Known worldwide for its stunning lavender fields and perched villages, Provence is so much more. Many of our tours start in Avignon, the perfect getaway to explore the area. If you can, we recommend taking one extra day to explore the city, with its many sites : Palais des Papes, the famous bridge and the Halles, Avignon’s market with its unique atmosphere. REASONS TO DISCOVER PROVENCE

«  Provence  is known for its sunny and relatively mild climate. However, July and August are usually quite hot, and humidity is often high in June and September. Rain is possible year-round—don’t forget to bring water-proof, breathable rain gear. The Mistral, Provence’s famously strong wind, can whip up at any moment, so come prepared with a windbreaker and warm layers. Please see “Suggested Packing List” in your Travel Book for more recommended clothing and gear. »

Culinary Specialities

«  Provence and the Côte d’Azur  have their own specialties, but also have a gastronomic tradition built on local products: vegetables, olive oil, herbs, etc … just like the country, a gay kitchen , sunny, colorful, feathers of scents and aromatics; it’s an enchantment for the palate. »

This beautifully preserved medieval city has many wonders waiting behind the fortified walls surrounding the city. One of the most impressive buildings in Europe, the  Palace of the Popes , played an influential role in Catholic history housing a number of popes. With its gothic style architecture and grand size this is one castle not soon forgotten. Just a quick cycle down the road is another famous Avignon sight: the  Pont d’Avignon . Only four arches of the original twenty-two remain of this spectacular bridge. Make sure you come and visit Avignon in July so you can take part in the  Festival d’Avignon , one of the major art festivals in France.

With ancient houses perfectly restored and numerous shops and restaurants throughout the village,  Gordes  is the most typical village in  Provence . Walk up the narrow cobbled stone streets to the top of the village to visit the church and castle. Gordes is also a strategic point from which to visit many historical and unique attractions from the Village des Bories at the top of the Vaucluse Mountains to Senanque’s Abbey which houses Cistercian Monks.

Mont Ventoux

The  climb of the Mount Ventoux  is widely known thanks to the famous  “Tour de France”  cycling race. It is a very challenging climb and advanced riders will be able to test their endurance cycling on this epic route! Hiking up the Mt Ventoux is just as challenging as cycling, but at the top of the « Giant of Provence », your efforts will be rewarded by views over cherry orchards and of the Alps to the northeast, not to mention the unique lunar atmosphere of Mont Ventoux’s summit. If you don’t feel up to the arduous climb, you can also just admire the white-capped summit from the Provencal countryside

The Roman ruins of Arles are a  UNESCO world heritage site , including a Roman amphitheater, a theatre, a necropolis and the Thermes (baths) of Constantine. But historical sites are not the only assets of « The soul of Provence ». With its beautiful ancient houses and narrow streets,  Arles , just like  St Remy de Provence , has always attracted artists and painters such as Vincent Van Gogh or Picasso.

Baux de Provence

Nestled in the Alpilles mountain range, les Baux provides the perfect view of Arles, Camargue, and the Provence countryside. One of the great monuments of Provence,  Chateau des Baux de Provence , is a ruined castle perched at the top of the town and dating back to the Middle Ages. Stopping in Baux on your cycle trip is a must. You will enjoy the magnificent view as well as the shops and ancient houses along the cobbled stone streets.

Provence is renowned for its  lavender fields . Provencal residents have been producing lavender since as early as the 16th century and although some of those narrow fields are still picked by hand, most people use machines now. Lavender flowers and leaf stalks are primarily used for perfume and soap, and it has many other secret remedies. The best time to cycle along the lavender fields of Provence and live a truly extraordinary experience is the last week of June through July when the fields are in blossom.

PROVENCE FOOD AND WINE

If you are a foodista, Provence is the place for you! It is bursting with local specialties. Among them, you might want to try:

  • Bouillabaisse – a highly seasoned fish stew with tomatoes, olive oil, and saffron
  • Soupe au Pistou – a thick vegetables soup with beans flavored with garlic and basilica
  • Daube de boeuf a la Provencale – beef stew with tomatoes and olives, cooked for 4 to 6 hours!
  • Tapenade  – a paste made of olives, lemon, capers, anchovies and olive oil
  • and of course, the famous  Herbs de Provence  (a mix of wild rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil and savory)

With over 2,500 years of experience, Provence knows a thing or two about wine! The appellations in Provence, more specifically the regions of Cotes de Provence  and  Bandol , are well known for their rose wines. But wine critics rant about Provence’s spicy, full-flavored red wines as well. Rose or red, while cycling around Provence make sure you take some time to do a  wine tasting  session. Aside from the wine, the most popular drink in Provence is the  Pastis : a local aperitif made from aniseed. Don’t be afraid to order in Provencal slang for a Pastagas!

PROVENCE GEOGRAPHY

The French region of Provence is located in the  southeast of France  between the Alps, the Côte d’Azur and the Rhone River. It comprises the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Var, and Bouches-du-Rhone and parts of the departments of Vaucluse and Alpes-Maritimes. There are different layers of Provencal life: the « Roman » towns of Orange, Nimes and Arles; the medieval bastions of Les Baux and Avignon; the essence of Provencal landscape in Luberon villages like Gordes ; and finally the great city life style of Aix-en- Provence.

PROVENCE HISTORY

The coast of Provence has some of the earliest sites of human habitation known in Europe. The Greeks and later on the Romans settled in the region of Provence which became important thanks to the trade routes that ran along the coast and up and down the Rhone River. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths and the Frankish kings, invaded Provence successively. During the 14th century, the Catholic Church moved its headquarter from Rome to Avignon and the region really flourished then. It became part of France in the year 1481. Up to the 14th century,  Provencal  was the literary language in France, and the North of Spain. Cycling around Provence, you will still hear some of the older people speaking Provencal, especially around a game of Petanque. Some expressions from to the Provencal dialect are mixed in with the official French language and people speak with a singing, unique, and irresistible accent.

Provence bike tours: our (impartial) pick of the best Provence cycling tours

Cycling in Provence, France is a feast for the senses. Following the region’s quiet roads, you’ll cycle through quaint French villages, passing vineyards, olive groves and cherry orchards along the way.

Famed by the Tour de France and with beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder that there are loads of bike tours in Provence to pick from. In this guide we’ll share some of our top picks.

This article is based on the information on each operator’s website. We’ve done our best to ensure our summary is accurate, but please double-check everything with the operator since the information on their website could be out of date or could have changed since we wrote the article. It’s even conceivable (heaven forbid!) that we may have made a mistake.

The prices usually assume two people occupying a room. If you want single occupancy, expect to pay more. Also carefully check the trip inclusions – we’ve just summarised the situation below and the inclusions may well vary for each trip.

In the interests of transparency, just to let you know that we’ve worked with  Vélorizons (also known as France Bike Trips) on creating other articles for this site. Want to know which other cycling tour operators we worked with in 2022? Read this.

The advantages of guided Provence bike tours

Whilst those experienced in road cycling in Europe might opt for DIY, self-guided cycling holidays in Provence, choosing a guided bike tour in Provence has its advantages.

As well as the social element to group bike tours, choosing an organised cycling tour gives you the reassurance that you’ll always have support should anything go wrong along the way.

If you decide to go down the guided bike tour route, it’s important to choose the best bike tour company for your needs.

Of course, cycling Provence self guided will be cheaper, so you need to weigh up costs when planning your Provence bike trip.

This article lists some of our top picks for the best cycling tour options in Provence.

If you’re still debating the guided v self-guided question, this article  may be useful for you.

Which area of Provence is best for you?

You’ll also want to consider what is the best base for cycling in Provence France.

Do you want a short trip focusing on climbing the mighty Mont Ventoux (relevant tours here ), or perhaps you want to explore the Luberon region (relevant tours here ) or head to the Cote D’Azur (relevant tours here )?

Alternatively, for Provence cycling holidays of a week or more, a point-to-point tour, staying at a different hotel each night, could be the best option (relevant tours here ).

Not sure about the differences between the regions, check out our Luberon/Ventoux guide, Ventoux accommodation guide and our Nice/Côte d’Azure guide!

Below we’ve got our pick of some of the most interesting tours out there, based on these regions. Enjoy!

Mont Ventoux bike tours

Mont Ventoux is one of the most famous mountains in Europe and a mecca for road cycling enthusiasts. Also known as the ‘Giant of Provence’, the 1912-metre limestone peak can be seen from most places in the region. Famed by the Tour de France, Mont Ventoux has featured in the event 14 times since 1951 (more on the Tour history here ).

The summit is a vertical mile high, with an average gradient of 7.5%, so it’s not for beginners – yet, if you’re fit enough, it offers one of the most satisfying climbs in France, if not the world – which is why a lot of Provence cycling tours are based around this climb.

You can find out more background information about cycling Ventoux in this guide.

--> A week in Provence!! " Bespoke cycling for all levels, exceptionally well maintained modern bikes and the opportunity to experience the countryside riding through lavender fields and vineyards. Neil and Nat offer a unique cycling holiday for everyone! Every aspect of this experience is a treat. For this return visit we chose to stay in the 17th Century Farmhouse so we had the luxury of the smorgasbord breakfast prepared by Neil, making new friends and sharing our daily experiences cycling the countryside . Two three course sensational dinners are included during the 6 night stay by Chef Neil. It’s also great to stay in the one place and cycle out to different hilltop villages each day. Over the years Neil and Nat have continued to evolve the cycling experience . Carefully mapped Garmin GPS routes (this is where you will really appreciate the experience) guiding you through vineyards, poppy and lavender fields set this cycling holiday apart from the rest. Daily briefings including “watch outs, best places to stop, where to explore and eat” where greatly appreciated. All supported by well detailed and mapped trip notes. All the planning and thinking is done for you. Even dinner recommendations and bookings are made for you. Having the swimming pool available for pre and post ride swims is fabulous! An extensive range of bikes are on offer to suit beginners through to very experienced cyclists which means this trip can be enjoyed by all members of the family. We chose e-bikes this trip so we could ride further and easily enjoy the countryside. If self-catering is more your style then their villa in a village nearby is a wonderful option. The bikes and daily cycle briefings still accompany this option. We had the opportunity of visiting the villa and the pool during this stay - it's gorgeous and we would definitely consider this option when we return. We have been travelling for 6 weeks in France and this holiday has been the highlight of our trip so far." Cycle Break in Provence, France. - Travelbuggill - Australia - June 23 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Unparalleled cycling experince in Provence. "Nat & Neil, our checkout day has arrived, and we are sad to go! What a lovely time we have enjoyed at your beautiful villa. Cycling in Provence was a long-delayed goal from the summer of 2020, but it was worth the wait! Thank you for accommodating us in every way! The detail & preparation you put into every part of our experience is unparalleled!! From suggesting daily rides based on predicted wind conditions, to reserving spots at some extraordinary local restaurants, you helped us to make every moment count. You have our higher recommendation, and we can't wait to return!." Villa Bike Tour in Provence, France. - The Cook Family - US - July 23 - 5* Guestbook review. --> Not To Be Missed! "If you are planning to visit this area, please consider seeing it with the help of Provence Cycling Holidays ! You will not find a more authentic travel experience than this! Great people, great conversation, wonderful food (& wine), excellent bikes, fantastic routes, charming villages, spot on suggestions. I could keep going but the best thing to do is experience it for yourself. Let hosts, Neil & Nat and their children show you how to enjoy the French countryside. Whether you are an experienced rider or just want to try something different, they will make it work for you! " Bike Trip in Provence, France. - Travel261149 - Can - June 22 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Excellent biking getaway! "We just returned from our second trip to Provence Cycling Holidays. Neil and Nat are fabulous hosts, the bike rides are gorgeous and beautifully laid out. We get to choose where we want to go each day and take off on our own with the amazing Garmin GPS directing us at every turn. The cards have info about where to eat and what to do in the villages we are passing through that day. If the weather is not great, Nat and Neil have lots of ideas for hiking or museums or more. And the breakfasts are amazing as well as the two family style dinners we shared with the family. This is a must do on the list of anyone that enjoys biking in Europe!." Cycle Break in Provence, France. - Jane - US - Oct 21 - 5* Tripadvisor review. --> A wonderful week cycling in Provence. "Our group had a fantastic time at Provence Cycling Holidays. We felt completely at home with Neil and his engaging family. He was patient with us as our plans evolved at the last minute during the pandemic. The bikes provided met our requests with some using the standard hybrids, some on road bikes and one on an ebike. The rides suggested to us from his library or custom plotted were appropriate to each of our desires, from longer, harder road rides to moderate hybrid tours through amazing scenery to some of the most beautiful villages in Provence. The food, recommendations and information provided were all terrific. If you want a cycling vacation in a beautiful part of the world where you feel at home and part of the family and where you are extremely well looked after, this is the place to go." Bike Tour in Provence, France. - Doreen - Can - Sept 21 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Great cycling holiday! "This B&B provides self-guided bike tours in the Provence area of France. This business provides pre-loaded routes on Garmin Edge bike computers. The owners take great care in helping guests select routes to maximize their enjoyment. Our group had both pedestrian and hardcore cyclists and everyone loved the cycling routes they chose and had a great time. We have very happy memories." Cycling Tours France, Provence - Lorna - UK - May 2019 - 5* Villa review. It fitted our needs to perfection. Highly recommended! "We are a family of 6 and stayed at the self-catering villa in Taillades. It was splendid. We loved the set up of the villa - the huge well-equipped kitchen, spacious living areas and comfortable rooms. It fitted our needs to perfection - we had privacy and all the support we needed from Nat & Neil. Our days were spent cycling on one of the many routes programmed on the GPS and Neil would point out the restaurants and highlight sights we should not miss. The bikes were in tip-top condition and it was so helpful that they provided helmets. Nat & Neil were helpful, engaging and wonderful hosts. Highly recommended!" Bike Vacation in Provence - Caroline - Singapore - June 2018 - 5* Villa Review. Super Provence Biking! A fabulous holiday and highly recommended! "We stayed at the Taillades Villa in June 2017 with a group of friends and had a brilliant time. The villa was beautifully furnished and equipped to a high standard. The Garmin route guides took us on quiet tracks and roads that we would never have found ourselves, and were a real bonus as there was no map reading required. Neil and Natalene were really helpful with advice on the rides, which restaurants to try and the best places to visit. All in all a fabulous holiday and highly recommended!" Cycling Vacation France, Provence - Julia H. - UK - July 2017. - 5* Villa Review. Exceeded our expectations in every way! "We're just home from a truly memorable way to experience Provence and our best (four so far) self-guided cycling tour . We honestly couldn't have asked for a better six days. We'd love to return and try out their new villa in Taillades." Bike Trip in Provence, France - Sue - US - June 2017 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor review.

The Chain Gang trips are top notch and huge fun. Over 10 years or more I have been on most of the Chain Gang’s trips in France - three of them more than once - and I can highly recommend them for the cycling, the routes, the guides and the cuisine. Some of my best ever holidays have been with the Chain Gang. The cycling can be challenging at times but is not prohibitively over strenuous for casual and leisure cyclists. As well as cycling through quiet and often deserted back roads of France, the days allow times for good lunches (often picnics), sightseeing, visits to vineyards and plenty of time to enjoy the local attractions. The hotels used en route are all comfortable and welcoming. Most of all, the Chain Gang guides are exceptional - excellent company, great mechanics and by the end of your week good friends as well. My personal favourite trips are the ones to Provence, the Dordogne and the Bordeaux Wine Trail. I can heartily recommend the Chain Gang trips to anyone or any age who enjoys getting out on their bike.

this tour company is out of Germany and we were the only english speaking guests. luckily the germans spoke some english and our guides spoke english as well but most casual conversations were in German. our guides were amazing and made us the most amazing picnics each day. 5 of our 7 nights were in very nice hotels but two of the nights we ended up in some 3 star tiny hotels. overall a great tour but americans beware that this company is newly trying to get americans to sign up and don’t really have the population to do so. you might be in groups that only the guides speak english and sometimes forget to give you the translation of instructions or information so you might have to ask.

Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon

My first bike and barge trip, it was a wonderful experience! Well planned. The crew was great, clearly working together well. Nice to see. Irene's dinners were as good as any following restaurant meals in Avignon and Paris. Yum! Sorry I didn't take pictures of her delicious dishes before eating them. Two criticisms - as another woman observed, there should have been two tour guides, with one riding sweep. That responsibility shouldn't be left to us. Also, the A/C in my cabin was way too cold. Overall, it was tremendous! Looking forward to the next one; hope so anyway! Thanks..

Bicycling the Best of Provence

This was my first bike tour and it was everything I could have hoped for. The guides made thing very easy with clear route markings and keeping my bike in perfect working order. The food and accommodations were excellent. The cultural extras were high quality and provided opportunities that I wouldn't have found independently. The French countryside was absolutely beautiful.

Provence bike tour reviews.

Overall amazing experience! Met some amazing people and enjoyed some beautiful views. While it was the hottest time of the year, our team had a great support system to ensure everyone was well hydrated. The bikes were nice and sturdy, especially climbing up some of those monstrous hills and the paniers were very handy! I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to enjoy the countryside and south of France!
Chain Gang Bike Guided Tour of Provence - My husband & I had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this tour or a different itinerary with "The Chain Gang Bike Tours". Mike & Bernie were our guides and both were very knowledgeable and engaging both made everyone comfortable and made sure our requests and needs were taken care of. This was our first bike tour and even though we were novice bikers we found the pace and the itinerary were ideal. The scenery and the various stops we made along they way were fun and allowed us to enjoy the country side and the wineries we visited were excellent as well.
I would like to start by saying we had a wonderful time and saw incredible scenery, architecture and ate amazing food. I want to share some feedback that may help you be more successful. First, this was NOT an English tour. It was a German tour where the guides did their best to manage the language issue. Many times, as the English speakers, we were out of the loop. This should have been made clear in advance. Communication overall in advance of the tour was very poor. We were not told that 3 great meals were provided each day. The picnics were AMAZING! But we should have been aware that while lunch was provided it was not included from a cost perspective. Either raise the price and include it or make it clear. All the hotels were excellent except the one in Arles. Really you should skip Arles and replace with Nimes. Arles is a tired town. More opportunity to explore the towns should be built in. ST. Remy in particular deserved some time. The mental hospital would have been of great interest but sadly, we missed it and spent that time at a local Roman site that was a lot less interesting. The Monastery should not be a tour. The ride there is awesome and if the lavender had been in blooming it’s an obvious draw, but the tour is pretty awful. The guides we’re amazing and so we’re our tour mates. They really tried to communicate with us especially after day 2 once we had all bonded but it was hard on them and us. If you want to expand in America I can give you some tips. I have at least 10 friends that want to do this just after following my Facebook feed for the week. Let us help you get a group together, have that group post about it and your American marketing will be off and running! Nikola in particular was a fabulous guide. He made a substantial effort to respond to guests needs- his picnics were incredible. His knowledge of history and interesting facts about everywhere we went really added to the trip. His excellent command of 3 languages was what really made it work. On that note, please include both guides in the dinner budget and add it to the cost of the trip. That seems an unnecessary savings and especially with the language issue it was necessary to have them there at dinner. They picked great restaurants! The multi course dinners every night is a real selling point- you should highlight this in your marketing and communications. Please respond to customer questions in advance in a timely fashion. It’s easy and would have made for a better match between expectation and reality and please provide a suggested packing list. If you like I will send you my suggestions. Provence is stunning. The spring was a great time to go. Weather was perfect and although we didn’t see blooming lavender we saw poppies, iris, wisteria, lilacs and so much more! This was a trio of a lifetime, truly! The e-bikes were a blast! The only way to do it. The equipment was excellent and made it so enjoyable. You really experience the countryside in this way.

For this Provence guided bike adventure, you have to be reasonably fit. This tour is suitable for cyclists who regularly ride at weekends and have no problem staying on their bike for several hours at a time. You should be comfortable with an occasional challenging climb and have good control of your bike, feeling confident in your skills to ascend and descend safely. The region’s diverse terrain, characterized by both flat expanses and undulating hills , demands a certain level of stamina and strength.

Your cycling experience should be sufficient for you to be able to cross between 15 and 50 miles (25-80 km) 6 days in a row, with daily elevation gains between 1,300 and 3,940 feet (400-1,200 m). Keep in mind that the riding is customizable , which means that your group will be able to choose either an easier or a more demanding route on any day, potentially with an option to split the group depending on preferences. This means that, for example, instead of riding 46 miles (75 km) with an elevation gain of 3,900 feet (1,200 m), you can opt for a 35-mile (56 km) route with an elevation gain of 1,640 feet (500 m). If you’re still worried about the distances and climbs, a good option may be renting an e-bike , which will make your rides significantly less strenuous. Road bike and e-bike rentals are available for an added fee of $355 and $380, respectively.

Keep in mind that you will regularly take breaks. Your guide will always be by your side, monitor your technique, push you to give your maximum, and change the route if it gets too strenuous for your group.

To prepare for the guided Provence bike tour, start with a fitness assessment to gauge your current cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength. Given Provence’s diverse terrain, it’s essential to build robust fitness levels. Incorporate consistent training sessions into your routine, focusing on strengthening your leg muscles and enhancing overall cardiovascular endurance. This targeted preparation is crucial for navigating the characteristic climbs and descents that define Provence’s cycling landscape. Additionally, gradually increase your mileage in training to acclimate your body to longer distances, ensuring that you can fully savor the picturesque landscapes without succumbing to excessive fatigue during the tour.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Road bike or an e-bike — can be rented (road bike and e-bike rentals are available for an added fee of $355 and $380, respectively)
  • Helmet — can be provided by the guide upon request
  • Comfortable riding clothing (make sure its made of moisture-wicking or synthetic material)
  • Sneakers or sport shoes for riding (multipurpose bike and hike shoes are recommended)
  • Breathable outside layer or jacket
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Sweater or fleece
  • Water bottles or hydration bladder
  • Daypack large enough for everything you might need in a day
  • Biking gloves are optional but recommended
  • Casual clothes to wear when you’re not cycling
  • Comfortable walking shoes to wear when you’re not cycling
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, hand sanitizer, bug spray, etc.)

You’ll receive a more detailed packing list upon booking. Pack clothing suitable for different weather conditions. Opt for breathable fabrics and ensure you have sun protection to enhance your comfort during the ride. Ensure to adjust this list based on the season and the duration of your stay.

Bikes are not included in the price of the guided Provence bike trip, but can be rented during booking for an added fee of $355 for a regular road bike and $380 for an e-bike. Choosing between a regular road bike and an e-bike depends on your preferences and fitness level .

If you enjoy a traditional road cycling experience, value agility, and seek a physical challenge, go for the regular road bike. It’s ideal for those in good physical condition accustomed to longer rides and hilly terrain. On the other hand, if you prefer extra assistance, especially on climbs, or want to enjoy the journey without intense physical effort, an e-bike is a wise choice. It’s suitable for cyclists of all levels, providing electric assistance to ease climbs and extend your range. The e-bike is accessible to a wide range of people, including those with concerns about distance or elevation. Keep in mind the additional weight and the need for regular battery recharging. Ultimately, choose the option that aligns with your cycling goals and desired experience.

To get to Avignon, the starting point of the adventure, most people fly either into Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport or into Marseille Provence Airport . Once you’re in either of the two cities, we recommend taking a high-speed TGV train to Avignon. The journey will take you approximately 3 hours from Paris or 50 minutes from Marseille. You will meet fellow cyclists and guides on Day 1 by 11am, at your hotel.

For an optimal start to your Provence guided cycling adventure, many guests choose to stay the night before in Paris, Marseille, or Avignon. To streamline your journey, your guides offer transfers from the Avignon TGV train station or the center of Avignon on the morning of the trip’s commencement, with pickups typically scheduled around 10am. That way, you can board a morning train from Paris or Marseille on Day 1 and easily get to the pickup point in time.

In Provence, a lot of cooking is done with garlic, tomatoes and olive oil; due to the location, Mediterranean cuisine has a great influence. Popular dishes are the fish soup bouillabaisse, ratatouille or lavender jam as a spread.

The ideal time for our cycling tours in Provence is from  mid-March to October . If you want to experience the unique lavender blossom, a tour between mid-June and early July is recommended.

As in the rest of France, cooking, eating and enjoying food is important in Provence. Due to its geographical location, the cuisine of Provence is influenced by the Mediterranean diet. The most important ingredients in Provencal cuisine include garlic, tomatoes and olive oil. Dishes such as the world-famous fish soup, the Marseille Bouillabaisse, ratatouille or lavender marmalade have made Provencal cuisine world-famous. Look forward to heavenly delicacies that delight the palate and soul.

The lavender blossom

The sweet scent of lavender hangs almost continuously in your nostrils from June to August, when you cycle through the blossoming lavender fields. Because there is a boom in Provence. But what you see and smell here on the endless lavender fields is mostly not lavender, but lavandin, a subspecies of lavender. True lavender is less productive than lavandin. It begins to flower after four years and grows mainly in the mountains. The precious lavender oil is not only used in cosmetics, but also in naturopathy and in the kitchen. In addition, the sweet fragrance is an insect repellent and is therefore very often dried and hung in the wardrobe to keep moths away. But even those who don’t much like the smell of lavender, will be impressed by the sight of the beautiful fields.

  • …that Marseille is the sunniest city in France with more than 2800 hours of sunshine per year?
  • …that Provence is also called the land of light?
  • …that the famous painter Cèyanne found his muse in Provence and painted the same mountain over 200 times, the Montagne Ste Victoire?

DAY 1. Arrival in Avignon

Impressive, that is Provence’s Avignon. If you grew up hearing the child’s song “A Sur le pont d’Avignon” (On the Avignon bridge) well, this is that place. Seat of the Popes for 400 years, it has imprinted this stately town with some important monuments and it is a great place to prepare for your Southern French bike trip. Take in the Cathedral, Notre-Dame de Doms D’Avignon and the Palais des Papes (Pope`s Palace) and wander into the very cool soaring interior. Often the site of some excellent art exhibits, the view from its ramparts is wonderful. And of course, if you are still humming the song, take a ramble down to the river and visit the bridge. You will receive all bike tour information upon check-in at the hotel. Please, ask for it at reception.

DAY 2. Bedoin or Mazan (loop ride)

RIDE: 67 km | Ascent: 560 m Or: 78 km | Ascent: 920 m Start your cycling adventure in Provence by being transferred to Bédoin, and receive your bike there. There is an option, if you like a more difficult ride, to cycle a loop around the wild landscape of the Dentelles de Montmirail , It is a challenging loop of rocky mountain terrain, reminiscent of the backbone of some primeval giant! What a delicious day, you have today. Pedal through the most famous wine-producing villages of La Provence . The first being Beaumes-de-Venise , an ancient village where one of the most famous wines worldwide is produced, the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise. . Some others cycled through today will also be lovely Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Séguret , which hugs a hillside and has the impressive moniker of being one of the prettiest villages in France with its enchanting cobbled streets and spilling flowerpots. You will also pass by Vaison-la-Romaine . This town indeed has a rich Roman heritage represented by the impressive remains of Villasse and Puymin. Covering 15 hectares, they are evidence of the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Vasio, forming France’s biggest archaeological site! Continue your day on to the optional ride to sweet little hillside clinging Suzette (1,080 m), and add 20 km to the day’s ride and a few meters up! You will also have the option to ride 10 km more from Bédoin to Mazan to finish this good day’s ride.

DAY 3. Mazan to Sault via Mont Ventoux or via the Gorges de la Nesque

RIDE: 41 km | Ascent: 920mOr: 61 km | Ascent:: 1930 m Very exciting day on the bike today. This is France’s epic cycling climb, that all road cyclists will love. If you are keen to take on a mountain, give the cycle up the Giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux a go! It is one of the most famous climbs in Europe and has been part of the worldwide known Tour de France 15 times now. Scene of many a TdF battle, it is impressive at 1909m high and you can see its windswept recognizable summit for miles around in Provence, its stark white communications tower, always illusive and higher up then you would wish as you cycle up to it! The sobering memorial to TdF rider, Tom Simpson, who died there, is worth a stop on the way just to remind yourself, at what a dramatic stage Mont Ventoux is. However, once at the top, what a view and a gorgeous descent through the fir tree forests that crowd its base. Chapeau! Or, if you wish another beautiful option, cycle through the Gorges de la Nesque , a very picturesque winding road through rocky tunnels and beautiful viewpoints. The gorges, home to wildlife such as boar, deer and many types of raptors is a very alluring bike ride to experience and you will enjoy this surprisingly quite wild landscape carved millions of years ago by the raging river below. Your home for tonight is Sault , a very little town atop a bump in the landscape, and just 26km away from the top of Mont Ventoux. Surrounded by fields of purple lavender, it seems its cobbled streets, are lusciously aromatic.

DAY 4. Sault to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

RIDE: 60 km | Ascent: 610 m A rolling day through this most traditional of Provence’s villages, awash with clear sunlight, scented vineyards, lush orchards and green gardens. Who wants to go back to reality when this too could be yours! Dreams abound here in Provence of this bucolic life and especially on this trip. Enjoy this very entrancing cycle ride highlighting some of the best of Southern France’s allure. Arrive in ancient Venasque , one of France’s most “beautiful villages” and oldest, this striking white stone village hugs a hillside, located in the Monts de Vaucluse region and is a nice stop for a snack. Continue cycling to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse , a charming town set in a steep valley. It’s an emblematic spot in Provence. Cycle along the River Sorgue, which has one of the highest flow rates in the world. Its lovely old town with its 11th-century Romanesque church and a medieval castle perched on a rocky peak whose ruins overlook the village is a delight. As is the paper mill which still produces paper and has done, since the 15th century!

DAY 5. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Gargas

RIDE: 38 km | Ascent: 720 mOr: 53 km | Ascent:: 1,020 m A great day of cycling today with a first stop in the gorgeous village of Gordes . If you haven’t decided yet to sell up and spend the rest of your days here, you might now! It is located just at the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park , and is a picture postcard village full of charm. It’s a very striking spot, where in the warm summers, the close-set stone homes provide shadowy shade in the quaint cobbled stone narrow alleyways. Enjoy amazing views from its iconic 11th century castle set high above the spreading patchwork quilt of lavender and green fields. Another place that shouldn’t be missed on the way is Sénanque Abbey , really a must-see monument. Cistercian monks still live there, and follow St. Benedict’s belief, that “Idleness is the enemy of the soul” and so are busy with their apiary, lavender fields, etc and sell their essential oils, olive oil and honey to passers-by in order to help in the upkeep of the Abbey. You will now note, the change in the soil colour to shades of a deep reddish orange to pink, which is pleasingly photogenic and is evident through places like Menerbes, Lacoste and Bonnieux. Arrive in Roussillon , set atop the countryside, with homes, colourfully pastel with their shutters and scenic streets. A lovely spot to sit in the main square and have a drink and watch the world go by. Cycle next to your magnificent hotel in Gargas where you can enjoy your last moments of tranquillity in this wonderful cycling country!

DAY 6. Onwards travels from Avignon

Awake to birdsong in this pretty spot before your transfer to Avignon to finish this trip and to make your onward journey to other parts of La Belle France. Merci and à bientôt!

Daily program

  • 6-night itinerary
  • 7-night itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Avignon Welcome to Avignon! There will be a welcome meeting either today or tomorrow where you'll receive detailed information on your tour and a personalized bike fitting.

The history of Avignon predates the Romans, but it was Catholicism that put it on the map. In 1309, an elected French pope transformed vast areas of Avignon into public squares, constructed an enormous papal palace, and completed three miles of protective walls complete with impressive towers. If you arrive early enough today, be sure to visit the hilltop park to enjoy the best views of the city. You might also like to tour the immense papal palace, stroll through the trendy traffic-free shopping district, and soak up the atmosphere in the charming, shady squares.

Day 2: Avignon - Chateauneuf du Pape - St. Laurent des Arbres - Avignon (42 mi/68km, elevation gain/loss 310m) Heading north out of Avignon, catch your first glimpse of the glorious Provence countryside, replete with verdant orchands and gorgeous farmhouses. You'll soon arrive in the famous Côtes-du-Rhone wine-making village of Châteuneuf du Pape where you can enjoy a wine tasting (not included in tour price). Loop back through the captivating countryside for your second evening in Avignon.

Day 3: Avignon to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue , optional loop to Venasque (12 or 25 mi/20 or 40km, elevation gain/loss 110m or 650m) Leaving the city, you'll reach Jonquerettes after a gentle uphill. Heading back down into the valley, arrive in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, an 'island city' that's really a compact medieval town, well known for its intiguing art galleries and antique shops. It's a truly lovely place to stroll around and explore, perhaps enjoying lunch on the grass by the charming quay.

For those wanting to pedal further, you can continue cycling to reach Pernes-les-Fontaines. As the name suggests, this wonderful village is home to over 40 ancient fountains! You'll then ride on small country roads to Venasque, one of France's most beautiful medieval towns perched on a steep cliff. Its 12th-century church and three Saracen towers offer a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Ride back to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, your home for the next two nights.

Day 4: Isle sur la Sorgue - Gordes - Roussillon - Isle sur la Sorgue (38 mi/61km, elevation gain/loss 575m) Today you're in for a real treat! You'll cycle from one gorgeous settlement to the next, with two of these medieval towns considered amongst the most beautiful in France: Gordes and Roussillon. They're a wonderful reward after the effort of the uphill climbs.

Choose from two different options to top off your day. The easier option brings you back to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue on a dedicated bike path, a former railway line converted into a quality bike lane. The more difficult option takes you to more hilltop villages like Lacoste and Oppède le Vieux before returning you to Isle.

Day 5: Isle sur la Sorgue - Eygalières - St. Rémy de Provence (23 mi/37km, elevation gain/loss 200m) Scenic roads lined with pear and apple orchards accompany you as you head toward Cavaillon. You may experience a bit of traffic, but shortly after crossing the Durance River, the deserted country roads return and you'll again pass through tiny villages until you reach Eygalières. Eygalières has preserved its authentic charm with beautiful stone houses, almost always framed with a touch of green or sweet-smelling flowers. Continuing on a somewhat rocky path, right below the impressive limestone ridge of the Alpilles, you have a chance to stop at a family-run wine estate for a tasting (not included). Today's destination is St. Rémy.

Day 6: St. Rémy - Fontvieille - Les Baux-de-Provence - St Rémy (26 mi/42km, elevation gain/loss 400m) Today you can relax and enjoy the lovely town of St. Rémy. Alternatively, challenge yourself with a ride to Les Baux-de-Provence!

If staying in St. Rémy, you'll find an abundance of chic restaurants, private Renaissance mansions, beautifully restored homes, and charming chapels and convents to feast your eyes on. One of St. Rémy's claims to fame is the fact that Van Gogh spent the last year of his life committed in the psychiatric institution at the Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole.

For those riding to Les Baux-de-Provence, you're in for an exciting day of riding along the winding streets of the Alpilles mountains. Pine tree landscapes and fields of wildflowers accompany you as you reach Les Baux-de-Provence. This town has an incredibly beautiful citadel that towers over the surrounding countryside, as well as quaint chapels, a museum, and plenty of history. Here, you'll have the chance to sample a few of the high quality red and rosé wines that this area is known for, before returning to St. Remy.

Day 7: Return to Avignon The tour ends after breakfast when you'll be taken back to Avignon.

Don't want the adventure to end? Consider the optional extension to Arles or even a cycling day tour in Provence or Luberon .

Day 7: St. Rémy - Les Baux-de-Provence - Maussane - Arles (31 mi/50 km, elevation gain/loss +250m/-300m) Today you'll pedal in the gorgeous Alpilles Mountains, first passing the incredible Romanesque Chapel of St. Gabriel, which dates back to the 12th century. Soon, you'll begin the climb to Les Beaux, a 4 km uphill stretch to reach this lovely clifftop village. The spectacular view and exhilarating downhill make the climb well worth the effort! You'll head back towards the plains, passing the ruins of a 2000-year-old aqueduct before reaching Arles and its Roman coliseum.

Day 8: Return to Avignon The tour ends after breakfast when you'll be taken back to Avignon.

Surface and terrain

This bike tour features moderate but steady climbs. Ideally, participants should be in good physical condition and prepared to cycle an average of 30 miles per day. Electric bikes are available.

This was a great trip with well organized logistics and routes. We downloaded a GPX file reader and found the daily routes were easy to follow. The files need to be updated for day 4 and day 6 as routes had a couple of deadends but we managed. Overall all a great trip, not too difficult!

France is perfect for cycling. And we follow all the instruction in the paper and arrive well everywhere. There were like 3 or 4 instructions in the whole book that weren't good but in general it was very well indicated. Organization was great and philip was also perfect as loos 3 tired in two days, every morning before the start he came with new tires to replace the old ones. Thanks!

Cycling holidays in Provence

'When God created the sun, the earth, the mountains and seas, and put them into place, he realized that a little of each element remained. So he gathered the bits together to make a paradise and Provence was born' A nice and nearly true story, isn't it?  On this bike tour you discover Provence and the Camargue - a land of light, colors and scents. Hence, many well-known painters have lived in Provence: Picasso, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse, Cézanne, and Chagall to name just a few. The Mediterranean climate is pleasant; the sun shines more than 3000 hours a year. People live outside, even during the short, crisp, and windy winter, and play "Pétanque" and drink their "Pastis". A place of true inspiration that lead to a series of amusing books by Peter Mayle!

GORDES, "THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF FRANCE" LOOP 45km 481m Leasure: You occasionally or regularly ride your bike and have experience in cycling for a whole day. You enjoy discovering new territories in a leisurely way. You can ride up to 35 to 55 km a day on relatively flat routes. ">

Two villages classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France are placed along your loop today. The day begins calmly. You must first descend the hill on which stands the village of Gordes. Then you reach Roussillon, a charming village built on top of an ocher cliff. It offers a perfect harmony of colors with its stones, roofs, and facades saturated in the same red tones as the surrounding landscapes. A short walk on the ocher trail is definitely worth the detour. You then pass through the foothills of the Luberon mountains to reach the second unmissable village of your day, Ménerbes. Among its assets, a breathtaking view of the Luberon and the Monts de Vaucluse, but also proud alleys lined with 18th century mansions and old houses. Also, we now come to visit its unusual Corkscrew Museum or taste the wines of Côtes du Luberon in the sumptuous Truffle and Wine House.

From GORDES to LES BAUX DE PROVENCE 60km 423m Fit: You regularly ride and/or practice a sport. You are accustomed to traveling by bike or wish to try it out. Your physical condition allows you to cover a minimum of 45 to 70 km per day with a little bit of steep routes. ">

You cross part of the Luberon Regional Natural Park to reach Cavaillon. This city with a remarkable historical heritage is perched on a green hill. Greek and then Roman, Cavaillon has preserved the traces of its past. You continue your journey and arrive at Eygalière, in the heart of the Alpilles Massif. Surrounded by olive trees, green valleys and vineyards, this village offers extraordinary landscapes. You then reach Saint-Rémy de Provence, whose unique light has inspired many artists, writers and painters such as Vincent Van Gogh. You end your day by climbing the hill which will take you to the village of Les Baux de Provence. Take a few moments to visit this city of character and enjoy exceptional landscapes of Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles.

From LES BAUX DE PROVENCE to AVIGNON 59km 291m Leasure: You occasionally or regularly ride your bike and have experience in cycling for a whole day. You enjoy discovering new territories in a leisurely way. You can ride up to 35 to 55 km a day on relatively flat routes. ">

Today head north to reach Avignon, city of Popes. On your way, you cross the Barbentane forest and the Montagnette massif from where stands the Abbey of St Michel de Frigolet. This Abbey takes its name from the word thyme, “ferigoule” in Provençal, which grows everywhere on the hills. You can’t talk about Frigolet Abbey without talking about “reverend Père Gaucher’s elixir” or the beautiful golden-green Frigolet liqueur made with Montagnette herbs. Your route will then go over the Rhône before reaching Avignon. You will fall under the spell of its old streets, its restored medieval ramparts and its immense Palais des Papes.

End of your cycling trip after breakfast. Have a safe journey home!

About this tour.

A wonderful boat & bike tour through the wild Camargue nature with its bulls and horses: from the medieval fortress of Aigues Mortes you’ll cycle gradually towards Arles. After that you’ll visit the most typical Provence landscape, including the Rhone Valley, Van Gogh’s Provence and the Roman Pont du Gard.

Easy cycling in mostly flat areas, with only few short climbs and descents. Little effort required, suitable for most people.

In this tour you have the possibility to explore by bike the southern part of France. Historically, Provence was important to the Celts, Greeks and Romans, which added to the layers of Provencal life, while in more modern times the Provence landscape inspired artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne. You will cycle along quiet roads with breathtaking scenery and discover many delightful hilltop villages, among vineyards and orchards. Then you will enter the Camargue region, a dramatic river delta, home to flamingos, wild horses and countless bird species. You will find it difficult not to fall in love with these landscapes!

The ship – Your sailing hotel In between cycling excursions, you cruise along with the ship, which travels to a new destination every day. You dine, sleep and eat breakfast on board and you can prepare a packed lunch every day. It’s also possible to spend a day on board if you like. There are rental bikes/E-bikes on board.

Day 8: Disembarkation: Aigues Mortes

After breakfast: disembarkation and end of the tour.

Tour program variations: The program has been planned to feature navigation along the Rhone River and Rhone-Sète Canal. Due to organizational reasons, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday. Issues with high and low water, as well as logistic obstacles such as officially ordered – previously not announced – repair work on locks or bridges can modify some of the daily stretches or overnight stays and may even request a transfer by bus. These decisions are only taken by the barge’s captain.

Route profile Total length: 250 km Terrain: 90% tarmac, 10% unpaved The tour is totally in the lowlands during the two stages in Camargue, while the stages north of Arles present some ups and downs, which are however easy to overcome. There is just one more demanding slope towards Les Baux de Provence, but you will be fully repaid with an extraordinary landscape. The itinerary is mostly on secondary roads with low traffic; some short stretches on more busy roads are however inevitable. There will also be a couple of navigation stretches to make the stage more enjoyable.

Activity level: Leisure cycling in mostly flat areas, with only a few short ups and downs. Little effort required, suitable for everyone.

A wonderful way to see Provence

John whiting.

We traveled as a couple on this tour. The fact that we knew no one was not an issue as the tour guide and crew made it a very welcoming and inclusive experience. Our tour guide was an amazing person. She was a lot of fun. She had researched her area and was extremely knowledgeable. She made everything engaging and her instructions were always clear. She was Italian and her French and English was great, so her skills as an interpreter were excellent. The boat staff were always helpful and friendly. The food was plentiful and of a good quality. When feedback was given about the need for salad it was taken on board immediately. The bikes were well maintained and great to ride. Equipment generally was very well organised. Our cabin was a double, which was tight but… it’s a boat. The living area upstairs was lovely so that compensated more than adequately. The itinerary was an excellent one. Our trip was from Avignon to Agues Morte. It seems this is the best option, it certainly worked well for us. I would thoroughly recommend this company to others.

Hi John, Thank you for your wonderful feedback on our tour! We're delighted to hear you felt welcomed and included. Our guide's knowledge and language skills, along with the friendly boat staff and delicious food, made for a memorable experience. We appreciate your observation about the salad, and we're glad our prompt response met your expectations. It's fantastic that you enjoyed the well-maintained bikes, organized equipment, and the lovely upper deck. While we understand the cabin size may have been tight, we're pleased that the spacious living area compensated adequately. We're grateful for your recommendation and hope to welcome you back on board in the future. Warm regards, Romy

A great week

Nathan cohen.

My wife and I had a wonderful week. Hugo the guide was exceptional. He had tremendous knowledge of the area weaving through small towns and vineyards. Added to this was his grasp of the historic background of the towns, castles, roman ruins, other sites we visited coupled with his knowledge of the historical figures. The food on the boat met all of our expectations, it was simply very good. This was a winner. (One additional note. There are a few relative short steep climbs on multiple days. The literature should encourage casual riders to consider an e bike to make these climbs easier.)

Thank you for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear you had a wonderful week with our exceptional guide, Hugo. We're glad you enjoyed the food and appreciate your suggestion about e-bikes for steep climbs. We look forward to hosting you again on a Boat Bike Tours adventure!

great experience overall

Our guide Weiger was great! Very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing. Chef Nadia fed us so well!

Thank you for sharing your positive experience! We're thrilled that you had a great time with our Crew. We look forward to welcoming you again! Best Regards, Boat Bike Tours

In the pleasant air conditioned lounge you have a wonderful view. This is especially nice whilst enjoying your breakfast and dinner in the restaurant, or when you relish a cool drink in the salon. Each of the 11 cozy cabins have a private bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink.

Bienvenue à La Maison Papillons

Your guides will meet you in Avignon for a transfer to Monteil, the town where our host and fellow guide Olivier operates La Maison Papillons. Surrounded by Provence’s verdant hills, this once-abandoned farmhouse was given a new life by Olivier and his wife Caroline. Together, they transformed the property into a rustic and intimate guesthouse of stone and rough hewn wood, with terraces, gardens, and a pool for enjoying the Provençal sun. After a bike fitting and a safety briefing, begin riding through the undulating countryside punctuated by villages dating as far back as the 12th century. We’ll reach Maison de Garniac, a family-run farm where we’ll indulge in a truffle lunch and our friend Yolaine shares her passion and knowledge over truffle ice cream. After, stop at an award-winning olive mill before spinning back to La Maison Papillons. Tonight, we head to a 300-year-old stone house surrounded by forest where we connect over a family-style dinner—complete with our favorite Gigondas and Vacqueyras wines from the Côtes du Rhône.

Meals: Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Issirac, Malataverne, Orgnac l’Aven, Le Monteil Accomplished:  18 miles / 29 km, elevation gain: 461 meters / 1,512 feet Accommodations: La Maison Papillons

The Cèze Valley, Climbs, and Cooking Class

For those who wish to start today with a bang, begin with an early climb up Mont Bouquet, the area’s answer to Mont Ventoux. At only 629 meters high, what Bouquet lacks in elevation it more than makes up for in grade—averaging 9.2% for nearly five kilometers. If you prefer, take a more leisurely route and pedal peacefully through farmlands, vineyards, lavender fields, and forests. We’ll reach Lussan, recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France: admire its medieval ramparts, narrow lanes lined with fanciful homes, and three mills—a testament to the town’s silk-making past. Pop into the 15th-century château to catch a panoramic glimpse of the Cévennes mountains, followed by lunch at our friends Dominique and Francoise’s restaurant in Verfeuil. After, prepare for a tasting at Domaine de Gressac, an estate that has been presciently producing organic wines since 1970. Head back to Olivier’s farmhouse via the Cèze Valley, and roll up your sleeves for a vegetarian cooking class with Sammy, a local chef and cookbook author. You’ll also have the change to visit Olivier’s onsite studio, where the former book and magazine illustrator is often found painting contemporary landscapes.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Méjannes-les-Clap, Lussan, Verfeuil, Goudargues, Monteil Accomplished:   36 miles / 58 km, elevation gain: 753 meters / 2,470 feet Longer Option: 53 miles / 86 km, elevation gain: 1,227 meters /4,025 feet Accommodations: La Maison Papillons

Cliffs, Canyons, and Cave Paintings

Today’s multi-sport adventure begins with a short ride to the starting point of our hike: the famous Ardèche Gorges Nature Reserve. Known as the “Grand Canyon of Europe,” the gorge is one of the greatest natural wonders in all of France. Our three-hour hike will reveal awe-inspiring views of the towering limestone cliffs, ultimately ending on a pristine beach of the Ardèche river (where the brave among us might venture a quick dip). On the return, enjoy the shade of oak trees and look up for Bonelli’s eagles as we loop back up the gorge. After a well-earned lunch, transfer to the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave, a 36,000-year-old dwelling where frescoes and prehistoric drawings will entice your imagination. After, transfer to the hotel or ride the rest of the way back. Spend the afternoon sprawled by the pool or mastering the Provençal art of the nap. Tonight, we’re treated to a wine tasting and dinner in the nearby town of Barjac.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Labastide-de-Virac, Gorges de l’Ardèche, Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, Monteil Accomplished: 8 miles / 13 km, elevation gain: 223 meters / 732 feet; 5 miles / 8 km hiking Longer option: 16 miles/ 26 km, elevation gain: 350 meters/ 1,148 feet Accommodations: La Maison Papillons

The Mayor, the Chef, and the Shepherd

Have you ever wondered what the duties of a village mayor in rural France might entail? Today, we meet Monsieur Benoit, the mayor of Monclus, and have the chance to ask as he joins us for a ride. Our first stop is Goudargues, a vibrant village known for its tree-lined canal. Stroll by cafés and through the weekly market where we’ll meet up with Jacob, our private chef for tonight. Join him in selecting the ripest, most aromatic ingredients for our dinner, then get back on the bike and ride to the postcard-perfect medieval village of La Roque-sur-Cèze. We’ll glimpse the Sautadet Falls, where the Cèze River tumbles over the naturally carved limestone in a spectacular series waterfalls and crevasses, and giant potholes. Lunch is a simple Provençal picnic in the setting of a 12th-century castle. For our last stop of the day, we’ll climb into the Valbonne forest to Lucie’s goat cheese farm in Issirac. After a hearty tasting, complete the loop back to La Maison Papillons and get ready to see how Jacob has transformed this afternoon’s market produce.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Goudargues, La Roque-sur-Cèze, Saint-Christol-de-Rodières, Issirac, Monteil Accomplished: 35 miles / 56 km, elevation gain: 780 meters / 2,559 feet Accommodations: La Maison Papillons

Bon Vin, Beaulieu, et Benoît

Our last full day of riding takes us through the Ardèche and foothills of the Cévennes mountains. For your efforts in conquering the steep climbs, you’ll be rewarded with an exclusive visit to Olivier’s favorite winery, Château de la Selve. Originally a 13th-century fortress, the château became the hunting lodge of a wealthy family before its transformation into a prestigious domaine . The tasting of their organic wines is playful: sip from an opaque glass to determine if you’re drinking white or red; guess the cépage (variety) and millésime (vintage); see if you can determine whether wine is barrel- or amphora-aged. In the end, everyone wins with a wine-paired picnic on the estate grounds. Spin home through Mediterranean brushlands known as garrigues , passing through the villages of Beaulieu, Saint-Sauveur-de-Cruzières, and Barjac. Tonight, we meet a young chef who runs a restaurant on his family’s farm, serving only seasonal products from Provence. For our final dinner, it’s a truly unforgettable gastronomic experience complemented by an impressive wine list.

Meals: Breakfast/ Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Grospierres, Beaulieu, Barjac Accomplished:   35 miles / 62 km, elevation gain: 911 meters / 2,989 feet Shorter Option: 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 472 meters / 1,548 feet Accommodations: La Maison Papillons

Before the journey home, take a morning stroll or devote some extra time to savoring Olivier’s beautiful breakfast at La Maison Papillons. Your guides transfer you to the Avignon train station and bid you à bientôt!
