Excellent trip.

Had an excellent trip to the St. John's reef. Boat was fantastic, only surpassed by the great crew and dive guide. Dives were amazing and the food made the surface times also very relaxing.

Liveaboard Diving in Red Sea

What to expect on a red sea liveaboard.

Liveaboards in the Red Sea have long been a divers favorite destination offering amazing scuba diving with healthy, colorful reefs and abundant marine life. Egyptian liveaboards have provided divers from around the world with some amazing dive experiences on some of the world's best-known dive sites. Numerous liveaboard itineraries are available, which can visit remote reefs or wrecks from WWII.

The name 'Red Sea' is rumored to come from the seasonal blooms of red-colored algae that appear near the surface at certain times of the year. But despite its name, the waters are an amazing blue water destination boasting comfortable water temperatures throughout the year, superb visibility, and great dive conditions year-round. As some of the best dive sites are far from shore, a liveaboard dive cruise is the best way to visit the more remote areas of this region.

The Red Sea is a seawater inlet extending from the Indian Ocean and lies between Africa & Asia. It holds the title of one of the saltiest bodies of water on earth  due mainly to its geological formation, leading to high evaporation levels. Due to the water's high salinity, divers should be aware that they will need to add extra weight to their normal amount to compensate for the extra buoyancy provided by these salty waters.

Whilst the Red Sea is primarily bordered by Egypt and Saudi Arabia, most diving liveaboards in the Red Sea offer diving safaris directly from Egypt, with multiple well-established tourist destinations located throughout the country from North to South. An Egypt dive safari on a liveaboard is the best way to see this amazing dive and snorkeling area.

Diving areas/regions can be split between North & South, with different dive trip itineraries offered in both areas.

Northern Red Sea

The northern area of the Egyptian Red Sea is a divers paradise, offering amazing dive cruises at world-famous dive sites such as the Straits of Tiran  and Ras Mohammed National Park . If diving wrecks is your thing, then the SS Thistlegorm or Dunraven wrecks will surely be a must-do on your dive list. A dive liveaboard departing from Sharm El Sheikh, Safaga, or Hurghada is an excellent way to fully explore the different dive sites available.

Southern Red Sea

To the south awaits some fantastic dive opportunities away from the crowds for those visiting on a liveaboard dive trip. Dive sites that are only accessible by overnight dive safaris can be explored. With well-known sites such as Daedalus Reef, The Brothers, St. Johns, Elphinstone, and Fury Shoals, it will surely delight all divers. Most liveaboard itineraries that operate in this southern area will depart from either Port Ghalib (Marsa Alam), Hamata or Hurghada.

Getting There

Northern Red Sea - Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada have their own international airports, with various international airlines flying directly to them. These would be a more convenient arrival port for dive liveaboard departures. Cairo is the main International airport in Egypt and will also offer domestic flights to most areas within Egypt.

Southern Red Sea - Marsa Alam International airport to the south is used by some international airlines, mainly from Europe. It is located very close to Port Ghalib (Marsa Ghalib), so it is a perfect arrival port for liveaboard trips from this area. Domestic flights from Cairo are also available. Land transfers from Hurghada to Port Ghalib are also possible; the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours each way.

I've dove both northern and Southern routes. If I had to choose which was more enjoyable, the southern route comes out on top.

Diving Red Sea in March on the Emperor Asmaa

  • 9.6 Exceptional

It was good, but would imagine it would be a great experience if better luck with wind conditions.

Diving Red Sea in April on the Snefro Pearl

  • 10.0 Exceptional

Beautiful corals and easy shallow dives

Diving Red Sea in April on the Emperor Elite

  • 8.0 Very good
  • Maximilian S

Average overall, reefs are not that good, so if there's no big fish, or a wreck, it could be a boring dive. If you've done any diving in Maldives or Asia, you won't be too impressed with reefs here.

Diving Red Sea in May on the Emperor Superior

Diving the Red Sea was great lots of life on the reef and corals are in great condition. Pay attention to what Wetsuit to bring at what time of year the Blue-O-Two guide was spot on. We dived in June with 5mm no hood and were comfortable

Diving Red Sea in May on the Blue Horizon

Very Healthy, vibrant corals - soft & hard, warm

Diving Red Sea in July on the Sea Serpent Contessa

Incredible as always for variety ! 26-28 degree water temps, low to moderate winds = smooth channel crossings

Diving Red Sea in August on the Blue Pearl

A little different than I expected but beautiful coral gardens

Diving Red Sea in August on the Snefro Pearl

  • Elizabeth P

Loved all of the different fish, unbelievable coral formations and many Nemo sightings. Best place we have ever been to.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Blue

Diving was very nice, but not our best experience. Water was warm enough so that a skin or 3 mil was all we needed. Visibility was okay but not great. No problem with current. Overall nice but not fabulous.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Blue Melody

Rich coral and fish life - the best I have ever encountered

Diving Red Sea in October on the Blue Melody

  • 6.8 Review score

3/10. Coral good but lacking color. Plenty of small fish but nothing larger. Extremely crowded dive sights; best quote was "100 divers for every shark seen". Many time the bubbles from so many other divers prevented seeing the sharks. At one dive sight I saw ~50 divers descend from the surface right in front of me. You have to memorize your boat name because there could be 40 zodiacs at the dive sight when you surface.

Diving Red Sea in October on the JP Marine

rougher waters than expected. not as colorful as expected. water temperature perfect.

Diving Red Sea in October on the Blue Horizon

The water was clear and a great place to dive.

Diving Red Sea in October on the SS Serena Dreams

The visibility was over 100 ft each day. This is my best week of diving and a new favorite destination

Diving Red Sea in November on the Emperor Elite

Best dives of my life--incredible light flowing through gorgeous hard and soft coral fields

Diving Red Sea in November on the Snefro Pearl

Best I've ever done. SO many fish, and so many varieties of corals.

Diving Red Sea in April on the SS Serena Dreams

Awesome coral and fish life

Diving Red Sea in April on the Tillis

Visibility was average at best at most sites and the marine life was pretty sparse. I guess I am used to a bigger ecosystem with plentiful quantities and species of fish in other places I have dove in the past.

Diving Red Sea in May on the Emperor Elite

good. vis wasn't the best.

Diving Red Sea in June on the Blue Storm

Beautiful. Warm, good visibility

I went for the large animal experiences, and there were none in the first week of November due to higher water temperatures.

Generally good. Manageable currents

Diving Red Sea in November on the Sea Serpent Grand

The coral was so vibrant and alive.

Diving Red Sea in March on the SS Serena Dreams

In the winter water is cold but visibility is good.

Diving Red Sea in December on the Blue Seas

Nice shark-points, but i didn´t like the reefs and corals, not really nice and colourful

Diving Red Sea in October on the Nouran

Diving Red Sea in March on the South Moon

The Red Sea as usual is very charming, beautiful and highly recommended.

Diving Red Sea in April on the Red Sea Blue Force 2

Not great visibility and a bit chilly (mid April) but still very good!,Not great visibility and a bit chilly (mid April) but still very good!

Diving Red Sea in April on the Blue Horizon

good, less pelagics than previously sadly and quite a lot of dead coral :(

Diving Red Sea in April on the Sea Serpent

I don't think you can get better value for money diving anywhere else.

Diving Red Sea in April on the Sea Serpent Grand

Great but with less fish than before.

Diving Red Sea in May on the Blue

  • Jean-Francois L

Nice but a very windy week

Diving Red Sea in May on the Blue Storm

Warm water, Superb visibility

Diving Red Sea in May on the JP Marine

Visibility was amazing (20m+) but cooler than expected (24 degrees).

Diving Red Sea in May on the Snefro Pearl

Corals are well intact, you can spot nice life, be it big or small.

Still - after several Red Sea diving experiences - diving in the Red Sea is exciting! And: as THE responsibility of all of us - To be protected and preserved for future generations!

Diving Red Sea in June on the Tillis

Corals are here healty and full of life.

Diving Red Sea in June on the Snefro Pearl

Every trip we saw different things! And variety of diving spots too,Good

Diving Red Sea in July on the Blue Melody

Diving Red Sea in September on the Sea Serpent Grand

Great (although not many big fishes)

Diving Red Sea in September on the Snefro Pearl

I felt cold at 27 degrees. Getting a 5ml for next time.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Snefro Target

  • Maximilian L

Crowded, Diving is a real Mass tourism in the Red sea.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Emperor Asmaa

Wasn't as good as it has been. Missing the sharks, octopus and turtles

Das rote meer fasziniert mich immer wieder mit den beeindruckenden Riffen und der Vielfalt.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Blue Horizon

Good. Visibility and fish not. not as good as previous trips to the Straits of Tiran.

Diving Red Sea in October on the Snefro Pearl

Very colorful, a lot of marine life, warm 29-30C water in early-october

Diving Red Sea in October on the Emperor Elite

Great BUT The Red Sea needs help and a rota of boats is essential to allow reef recovery. More attention needs to be devoted to environmental preservation in the dive briefing. The golden goose of liveaboards will evaporate if more species such as the already missing garden eels disappear altogether

Beautiful well-preserved reefs all over.

Diving Red Sea in October on the Tillis

Can only recommend - good vis and stunning reeves

Diving Red Sea in October on the South Moon

Great. The colours, the life, the different kind of fishes.

  • Maria Jose O

Amazing marine life and visibility, great weather in November.

Overall very enjoyable! Some coral bleaching noticeable in relation to the last time I was there around 10 years ago

Diving Red Sea in November on the JP Marine

  • Anastasiya D

Always plenty of fish, turtle, lion fish, stingray. Group saw a shark 2 times!

Diving Red Sea in November on the Freedom III

Warm water. Little chilly close to the coast but late in season.

Diving Red Sea in November on the Sea Serpent Contessa

Not so cold in the water, but super uncomfortable on surface on this time of the year. Visibility was very good

Diving Red Sea in January on the Snefro Pearl

Very good, but water in Febnruary is fresh (24 degrees)

Diving Red Sea in February on the Blue Storm

Warm(ish) water, nice marine life.

Diving Red Sea in March on the Emperor Superior

Diving Red Sea in March on the Sea Story

It wasn't the best. Apparently it was off season for everything

Diving Red Sea in March on the Blue Horizon

Excellent dives. Water moderately cold (21-23 C) in March.

Diving Red Sea in March on the Blue Melody

Good visibility, amazing colours and abundance of life

Diving Red Sea in March on the Freedom III

Red sea has it all. Colourfull reefs and also the big fish!!

Southern Red sea is a different vibe to the north, and well worth the travelling time.

Great visibility and the team are preserving the reef through education of guests

I loved it. You have such a nice mix of everything, from nudis to sharks, from reefs to blue waters... It's all there!

Diving Red Sea in May on the Tillis

Good visibility and plentiful coral and sea life, not too crowded given the number of dive boats about

Warm and wealthy of fish & reef, very nice.

May sea water temperature 24 Celsius - 5mm full wets uit recommended incl. hood. Beautiful corals (pinnacles and walls), great tropical fish life, no pelagic encounters.

Much better than a few years ago although still some poor dive sites that have nor recovered as well as others. Perhaps need to be left alone to recover?.

Red Sea is still one of most colorful and full of marine life dive sites in the world

Diving Red Sea in June on the Emperor Superior

Beautiful coral, canyons and variety of sea life

Diving Red Sea in June on the Sunshine

beautiful and warm water, 27deg and no need for a wet suit. (June Dive)

The diving overall was good. We didn't see so much "big stuff" unfortunately but the diving was enjoyable and we were able to enjoy a lovely night dive.

Diving Red Sea in July on the Blue

Overall fantastic diving- such an abundance of life and colour, with comparatively healthy reefs to what you can find elsewhere.

Warm waters (30 degrees), fantastic visibility and great dive sites - perfect!

Diving Red Sea in July on the Snefro Pearl

  • Antonio Gines B

Hay multitud de sitios de buceo para todos lo niveles y con la diversión asegurada.

Diving Red Sea in August on the Blue Seas

My first time diving there and exceeded my expectations. You're sailing past the most breathtaking scenery and beautiful shallows and reefs, and then you jump in and see the magical world down below.

I enjoyed my first time diving in the Red Sea. The coral gardens are magical. I had hoped to see more large fish, but perhaps the time of year and high water temperatures may have been factors in their absence. I will definitely be back, perhaps at a different time of year, hoping to see larger fish.

Overall, very impressed with diving in the Red Sea, the corals look healthy and there seems to be endless dive sites that provide a diversity but it does get crowded in peak season with other boats and divers. Didn’t see any hammerheads in the week and very few Longimanus - not that you can expect to see them but people used to describe the hotspots as teaming with sharks. Not sure if that’s a result of overfishing, climate change or just wrong place at the wrong time.

Diving Red Sea in September on the Blue Seas

The coral was lovely . . like a garden

Diving Red Sea in October on the Blue Storm

The clear waters were great to dive. The marine life was average, and we saw no large fish or sharks. Many corals were bleached and lifeless. The soft corals were few.

  • 4.4 Review score

water temperature around 28 °C, visibility often limited

Diving Red Sea in October on the Sunshine

  • 8.4 Very good

We had a lovely trip. Whale shark was an unexpected bonus on our trip.

Diving Red Sea in December on the Snefro Pearl

Good, although not much variation with the reef dives - saw many of the same things at each site.

Diving Red Sea in December on the Blue Melody

Water temperatures were great 24-25C, overall light currents, light traffic.

Diving Red Sea in December on the Emperor Elite

  • Moritz-Gabriel H

Nice visibillity, not that warm water, beuatiful dicespots

Diving Red Sea in January on the Tillis

Some of my best dives have been in the Red Sea. I can only recommend it! The night dives are not necessary, but that is just my humble opinion ;)

15l Tank, on the other hand, I would strongly recommend.

I wanted to go underwater again and again. That’s how my future dream got created. Some diving holidays later I became a rescue diver, and I went back to Koh Tao enjoying a sabbatical and started my Divemaster training.

Unfortunately, COVID came in between, so I postponed my Instructor course. I bridged this time in Germany continuing my office job, so I worked in the human resources for a health insurance company again until I got the once-in-a-lifetime chance to change my whole life last year.

I heard that Euro-Divers Maldives is looking for a German Speaking Instructor. So, I applied for that position, resigned from my job in Germany, went to Egypt, finally did my Instructor Course, and here I am, working in paradise.”

alina kazbekova female scuba diving instructor

Diving came into my life in 2015 when I decided to finish Open Water Course in Thailand – that time I spent all my money on that and had to hitchhike from Thailand to Russia for 1 month! Besides Thailand, I gained experience in Egypt, Colombia, Spain and Vietnam.

I worked online during those years and in a way started feeling I need something else – to fulfill my life with something positive I enrolled into a dive master course in Canary Islands.

It took me 2 months to realize I want to become an instructor – after taking a loan I headed back to Thailand a few months later to finish the IDC.

I spent wonderful time in Thailand working with big groups and in big teams, relocated to Vietnam for some time before I found job in Maldives with Euro-Divers.

Diving brings me peace, teaching brings me joy by seeing my students learning how to dive, experiencing new world, improving their skills and overcoming their fears.

If you feel like diving just go for it! Find the instructor you are comfortable with, study the theory and dive, dive, dive – different conditions, new emotions and new friends – you will totally love it.

Female scuba diving instructor with students on boat in Oman

Once I became Dive Instructor, I worked in different places around Egypt, Maldives, Thailand, Philippines till I ended up in Oman. In Maldives, I got the opportunity to develop myself to be a dive centre manager.

It’s been 10 years and still love to spend every single day teaching, diving, guiding and sustaining the environment. During all these years, our team managed to achieve different big goals, like being the only dive centre in Middle-East approved by UK’s Ministry of Defense & this was mainly possible due to our approach of safety first & friendly atmosphere with our guests.

The biggest challenge currently we have (like many others) is to survive the Covid times, however, we remain positive and hopeful that tourism will bounce back sooner or later and we will be able to dive with our international friends as we did pre-covid.

For those who hesitate about going diving: I suggest you to start slowly and enjoy a morning in our swimming pool first and once mastering the few skills and the breathing under water we will happily bring you out diving from the beach or the boat. – Karin

Diving reminded me of my earlier childhood when I couldn’t get enough of being in the water. I was instantly addicted to the feeling of moving freely and weightless in the water, surrounded by the most beautiful colors and creatures, just listening to my own breathing. It is my pleasure to guide guests to let them experience this feeling too.

I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to combine my office and management skills with teaching and guiding the diving guests.

I am a scuba instructor since 7 years, I have been working with Euro-Divers since in Egypt then later they gave me the opportunity to work in the Maldives where I still live. As a female diver I’ve never had any trouble in this activity, neither since I am instructor. Generally, in the diving industry, you will find yourself outnumbered more by men than women so that can be intimidating at first but hey! guys have realized by now that us girls can be as good (if not better) as them underwater 😉 !

Scuba diving has changed completely my life, as I was working at the front office, I resigned from my position to start my career in diving, from then, I have been working in Mexico, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Maldives looking forward for new opportunities.

Diving was for me is most amazing challenge of my life, as I was not very confident in the water, scared of the ocean!

Diving is for anyone who want to go above their comfort zone and achieve what you think you are not able to do.

The best evasion of the mind is to be underwater but also to share this passion to others.

Even though I was surrounded by my family and friends, had good jobs, and a nice apartment to live in, but I knew something was missing in my life.

I did my first dive in Koh Tao, and I simply fell in love with it and never stop diving since.

Scuba diving gave me the wings to fly away from a settled life and brings me the happiness I never felt in my heart. Being in the Ocean is like being at home for me.

It creates a community and there are no boundaries between people who love to share stories about it.

Becoming a diver gives you the chance to feel, to live, to explore, and to admire this unique underwater world. Just jump, open your eyes, and take your first breath in the Ocean.

And, when you will be surrounded by those beautiful aquatic creatures you will understand how it is like to fly in paradise.

Diving is like meditation for me. I like the feeling of just floating, chilling and very quickly I get addicted to it.

One day I just decided to become a diving instructor myself and my diving career started in Cairns Australia and Guam USA.

The Maldives is home to the world’s largest population of reef manta rays, and back then I’ve never seen manta rays.

That’s what brought me to beautiful Maldives in 2017. Of course, I love all the underwater animals, however, I would like to share the wonderful feeling of peace and relaxation underwater.

Like everyone has different food taste, everyone can find different diving taste, not only for the depth and time, also finding different big/small animals, corals, topography, enjoy the silence, zero-gravity, water flow etc.

Due to a change of the insurance policies from DAN we would like to inform you, that all divers which are  75 years or older , must produce a medical certification from a physician knowledgeable about diving.  The certificate should mention your fitness to dive – your current health conditions – any medication you take and its dosage.

The medical certificate has to be sent to Euro-Divers by e-mail in order to being able to clear your diving activities with DAN and to ensure that the insurance criteria’s for diving with Euro-Divers are met.

No diving activities will be possible until DAN has cleared the respective person for diving.  Please send the details at least  10 days  prior to your arrival to  [email protected]  or  [email protected]  in order to ensure that the clearance from DAN can be obtained. We will inform you as soon as we have the clearance from DAN.

Red Sea Diving Safari: Experience The Red Sea By Liveaboard

Red Sea Diving Safari

You may have already dived the Red Sea based in a hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh or Hurghada, or perhaps you’ve never dived the Red Sea before now. But either way, one of the best ways to experience the diving is by a Red Sea Diving Safari , which is to dive from a liveaboard dive boat .

A Red Sea diving safari is where you spend a week or more on a liveaboard dive boat diving up to three times every day. If you’re a beginner diver a Red Sea diving safari is the best way to build-up your experience cheaply, as the Red Sea liveaboards are some of the lowest priced boats you can find.

But don’t worry, the Red Sea is equally as good for experienced divers too, as there are plenty of fantastic dive sites for all diver levels of experience.

The best way to dive the Red Sea, and especially the best and more remote locations in the Red Sea, is by a scuba diving liveaboard . You can check the latest and best deals on Red Sea liveaboards using the following window:

What is a Red Sea diving safari experience like?

As a scuba diver, a Red Sea diving safari is possibly one of the best experiences you can do. A Red Sea diving safari is for both beginner divers and experienced divers to enjoy. A typical day on a Red Sea diving safari liveaboard is as follows:

  • Early wake up for a morning dive before breakfast – I’ve always found this one of there best times to see sharks on a dive.
  • Have a hearty breakfast, which is often served buffet style and is usually local food.
  • Relax on the liveaboard chatting with like minded divers about your first dive of the day, read a book, sun bathe or edit your video footage.
  • Get ready for the second dive of the day.
  • Have lunch, which is often buffet style too, but can also be a BBQ, and then relax and enjoy chatting or doing whatever you like to do in-between dives.
  • Third dive of the day, which is sometimes a night dive.
  • Enjoy dinner with old and new friends discussing the day’s diving.

What are the benefits of a Red Sea diving safari

The benefits of a Red Sea diving safari in Egypt include the following:

  • Enjoy diving on sites that are out of reach of the day boats.
  • Spend time with likeminded people.
  • Liveaboard diving safaris are great fun.
  • Best way to do the most number of dives in a week.
  • Best way to build diving experience as a beginner diver.
  • Cost per dive tends to be cheaper than resort based diving.
  • A better chance to night dive.
  • Visit less crowded dive sites.
  • More chances to see sharks in the more remote locations.
  • Dive The Brothers and Elphinstone Reef not reachable by day-boats from Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh.

How much does it cost to scuba dive in the Red Sea, Egypt?

The cost to scuba dive in the Red Sea from a liveaboard boat ranges from the cheapest at $45 per day to the most expensive at $168 per day. If you pick a liveaboard at the mid price point of around $100 per day, you can’t go too far wrong to really enjoy a Red Sea Safari.

With the $100 price point in mind, you may like to take a look at the Seawolf Diving Safari boats . Seawolf Diving Safaris have three dive liveaboards to choose from and each of them are rate over 9 out of 10 but customers. Well worth considering for your Red Sea diving safari.

The prices of Red Sea liveaboards generally includes all your diving, which is normally around 18-20 dives per week, a full board meal plan and snacks, drinking water, tea coffee and soft drinks.

Some Red Sea dive safari boats include free WiFi, alcoholic drinks and free nitrox in their price, but if you want to find out more about all the Red Sea liveaboards and what each one costs and offers, please go to this article “ The best Red Sea Liveaboard dive boats “.

In this article, you’ll find a very handy table of all the Red Sea liveaboards, which you can sort by price, whether or not free nitrox is included, the customer review rating, and so on.

But you may now be asking is the Red Sea good for diving if the liveaboards are that cheap?

Liveaboard.com search Egypt scroll

Is the Red Sea good for diving?

The Red Sea is not just good for diving, but it has to be one of the best places to dive in the world. This is because of the crystal clear warm waters, the colourful reefs have an abundance of sea life, including loads of sharks if you like diving with sharks , and good wrecks like the Thistlegorm.

The SS Thistlegorm has to be my favourite wreck dive, and I was once fortunate enough to dive it at night too. Night diving on the Thistlegorm is extremely rare due to the strong local currents, and you need to be a very experienced diver to do it. This dive was my best and deepest night diver ever, where I saw two giant leatherback turtles sleeping on the wreck…it was awesome.

The wreck itself is an extremely interesting World War II wreck that was made famous by Jacques Cousteau . You might like to watch this video for a taster of the SS Thistlegorm dive.

When it comes to Red Sea reef diving, my favourite reef in the Red Sea is Elphinstone Reef, which is amazing for sharks. I have seen hammerhead sharks , Oceanic white tip sharks , a thresher shark and reef sharks on Elphinstone Reef. But others have also seen whale sharks and tiger sharks , which occasionally visit the Elphinstone Reef too.

Things to be aware of when diving Elphinstone Reef is to be careful around oceanic white tip sharks , as they can be very inquisitive. You may like to read this article and watch the video about the  Brothers shark attack . Discover  how the shark attack could have been avoided  if the diver had followed the four rules of safe diving with sharks.

Plus be aware of the strong currents that run in a north-south direction, plus this is a bottomless dive where you’ll need to have mastered your buoyancy control . It is the strong currents and deep depths of this dive site that makes it more for advanced divers, and before you dive the Elphinstone you need to have drift diving experience .

And if that hasn’t convinced you that the Red Sea is good for diving , take a look at this video of sharks at Daedalus Reef on a south Red Sea diving safari.

In this video these divers experienced a white tip reef shark, a thresher shark, schooling hammerhead sharks , up close and personal with oceanic white tip sharks ,

But on top of that, there’s scuba diving the Brothers , which is another amazing dive site. The following video includes diving The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone, where you’ll also see the abundance of other sea life too.

This video also includes a night dive , which is normally the third dive of the day on a Red Sea diving safari.

Seeing that you may like the idea of  scuba diving with sharks (especially if you want to dive Elphinstone or the Brothers), you may like to read this article about  great white sharks in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico .

You may be surprised by what you read, I certainly was!

If you would like to book and experience a Red Sea diving safari, you should take a look at this article about the best Red Sea dive liveaboards . As already mentioned, this article includes a handy table of all the Red Sea liveaboards to help you make your decision about which dive liveaboard to choose.

The table is packed with information about the key elements to each dive liveaboard, which include:

  • Customer review rating out of 10.
  • Price per day in GBP, US Dollar and Euro.
  • Which ones include flexible booking terms.
  • Which liveaboards have nitrox on board and which of these include it for free.
  • Where specific dietary requirements are catered for, including vegan and vegetarian options.
  • Whether the boat has internet, and if so is it paid for or free.
  • Max number of guests, number of cabins and bathrooms, plus whether the cabins have air con and ensuites.
  • Whether the dive liveaboard has dive courses, sidemount diving support, plus if the boat is tech diver or rebreather friendly.
  • Minimum experience and minimum logged dives required to enjoy the Red Sea diving safari on the particular liveaboard.

Table of liveaboard diving in the Red Sea

This list of  Red Sea liveaboards is in descending customer rating order, followed by  Scuba Diving Luxury Rating  (SDE Lux Rating, see below) , so the liveaboards with the highest customer rating and the best  SDE lux rating  will be at the top of the list. If you want to change the list order, use the “ Sort by ” dropdown below.

Please select a column to search in.

Please type in something to search for.

The Scuba Diving Earth Luxury Rating (SDE Lux Rating) is explained on each liveaboard review when you click the “Discover Liveaboard” link, and is my own Liveaboard Luxury Rating I’ve assigned to  all liveaboards . Choosing between liveaboards is helped by customer scores, and if you get stuck choosing between two or three liveaboards, where each one has a high customer score out of 10, you can use the SDE Luxury Rating to help narrow down your choice.

Think about it like using Booking.com when searching for the best hotel. Booking.com also use a customer score where each customer rates hotels out of 10. This is similar to the liveaboard customer rating, which is also rated out of 10. But let’s say you only like to stay in hotels rated 8 and above on Booking.com, but you also want the hotel to have WIFI or parking, or to have a swimming pool etc. The features each hotel has is usually secondary to the score out of 10.

I hope you enjoyed this article about a Red Sea diving safari

I’d love to hear from you. Tell us about your adventures of diving and snorkeling, in the comments below. But in particular if you’ve been on the Master liveaboard. Please also share your photos. Either from your underwater cameras or videos from your waterproof go-pro’s!

If this article hasn’t answered all of your questions. If you have more questions either about snorkeling or  scuba diving  ( or specifically about a Red Sea diving safari ), please comment below with your questions.

There will also be many more articles about scuba and  scuba diving safety tips  (and on snorkeling too) for you to read and learn about this fabulous sport.

Diving in the Red Sea

Quick facts, best time to go, march to may.

The best time to dive in the Red Sea is from March to May or September to November. However, the Red Sea can be dived by liveaboard year-round, and the best time to dive this Middle Eastern region is a matter of personal preference. December to February is the winter around the Red Sea. During these months, the water is quite cold, dipping to 72˚F (22˚C) in Egypt. Keep in mind that temperatures in Sudan are normally one or two degrees higher both above and below the water. However, during the winter months, you’ll have the best chance at spotting an oceanic whitetip shark in Egypt or hammerhead sharks in Sudan. December to February also boasts the best visibility in the Red Sea. Finally, the winter months represent the windy season, meaning that surface conditions may become quite rough, particularly in northern Egypt. March to May are the spring months in the Red Sea. At this time, the air and water temperatures are both moderately warm, offering a fantastic balance. This is also the best time to see a whale shark, particularly in the northern section of the Red Sea. However, March to May is high season for diving in the Red Sea, so expect some dive sites to be crowded. June to August are the low season for the Red Sea. Air temperatures reach uncomfortable levels for outside activity. But, the warmer temperatures force hammerhead sharks further north into Egyptian waters. June to September are the best months to swim with these predators in the north section of the Red Sea. The summer months are also your best bet for snagging great liveaboard deals. Finally, September to November is the autumn season in the Red Sea. Again, air and sea temperatures balance for comfort above and below the surface. These three months are also the best time to spot thresher sharks throughout Sudanese and Egyptian waters. The autumn is also the best time for manta rays in Sudan. Much like the spring months, liveaboards in the Red Sea can be crowded at this time.

Welcome To Marsa Shagra

RED SEA DIVING SAFARI

About the Village

  • Locations & Landmarks
  • Accommodation
  • Outlets & Facilities

A visit to Marsa Alam would not be complete without a stay at Marsa Shagra. It is one of the most well-known destinations in Marsa Alam and was established more than 30 years ago as a diving camp. It occupies a stunning location in the Southern Red Sea with one of the most beautiful House Reefs in the region. Although the village has changed a lot since 1990, the concept and atmosphere remains the same, offering a chance for our guests to experience the incredible natural resources that the Red Sea has to offer, both on land and underwater.

The village is centrally located for exploring Marsa Alam’s highlights which are all focussed on nature-based enjoyment. Desert excursions, trips to Wadi El Gemal National Park, El Nayzak Beach, Qulaan Lagoon, Sharm el Luli and Ras Hankorab are all within easy reach. Our sustainable tourism model was established by our founder Mr Hossam Helmy back in 1990 and has meant that access to Marsa Shagra is exclusive and limited to the number of people that the house reef can tolerate.

A range of accommodation options are available, from our traditional Royal Tents on the beach which let you experience Marsa Shagra as it used to be, through to our new Superior Deluxe Chalets with air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms and unbeatable views of the sea and mountains. Meals are served in our iconic buffet restaurant which caters to all tastes and requirements, with additional a la carte options available. There is no better way to start your day than with breakfast overlooking the house reef! End your day with a traditional Gabana or Beer at our Bawadi Bedouin Cafe, surrounded by friends, new and old.

Scuba divers and snorkelers enjoy unlimited use of our house reef which is accessible from the beach by a sheltered, convenient entry point taking you directly to the underwater world. Certified divers may dive independently and unguided according to their certification, giving complete independence and freedom in your diving plans. The house reef stretches over 2km to the north and south and zodiacs are available during daylight hours to allow you to explore every corner of it. As well as the house reef, world famous dive sites such as Elphinstone and Abu Dabab off-shore reefs are just a short distance away. With depths of more than 40m at the fringing reef, Marsa Shagra an ideal playground for free divers who enjoy practicing their skills in a sheltered environment which is rich in marine life. Many also choose to take development sessions with our AIDA instructor or join one of our free diving excursions which offer the chance to free dive with dolphins, dugong, through canyons and on wrecks.

Clear your mind at our Yoga Shala, the ultimate space for yoga, under the guidance of our yoga instructor at sunrise and sunset, or through independent meditation and practice.

Marsa Shagra offers a slice of peace away from the hustle and bustle of the modern-day world, giving you time and space to enjoy true nature and relax.

If you've never visited the southern Red Sea, Marsa Shagra is definitely the place to begin.

Dive the Red Sea: Our Favourite Red Sea Safari Itinerary

safari red sea

The Scuba Place talks about why the Deep South itinerary on Big Blue is their favourite Red Sea Safari….  Do you agree?

RED SEA WALL TO WALL ,  BDE  or  SIMPLY THE BEST ?  Whatever name you know this itinerary by, we can attest they all make perfect sense.

Sea to Sky

If you don’t know what I am talking about, then here is a guide to what I consider to be the very best liveaboard reef itinerary there is in the Red Sea. And I say reef deliberately so as not to confuse those who like all things rusty underwater – this is all about pretty things and fish, not hunks of metal! Although… there is a little bit of that too!

Some operators refer to this trip as “Simply the Best’, and I totally get that. Some call it simply Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone, and I can’t argue with that either. Some call it Red Sea – Wall to Wall, and that makes perfect sense too.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

What is safe to say is, whatever you or they call it, this itinerary totally rocks!

There aren’t many divers across the globe who don’t know how good the Red Sea is, and we here in the UK are spoilt rotten by the fact that it is a mere 5 and a bit hours away. The resorts of Dahab, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam all offer really really good day boat diving, and the safaris are world class. The very best sites to dive are the offshore reefs where currents keep the corals super clean and healthy, and where the bigger animals come to feed and get cleaned – and the stars of these offshore reefs have to be The Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone.

Elphinstone is the only reef that is reachable by day boat – there are super-fast RIBS from Marsa Abu Dabbab that will make this trip, and day boats from Port Ghalib also make this trip, a journey that takes approximately 2 hours. But if more big reef diving is your preference, then the only way to do this is on a liveaboard safari.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

Elphinstone itself is pretty spectacular. Sha’ab Abu Hamra, its proper name, is a reef that sits just below the surface some 6 and a half miles out to sea from Abu Dabbab. Bizarrely, for such a spectacular dive, the reef is a mere 300m long and some 20m wide at the surface. Running North to South, with steps down to 42 and 40m at either end, the reef ‘grows’ as you descend. Below the lowest steps, the reef drops into the abyss – and allegedly, no one knows how deep the drop-off actually goes!

It is, however, the depth of this reef that makes it so healthy and populated – the up currents bring food from the depths, making the reef at Elphinstone a super-sized dining table if you like! The corals are spectacular – big as can be, the brightest of bright and variety of colours, and marine life swarms the reef. The schools of anthias here are second to none, and bannerfish, parrot fish, damsels and surgeon fish add to the party. Sponges and beautiful soft corals fill your view as you look at the reef.

It is also super important to keep an eye on the blue too – barracuda, tuna and trevally sweep by constantly. Turtles and Napoleon wrasse are also often found here, and both mantas and whalesharks come by, but it is the sharks that really are the draw here. White tip and grey reef sharks are commonly seen, but the highlights here have to be the Longimanus – Oceanic Whitetip – and the hammerhead sharks.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

Our trip in May 2023 also delivered not one but two Thresher sharks on this dive site! We managed three drift dives – the expert zodiac crew dropping us off at the Northern point and meeting us at the Southern tip at the end of the dive on two of the three dives, letting us use the current to drift along at some speed and pop up an SMB at the end of the dive. Our third dive, the current had dropped to almost nothing, so we dropped down to the plateau at the southern end of the reef and hung around with a huge barracuda and a couple of Napoleon wrasse.

A good safari boat will give you a full day of diving here at Elphinstone, but it will be for one day at the beginning of the trip in all likelihood – there are no anchoring points here for overnight stays. An additional day might be available at the end of the trip if you are super unfortunate and the weather disrupts the other sites, but that isn’t that unlucky in my book!

Next comes the dives at The Brothers. Big Brother and Little Brother sit approximately 35 miles off the mainland coast of Egypt – far enough to make them reachable only by safari boat. That is great news for divers on a liveaboard – no day boats! However, there can be lots of safari boats, but a good Captain and Dive Manager will work with the other boats to make sure there are as few divers as possible in the water at any time.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

The local name for the Brothers is El Akhawein, and these two islands are reputed to be the very best dive destination in the Red Sea. They sit in a protected marine reserve, and like Elphinstone, there are no moorings here, so no night dives or overnight stays. Both islands are uninhabited, although there is an operation lighthouse on Big Brother.

There are also two wrecks on Big Brother – the Aida which sits between 15 and 45 metres on the Western side of the island, and the Numidia, sitting between 10 and 85 metres deep on the Northern side. Both are excellent wrecks and have been down long enough to be overgrown with corals and inhabited by marine life.

The Numidia wreckage breaks up the reef nicely and we found numerous huge, bearded scorpion fish and a handful of nudibranchs sitting on its superstructure, pipefish and again, large Napoleon wrasse, but seeing another thresher shark, closely followed by a large manta ray was the highlight for me.

We crammed in four dives here – one on Little Brother and three on the big sibling. They were all totally amazing – this has to be my very favourite spot in the Red Sea. Straight to the point – manta ray, thresher shark, grey reef shark, turtles, hordes of schooling fish and the most stunning soft corals ever. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

It was then on to Daedalus Reef. I have tried to get here on several occasions in the past but got beaten by the weather and other circumstances but this time, with now flat calm seas, I knew we were going to get there! A long overnight sail against the wind had us arrive at about 0500 and then it was down to some serious deep sleep before waking for a day of diving.

Daedalus Reef, also known as Abu Kizan, is a pinnacle with a man-made island and lighthouse sitting atop. It can be found c.50 miles out to sea, due east of Marsa Alam and slap bang in between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Accessible only by liveaboard, this is a super-remote place and a protected marine park. This, combined with the flowing currents, make it incredibly populated and super-healthy.

Diving on the east side in the morning and the west side in the afternoon gives the very best light, and whilst we try to do this, all diving here is decided by the currents. The good news is, although no night dives are permitted, overnight stays are, and this means another day of diving is available! This was a no-brainer for us, the diving here is phenomenal!

As well as the now common abundance of incredible corals and reef inhabitants that we experienced on this trip, Daedalus is probably the best place in the Red Sea to see hammerhead sharks in big numbers, for they seem to school here. On this trip, we didn’t get to see schooling hammerheads, but we did get several individuals on each dive. We also saw another manta, plenty of trevally, a school of barracuda, a turtle or two and some of the healthiest corals ever. Other divers allegedly saw a whaleshark, but not us!

On top of that, the surface intervals here give you an opportunity to leave the safari boat and go on to the island, climb up the lighthouse where the views are amazing, and even buy a t-shirt from the ‘shop’ on the island.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

I have dived the Red Sea for more than 15 years now, going at least twice a year, and that is a lot of diving. I love the amazing wrecks to the North, Rasmo and Tiran too, but honestly, for me, there is nothing like hitting these huge offshore reefs and experiencing their amazing offerings.

Thresher sharks? Mantas? Oceanic white tips? Hammerheads? Yes – and so much more -all in some of the healthiest and most beautiful coral environments there are.

Want to be blown away? Do this trip. Simply the Best works for me!

Our vessel for the week was the British-owned and operated Big Blue. At 42m, she is one of the larger boats in the fleet and sleeps up to 22 people so there’s a lot of space on board. Smaller boats take more people, but we like space! We had twinset and side mount divers with us, and no one was cramped on the dive deck. The food is great and there is plenty of it, the crew are highly professional and fun, the air-conditioning works and the cabins are plenty big enough. Beers are cheap, which helps, and mixers are free of charge should you bring some gin on board.

Big Blue does not mandate the number of dives you need to book a trip or set a minimum qualification other than Open Water (or equivalent), but what they do insist upon is that you both have a reel and SMB, and that you can use it properly. The check dive will involve everyone sending up an SMB, just to ensure a level of competence.

Deep South Red Sea - The Scuba Place

Key Facts :

  • Getting there :  Easy Jet flies from Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester direct to Hurghada in just 5 hours. We were greeted by staff airside with our visa which is a great service! Saved us from queueing to purchase our visa. Once we had baggage in hand we loaded up for a quick 15 minutes to the marina.
  • Air temperature :  Varies from a low of 21°C in December January to 32°C in July August.
  • Water temperature :  24-28°C. A 3-5mm full suit will suit most in the summer months.
  • Visa requirement :  for £30 we had a VIP visa service offered by Big Blue. We were met airside with our visa and avoided standing in the queue to purchase.
  • Health protocols :  You do not need to show a COVID vaccination certificate or negative COVID test to enter Egypt. Health officials may screen you for COVID symptoms on arrival. They may also randomly select travellers for rapid antigen testing.
  • Currency :  Egyptian pounds, Euros, British pounds are all accepted on board Big Blue.
  • Electricity :  220V with 2 prong sockets. An extension lead is always a good idea.
  • Internet and Wi-Fi :  There is limited signal when out to sea. We did take along a dongle and purchased a sim card at the airport for £10 for 20G of data.

Price Guide:  Expect from £1650 per person with EasyJet flights based on two sharing a standard cabin for 7-night safari with NITROX included. Marine park and Port fees are also included but the Environmental tax of €70 will be collected on board. Bar bill and tips are extra.

Our Advice:  If you haven’t been on Big Blue give it a try. It’s spacious and super comfortable and they have a relaxed attitude with an emphasis on diver safety. Half and full charters are available as well as individual spaces. We’d be happy to help your dive club charter a week!

Packing tips :

  • Reef friendly sunscreen :  The sun can be fierce on the water so come prepared!
  • Reading material :  Bring your Kindle loaded with a few books – remember wifi signal can be sketchy… or a few paperbacks… there’s a shelf in the salon for book sharing if you want to leave them behind.

And most importantly….

  • SMB and reel : and please make sure you know how to use it.

Red Sea Diving Safari, a Must do!

safari red sea

When you think about Egypt, the first thing that probably pops into your mind are the pyramids and the rich ancient history of the country. But did you know it’s also one of the best scuba dive destinations in the world? As divers, we knew this already, so besides the culture trip around Egypt, we also went for an amazing Red Sea Diving Safari in a gorgeous dive camp/resort on the Egyptian east coast.

We visited the Red Sea Diving Safari in Marsa Shagra in November to check out the beautiful underwater world of the Red Sea for ourselves. We chose for Red Sea Diving Safari because we heard very good stories and their camp looks incredible. Glamping tents on the beach, huts, spacious chalets, and a huge area to prepare your diving gear. In this blog, we tell you all about our experience.

Red Sea Diving Safari

Red Sea Diving Safari has 3 different camps in the Marsa Alam area. Their most popular one is Marsa Shagra Village, 22 km north of Marsa Alam and about 260km south of Hurghada. This desert camp on the beach really focuses on all things diving. Upon arrival, after check-in, you can immediately check out the Red Sea since they have beach access to a huge house reef. In order to protect the underwater life everyone, including experienced divers, will join an introduction dive where they will tell you everything about the location and how to keep the reef healthy.

They offer packages for renting gear and you can stall it out at the preparation area. There are lockers for your gear and a huge drying area for your wetsuit and BCD’s. Also, you can find freshwater tanks to clean all your gear. After the introduction dive, you can dive in the house reef as much as you like, you can simply grab an air tank if you need one. But also if you want guided dives or boat dives they have plenty of options for you.

safari red sea

Reefs and Dive Sites

In the area are over 60 dive sites. The house reef can be accessed by the beach, others are a bit further down the coast and you can go by boat. There are also some cool offshore reefs pretty far out and they are amazing! For some other dive sites, you can go with a van to Marsa Alam and go by a big boat from there. Plenty of options, and we will list some of our favorites outside the house reef:

Elphinstone Reef

This Red Sea dive site is an offshore reef located about 9km into the sea and you can go there with one of the speed boats. It’s ranked in the top 10 dive sites of the world. It’s pretty cool to sail out on the sea surrounded by deep water and suddenly you find a reef. Around here you can often see big Oceanic White Tip Sharks which are so cool to watch. For this reef, you need to be an advanced diver with a minimum of 50 dives.

safari red sea

Shaab Samadai / Dolphin House

This reef is a bit further away. It’s about 45 minutes sailing from Marsa Alam but worth the visit! Also an offshore reef in the middle of the sea it’s formed like a big underwater bay and that bay is home to a large pod of dolphins. To protect the dolphins there are 3 zones. The first zone you can not access, it’s where the dolphins live. The second zone is for snorkeling and often the pod of dolphins comes out to swim there as well. The 3 rd zone is for the boats and for diving, and besides seeing the dolphins while snorkeling, diving is incredible here too! There are many huge underwater reef pillars and a stunning underwater canyon where you can dive through. It was one of the favorite places we dived during our visit.

safari red sea

Sharm Abu Dabab

There is a lot of underwater life in the Red Sea and another incredible creature you can often find towards the dive site Sharm Abu Dabab is the Dugong. This large sea cow often hangs around here but, unfortunately, we couldn’t find it on our way over to the dive site but there were some dolphins hanging out with us when we sailed over there. And diving here was still very beautiful with a lot of different corals and plenty of fish.

safari red sea

There are many more stunning dive sites, but unfortunately, we only had 3 days to explore the Red Sea. You can find information about the other dive sites here .

Accommodation

Whether you want to stay in a nice tent on the beach with sea view and your feet in the sand, or want to be able to relax in a chalet with aircon, there is plenty of choice at Red Sea Diving Safari. When we visited we had the luck to stay in one of their new Deluxe Chalets. It was very spacious with a huge bathroom and big bedroom. Outside was a nice area to sit down and watch the surroundings after a nice day of being underwater. You can find all types of accommodation here.

safari red sea

Besides all the facilities for diving, there is much more. It’s important to not forget your inner selves when you are out on and under the water all day. It’s a good thing that breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included! It was all so good! Plenty of variations and enough to choose from in their on-site restaurant. They also have a shop on site for necessities and souvenirs and there is a snackbar where you can drink during the day.

Furthermore, you can find several hammocks around the tent sites and areas to relax in the shade or sun. If you don’t want to go diving every day Red Sea Diving Safari also offer other tours, or if you need transport from or to Marsa Alam or Hurghada they can organize it too. We can recommend going with them since they have a fair price and it’s sometimes a bit difficult to find a good taxi for the long distance if you come from Hurghada.

We had an amazing time diving in the Red Sea and we can definitely recommend it. If you are into diving or if you want to learn it it’s both great. Discovery Kite

The Kite Safari in general is a super unique trip, but Alice, Momo and the crew are making it even more unique. Super helpful, funny and well organized, We`ve had 100% Wind and discovered unbelievable islands and lonely sandbanks. The food was amazing – my first kite trip without hunger. Momo and his Team are always open for tips to improve the kite skills and Alice has taken super cool pictures. My recommendation: Go for it and send it 🙂

Awesome trip with the Discovery team. Especially Momo, very nice and gave me lots of tips for kitesurfing. I look forward to the reunion next year!

Very good Trainers, top equipment, nice atmosphere, best places to kite. It was a great event with Discovery Kite. Momo was a great instructor! Very friendly, smiling every time, and always knows what you want to do. Thanks for everything!!

Perfect, nice people, very good teachers, lovely atmosphere, killer kite area.

Red sea international welcomes overseas flights serving new resorts.

Celebrating the inaugural flight of flydubai to the Red Sea International Airport on April 18, 2024 ... [+] brings reality one step closer.

It’s no secret that yachting is big in Saudi Arabia. If things go as planned, yachting is about to get much bigger along the coast of the Red Sea. What does that have to do with airports? Projects like NEOM, Sheybara Island, and Sindalah display development plans expected to offer more than 3,500 marina berths upon completion of the region’s ambitious Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 plan.

Marina plans are lavish and extensive, nudging up close to amenities often sought by superyacht guests. While encouraging owners to bring their yachts to the Red Sea after the Mediterranean season winds down, the option to take to the air to make that jump is becoming a viable option.

On Thursday, April 18, the inaugural flydubai flight is scheduled to fly from Dubai’s DXB airport to deliver passengers to the brand new Red Sea International Airport , RSI, in Saudi Arabia according to a press release issued by Red Sea Global. This marks an important milestone welcoming the first international connection.

A host on flydubai stand ready to welcome guests on board the first international flight to Red Sea ... [+] International Airport, RSI, scheduled for April 18, 2024.

Flydubai will arrive on a twice a weekly schedule, Thursdays and Sundays, joining Saudia Airlines. Saudia has been serving RSI since September of 2023. The addition will increase the number of flights to eight per week from DXB. At the time of writing this article, fares for the April 18 flight, returning to Dubai on April 21, are available for $1590 AED, or $430.25 USD, each way. When fully complete, the facility is expected to serve one million guests per year according to Red Sea Global CEO John Pagano.

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Quoting Michael White, Chief Commercial Officer of Red Sea International Airport, “The arrival of international travelers represents an exciting next phase in RSI’s development, following our first domestic flights touching down in September last year. We are committed to providing exceptional services to passengers and airlines alike and we look forward to further expanding our network to serve The Red Sea and travelers from around the world.”

Nearby, the NEOM Airport welcomed its first air passengers to the area in January of 2019. NEOM is a part of the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative.

Gates at Red Sea International Airport will welcome international flights via flydubai, joining ... [+] Saudia Airlines, bringing eight flights weekly to the region.

About The Airport

If you haven’t heard about Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 new developments planned along the Red Sea coast, know that the undertaking is massive. An array of ultra-luxurious resorts, dining, marinas, diving, shopping, golf courses, and recreation options are to be focused on regenerative tourism intending to diversify the oil economy of the region.

A rendering of the Red Sea International Airport, about 90 kilometers south of Al Wajh, as it will ... [+] look upon completion, embracing five mini terminals able to operate independently to reduce energy use.

Upon its scheduled completion in entirety, The Red Sea Project envelope currently embraces 50 resorts, 8,000 hotel rooms, 1,000 residential properties, 22 islands, and six sites further inland. And that does not include other regional projects, like NEOM, The Mukaab, Trojena, and Oxagon. Power for all this is generated from the already built and operational 760,000 panels in five off-grid solar farms, the world’s largest battery storage facility checkin in at 1.2 Gigawatt hours.

The Red Sea International Airport is small, but its design is intended to provide white-glove service to an ultra-high end luxury traveler. Designed to become the first carbon-neutral airport in the Middle East, the facility uses local materials, minimizes light pollution, and incorporates 100 percent renewable energy in accordance with minimum LEED Gold Certification building standards. The main terminal, set to fully open in 2025, is built with five small terminals able to operate independently as demand dictates, reducing energy use.

Red Sea International is designed for guests to feel relaxed and pampered, with baggage systems that ... [+] seamlessly deliver luggage to guest destinations while providing a see-through window from arrival to plane via expansive glass walls.

About the Region

Enormous projects that the airport currently serve include the Six Senses Southern Dunes at the Red Sea and the St. Regis Red Sea Resort. Additional resorts scheduled to open in 2024 name Nujuma, a Ritz Carlton Reserve that is one of only seven worldwide, the Shebara resort featuring stainless steel orb overwater villas, and the Desert Rock resort tucked between the mountain range and the western seacoast.

Notably large developments here include the Mukaab in Riyadh, a giant cube 400 meters x 400 meters x 400 meters. The structure will house a central tower surrounded by a huge screen display, delivering 100,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and 980,000 square meters of retail space.

The Line in NEOM will build a 170 kilometer structure intended to house nine million residents in compact, linear neighborhoods connected by underground transit. Trojena is an outdoor ski destination that is 50 kilometers from the Red Sea Coast, already scheduled to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

Sindalah is designed as a luxury island destination with an 86 berth marina and 75 offshore buoys, yacht club, 51 luxury retailers, three luxury hotels, and a bevy of services.

Red Sea Global and the Public Investment Fund

A closed joint-stock company owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the projects being undertaken by Red Sea Global look to a sustainable future that will diversify its economy while nurturing the environment.

There are some who question the scope of the project, critical of its claim to sustainability, and concerned whether much of the planned vision is truly viable. Others state confusion regarding the various areas of development. For that, a decent primer is provided by Middle East Travel and Tourism Editor, John Navarre.

Pros and cons aside, many photos and videos of actual construction of infrastructure and luxurious hospitality facilities regularly document progress. In the interim, Red Sea Global has put together a music album delivering a mix of Saudi, Arab, and African cultural pieces to further inspire visions of Red Sea landscapes for future guests of the region. Sweet dreams.

March Red Sea recap: Navy keeps up with steady pace of Houthi attacks

safari red sea

The Navy responded to a regular stream of engagements with Iran-backed Houthi militants in the Middle East over the last month, including the first fatal strike on a commercial ship by the Yemen-based group.

Go here for Navy Times’ up-to-date tracker of incidents between the U.S. Navy and the Houthis.

safari red sea

All the Houthi-US Navy incidents in the Middle East (that we know of)

A non-exhaustive, running list of houthi attacks in the middle east and the u.s. strikes back at them..

Compared to the month prior , the Navy reportedly engaged this month with a larger number of anti-ship ballistic missiles and air drones, but fewer surface drones and no reported land attack cruise missiles.

On Wednesday and Thursday, an unidentified Navy warship took out four Houthi air attack drones each day that had the American vessels in their sights, according to U.S. Central Command.

Navy leaders have noted how the Red Sea battles are the first time that anti-ship ballistic missiles have been used in conflict.

As of the end of March, U.S. and coalition forces destroyed, or tracked the firing, or the intent to launch, of at least 30 anti-ship ballistic missiles, six anti-ship cruise missiles, 10 surface drones, 72 air drones, one underwater drone, six weapon storage containers and 41 other surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles, according to a tally of incidents announced by CENTCOM, as well as reporting by Military Times and The Associated Press.

These were ordnance that the Houthis launched or were prepared to fire.

This past month also saw the first fatal strike by the Houthis in their campaign of assaults, which they have tied to the ongoing conflict occurring in Gaza despite many of the targeted ships possessing no connection to Israel or the United States. On March 6, the Iran-backed group launched an anti-ship ballistic missile from Yemen at a Liberian-owned bulk carrier in the Gulf of Aden, killing three of its crew members and injuring several others.

“These reckless attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis have not only disrupted global trade and commerce but also taken the lives of international seafarers simply doing their jobs,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a briefing .

March also saw the first Houthi attack on a Chinese oil tanker, in which CENTCOM said a ballistic missile fired toward the ship caused it to suffer damage.

“I can’t say that they knew or didn’t know that that was a Chinese ship or flagged. What I can say is that we saw very publicly that they’ve said that they were not going to attack PRC or Russian ships and yet, they did,” Department of Defense deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said during a Pentagon briefing earlier this month.

As the U.S. attempts to deter further Houthi aggression, clashes also continue at home over President Joe Biden’s authority to continue the military campaign against the Houthis without more say from Congress, The Associated Press reported .

Meanwhile, the Department of the Treasury recently announced sanctions against a Houthi financial facilitator.
