Carpool Cool! 1959 Pontiac Safari Wagon

Old station wagons continue to grace the webpages of Barn Finds but today’s discovery of a 1959 Pontiac Safari is the first that I have encountered that isn’t a two-door Nomadesque version. It’s pretty outstanding if for no other reason than all of the typical late fifties GM Motorama style chrome and stainless trim. Found by Pat L. in Portland, Oregon, this Safari is available, here on craigslist for $27,500 “or close to it”.

The Safari came in both Bonneville and Catalina trim in ’59 and this example is the lower level Catalina but from its exterior presentation, it doesn’t look like lower-level anything. The chrome and that previously mentioned trim still look strong – it’s all intact and still has some shine. Unfortunately, the finish, at least on the hood and front clip, is starting to fail – no surprise if it’s original. The color, which looks like Berkshire Green, was a big hit on ’59 Pontiacs and I have seen many finished in that shade including on a high school friend’s ’59 four-door sedan from many years ago. Beyond the fade, and a few scratches, the body of this Safari is solid, there is no sign of rust which is a common affliction with GM cars (practically every manufacturer’s cars) of this era. Gotta love those curb-feelers, I don’t think I have encountered one of those in a very long time.

The seller states that the engine in this Safari wagon has a four-barrel carburetor so I’ll go with the assumptions that it’s a 300 gross HP, 389 CI V8. That non-stock, dual inlet air cleaner is impressive looking and if it is genuine, it’s valuable. An automatic transmission means a Hydramatic but unfortunately, there is no word regarding this Safari’s operational capabilities. This one still runs on generator power and that piece appears to be a recent swap.

The interior is listed as “new” and it is spectacular appearing. And I mean all of, the seats, dash, instrument panel, side panels, and the cargo area, nothing is out of place. To redo that much interior, in what is today a fairly obscure car, must have consumed a significant investment. Also mentioned is the existence of a power rear window, a nice option. Most of our family wagons’ rear glass had to be manually cranked from outside – lots of fun in the rain. Note the new center console with drink holders!

Taken in the entire context of this Safari station wagon, it looks as if it needs nothing. It could technically use a paint job, but that’s really not necessary and the exterior look may be intentional. This is a car that we would have ignored years ago, and maybe even regretted being seen in it if it were our family hauler; my, how times have changed. I thought, initially, that the price was outsized, but then I got a look at that fabulous interior and that’s probably driving some of the ask.  What do you think, priced right or not quite?

While I can’t be the judge on the asking price one has to ask what the market is willing to pay for what I consider a special piece of automotive history. I have really grown to appreciate the bold and outrageous lines of the late 50’s classics. This is definitely one of my favorites and another car that really caught my attention is the 58 Rambler cross country wagon. Back in the 50’s Pontiac’s image was a boring car for old people and GM brought in Bunkie Knudsen to put life back into the brand. This car definitely benefits from his vision. Realistically you are 8-10K away from a refurbished driver with paint being a large portion of that. Beyond that this one is going to make someone a happy camper to own.

Ha My parents had a 1959 Rambler Cross Country Wagon. When with my dad to an “estate sale”. There were two wagons there. A fancy Buick with a big V8 and lots of options and this plain Jane white Rambler with a straight six. My dad would never spring for that fancy of car so the Rambler was purchased. It was the car I learned to drive in. Push button automatic. I could rev it up in neutral then push drive and I could get a little squeal from the tires. It was bulletproof and survived my abuse. We had that car forever. First car we had with A/C, which was a blessing living in the Arizona Desert

Too pretty not to paint, show, and most importantly cruise the wheels off it.

Very unique, very cool, and unusual. I can’t remember the last time I saw one of these, if I ever did. Certainly would be the talk of the car shows.

It’s definitely a cool piece. If you look closely at the CL pics, each body panel/door looks like a slightly different shade of green. I would be wary of that and investigate further.

The front clip is definitely a different shade from the rest of the car. The images are awfully selective as if to avoid. To avoid what? Looking closely at the last image in the ad shows a lot of corrosion below the lower driver’s door hinge. Also I would expect an upscale model like the Bonneville or Catalina to be carpeted. There are always reasons to be skeptical about used vehicles.

The asking price of $27.5k is beyond what Hagerty suggests is the value for a ‘concours’ vehicle.

You are right, the pictures selection looks intentional.

As for the air cleaner, it’s been available as a reproduction from every Chevelle parts supplier for a couple of decades, there is almost no chance it’s original.

Way overpriced for me with the poor paint & new interior. Looks like a quick flip.

Back in the day I wouldn’t have given $5.00 for this. Today? Damn they’re beautiful!

My ’56 Chevy, bought new by my father, was turquoise and white. The doors were painted turquoise first, and the white part was painted over the turquoise. In my teenaged fervor to keep it looking fine, my polishing wore right through the white over paint on one of the doors. And so, one might be suspicious of different shades of color on different body panels, one might also be aware that GM did not always do it right in the first place.

Up for sale is a great condition 1967 Catalina Station Wagon. This car spent its entire life in the high planes desert of Loveland Colorado where it rested in a garage away from the sun. This Poncho was originally purchased from Nick Davidson Inc in Loveland Co (Now Davidson-Gebhart) back on 6/27/67 by the owner that I purchased it from who also lived in Loveland Co. I have photos of the original title from 1967, current title is clear and in my name now. This car has not been registered since 1991 and was properly stored since that time. The more you look at the car, the more amazed you will be at the condition. The bottoms of the doors are perfect, the tail gate is excellent and the underside is as good as you will find for a 48 year old car. In fact, this car was being put together almost exactly 48 years ago at this time. The date code on the Alternator is 7D12 (April 12 1967) The carb is dated E7 (May 1967) The heads are dated E237 and E247 (May 23 & 24 1967) The invoice date on the PHS is June 7th of 1967. You will find that all the weather striping is in great condition and very soft as well as the dash, door panels, seats and most all of this car. I see a lot of cars that sell and need so much work, but to be honest this one does not "need" anything. This car was certainly not kept in a vacuum for its life, it was driven and loved. It has some chips, scratches, a dent on the left quarter/dog leg area (photos in the photo bucket file) but none of it is so bad that I would do a repaint considering the originality of the car. This is not a perfect car, but could be on of the nicest original 67 wagons out there and honestly the minor defects that it does have simply prove that this is as original as claimed. The engine compartment is original and was not repainted. Notice the paint still on the frame rails and the condition of the brake booster, wiper motor, carb, air cleaner and the heads simply have heat transfer to the paint and are not rusty. Same with the exterior and the interior. The dash pad is soft and no sighs of cracks, the chrome on the dash is perfect, the rally gauges work as well as all the lights and this one still has the paint code fuses and the bare metal pieces under the dash are as clean as I have seen. This car has all 4 T3 headlights and almost all the claims in the engine are still there. You can call it a barn find if you want as this car was put up in 1991 and was taken care of. When I picked up the car, it was empty of gas and was stored away properly. I simply checked it out, added gas, changed the tires and drove it around. This car starts, runs, stops and rides like it should. This Catalina Wagon was ordered with options that were mostly all business. Some of the highlights include the cornering lamps, posi rear, 4bbl 400 engine, CDI (capacitive discharge ignition) pointless ignition, as well as HD aluminum front drums. If you think 8 lugs were rare, try finding a pair of these Pontiac HD aluminum drums. Here are a list of all the options. Radio Pushbutton & Manual Antenna Rear Speaker Air Cleaner Dual Stage HD Insterment Panel Cover Upper Door Edge Guards Mirror - Outside Remote Lamps. Cornering Lamps. We have not had the car long and did not plan to sell, but have decided to push to get my 65 Catalina completed. I figure that if I do not do this now, the 65 will end up taking several more years and I need to prioritize my garage a little better. In the last month I have put on 390 miles on this car, replaced one fuel hose (from the hard line to the pump) replaced spark plugs and wires. (wires are still with the car, spark plugs were not original) replaced the rear view mirror with on that I had, went through several tanks of fuel, had the paint buffed out, cleaned under the hood and the interior. As I said, the car needs nothing, but if I were to keep it longer I would likely clean and detail the underside more and maybe add a 3rd row seat. As with most Pontiacs, this one does drip oil after returning from a drive. Not enough to consider pulling the engine, but about a qtr size after a few days, so very minor. I have had it for a number of years with the hopes of finally getting around to restoring it and adding it to our collection, but there are still a number of cars that we are restoring ahead of it and I don't see it happening for years. The car is all there from what I can see and if you don't see something outside the car it is probably stored inside the car. It needs a complete restoration, so obviously that includes mechanical components and the interior. As with any car auction the reserve is private so any and all emails asking what it is will just be deleted. It is a 56 year old used car sold as is / where is, with no warranties. Some basic answers to some basic questions : Car is stored in FL presently and any and all parts you do not see on the outside of the car are stored inside the car. YES the floors are solid and NO there are no holes anywhere on the car that I have found. The car spent it's life in the rust free and salt free Western US. Since it is not a newly restored car you can assume that there is some form of rust somewhere just like you would find on any 56 year old car. YES the frame is solid - see above. Car was from out west where they do not use salt on the roads, then it was parked and sat not driven for over 40 years. Any rust you see on the paint is just surface flashing from the original sunbaked paint/ primer fading away. The car has been off the road for 40 years, so no, you can't drive it home. No, I haven't tried to start it or drive it. YES I have the title for it. The car needs a COMPLETE restoration however since it is rare, it is well worth the cost.

Very Rare 1958 Pontiac Custom Safari Pontiac Station Wagon. Only around 1800 of these Custom Safari's were made. The exterior trim was upgraded and different than the standard wagons in 58. Excellent candidate for a full restoration to have a car you rarely see! All the trim is present with the exception of the Safari emblems on the front fenders and part of a Safari emblem on the tailgate. Rust in the usual places as seen in the pictures. No rust in the headlight brows. There is a rust hole in the drivers side in the front and a hole in the spare tire carrier in the rear section under the deck panel. I do have the rear seat which is out of the car. It will need redone like the rest of the interior. I have a title, but it is still in the name of the last owner from many years ago, and was never endorsed. I bought the car from his son. Engine is complete but does not turn over. The radiator is missing. A fellow collector I know has most of the parts this car needs and they could possibly be purchased. Original 14" wheels with original hubcaps. Body is real straight overall. Its meant to be raised and lifted at the touch of a button to sit low on display at car shows etc. Also the air ride suspension is a far superior ride quality for comfort. 2. The color panel in the rear seat back is on the wrong side? Since the color panel on the front seat back is on the left side of the car, shouldn't the panel in the back seat be on the right side?: On the seat panel we were not trying to reproduce the factory upholstery job. We only wanted to look at the original for inspiration. The entire car is meant to be a custom car so I took some liberties in the design. I intentionally wanted the upholstery design to be asymetrical. The original design also wasnt stitched in three colors and paterns but I thought it would make a great design. 3. Does the carpet have the silver threads woven into it like the original carpet did?: No silver thread on the carpet. Although I do like the original carpet I wanted the floor to "disappear". I felt like the silver threads tend to make the passenger notice the carpet too much. 4. Do you have any pictures of the dash? How are the add-on air conditioner control installed? Like the factory original "slide buttons", or just some switches bolted to the bottom of the dash? The controls are switches bolted into the design of the dash to match. Im attaching an additional picture of the dash to show the A/C controls. With the Vintage Air system there were new custom controls to be added and the original slide controls would not work. The slide controls have been removed and a metal panel fabricated to the shape of the dash. Welded in and body worked to fit seamlessly. The Vintage Air controls fit into the original chrome scheme seamlessly. 5. Do you have any pictures of the bottom of the car?: I dont currently have any pics under the car. Although im happy to try and get some if you like. Everything is extremely clean and painted black. 6. Does the car have the factory spare tire mount? If so, where is it? Under the floor? On the side? Under the car?: Yes it does have a hide-away panel for the spare tire. In the back of the wagon there is a hidden compartment that opens and the spare fits vertically in that pocket. 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari 2 Door Station Wagon Tri-Power Up for auction is a nice 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Custom Safari 2 Door Station Wagon. There were only 1292 of these wagons produced in 1957 the last year for this 2 door Nomad type body, and very few have survived making these cars quite rare. This car is not a show car but a very nice driver plus car. It was restored years ago and remains in nice condition. There is no visible rust or rot, this car spent a good deal of it's life on the west coast.
