🇸🇪 sweden victory clinches 2022-23 euro hockey tour title.

euro hockey tour 2023 results

Tre Kronor started the 2022-23 season strong, losing just once at November’s Karjala Tournament to Finland in the tournament finale, while going undefeated at December’s inaugural Swiss Ice Hockey Games, and losing just one contest on home ice at February’s Beijer Hockey Games in Malmö, a 2-1 overtime loss to Czechia. They would recapture the IHLC in the Beijer finale against Finland on 12 February , then sweeping both Denmark and Norway , and splitting a series against Finland, in Euro Hockey Challenge action to bring the IHLC to the Czech Hockey Games.

Hosting the tournament opener in Gothenburg before joining the rest of the tournament in Brno, Czechia, it was recent NHL call-up Lucas Raymond who struck twice for Tre Kronor (in his national team debut), and a 19-save shutout from Lars Johansson, that sealed the 3-0 win over the Eisgenossen , and put Sweden at 22 points in the table, with Czechia and Finland each sitting at 15 points, only able to gain a maximum of 21 at this point.

This marks Sweden’s sixth Tour championship, and second consecutive, following 2022’s truncated schedule when Russia was kicked off the Tour after their invasion of Ukraine following the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Sweden will now look to finish a perfect 2-0 in Brno, with tilts against Czechia and Finland, with the hopes of carrying that momentum, and the IHLC, into the 2023 World Championships, where they will be competing in Tampere, opening their tournament on 12 May against Germany .

Euro Hockey Tour - a tournament of selected teams

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament available only to the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden national men's teams. The league was founded in 1996, and most teams use the competition as preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympic Games. The EHT consists of four tournaments: the Karjala Tournament in Finland, the Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland, the Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden, and the Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic. In the Euro Hockey Tour, there are 4 teams, and the number of matches in one tournament is 6 matches, totaling 24 matches.

Each team is awarded 3 points for a win in regulation time, 2 points for a win in overtime or after a shootout, 1 point for a loss in overtime or after a shootout, and 0 points for a loss in regulation time. When points are equal, the results of meetings between teams with the same number of points are first considered, then the difference in goals scored and conceded among the tied teams in the four tournaments is considered.

Best Euro Hockey Tour Team

As of 2023, Finland has won the Euro Hockey Tour 7 times, making it one of the most successful teams in the tournament's history. Finland is followed by Sweden with 5 wins and the Czech Republic with 3 wins, while Switzerland has not won the tournament yet.

When is the next tournament?

The next Euro Hockey Tour Carjala Cup tournament will take place from 9 to 12 November 2023. The matches will be played in Tampere, Finland, and will feature teams from Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

How to get on the Euro Hockey Tour?

Participation in the Euro Hockey Tour is only open to national men's teams from the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden. Other teams cannot participate in this tournament. This tournament does not grant promotion to any league.

Best players and prize money

The Euro Hockey Tour all-time top ice-hockey scorer per season is Johan Davidsson, who holds the record for the most points scored, amassing 14 points for Sweden in the season 2006-2007.

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is €50,000, with second place receiving €30,000, third place €25,000, and fourth place €15,000. The EHT season winner receives an additional €75,000, the second place team receives €30,000, and the third place team receives €15,000.

  • Euro Hockey Tour

The Euro Hockey Tour (EHT) is an annual ice hockey tournament only open to the national men's teams of the Czech Republic , Finland , Switzerland and Sweden . Most of the teams use the competition as a preparation for the upcoming World Championships or Olympics , allowing less experienced players to collect valuable ice time in their national colours.

Playing format

Euro Hockey Tour consists of four tournaments:

  • Karjala Tournament in Finland
  • Swiss Ice Hockey Games in Switzerland , replacing the Channel One Cup in Russia following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • Sweden Hockey Games in Sweden
  • Czech Hockey Games in the Czech Republic

Each team plays three games in each of the tournaments, giving a total of twelve games per team. After the four tournaments have finished, the teams are seeded according to their respective combined point total from all four tournaments.

In each tournament, five games are played in the host city, and one game in another participating country. For example, in the 2007 edition of Karjala Tournament, the game between Sweden and Russia was played in Jönköping, Sweden, rather than in Finland, who host the Karjala Cup. Every country is assigned one home game and one away game in those games.

Each team is given three points for a regulation-time win, two points for an overtime or shootout win, one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. In the four tournaments, if two or more teams end with the same number of points, they are seeded based on head-to-head results in games against the tied teams. In the EHT standings however, two or more teams tied in points are seeded based on the better goal difference.

Prize money

The prize money for the winner of each tournament is € 50,000 while the second seed gets €30,000, the third seed gets €25,000, and the fourth seed gets €15,000. The EHT season winner receives another €75,000, the team finishing second gets €30,000, and the team finishing third gets €15,000. [1]

Finals in previous years

Medal games were not played until the 2003–04 season. Before that, place order was determined by the tournament standings. The seasons 2003–04, 2004–05 and 2006–07 used a format where the first-placed and second-placed teams played a home-and-home two-game series for the EHT gold and silver medals, while the third-placed and fourth-placed teams played two games for the bronze. In 2005–06, the championship was determined by a single game played at the home of the first-place team. Since 2007–08, no EHT finals have been played.

Participating teams

Only four European teams compete in EHT:

EuroHockey Championships 2023: Netherlands win back-to-back men's title

Paris 2024

The Oranje fought off a persistent England side with a 2-1 victory to claim a Dutch double following in the women's team's win the day before. The nether to obtain an Olympic quota for Paris 2024.

Derck de Vilder

The Netherlands claimed back-to-back titles beating England 2-1 in the men’s final at the EuroHockey Championships 2023 in Mönchengladbach, Germany on 27 August (Sunday).

The victory delivered a second consecutive Dutch double for the hockey dynamo following the women's side’s 3-1 rout of Belgium the day before. The Dutch obtained a quota place for their National Olympic Committee (NOC) in Paris 2024.

NOCs have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation in Paris 2024 depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation. As hosts of Paris 2024, France has already secured a spot in the men’s and women’s competitions at the next Olympic Games.

The Netherlands men’s side won their seventh EuroHockey gold medal and are now one victory short of becoming the joint all-time winners with Germany.

The Dutch made early inroads in the nail-biting affair, with Derck de Vilder pouncing on the half chance in the circle to put his side in front nine minutes into the encounter.

The Oranje did not have it all their way with the English, who reached the final for the first time since 2009, threatening to enforce the stalemate.

The sides went into the half-time break with the Dutch holding onto their slim one-goal lead before thunder paused proceedings by 30 minutes.

The Dutch doubled their score shortly after the restart, with Duco Telgenkamp finishing a superb set piece to give his side a commanding lead.

Time was running out on England’s chances of winning their second Euros title as the teams headed into the fourth and final quarter. England finally breached the Netherlands’ defences in the 47th minute courtesy of a Sam Ward goal to launch their fightback in earnest.

With four minutes left on the clock, England looked like they equalised before the Dutch asked for a video referral for dangerous play. The Dutch succeeded with the referral, denying England a foot in the door. England was given two consecutive penalty strokes, with Maurits Visser keeping both out to preserve the status quo and secure the title.

Earlier, Belgium defeated hosts Germany 2-0 in the bronze-medal match landing on the podium at the third consecutive Euros tournament.

2024 Valspar Championship leaderboard, scores: Stewart Cink tied for Round 2 lead; Justin Thomas one off pace

Justin thomas is chasing and currently the favorite to win the event.

Valspar Championship - Round Two

An unlikely co-leader rose to the top of the board at a Valspar Championship complete with Jordan Spieth adventures (more on that below), Justin Thomas ups and downs, and one of the more surprising missed cuts on the PGA Tour so far this season.

After 36 holes, 50-year-old Stewart Cink co-leads the event a 6 under after shooting a 4-under 67. He leads the field in approach play after two days and is looking for his first win on the PGA Tour since the 2021 RBC Heritage.

He'll have a few problems in the form a five-way tie at the top, as well as a bevy of younger horses just behind him, but a 50-year-old Cink winning the week after the Players Championship would be one of the more shocking (and compelling) golf stories of 2024 to date.

Let's dive in on Friday's second round and what to expect over the next few days.

The leaders

T1. Stewart Cink, Kevin Streelman, Chandler Phillips, Brendon Todd, Mackenzie Hughes (-6)

What a crew this is. Cink was actually 7 under with seven holes left in his day and looked like he might run it to 8 under or better, but he played the last seven in 1 over, including a bogey at the last that kept him from taking the outright lead. Still, this is a stunner.

Cink has two top 10s in his last four starts ... but both of them were on PGA Tour Champions. He only has one top 10 on the PGA Tour -- a T7 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship -- since the start of the 2022-23 season. In a season of strange longshots winning PGA Tour tournaments, Cink might honestly be the strangest long shot that could do it.

His approach play has been exceptional, though. Even though his driver has been shaky (mostly because he's 133rd in the field in distance off the tee), he's crushing greens and is gaining nearly 3.0 strokes per round on approach shots alone. If that continues, we might actually get a 50-year-old champion this week at the Valspar.

"It feels great," said Cink. "Being in contention feels the same way no matter where you are, to be honest. Obviously, the field is a little different here at Valspar than it was the last time I teed it up at Cologuard in Tucson on the PGA Tour Champions. But it still feels the same, and I didn't have a very good finish there. I was ... to say in contention would be like understating it. I should have won the tournament, and I didn't finish it off. I had a little bit of a meltdown.

"So I'm just thrilled to be right back at the top of the leaderboard to test myself out again this week, because that's really what you want at the start of the year," he continued. "You want to get in contention as much as possible and let the chips fall. You start trying to control too many things out there, it doesn't work out in your favor. So, I get another chance to learn some really great lessons and maybe some hard lessons this week again."

Other contenders

T6. Ben Martin, Keith Mitchell, Lucas Glover, Peter Malnati, Seamus Power, Scott Stallings, Adam Svensson, Justin Thomas (-5)

Obviously, J.T. is the big name here at the 5-under group. He got it all the way to 7 under as well before dropping two shots at the par-3 13th hole on a water ball. Other than that shot -- which came up 25 yards short of the hole and in the water -- he's been hitting it quite well this week (he still gained strokes on approach play on Friday) and is poised to win his first event since the 2022 PGA Championship.

"Yeah, I think my finish on 18 kind of sums it up," said Thomas, who made bogey at the last to fall out of a tie for first. "I truly just feel like I completely lost my concentration and what was going on and just hit a terrible iron shot there.

"Yeah, it was weird. I mean, I think we got very lucky with the weather," he continued. "I know those guys had a lot of wind this morning, we had some this afternoon, it just was very gusty and it made that back nine very challenging. But, yeah, I scrambled really well and I hit a lot of really, really quality golf shots. I picked a bad time to have the worst shot of the tournament so far, but I'm in a great place with two days left."

Presumably, the "worst shot of the tournament" was a reference to that shot on No. 13 that came up well short of the pin and the green. But J.T. scrambled well at other times and held a 2-under round together, in the instance below with one of the great flop shots you'll see.

It doesn't get much better than this. @JustinThomas34 showing off some brilliant touch around the greens. pic.twitter.com/8tuFnOjyLX — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 22, 2024

Sam Burns MC

Of course I picked Sam Burns in my one-and done this week, and of course he misses his first cut of the year at a place where he has traditionally thrived (and won multiple times). Of course. Burns' success so far this year had been terrific ... until this week.

Jordan Spieth adventures

🤌🤌🤌 pic.twitter.com/dCMlJPm1CH — Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) March 22, 2024

Spieth also missed the cut after a wild second day that included some interesting exploration. He shot 74 when even 73 would have helped him play the weekend. It certainly did not help him that the morning wave experienced a golf course that played a shot more difficult than it did in the afternoon.
