Chicco Viaro Stroller and Travel System Review

Editor’s Note

The Chicco Viaro Stroller that we reviewed is unavailable currently, however, Chicco now has the Chicco Viaro Quick-Fold Travel System for purchase.  But here is the deal… these two systems are identical.  There is nothing different between the two from size to features.  The new system includes the Viaro Quick Fold stroller with easy, one-handed folding as well as the Chicco KeyFit 30 infant car seat and infant seat base for your car.  All we could discover is that the name was just changed to add “quick-fold” so you can feel safe purchasing this travel system, knowing that it is the same as the previous system and that it is a Chicco product. It is also an Amazon Choice product, meaning that it has a good price, good customer reviews, and quick shipping availability.  

We also compared the Chicco Travel System to the Britax B-Agile which has been retired, but Britax has the Britax B-Lively & B-Safe Gen2 Flexfit Travel System for a similar price point.  It also offers a quick fold, large storage, a lightweight aluminum frame, and has the reputation of the Britax name.  It also comes with the B-Lively stroller, the B-Safe Gen 2 infant car seat, and a base.

The Chicco Viaro Stroller and Travel System is an all-in-one travel solution for babies from 4 to 50 pounds.  We bought our Chicco Viaro Travel system right before our second baby’s arrival. After testing it for some months, I can confidently say, my husband and I are big fans.

The Chicco Viaro Stroller

Included in this Travel System is the Chicco Viaro Stroller .  This lightweight stroller is perfect for any outing and accommodates the Chicco Keyfit Car seat for added convenience.

Why I love the Chicco Viaro Stroller

My husband had no problem assembling the Chicco Viaro stroller and we soon found out that it folds up very easily for transport and storage. It fits into our baby’s small closet perfectly, as well as the back of our trunks leaving extra room to spare.  I have also found this stroller to be sturdy and safe.

Once my baby gets bigger, I can use the stroller without the car seat. The adjustable seat back will allow the baby to sit and observe the world or quickly recline for naps on the go. The Chicco Viaro has a weight limit of 50 pounds so the baby will be able to use it well into the toddler years and beyond (for reference, my average sized 6 year old is 48 pounds).

Chicco – a reliable brand

Chicco is a very reputable brand when it comes to children and infant products. Their mission is to make parenting a breeze – an inspiration to what motivated them to create a safe and healthy environment for your baby.

For years, Chicco has been creating top quality baby products for moms and successfully built a respectable reputation for doing just that. Their hundreds of baby products range from cribs to car seats to toys, to name a few.  Chicco’s products regularly win awards for safety, reliability and ease of use. Sturdy Wheels

If you need to stop, the Chicco Viaro has a foot brake at each rear wheel, so you can easily and quickly lock it. It’s easy to engage and disengage the foot brakes. Once you apply the brakes, just fold the stroller with a single push of a button, which can be done with one hand for convenience.

One-hand fold

This is a biggie for me.  When I’m juggling baby gear, I appreciate any feature that can make that easier.  With a one-hand fold and unfold, this stroller is out of the car and ready to roll in no time flat.  I can unfold it, put the car seat in and be on my way.

Storage Capacity

One of the features I love about the Chicco Viaro stroller is its large storage capacity. The stroller has four different cup holders with two at the front for your baby, and the additional two for the parent. You can use it for an extra baby bottle, water bottle, and soda cans, among others.

Additionally, the Chicco Viaro comes with sleek trays for both your baby and the pusher of the stroller. The adult tray is designed to keep items like keys, wallets, cell phone, etc., while the child tray holds snacks and baby toys.

At the back of the seat is a large storage basket which is easily accessible from behind the stroller. This storage area is ideal for holding blankets, purse, diaper bags or other baby materials.

Features of the Chicco Viaro Stroller

Chicco KeyFit Car Seat

The car seat included with the travel system is the Chicco Keyfit . Surprisingly, it is light weight and easily clicks into both the Chicco Viaro stroller and the car seat base.

The Chicco Keyfit car seat fits perfectly into the rear center seat of our car, leaving a comfortable space for other car passengers to sit.  The car seat straps are easily adjusted for our baby to fit snugly, yet comfortable in the car seat.

Generous weight range

The Chicco Keyfit car seat has a weight range of 4-30 pounds.  The removable infant insert padding is for babies 4 -11 pounds.  This insert can be easily removed when your little one starts getting bigger.  The baby will grow out of this car seat when they reach the weight of 30 pounds.  More likely though, they will grow out the height range first, which is 30″.  When the top of your child’s head is an inch away from the top of the seat, it’s time to transition to a convertible car seat.

Easiest to install

You can easily gauge whether the car seat is installed correctly by looking at the bubble level indicators, which are on each side of the car seat base.  Adjust the base if the bubble is not in between the appropriate lines.  Because every car is different, it’s nice to have the bubble level indicator as an easy double check.

To adjust the base, the Recline Sure spring-assisted leveling system comes to the rescue.  Use the buttons to adjust the base up or down so that the bubbles are level.

The Chicco Keyfit car seat is easy to remove from the vehicle (without waking baby) so that the car seat can be transported around.  Having the Chicco Viaro stroller to seamlessly transition the Chicco Keyfit into is an added bonus.

• The roomy weight capacity (30 lbs) is convenient and will take your baby through most of its first year, if not beyond.

• The five-point design of the harness provides better security and maximum comfort for your little one.
• The Chicco Keyfit car seat seamlessly transfers from car to stroller especially when you don’t want to wake your sleeping baby.
• The removable infant insert padding can be easily taken out when your little one start growing bigger.

However, every product has its own cons. Though they are minor objections you can live it (we did and we’re fine), here are some things to be aware of:

• Securing the base to the car seats may be difficult for some. In fact, it can slightly wiggle, and this may be worrisome for some moms.  You will want to install the base tightly with no wiggle room by pulling on the adjustment straps firmly.
• The Chicco Keyfit’s cushioning and extra padding could be too warm for some babies, especially during summer months.
• Some users felt that the sunshade of the Chicco Keyfit alone was not quite large enough to shield the baby from the sun.
• Longer babies may find these seats uncomfortable, even if their weight limits falls on the average.  For this reason, the car seat maxes out at 30 pounds or 30 inches, whichever comes first.
• Some reviewers felt that the fabric of the seat and neck cushion is a bit rougher when compared to other brands.  However, my baby was always comfortable in this seat, even on longer journeys.

Let’s Compare: Britax B Agile & B Safe 35 vs Chicco Viaro

We’ve talked a lot about the Viaro travel system. Now I want to put it up against one of the best travel systems: the Britax B Agile B Safe . For 2 travel systems that are so similar, these 2 are actually quite far apart on a few aspects.

With both of these car seats, the manufacturers have definitely focused more on safety and maneuverability and left out the smaller details. This isn’t such a bad thing. With either system, you are going to get one of the safest car seats on the market, since Britax and Chicco consistently dominate the safest car seat lists. You just can’t beat that.

I will say that the Chicco car seat isn’t as deep as the Britax. This makes it so much easier to get the baby in and out. But I do like the shape of the Britax from a safety standpoint. As for installing the car seats, they are both ridiculously easy to install. They both have easy latch anchors and easy tightening. I believe that the Britax base is better because of the SafeCell technology.

The biggest differences are found in the strollers. My biggest pet peeve with the Viaro is that it doesn’t lock when folded. That makes transporting it or moving it such an awkward chore. Add in the fact that it’s 2 pounds heavier, and it becomes even more tricky.

Now let’s look at the fold itself. The B Agile is easy to fold and so is the Viaro. Both of them are capable of being folded with one hand. But the Viaro allows you to push the button and pull the strap to fold all in the same spot. You don’t have to push a button on the side and then grab the middle strap like the B Agile.

The Britax B Agile folds up a bit smaller. I think that this mostly has to do with the fact that it doesn’t have the tray. The snack tray that acts as the Viaro’s car seat adapter sticks out really far when folded, thus needing a bit more room in the trunk. And if you take it off, you run the risk of losing it and not being able to use the stroller for a travel system.

The Viaro does have better storage. The lower basket is so much larger. Plus, you can access it from rear and from the front, which can be inconvenient with a taller child riding in the stroller, but it’s nice when the kids are small. The Viaro has the parent snack tray and the child snack tray included for no extra cost.

For the same price, you’d expect the same quality. But that’s not quite true with the Viaro and the B Agile. The Viaro has a few items that seem to be cheaper quality. The wheels are the biggest problem. The Viaro’s wheels are cheap- thin and easily bruised and bumped by any little rock in the road. And if you ride on gravel, you’ll shred your wheels in no time. The fabric and plastics also feel cheaper and thinner than those on the B Agile.

Chicco certainly has more bells and whistles on their stroller, like I mentioned above. They have much better storage and a slightly easier one handed fold. But the stroller feels a little cheaper and it doesn’t lock! Since the Britax car seat has more bells and whistles and is a bit nicer overall, and that’s probably more important, the Britax B Agile and B Safe 35 travel system is my winner for the best 3-wheeled travel system.

Folding Convenience

The Viaro has a great one-handed fold. This makes it simple for parents to quickly and efficiently collapse the stroller when it is time to head out.

Once you pull the release, conveniently tucked under the child seat, the stroller folds neatly in half. It then stays folded standing upright. This enables you to hold your child or car seat in one hand and break down the stroller with the other.

You can then use the same strap as a carrying handle. The lightweight frame makes taking it with you a breeze. If you want to place it in your trunk, it is easy to do so as well.

However, the stroller folds in half, and the back wheels are still quite bulky. Unfortunately, it is often noted in Chicco Viaro stroller reviews that these wide wheels can be a pain if you are tight on trunk space. Another nemesis to compact spaces includes the strollers snack tray, which protrudes out when the stroller is folded. Nevertheless, folding the stroller is really easy.

Unfolding your stroller is equally as easy, simply pull up on the handle. You only need one hand for either operation!

The Viaro Chicco infant stroller is three-wheeled . This makes it very agile and great to use as an everyday stroller. If you have to navigate busy city streets or crowded sidewalks you will love how nimble this stroller is.

The wheels are made of hard foam. They won’t crack like plastic and they don’t have to be filled like rubber tires, overall they are pretty sturdy. The front-wheel swivels for increased maneuverability and it also has suspension. This provides a smooth ride for your child over moderate terrain.

The wheels are of average size, this helps to keep the travel system light and compact. However, they aren’t oversized and the rear wheels don’t possess suspension. Therefore, this stroller isn’t great over very difficult terrains such as sand or rocks. It also doesn’t have shock suspension so it isn’t recommended to use it as a jogging stroller .

The rear wheels have toe-tap brakes. This is excellent for stopping your stroller to park without having to let go of the handlebar. On the whole, this stroller is perfect for everyday use on most terrains you will encounter while out and about.

Weight Range

The nice part about this travel system is that it can be used from birth through childhood. Its weight range extends from newborn up to toddlers of fifty pounds.

When your baby is small, you can click the car seat right onto the stroller. When your child is old enough to sit on their own and has good neck support, you can place them directly in the stroller.

Chicco lists the stroller minimum weight limit as 30 pounds, though parents may find that it accommodates their child before this weight. Once in the stroller, you can continue using it until your child weighs fifty pounds.

Storage Basket

The Chicco lightweight travel system has a surprisingly big storage basket for its sleek design. You can fit nearly everything you need into the basket, including bulky diaper bags.

Another great characteristic is that the basket is accessible from either the front or the back. This makes grabbing your necessities easy, even if you are packed on a tight bus or your stroller is backed up to a wall. When the stroller is folded, the basket nicely collapses keeping the form compact.

Car Seat Compatibility

The Viaro travel system comes with the Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant car seat, a highly praised car seat for its safety, and extended rear-facing weight limit.

This infant seat has a click-in attachment that enables you to quickly pop on and off the seat. Getting your child in and out of the car and onto the stroller is a cinch!

Aside from the KeyFit 30, the Viaro stroller will also accept all Chicco infant car seats that possess the secure click-in attachment, which is quite a selection.

Travel System Weight

The Viaro travel system is lightweight , that is one of the reasons why parents sometimes choose it over the Chicco Bravo. The Viaro stroller weighs 18 pounds. The car seat weighs 9.6 pounds without the base. Together they are just over 27 pounds, which isn’t considered heavy for a travel system.

The included car seat, the Chicco KeyFit 30, is safe. It certainly is no-frills but it keeps your child comfortable enough. It has wonderful features like a ReclineSure spring-assisted leveling foot, it also has RideRight bubble level indicators and other installation features that make achieving a secure install a breeze.

It uses easy to wipe clean fabrics, but they aren’t the softest. The seat does include plush support pillows that make it accommodating to children weighing 4 pounds and up to 30 pounds when the pillows are removed. This seat may not have a ton of comfort features, but it is very user-friendly and high rated for safety.

The Viaro stroller seat accommodates children from 30 pounds to 50 pounds. It has a multi-position backrest that allows kids to recline for a nap or sit up and view their surroundings. It has enough padding to keep kids cozy, without being too plush. The lower leg support, though not adjustable, is comfy.

The stroller seat also has a secure harness, a removable two-cup holder snack tray, and a deep canopy. Though neither the car seat nor the stroller seat has an excess of comfort features, they are plenty cozy enough for most children and are very safe.

Safety Harness

The Viaro stroller has an adjustable five-point safety harness. It includes padded harness covers so as not to irritate your child’s neck or shoulders. This harness will keep your child quite safe, but many older children prefer a three-point lap harness as they grow older.

The KeyFit 30 car seat also has a five-point harness. The one-pull tightener makes it easy to fit the harness to your child. There are six different harness slots to accommodate your growing child. However, you must manually adjust the height as this harness is not a no-rethread. All in all, both harnesses will keep your child securely positioned in their seat.

The canopy of the stroller is pretty deep, though it doesn’t have a flip-out visor for extra protection. When you use it with the car seat canopy, you can achieve full coverage.

One common complaint about the canopy is that there is no peek-a-boo window. This means when you are pushing the stroller you cannot check in on your child, you must walk around to the front to view them. This isn’t very convenient.

The handlebar of the Viaro stroller is not adjustable. It is at a decent level for parents of average height or those of shorter stature, but it may be uncomfortable for those who are taller .

The padded handle is comfortable to hold onto though. It also includes a parent tray with two cup holders, which is great!

#1 Britax B-Lively Travel System

First up is the Britax B-Lively Travel System . This system is very similar to the Viaro. They both have a three-wheel design, include a top-rated car seat with click-connect attachment, and are light and agile.

However, the Britax is more expensive than the Viaro. This is likely because the Britax car seat has a completely steel frame. Unfortunately, the Britax stroller is lacking in some areas. It doesn’t have a parent or child tray nor a front-access storage basket.

The Britax is ideal for parents who want an ultra-safe car seat. This travel system is also available at Walmart & PishPoshBaby .

The Graco car seat can be used by children up to 35 pounds compared to Chicco’s 30 pounds. Both strollers have a one-handed fast fold. Both systems strollers have a canopy, a reclining seat, a parent tray, and a child tray.

The Graco costs less than the Chicco though, and the Graco stroller basket is larger than the Viaro. The Graco is a better option for parents who want a more affordable travel system.

Finally, we have the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Travel System This is a luxury sporty design travel system. It has many of the same features as the Viaro, like a canopy, a lower storage basket, and lower leg support. However, it has rubber air tires, an adjustable handlebar, a handbrake, and the calf support is adjustable.

The Baby Jogger car seat includes an anti-rebound bar and rapid lock base belt-tightening technology. The Baby Jogger is more costly than the Viaro.

The Baby Jogger is ideal for parents who want luxury features included in their travel system. You can find this travel system on Walmart & PishPoshBaby too apart from Amazon.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
