Top Five Travel-Sharing Websites

apotripping.jpg

Spring is in full swing, and soon cool breezes will give way to the heat of summer days. This is the time when many people start making future travel plans .

Resorts and hotels offer lots of amenities, but they're sterile, expensive, and usually only show you the brochure-friendly version of what a destination has to offer.

Vacations are a great way to test out the world of collaborative consumption while saving money and meeting great people along the way. Traveling the peer to peer way enables you to create unique experiences and connect with local folk for true cultural exchange. It's more fun.

Instead of merely snapping pictures for a few days, peer to peer travel allows you to slow down and appreciate the diversity of a new place in a respectful way. Instead of bringing home cheap souveniers, you're likely to return home with vivid memories and permanent, meaningful friendships that help expand the global community of sharing.

Here are five of the most interesting and successful sites to help you to plan, connect, and share your vacation experience:

AirBnB – (Best for individuals, couples, professionals with a moderate to high budget)

AirBnB connects people who have space to spare with those who are looking for a place to stay, all over the world. Accomodations range from studio apartments in NYC , to mushroom dome cabins in California , to a private yacht in Sausalito . All for a fraction of the price that you'd pay at a hotel or through a vacation rental service. Watch the video below and read how Shareable uses AirBnB for staff retreats .

CouchSurfing (Best for individuals, couples and friends with a low budget)

CouchSurfing is an international non-profit network that connects travelers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Everyone knows the "tourist attractions" are never the most interesting or exciting things to experience in a new place. CouchSurfing members share hospitality with one another. These exchanges are a uniquely rich form of cultural interaction. Hosts have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world without leaving home. "Surfers," are able to participate in the local life of the places they visit. Host profiles on this site are VERY detailed, so that you can be prepared for the people and couch/futon/floor mat you'll be staying with. Unlike AirBnB, CouchSurfing accomadations completely free.

travel sharing websites

Tripping (Best for individuals, couples, and friends with a low budget)

Tripping enables you to connect safely with locals who will introduce you to their towns, their cultures, their lives and their friends. This service is very similar to Couch Surfing, in that it accepts both hosts and Trippers, and is completely free. One thing Tripping has that many services don't are Networks . These groups allow travelers with similar purpose or interests to share information, experiences, and news about events. This site also offers the TripSafe program , including a video validation service , through which host names and addresses are visually confirmed by Tripping staff before they can accept Trippers. (Photo: Trippers in NYC)

Crashpadder (Best for individuals, couples, friends, families, & professionals with a moderate to high budget)

If you're tired of the stark, inpersonal feel of hotels and hostels, Crashpadder will be a welcome relief. Accomodations offered on Crashpadder are on average 83 percent cheaper than the equivalent hotel and have a carbon footprint that is 80 percent smaller than a hotel stay…not to mention they come with a free host who can give you coffee and insider tips about things to see and do. One of the coolest features of Crashpadder is their trip planning tool. This location-based search tool allows both travelers and guests to browse options in their area. Travelers can put up a "trip wanted" listing letting hosts know that they're looking for a room. Hosts can then browse these listings and reach out to the most interesting or compelling profiles.

BONUS! If you're looking for a way to make some extra money, love where you live , and have room to spare, many of these sites also allow you to offer your services as a host.

Update 4/26/11 : Yikes! Looks like we forgot how to count. There are only four sites listed above, and the title of this post clearly promises five. To make up for the goof, here are three more travel-sharing sites suggested by our readers.

iloho.com – Share fantastic travel advice and plan trips with a network of travel writers across the world.

Triptrotting.com – An exclusive community for university students, alums and young professionals that connects Triptrotters and hosts using a unique matching algorithm.

gtrot.com – A Facebook app that allows you to browse friends’ trips, see where everyone’s going this summer, exchange tips, add details like photos, check-ins, and reviews to your trip, and push your plans out to Facebook and Twitter.

Have you ever used one of these sites or something similar to plan a trip? Tell us about your experience in the comments!

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

How to Use the Sharing Economy to Travel on a Budget

A group of of travelers standing in a circle hugging while traveling abroad

In the fifteen years that I’ve been traveling , the Internet has revolutionized travel. While not always for the better , there is no question that it has allowed people to share, connect, and collaborate in ways that haven’t been possible.

One of these ways is through the “sharing economy,” a peer-to-peer economic system where people connect with others to trade goods and services, usually for nominal fees. At its core, the idea is to share resources that one person has with others who need it, making it a win-win for both sides.

For budget travelers, this change has led to a plethora of new money-saving and community-building apps and platforms that have made travel even more affordable and accessible. It’s never been easier to connect with locals, get off the tourist travel, and experience the local pace of life.

To help you save money and connect with locals and travelers alike, here are the best sharing economy platforms for travelers.

Table of Contents

Hospitality Networks

House and pet sitting, volunteering/work exchanges, apartment rentals and paid accommodation, meal sharing, ride hailing apps, car sharing.

A group of Couchsurfers having a picnic together

Founded in 2004, this was one of the first sharing economy platforms to change the way people travel. Couchsurfing connects travelers with locals who are willing to give them a free place to stay (couch, room, floor, etc.). In addition to accommodation, travelers get a local perspective on a destination. It’s meant to be used as a form of cultural exchange and is used by travelers of all ages (and families too!).

Couchsurfing popularized hospitality networks and, with millions of members all around the world, it’s easy to use and find hosts pretty much anywhere. And, if you don’t want to stay with locals, you can use the Hangouts function of the app to find locals and travelers who want to meet up for coffee, a meal, a visit to a museum, or other fun activities.

However, since Couchsurfing started charging for access, it’s not as widely used as it used to be. It’s still worth checking out but it’s harder to find hosts. Thankfully, there is more than just Couchsurfing out there too. Other hospitality exchanges worth checking out are:

  • Warm Showers (for cyclists)
  • Travel Ladies (for women)
  • Host a Sister (for women)
  • Welcome to My Garden (free camping in people’s backyards)

A cat and a dog looking out a glass door

On the other side of the coin, more and more travelers are looking to travel slowly. There are also tons of digital nomads out there who need long-term bases to work from as well. House sitting and pet sitting websites like Trusted Housesitters have done an amazing job at connecting these two demographics.

The premise of house sitting is that no money changes hands. Pet owners get free pet care by getting reliable sitters to look after their furry family members while they travel. In return, travelers get a free place to stay in exchange for providing home and pet care.

Much like Airbnb, there are profiles, ratings, and reviews to ensure the platform is safe for everyone involved.

I know bloggers who travel exclusively via house sitting , cutting their travel costs by as much as 30% a year! If you’re looking for a unique and fulfilling way to travel slow, try pet sitting. Because who doesn’t want to spend their time with cute animals?

Trusted Housesitters is my go-to suggestion for people looking to get started. They’re the best out there, with the biggest number of pet sitting opportunities.

Other house and pet sitting websites you can use are:

  • HouseCarers
  • Mind My House
  • Housesit Match
  • Rover (more for paid local house and pet sitting)

Someone planting on an urban farm

Positions are usually at least a week long and can be up to a couple of months (or longer). There is a ton of variety in the lengths of time as well in the positions available. You can find opportunities in pretty much every country and city in the world too.

Worldpackers is the best platform for starting your search. You simply pay to sign up (most work exchange websites charge a nominal fee) and then you’ll get access to their database. You can search for opportunities, read reviews, and contact hosts directly to plan your next exchange.

If you’re on a budget and want to extend your travels, this is one of the best ways to boost your time abroad.

If you want to sign up for Worldpackers, you can get $10 USD off by clicking here .

Other great work exchange resources are:

An open concept apartment rental with lots of light coming through the large windows

It’s the best middle ground between hostels and hotels. I think Airbnb offers the most robust inventory for finding a spot in someone’s house, and I prefer them the most.

That said, Airbnb is far from perfect. It’s debatable whether Airbnb is even part of the sharing economy anymore. There are entire companies whose entire business model is buying properties in order to rent them out on Airbnb, and cities around the globe are cracking down on Airbnb listings for reducing the housing stock for locals.

While Airbnb has gotten away from its original intent, when done right, you’ll have a local host to answer your questions and a kitchen to prepare meals.

However, it’s important to always compare rental sites because, unlike hotel sites where properties appear over multiple websites, listings are at the owner’s discretion and some owners list their property on only one site.

Similar services to Airbnb include:

  • Homestay (the most like what Airbnb used to be)
  • Campspace (paid camping spaces in people’s backyards)
  • Hipcamp (paid camping on private land)

A group of travelers using the sharing economy to have a meal together

You can pick from a variety of meals in each destination with each meal uniquely designed and priced (like Airbnb, hosts choose their own prices). Since each cook has their own specialties, you can find a ton of variety on this platform. The dinner parties are intimate, insightful, and are a unique opportunity to do something different, pick a local’s brain, and make new friends.

Similar services include:

  • Traveling Spoon
  • With Locals (food tours)

A man and a woman in the front seat of a car

It’s a popular option in Europe and, while usually not as cheap as the bus, it’s often much faster (and more comfortable).

Drivers are vetted and verified and it’s a much better way to get out of stuffy trains and buses, meet interesting characters, and take a mini-road trip. It’s one of my preferred methods of travel.

The biggest player in this space is BlaBlaCar , which is huge around Europe and a couple other parts of the world (like India , Turkey , Mexico , and Brazil ).

If you’re traveling on a budget and want to have a more memorable experience, try a rideshare. It will save you money, time, and you’ll have a much more interesting experience!

Some other good ridesharing companies:

  • Liftshare (based in the UK)
  • Gumtree (UK/Australia/NZ)
  • Kangaride (Canada)
  • CarpoolWorld (Global)
  • Share Your Ride (Global)
  • Ridesharing.com (U.S. and Canada)

Two friends in a car together starting a road trip

With these apps, you can get a ride to show up, right where you stand, within minutes. Ride hailing apps used to be universally cheaper than local taxis, and in most places they still are, though by a lesser margin than in the past.

Uber is the main option, available around the world. Lyft is the other option, though it’s only available in the U.S. and Canada. Uber is usually a little bit more expensive than Lyft but the cars are nicer and the service a little more professional.

Other apps that replace taxis are:

  • Gojek (Southeast Asia)
  • Gett (UK, Israel, Russia)
  • FreeNow (Europe)
  • Bolt (Global)
  • Cabify (Spain and Latin America)

A RV drives through a winding road through a picturesque mountainous landscape

Prices vary greatly, from cheaper, the same as, or even more expensive than your traditional rental, depending on the car you choose. But, you’ll have much more variety if you want to rent a unique vehicle like a Tesla or a classic convertible. Getaround is another similar option.

If you are heading out on a longer trip, check out RVShare . It’s like Airbnb but for RVs. There are tons of vehicles for rent of all different makes and sizes. It’s the best platform for RV rentals out there.

The rise of “the sharing economy” has made it so much easier for travelers around the world to connect with each other — and save money in the process.

But more than just saving money, these platforms allow better access to destinations, promote new interactions, offer unique opportunities, and create a nuanced and intimate travel experience.

On your next trip, be sure to give the sharing economy a try. You’ll learn much more about the culture and destination, save money, and have a much more memorable experience.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

Roadtrippers

For individuals who share driving responsibilities when traveling, Roadtrippers is fantastic. With the help of this app, you can work with family and friends to choose the ideal route. It also offers recommendations for rest stations and surrounding sights. The program also predicts the amount of time it will take to drive each leg of the journey, allowing you to plan the optimum spots to stop and switch drivers so nobody is doing the majority of the driving.

3. BlaBlaCar

3. BlaBlaCar

The carpooling service BlaBlaCar was created to reduce traffic overall and share petrol costs with other prospective passengers.

It is simpler for commuters to find a ride with a qualified and reliable driver thanks to this carpooling app, which is economical and environmentally friendly.

Users may link their social media accounts to their BlaBlaCar profiles and score their interactions with drivers anonymously, with a focus on driving ability and safety.

SRIDE

The purpose of the service is to pair up drivers and passengers that are traveling on the same general route. This is one of the safest applications which guarantees your protection and safe communication. To assure you receive the finest service possible, each sRide driver has their background checked, and driver reviews are carefully monitored. In order to start a discussion in the sRide community and offer input for other users, each rider must write a review of their driver. Additionally created in 2014, sRide aims to give commuters an affordable mode of transportation while reducing pollution.

twowego

This is one of the amazing and advanced programs in the field of Trip Sharing. This software has a chat feature that allows users to connect with one another or in a group to discover compatible carpool mates.

While ride-sharing hasn’t yet taken off, TwoGo isn’t discouraged and is actively providing dependable carpooling services in select regions of the country.

The 15 Best travel websites that will make your life easier

brooke saward

These 15 travel websites will make booking and planning travel a whole lot easier! Be sure to bookmark your favourites to help with your travel plans on your next trip!

Gogobot is difficult to describe but essential to many travellers’ successful trips. It’s a social sharing website where you can create a trip itinerary based on reviews you browse and then add your own reviews upon your return. In this light it sounds a bit like TripAdvisor (also featured in this list), but the real gem of Gogobot is the advice you’ll get from other users when you post a specific question.

gogobot.com

It is perhaps unsurprising to see the mother of all fare-compare search engines on this list given I was awarded travel blog of the year by them this year. But I can honestly say in an unbiased opinion, Skyscanner is the most user-friendly fare compare search engine on the web – I have been using it for years and swear by it as one of the best travel websites out there!

skyscanner.net

The Man in Seat 61

If you don’t like flying, this site is for you. Mark Smith (creator of Man in Seat 61) gives you all the information you need to reach your desired destination without leaving solid ground.

For all the travel geeks and die hard travel fans, this one is thrown in for good measure. You can read up about everything from flight attendant uniforms through to infographics and breaking news.

Rome 2 Rio WOW FAVE!

I’ve been using Rome 2 Rio for the past couple years and will never book a trip without it. You simply typie in your ‘point A’ and your ‘point B’ and the search engine will give you all your alternative routes to get there – planes, trains, cars, you name it. It will also tell you which is the quickest route and which is the cheapest.

rome2rio.com

Lastminute.com

This site allows you to book five star hotels for three star prices – how could I not include it in the list!? You won’t find out the name of the hotel until you have paid and booked, but its’ many users claim it never lets them down.

lastminute.com

TripAdvisor

So long as you take everything you read with a grain of salt, there is a great value in this website. Just remember that most of the really bad reviews are often fuelled with spite or fake – and the really good reviews can sometimes lead to disappointment when you arrive. It’s somewhat reliable, but with its ranking system you might miss out on a really great small boutique hotel based on # of rooms and guests in relation to the bigger hotels.

tripadvisor.co.uk

You’re almost always going to need to convert currency – so go for the most accurate – XE.

Airlinemeals.net

If you’ve got plenty of time to spare and intrigue gets the better of you, head over to this website to see what’s for dinner. This site has been going since 2001 and now has over 25,000 food photos from over 600 airlines.

airlinemeals.net

If you’re not into the social networking phase and craze but want to share your travel photos with friends on the web, this is the way to do it. Simple upload your photos, create a folder, and share the link with your friends via email. It’s a great way to be more selective with who views your travel photos.

dropbox.com

CDC Travel Health

If you want a travel health website that seems to have all the answers, this is a great way to go. Here you can find up-to-date health concerns and vaccination information for wherever you’re travelling to. Certainly essential reading, even if it’s nowhere near as fun as the others that made the list.

cdc.gov/travel

If you’re looking for tours and activities in a city you’re visiting but not sure where to start, Viator is a great place to get you going. Here you can find the most popular tours and attractions in your city of choice as well as pre-booked shuttles and private drivers. Just know that it is often a little bit more expensive to book on here than it is directly, so consider doing your research on the site and searching the particular activity or tour in google to find a website for direct bookings.

The Festival Calendar

This site is great for travellers heading to the UK and Europe in the summer season, who want to know what’s going on. It has all the big names listed but also many smaller festivals you wouldn’t have otherwise heard of.

thefestivalcalendar.co.uk

Airbnb is changing the way we travel – despite having faced legal issues in the past few months. But for now the website is still going great and offers a chance for you to feel like a local by booking a private room or apartment with a local in their city. The debate is that they’re taking too much business away from hotels and essentially allowing landlords an opportunity to run ‘illegal hotels’ and avoid taxes – so it will be interesting to see what happens to the website and laws around this in the upcoming months. For now, it’s all systems go.

World of Wanderlust

What would this list be without a little shameless self promotion for one of the leading travel blogs on the internet this year!? Clearly being here you have heard of it, but be sure to tell your friends and family before their travels so they too can come and find personalised reviews and inspiration for their next trip.

worldofwanderlust.com

Over to you! What travel website do you swear by that didn’t make the list?

Carpool Help Centre

How do i book a carpool ride.

You can book a carpool ride on our mobile app, or on blablacar.com. Simply search for your destination, choose the date you want to travel and pick the carpool that suits you best! Some rides can be booked instantly, while other rides require manual approval from the driver. Either way, booking a carpool ride is fast, simple and easy.

How do I publish a carpool ride?

Offering a carpool ride on BlaBlaCar is easy. To publish your ride, use our mobile app or blablacar.com. Indicate your departure and arrival points, the date and time of your departure, how many passengers you can take and the price per seat. You’ll also need to choose how you want to accept bookings (either automatically or manually), and you have the option of adding any important details you think your passengers should know about. Then tap ‘Publish ride’ and you’re done!

How do I cancel my carpool ride?

If you have a change of plans, you can always cancel your carpool ride from the ‘Your rides’ section of our app. The sooner you cancel, the better. That way the driver has time to accept new passengers. The amount of your refund will depend on how far in advance you cancel. If you cancel more than 24 hours before departure, for example, you’ll receive a full refund, excluding the service fee.

What are the benefits of travelling by carpool?

There are multiple advantages to carpooling, over other means of transport. Travelling by carpool is usually more affordable, especially for longer distances. Carpooling is also more eco-friendly, as sharing a car means there will be fewer cars on the road, and therefore fewer emissions. Taking a carpool ride is also a safe way to travel in the current times. Because there are only a few people in a car, you have fewer points of contact and there’s less risk than other travel options.

How much does a carpool ride cost?

The costs of a carpool ride can vary greatly, and depend on factors like distance, time of departure, the demand of that ride and more. It is also up to the driver to decide how much to charge per seat, so it’s hard to put an exact price tag on a ride. Check out some of our top carpool destinations to get an idea of price, or start searching for your next carpool ride on blablacar.com.

How do I start carpooling?

Carpooling with BlaBlaCar is super easy, and free! Simply sign up for an account and tell us some basic details about yourself. Once you have a BlaBlaCar account, you can start booking or publishing rides directly on our app or website.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Tuesday. For international flights, Thursday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Kayak’s new AI features will let users double-check flights with a screenshot

Travelers can also ask a chatbot for travel advice..

By Emilia David , a reporter who covers AI. Prior to joining The Verge, she covered the intersection between technology, finance, and the economy.

Stock image of computer chip on an illustration of the human brain.

Kayak launched new AI features that let people ask a chatbot for travel tips and find flights with just a screenshot. This brings Kayak in line with many other travel sites that offer AI services for trip planning and, now, price comparisons.

PriceCheck, one of Kayak’s two new AI features, lets users check if they found the best price just by taking a screenshot of flight information they found somewhere else. Kayak said in a statement that customers can upload a screenshot of any flight, even if they found the flight on their competitors’ websites, and PriceCheck will “search hundreds of sites to see if we can find a better price.”

Matthias Keller, chief scientist and senior vice president of technology at Kayak, said in an email to The Verge that the service uses AI to extract information from screenshots, like schedules and airlines, and searches the internet for cheaper flights utilizing the customer’s parameters.

“It’s used to surface relevant content for the user as well as compelling alternatives,” Keller said. “It is also a way for us to attract new users, including those loyal to a specific airline or program, because Kayak Pricecheck might also find a better price, even within this preferred provider.”

This type of AI is called computer vision , where models can scan a photo or a PDF and extract information like key terms or objects. Google, Microsoft, and Apple have been using computer vision for years to identify faces in your photos to tag them or search for terms in a badly scanned PDF.

Kayak also wants to make it easier for customers to get answers for any travel-related questions. Travelers can prompt the Kayak chatbot, Ask Kayak , if they have any questions about travel planning or are looking to narrow down places to stay or things to do. For example, people can ask the chatbot questions like, “What is the cheapest destination I can fly to this weekend?” or “Give me a hotel under $300 a night in New York City.”

Ask Kayak is currently available to users in the United States, the UK, and Canada but will be rolled out to other territories soon. The company built Ask Kayak with ChatGPT.

Since generative AI services became popular, travel planning was one of the first use cases it was expected to disrupt . Kayak is not the only travel website exploring how generative AI can improve how customers search for flights or hotels. Expedia told The Verge it wants to use more AI features to get more people to begin their travel planning on the site rather than Google.

5 Of The Best Websites For Booking Travel Accommodations

I f you have travel plans coming up, you'll want to reserve your stay well before your departure dates are nearing. In fact, you'll want to do it not too long after you've booked your flight . Delaying this could leave you with limited accommodation options to choose from and have you dealing with steep prices.

The good news is that whether you're looking for a cozy bed and breakfast experience or a stay at a high-end all-inclusive hotel, there are a plethora of travel websites that make it easy to reserve accommodation in a place that suits your exact preferences. While you could always make the booking directly through a hotel's website, using a travel booking website helps you compare your options and check out reviews left by previous customers.

To help you get started, we've put together a list of some of the most preferred accommodation booking websites based on personal experience, user reviews, and the general user-friendliness of the platforms. You'll find a more detailed methodology explaining how we evaluated and selected the websites listed below toward the end of this list.

Read more: How To Speed Up The Internet Connection On Your Android Phone

No stranger to the accommodation booking scene, Airbnb has been offering unique boarding experiences since 2007. What makes Airbnb stand out from other similar platforms is that it allows you to live like a local by booking a room or an entire property in a residential neighborhood. This makes Airbnb accommodations appealing to people who want to experience a destination more authentically.

Searching for a property on Airbnb is fairly straightforward. All you need to do is enter your destination of choice, travel dates, and the number of guests checking in. After you do this, you'll be able to view the relevant listings.

The platform does a good job of showcasing its listings, including a detailed description of the property, pictures to help you understand what the space looks like, and reviews from past guests. While Airbnb, which has listings in around 100,000 cities and towns across the world, is a popular choice for many, a notable downside of using the platform is that guests may sometimes find themselves paying more than they initially expected, thanks to additional charges, like the cleaning fee.

Still, if you're looking for a unique accommodation experience or have specific needs (for instance, if you'd like access to a full kitchen), an Airbnb listing might be just what you're looking for. The best part is that many Airbnb offers free Wi-Fi like traditional hotels, making them great for workstation purposes.

Hostelworld

Many travelers choose to stay in hostels, and it's no surprise why. Hostels present an affordable alternative to traditional hotels, making them ideal for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. Beyond the cost savings (which is a major benefit for many), hostels also offer people who like to travel a social environment conducive to meeting and sharing experiences with like-minded folk.

Unlike in the past, hostels today offer relatively flexible accommodation solutions. For instance, if you're traveling with a friend or partner, you could look into reserving a private room. That said, if you're looking for a traditional hostel experience where you bunk with strangers, you'll want to reserve a spot at a reputable hostel. This, fortunately, becomes easy to do when you make the booking through Hostelworld .

When you're on Hostelworld's website, all you need to do is enter the details of your trip to view the hostels in the location. Before you complete your booking, check the property details, the house rules, and the reviews — if everything seems in order, you can proceed with making the payment.

Once you make the payment, Hostelworld offers a 100% booking guarantee. In the event that something goes wrong with your booking, the company will credit your account with the entire deposit you paid and an additional $50 that you can use toward future bookings.

Whether you want to book a traditional hotel accommodation, a private stay, or even long-term boarding, Agoda is a good bet. With a whole host of filters that allow you to specify your preferences in terms of the property type, distance from the city center, and more, Agoda helps you zero in on a property/hotel that works for you.

What's more, the website also allows you to specifically view hotels that are pet-friendly (which is great if you want to travel with your pet ), workstation-friendly, and ideal for groups. This way, you won't have to deal with any unpleasant surprises when you visit the property since you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're getting.

To help you make an informed decision, the platform lists the reviews left by past customers. Agoda's entire mission has been to make travel affordable for its customers. In line with this, the website runs a loyalty program called AgodaCash.

If you book a room at a hotel or property that participates in this program, you get awarded AgodaCash, which you can put toward future bookings to make your next stay more affordable. The only thing to note here is that you won't be able to use your AgodaCash in combination with other offers and rewards. Given this, you'll have to review the promotions available and choose one that offers the most savings.

Booking.com

Booking.com, which was founded almost 30 years ago in 1996, is one of the oldest and most popular online travel booking companies. Like in the case of Agoda, Booking.com makes it easy for you to look up hotel and property listings with its user-friendly interface.

One of the standout features of Booking.com is its trip planner, which is ideal for people who are uncertain about their travel plans. Additionally, the platform is pretty flexible in terms of offering you numerous room types and pricing tiers to choose from. This lets you view and take into consideration the upfront charges for different accommodation types, helping you make a well-thought-out decision.

Booking.com, like the other websites on this list, displays reviews left by previous travelers, so you get an unbiased idea of what the property has to offer. If you still have any specific questions that you would like answered before you complete the booking, you can use the "Ask a question" button that you'll find on the listing page for each property and post your questions.

Operational in over 70 countries with over three million listings, Expedia is a great choice for comparing your options before booking. If you decide to use Expedia as your travel booking partner, it's a good idea to sign up for OneKey, which is Expedia's rewards program.

With this program, you get to earn OneKeyCash for every dollar spent, which you can then use to book eligible hotels, car rentals , flights, and even activities in the future. You also get to save 10% or more with the Member Prices you'll have access to once you sign up for this program. So, if you're a budget-savvy traveler, there's no reason for you not to sign up for OneKey.

Expedia's website itself is fairly user-friendly. The interface works similar to that of Agoda and Booking.com. Once you enter your details, the listings come up — you can further filter these by the accommodation type, price per night, guest rating, star rating, cancellation options, and more. You also get to view the most frequently asked questions and verified reviews and ratings on the listing page, which ensures complete transparency.

Why These Accommodation Booking Websites Made It To This List

While there are numerous accommodation booking platforms, the ones listed above were chosen primarily based on personal positive experiences with them. Each of these booking partners boasts a user-friendly interface with complete transparency in terms of listing negative and positive reviews. This allows the average traveler to make an informed decision before spending hundreds of dollars or more on a stay.

Additionally, these platforms had favorable ratings and reviews from customers on the mobile-based App Store and Play Store, which is also an indication of how popular they are. Remember that while these platforms are reliable and popular, it's important to do your due diligence regarding the amenities and quality of stay at individual hotels to avoid any unwanted surprises during your trip.

Naked? With Strangers? In Europe, It’s How You Relax at the Spa.

Austria and Germany abound with popular resorts called thermen where getting the full sauna experience typically means having to take it all off.

An illustration of many people of many different ages and skin tones wearing no clothes, lounging in a flowery garden and a sauna. Leaves, flowers, books and steam inside the sauna obscure the bathers’ breasts and other private parts, and in the background, there is a bright blue lake and a snow-dappled mountain range.

By Valeriya Safronova

Valeriya Safronova, who is based in Vienna, steamed and soaked at three nude spas while reporting for this article.

Had I ever seen so much bare flesh in one room? Naked in a mixed-gender Austrian sauna, I sat opposite two dozen other nude people on wooden benches. Even after more than a year of living in Europe, as an American, I still felt a little uncomfortable sitting there in nothing but my own skin.

The sauna master came in to warm things up. Tall and lanky, wearing just a towel wrapped around his hips, he wheeled in a cart with several grapefruit-size balls of crushed ice infused with essential oils like black pepper, lime and eucalyptus. After a short speech telling us to leave immediately if we felt dizzy, he placed one of the ice balls onto a tray of hot coals, and it began to sizzle. The smell reminded me of an expensive aromatic candle: a touch sweet, a touch spicy.

He twisted forward, backward and sideways with a large towel clutched between his hands, like a half-dressed matador, moving the air around the room with a singular goal: to get us very, very hot, as part of a sauna ritual called aufguss, German for “infusion.” As I watched, mesmerized, I began to forget my awkwardness — or that I was even naked.

No swimsuits allowed

Austria and Germany abound with spas called thermen — resorts with pools, saunas, lakes, restaurants, bars and treatment areas. Typically, they have a warm mineral spring, and a section where nudity is required. Walk in wearing swim trunks and you’ll get glares and maybe even reprimands.

I had traveled to St. Martins Therme & Lodge in Frauenkirchen, a small town about an hour southeast of Vienna. St. Martins stands next to a serene, shallow lake where guests can swim in the summer or take a cold plunge in winter. At the center of the therme is an atrium with a pool that has indoor and outdoor areas connected via a tunnel, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the lake and several levels of balconies with rows of lounge chairs. The complex has five saunas and a steam room; 11 thermal pools; a treatment area with massages, facials and more; a restaurant; and a cafe. A day pass is 53 euros, or about $58.

After about five minutes of intense sweating in the sauna, we moved on to the second stage of the aufguss: Still naked, we filed outside into a courtyard with a whirlpool and walls covered in vines. My skin was so hot that the normally stinging 40-degree November air felt like a balm. An attendant handed each of us scoops of a salt-and-coconut-oil scrub, which we dutifully rubbed into our skin.

Thoroughly scoured, we returned to our perches inside, where the sauna master whipped out an oversize fan and spent the next six or seven minutes in a hot-air crescendo. After about 15 minutes total, the aufguss ended, and we flooded back out through the door, our bodies bright red and steamy.

Sit back, relax and ‘don’t stare’

The aufguss is just one of the joys of a day at a therme, which might also include a body treatment, a soak in a heated outdoor pool with rotating jets and a fresh schnitzel with an icy glass of wheat beer or sparkling apple juice. For locals in German-speaking countries, the aufguss is a hugely popular pastime, especially in the late fall and winter.

“I really enjoy it after a week of hard work, or when I just need relaxation, or if my body is really tense and my muscles are really stiff,” said Laura Blumenstiel, 29, a psychologist from Freiburg, in the southwestern corner of Germany, who has been a frequent visitor to thermen for about decade.

Typically, a therme complex is divided into two sections: one with several heated indoor and outdoor pools, where bathing suits are required and children are allowed, and a second that usually contains all the saunas, where clothing is verboten.

For some Americans, including me, nudity, especially in a mixed-gender environment, can initially feel extremely uncomfortable. Keon West, a professor of social psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, explained that cultural standards often affect what level of nudity people find tolerable: In some places, seeing women with their hair uncovered might feel racy, while in others, stripping down on a public beach is perfectly acceptable.

“You might think the Germans are a bit risqué, whereas they think they’re normal, and you’re a bit silly,” Dr. West said.

In countries like the United States, he said, there is a “highly sexualized and puritanical culture, where sex is tightly controlled. Attitudes are generally much more conservative concerning what women do and women’s bodies. In Europe that tends to be less of the case.”

In a number of studies, Dr. West and his team have found that being naked around others can increase self-confidence and life satisfaction. “If you go to a naturist event, you see a lot of normal people, people who aren’t airbrushed and aren’t Beyoncé, and you realize you don’t look bad compared to the average person,” Dr. West said. “And you spend time naked in their company and nothing bad happens. No one says anything bad to you, no one laughs at you.”

Some Americans have found that the discomfort of being nude in the sauna is fleeting and has a worthwhile payoff.

After moving to Graz, Austria, Amy Feineman, 38, a saddle fitter originally from Colorado, made the hourlong drive to Rogner Bad Blumau , a colorful, trippy therme and hotel designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian architect who believed that “the straight line is the curse of our civilization.” At the therme (day visit, €57), this philosophy translates to wavy floors, circular buildings with uneven ceilings, and bright orange, blue and green mosaics. On their first visit, Ms. Feineman and her husband skipped the nude sauna area, instead exploring the pools and outdoor gardens partly clothed. But on their second visit, they felt brave enough to bare it all in the sauna area.

“It took us most of our first day there to build up the courage to check it out, and then we spent most of our time there,” Ms. Feineman said. “I’m a plus-size person, and in the U.S., I would never wear a bikini in public. Here, I’m happily walking around the nude area.”

Ms. Feineman and her husband are regular guests at Rogner Bad Blumau now. Her main piece of advice for other nervous Americans? “Don’t stare,” she said. “And don’t worry about them judging you either.”

The most basic entry ticket to a therme, with the sauna section included, usually costs from €40 to €65, depending on how fancy or large the complex is. Typically, thermen offer at least three ticket options: a three- or four-hour pass, a day pass, and an evening pass. For example, Therme Erding in Germany, about an hour northeast of Munich, has 24 saunas and a large indoor-outdoor pool in the nude section, and costs €62 for an entire weekend day.

The best way to experience a therme is to relax and settle in for at least a half day. Bring a book. Schedule a massage, a facial or a “soft pack,” a treatment in which a massage therapist rubs a hydrating cream into your skin, then leaves you ensconced in a contraption that’s a cross between a sleeping bag and a warm water bed.

Thermen usually offer packages that encourage daylong retreats. For example, St. Martins, where my aufguss odyssey began, has an option that costs €107 and includes a bathrobe, slippers, unlimited towels and snacks.

Sweltering with a soundtrack

The sauna master was playing pulsing Austrian pop music and handing out bottles of cold, nonalcoholic beer to the 40 or so of us gathered at Alpentherme Gastein , about 90 minutes south of Salzburg (day visit, €45.50), for a party-themed evening aufguss. The balls of crushed ice flashed from the lights shining beneath them, and he encouraged us to chat, a rarity in most saunas.

Aufguss sessions come in all different types. Some sauna masters blast Metallica, while others prefer calming beats. Some dress up as Vikings. But there are two immutable rules: No clothes, and don’t enter an aufguss once it’s started (you can leave anytime).

A few other tips: Always sit on a towel in the dry saunas, claim your spot at an aufguss a few minutes early (the higher you sit, the hotter you’ll be), don’t bring your phone into nude areas, and shower before entering.

I had come a long way toward embracing my naked self by the time I sat down in the party-themed aufguss and started grooving to the music. It required a little bit of letting go: of my fears, of my ego and of my control. Glancing around — without staring, of course — I could see that no one around me looked like Jennifer Lopez or Jeremy Allen White. We were all just beautiful lumps and bumps.

Was anyone judging my body? To be honest, I was way too hot to care.

2023 was an exceptional year for anime . And if the first weeks of 2024 are any indication, audiences can likely expect another great year of terrific shows.

From new seasons of returning favorites like My Hero Academia , Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba , Sound! Euphonium , and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation to exciting new premieres like Delicious in Dungeon , Kaiju No. 8 , Dragon Ball Daima , and Lazarus , anime fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024.

To help you keep up with everything that’s coming out this year, we’ve gathered a quorum of Polygon’s resident anime lovers to create a list of the year’s best in anime. For clarity and convenience, these shows are presented in reverse chronological order, so the newest releases will always show up first. We’ll be updating our list periodically, season by season, so check in regularly to see what new, what’s hot, and most importantly of all — what’s best. Enjoy!

Bucchigiri?!

A close-up shot of a black-haired anime boy blushing with pink-ribboned bells and baby chickens surrounding his expression.

Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Sk8 the Infinity director Hiroko Utsumi is back with yet another original anime series. This time it’s a fantasy comedy about Araji Tomobishi, a shy young student who transfers to a new school filled with roughnecks and gangsters. Worse yet, he gets possessed by a powerful genie whose power inadvertently pits him between two of the strongest gangs in his school. To top it off, the poor guy just wants to lose his virginity, and instead he just ends up accidentally punching people, getting himself into increasingly deadlier and more precarious situations.

If you’re looking for a nonsensical action comedy with over-the-top antics, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure -esque battles, and memorable character designs, Bucchigiri?! is an absolute delight. —Toussaint Egan

Brave Bang Bravern!

A blue horned robot staring at a red and white robot as it poses dramatically with an animated logo graphic holographically projected behind it.

Fans of last year’s Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury , rejoice: There’s another great giant robot anime to watch this year, and once more, it’s also easily one of the funniest anime comedies of 2024.

Directed by veteran mecha anime director Masami Ōbari, Brave Bang Bravern! follows the story of Isami Ao and Lewis Smith, two mech pilots who meet during a joint American-Japanese military exercise in Hawaii. When their military base is besieged by an extraterrestrial threat, all hope seems lost — until a gigantic humanoid robot named Bravern comes to save the day... but only if Isami agrees to pilot him.

Where exactly did Bravern come from, though, and how does he know who Isami is? The answer, for right now at least, is don’t worry about it — just vibe! A big-hearted parody of “super robot” anime with explosive action, fun characters, and intense homoerotic overtones, Brave Bang Bravern! is an early contender for one of my favorite anime of 2024. —TE

Metallic Rouge

A woman standing in a forest of glowing alien-like plants, surrounded by a halo of light as intricate circular symbols bath the upper half of her body in Metallic Rouge.

Bones, the critically acclaimed studio behind popular anime like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood , Eureka Seven , Mob Psycho 100 , and My Hero Academia , is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. What better way to celebrate the iconic production house than with an all-new original anime that combines tokusatsu-inspired action with a byzantine sci-fi conspiracy plot?

Set in a future where humanity has colonized the inner solar system and androids known as “Neans” serve their every beck and call, Metallic Rouge follows the story of Rouge Redstar — a Nean with the ability to disguise herself as a human who is dispatched to Mars on a top-secret mission. Along with her partner Naomi Orthmann, Rouge battles against a terrorist faction of androids bent on toppling society, all while transforming into a superpowered armored battle form known as “Metal Rouge.”

Co-written by Yutaka Izubuchi ( RahXephon ) and Toshizo Nemoto ( Log Horizon ), the series feels like a pitch-perfect throwback to the aesthetic and storytelling of early-aughts sci-fi anime, complete with wild left-field plot twists, dense world-building, and a New Jack Swing-inspired bop of a theme song . It’s certainly an entertaining watch, one which demands repeat viewings in order to pick up on every new detail and clue the series manages to throw at its audience. —TE

Solo Leveling

A black-haired anime boy in a blue hoodie with blood stains on his face holding a sword in a dark hallway.

Going into Solo Leveling , I didn’t know anything about it other than it was one of the most anticipated anime releases of the season; I didn’t even look up the premise before diving in. By the time the credits rolled on the third episode, I honestly still couldn’t have told you what precisely was happening in Solo Leveling , but I did know I was hooked.

Blending typical fantasy adventure beats with video game elements, Solo Leveling is a unique and thrilling take on the typical zero-to-hero narrative. Sung Jin-woo is not the most dynamic protagonist, I must admit, but the spectacular animation, impeccably choreographed action, and relentlessly paced storytelling always leaves me itching to smash play on the next episode. —Sadie Gennis

Delicious in Dungeon

A group of adventurers in various outfits and armor dissecting a mushroom monster to cook in Delicious in Dungeon.

Where to watch: Netflix

Delicious in Dungeon (also known as Dungeon Meshi ) is the anime this year, sporting a fun cast of characters and a delightful plot: As a crew of adventurers makes their way through a dungeon to save one of their fallen mates, they are trying to save money by eating the creatures they slay. It turns out that the critters down in this labyrinth are more edible than expected . Along the way, the gang learns a lot about the dungeon and the people inside of it through analyzing the creatures they slay and eat.

The author behind Delicious in Dungeon , Ryoko Kui, has a clear love for the fantasy genre, as you can really see her attention to detail when it comes to fantasy races, designs, and world-building that would rival even the best Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters. All of the characters are charming in their own ways, and each episode will leave you more excited for the next one. —Julia Lee
