group on Facebook and one of the organizers behind the second consecutive leap day cruise.

Bohn was one of nearly 80 leaplings who took a four-day cruise to the Bahamas in 2020. Attendees ranged in age from 1 year old to their upper 70s, and they represented more than 30 states and 10 countries. They celebrated the actual leap day itself at sea with a leap day ball, swapping baby photos and getting to know each other.

People who were born on Feb. 29 often feel left out. Not this year, it's leap year

"When we kind of came together, it was just like we were already family," Bohn said. "We got back home, and two weeks later the world shut down. And it was really comforting to have that group of people that we had met on the cruise. It was almost kind of a second family for a lot of us, and we've stayed in touch throughout the years."

Bohn says about a dozen of the original cruisers will be back this time around, joined by some 60 newcomers. He estimates that all told, leaplings and their families will make up some 250 passengers — "a little bit of a force on that ship."

The West Allis, Wis., resident is excited to get some sun and celebrate with other leaplings. He has helped plan activities — and matching lanyards — to help the group bond. Those include pre-cruise drinks in Miami and another Feb. 29 ball, which he described as the true highlight last time.

"It was just great to just have that time to kind of really focus on ourselves and the thing that makes us all a little more special than most," he added.

Other leap day babies celebrating on land told NPR that they will be spending time with their families, eating at their favorite restaurants, partying with friends and stocking up on freebies from businesses that do leap day giveaways with proof of a Feb. 29 birthday (or at least they did in 2020 ).

A great day to mark an anniversary or even get (re)married

Chris Goonan and his wife, Caroline, returned to the Florida beach where they got married on leap day 2020 — this time with their 1-year-old son.

Several respondents said they'll be celebrating a wedding anniversary on Feb. 29, with a few even planning to get married — or remarried — on the day itself.

Chris Goonan, 33, says he and his wife, Caroline, will be celebrating their "first real wedding anniversary" since they got married in 2020.

They had a destination wedding at Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge, a historic site near Stuart, Fla., where Goonan had been stationed with the Coast Guard. They booked it because of the venue's availability, not the date itself.

"We knew that we wanted to do it in February because all of our family would be coming down from upstate New York," he explained. "And we saw that February 29th was available. It was a Saturday. We didn't even consider that it was a leap year, and we were like, 'Absolutely, we have to do it.'"

This year, the couple plans to travel from their home in Syracuse back to the same beach and eat at the restaurant that catered their wedding. And Goonan says it will be even more special this time, since they are bringing their 1-year-old son with them.

"This will be his first time down to Florida to see the ocean and actually touch the ocean," he said, adding they plan to repeat the tradition every leap year going forward.

Cindy and PJ Gaynard will be celebrating their fifth anniversary, 20 years after they got married.

Wed as teens, they renew vows 71 years later — and share secrets to everlasting love

Goats and Soda

Wed as teens, they renew vows 71 years later — and share secrets to everlasting love.

They specifically wanted to get engaged and married on leap day, in part to buck the pressure they felt to celebrate every single anniversary of the day they met. They couldn't even remember the date, but they say it was July and not February.

"We're like, 'That's a lot of pressure.' So we were just like, 'Well, let's just do it every four years, and every four years we'll celebrate our anniversary really big,'" said Cindy.

They do so by holding vow renewal ceremonies every four years, or as they call it, "getting married again." The Gaynards, who now have two children, have picked a wide variety of themes and asked different friends to officiate each one.

Cindy and PJ Gaynard renew their vows every four years to celebrate their leap day wedding anniversary. Previous venues have included a planetarium, beach, Las Vegas chapel and roller-skating rink. PJ and Cindy Gaynard hide caption

They first got married at a planetarium, underneath star charts representing their connecting trajectories. Their second "wedding" was officiated in Las Vegas close to midnight by an Elvis impersonator, whom they recall being visibly drained from doing weddings all day. The next leap year, they ate cupcakes on a beach in Malibu, Calif., near where they lived at the time.

Then the couple moved to Pittsburgh and celebrated their next anniversary "getting married" at a roller-skating rink while strapped into roller blades. Four years ago, after a snowstorm canceled their travel plans, they threw together a clown-themed wedding at a local "vegan restaurant-slash-vintage shop."

This year, they're hosting a screening of one of Cindy's favorite movies, Pretty in Pink , at PJ's film studio — with a surprise twist.

Cindy says she, like many people, has always hated the ending of the movie, in which Andie (Molly Ringwald) chooses rich-kid Blane (Andrew McCarthy) over lovable Duckie (Jon Cryer) at prom. It was actually shot the other way around at first, says PJ.

"We're going to stop the movie early, do the ending the way that was originally in the script and then get married as Andie and Duckie," he added.

There are plenty of other ways to make the day special

Rachel Nantt is throwing a 2020-themed party on leap day, and plans to dress up in the graduation cap and gown she didn't get to wear (or return) during the pandemic.

Even if you're not celebrating a birthday or anniversary, or rewriting cinema history, there are still things you can do to make your bonus day a little extra special.

That could mean getting more done, from chores to socializing to sleeping in.

One respondent told NPR they're thankful for an extra day to pack up their apartment before their lease ends on March 1. Another says her family always goes out to eat at IHOP, citing her dad's love of puns.

It could also mean doing nothing at all.

"Why not make it a self-care, indulge care, hobby day," wrote Emeka Barclay. "For me, that feels like a day of no social media, no newsfeeds, no politics... I just know that whatever I do, it will be a free day for me."

Others are hosting parties to celebrate the day itself, like graduate student Jillian Winter. She said things can feel bleak and overwhelming, both for those finishing their PhDs and anyone following the news cycle, and she is eager to spread some good cheer.

"Obviously, there will be party games that involve leaping ... Candy will be tossed at people ... There will be a 'shrimp tree,' aka I'll decorate my ficus tree with shrimp ornaments (which will double as party favors)," she wrote. "Folks will share Leap Day secrets and offer up toasts for the bonus day ... Never forget, 'Real life is for March !'"

Unique ways Americans celebrate the holidays, from skiing Santas to Festivus feats

Unique ways Americans celebrate the holidays, from skiing Santas to Festivus feats

For Rachel Nantt and her friends, it will be a day of nostalgia, reflection, and sweatpants. The Fargo, N.D., resident is throwing a party with a 2020 theme — the updated version of the 2016-themed bash she attended four years ago.

The 27-year-old will don the college graduation gown she didn't get to wear during her COVID graduation. The group will play Among Us , the online game that kept many people connected during the early months of the pandemic.

Nantt says she has fielded plenty of jokes about the theme, including attendees saying they should dress up as someone who just got laid off. But she says it's uplifting to think about how far she and her friends have come since that difficult time.

"I feel like I've kind of taken life more by the horns and done what I wanted," she said, pointing to her career transition and new relationship. "And when I was 23, four years ago, I can't say that I was doing that. So I look back and I think, how amazing that I can just be happy and be truly who I am to this day."

And Nantt hopes others can find joy in the day too, even if it's just another Thursday.

MSC Theme Nights 2024: the Schedule for all Ships!

Photo of author

February 21, 2024

theme nights on msc

All MSC Cruises have theme nights, but they can vary between ships . The theme is stated on the on-board program, which can be found in your stateroom the previous evening.

I want to make clear that dressing according to the theme is not mandatory, but if you like to have fun, dance, and really want to participate, it might be a good idea to follow the dress code for each night .

On week-long cruises, there are usually 3 or 4 theme nights, while on other evenings you can dress casually or smartly. So let’s find out the 2024 schedule for theme nights on MSC ships.

Table of Contents

  • White Night

You can find the White Night , or White Party, basically on every MSC cruise!

As the name implies, the dress code for the evening is to dress completely in white .

It should not be very difficult to find something to wear. I’m sure everyone has something in their closet.

Men can wear white pants or light-colored jeans along with a shirt or polo shirt . Perhaps if it’s winter, a white jacket might also fit.

Women can opt for a long or short white dress, a smart jumpsuit, or a matching set . The attire should reflect a chic but comfortable style to enjoy the festive evening that generally ends with music and dancing under the stars .

For the accessories, you can match white shoes, silver jewelry, and a small evening bag.

60s, 70s, 80s and 90s Night

For those who like to take a dip into the past, there is the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s theme night .

You can revive the atmosphere and styles of those years through an explosion of colors, music, and vintage style.

Men can wear flared pants, colorful jackets, t-shirts with prints or looks inspired by the rock stars of those decades.

Women have plenty of choices: psychedelic mini-dresses, skirts with optical or pleated prints, leggings and themed T-shirts or sequin-studded disco outfits .

The accessories can be headbands, oversized sunglasses, and flashy retro-style jewelry.

Make sure to wear something comfy because you will dance to the notes of the timeless hits of those years.

cruise night themes

  • Casual Night

Casual night (on some ships also called smart casual) offers a nice break from elegance and formality .

There are usually at least a couple on these nights on each cruise, and during these evenings you can dress more relaxed.

Men can opt for chino pants or jeans, paired with long-sleeved shirts or polo shirts.

Women can choose simple dresses, skirts with tops, or just pants with blouses.

  • Tropical Night

The Tropical Night has a different name on some ships, you can also find it as Hawaiian Night or Flower Party .

The concept however does not change, you can should dress exotic, festive, and colorful.

Men can wear classic brightly colored Hawaiian shirts and light pants.

Women can wear floral dresses, long skirts, and colorful tops . The accessories can be flower necklaces, bracelets, and themed earrings.

Generally, this evening is followed by a beach party or a tropical pool party.

Gala or Elegant Night on MSC

The night that absolutely cannot be missed on cruise ships is the Elegant one , or as it is called on MSC “ The Gala Night “.

During this evening you can usually take a photo with the captain, and there is an elegant and glamorous atmosphere on board.

Men should wear tuxedos or dark suits, complemented by a tie or bow tie.

Women can wear long evening gowns or cocktail dresses. This evening is also perfect for wearing bright jewelry, elegant watches, and sophisticated accessories.

During the evening, there is generally a gourmet dinner, live music, and different performances.

  • Mediterranean Night

The Mediterranean Night can only be found on some MSC ships. The idea is to enhance the Mediterranean style through food and music.

How to dress for the Mediterranean evening ? I have to say that this evening is the one for which it is most difficult to choose clothing.

It seems that Mediterranean evening is more about the restaurant menu than the actual attire. Some people opt for clothing that recalls the colors of the Italian flag .

If you don’t want to go wrong, you can wear green . During the Mediterranean evening, both the tablecloth and the waiters’ aprons at the restaurant are sage green.

The Magic of Disney’s Themed Cruises

Disney Cruises are much more than just voyages. They are magical escapades where stories come to life.

While almost every Disney Cruise has a theme night (such as Pirate Night or Frozen Night), those events are limited to only a few hours — typically just dinner and a deck party afterward.

Themed Disney cruises elevate this experience by infusing specific themes into every corner of the cruise, creating an immersive adventure for at least one full day — if not the entire cruise. These include:

  • Unique Atmosphere : From staterooms to dining areas, the entire ship transforms according to the theme.
  • Tailored Entertainment : Witness shows, parades, and fireworks displays tailored to the cruise’s unique theme.
  • Themed Activities : Every activity, whether it’s a treasure hunt or a dance party, is designed to resonate with the theme.

Now, let’s look at the six themed cruises that Disney Cruise Line currently offers and one that may or may not be returning.

A Themed Disney Cruise with an Uncertain Future

At least one popular specialty cruise is in limbo at the moment.

7. Star Wars Day at Sea (Suspended)

Combining the magic of Disney with the allure of a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars Day at Sea became an instant hit among cruise aficionados and Star Wars enthusiasts alike. From its inauguration in 2016 up to 2022, these specialized Disney Caribbean cruises set sail on 7-day voyages, punctuated by a special day where Star Wars reigned supreme, complete with characters wandering the decks, movie-themed events, and even the ship’s horn playing the iconic “Imperial March.”

During these 7-Night Caribbean adventures departing from Port Canaveral, passengers were treated to:

  • Epic Encounters : Memorable moments with Star Wars icons, including Chewbacca, R2-D2, and Darth Vader.
  • Out-of-this-World Entertainment : Evening celebrations highlighted by Star Wars music and an unforgettable seaside fireworks display.
  • Galactic Activities : Engagements ranging from costume events, dedicated movie screenings, and trivia to youth club sessions featuring the endearing BB-8.

Unfortunately, as of 2023, this cherished voyage has been put on hiatus . The event’s future remains uncertain despite being a top destination for Star Wars fans from its birth in 2016 to its final cruise in 2022. There is some speculation among fans that the Star Wars cruises were halted due to the launch of the land-locked Galactic Starcruiser at Walt Disney World, but that experience is no longer being offered. Add in the fact that Disney’s website still features a page dedicated to Star Wars Day at Sea , and you can see why eager fans await any hint of its potential return in 2024 or beyond.

Q: Can we still enjoy standard cruise amenities on themed cruises?

A: Yes, the themed cruises offer all the standard included amenities like gourmet dining, entertainment, pools, etc., in addition to the special themed activities and events.

Q: Are costumes allowed or encouraged on these themed cruises?

A: Costumes are encouraged, especially for theme-specific days like Marvel Day or Halloween on the High Seas. However, there are costume guidelines, especially for adults, to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Don’t wear anything that’s “obstructive, objectionable, offensive, or violent”– and don’t bring anything that looks like a weapon (even a toy one). Costume masks that cover the face may only be worn while standing still to have a photo taken with a character. Make sure you consult all of the costume guidelines as you’re making your packing list so you don’t accidentally bring something prohibited onboard.

Q: What if we are not big fans of the specific theme? Will we still enjoy the cruise?

A: While the themes add an extra layer of magic, Disney Cruise Line offers a robust range of entertainment and activities. So even if you’re not a fan of the specific theme, there’s still plenty to enjoy.

Q: Given the slightly higher cost, are special-themed Disney cruises worth it?

A : Weighing the worth of special-themed Disney cruises depends on individual preferences and what one seeks in a vacation experience.

  • Pros : These themed cruises present world-class entertainment, exclusive events, and one-of-a-kind experiences, catering especially to die-hard fans and those looking for something more than the usual cruise.
  • Cons : The premium price might be a barrier for some, and travelers not particularly enamored with the specific theme might not see the added value.

Final Thought : Disney’s special themed cruises are more than just a cruise; they are an immersive narrative journey that brings beloved stories to life. Jaimie and I love the festive seasons, so Halloween and Christmas-themed cruises are a big deal for us. They are undeniably worth the extra investment.

Travel | travel troubleshooter: i paid extra to get to my cruise. why can’t i get reimbursed.

cruise night themes

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: I recently took a Western Mediterranean cruise with my family, which included flight arrangements made through Norwegian Cruise Line. On the morning before our scheduled departure, we tried to check in online, but the first leg of our flight was not showing up on the Delta Air Lines app.

We contacted the NCL air department, and a representative said they needed to reissue the outbound tickets and send us new air confirmations. She told me to go to the airport in the morning and resolve the situation at the Delta check-in desk.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

When I arrived at the airport, the agent could not find our reservation. At this point, Delta only had four seats remaining on the flight, so I purchased the tickets to avoid missing the rest of the flight and the cruise.

I have asked NCL to reimburse us for the $1,796 we had to spend. NCL asked us to file a claim with AON, the travel insurance we had purchased through NCL, but AON has turned down our claim. We’ve also disputed the charge on our credit card, but lost.

At this point, we have exhausted all of our known options in resolving this case ourselves. We would be very grateful if you would consider mediating on our behalf.

— Elaine Simmons, Walnut Creekno

ANSWER: NCL should have given you valid airline tickets. If there was a last-minute glitch, it should have taken care of you instead of sending you to the airport to negotiate with Delta.

My advocacy team and I have been getting quite a few complaints about airline tickets booked through a cruise line. They look a lot like yours. There’s a ticketing glitch, and passengers have to buy new tickets to get to their cruise or to get home. The cruise line refuses to cover the extra costs, pointing to the strict terms and conditions on its site.

In your case, there were also some crossed wires. As I reviewed the correspondence between you, the cruise line and the travel insurance company, it’s clear there was a misunderstanding of what happened and who was responsible.

NCL was acting as your travel advisor when it booked your tickets, so it is responsible for ensuring that the tickets actually get booked. And when it fails, it needs to find a way to get you to your destination at its expense. Again, leaving you to fend for yourself at the airport is not my idea of excellent customer service.

But should you have booked tickets on your own? If you hadn’t, you probably would have missed the start of your cruise. NCL would have attempted to rebook you on a flight that would have allowed you to catch up to your cruise at the next port of call. This is an inelegant solution and cuts your cruise shorter, but you wouldn’t have incurred out-of-pocket expenses.

It looks like you tried to contact one of the NCL executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org . You also reached out to your credit card company for help. Your card’s dispute department should have tried to help you instead of simply denying your claim.

You reached out to my advocacy team. I contacted NCL on your behalf. NCL then contacted you, asked you for receipts for the additional flights and worked with Delta to reimburse you for the extra flights. “We are very grateful to you and your staff for the advocacy work you do,” you said. “You get results!”
