Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

Is tipping customary in India?

While traveling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my cell phone while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your cell phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted in an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What is ATM access like in India?

ATMs are widespread across India in both cities and smaller towns. Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro are the most commonly accepted cards, but of those Visa and Mastercard are more likely to have success. The daily withdrawal limit differs from bank to bank.

The weather in India varies from region to region, but it’s generally safe to say that December–February sees dry, cooler weather before the heat intensifies from March–May. June, July and August are the monsoon months, though the amount of rain differs across the country, while October, September and November see rainfall ease once more.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travelers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

I am totally unhappy with Thomas Cook, on trip to Andamans they put me in terrible hotel at port Blair , a room with just a bed ( called it 3 star), did not give time for lunch on one segment, being diabetic that became a serious concern

Did not take us to many tourist attractions though was mentioned in their list, Claimed these were COMPLEMENTARY AND HENCE WE SHOULD COVER IT ON OUT OWN. This was mentioned in the offer letter. Did not give the iteneary till the last .

In short package was grossly mis- sold. Did not expect that from a number one tour operater. Could not even connect to them on phone after the money was paid.

We felt so well taken care of - just like in Egypt! Our driver, Mr. Singh (I believe his first name is Mahindra), was absolutely fabulous! He went above and beyond all along the way. The tour guides were all very knowledgeable and very kind. My husband asked me to add that perhaps you could ask the local tour guides to make all excursions optional. In both Egypt and India we visited multiple craft shops (think: papyrus makers, stone masons, marble workers, textile shops...) and felt pressured to purchase things we didn't really want or need. Sometimes it is a wonderful thing, to learn how something is made the "old' way but, when you have already purchased two Indian outfits, a scarf, and a pashmina, you really don't need to go to a textile shop We will definitely use your company in the future as your representatives make us feel safe in countries in which we otherwise might now..

The trip was absolutely amazing experience. you get to experience true beauty of India. The tour almost covered everything to do in the cities and some great local experience like walking tours, local home visit for cultural experience. Our driver Ramesh was very friendly. We always felt safe with our driver and the guides. Truly an unmissable experience, everything was perfect.

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

I travelled to India as a single mother with my 13 year old son and we booked the golden triangle with Ranthambore trip for 8 days. From the initial booking of the trip on line with Tour radar, the run up to the holiday and throughout the trip, I found the communication and service to have been excellent. There was a small issue prior to departure after a PayPal payment for additional activities that I had paid a month prior was bizarrely sent back to me, but I paid this in cash on my arrival to India. Thankfully the mishap didn’t affect the planned additional activities. Our driver ‘Messi’ picked us up at the airport and looked after us throughout the entire 8 day trip. He was brilliant, always available and friendly. We stayed in 4 different hotels, that were mostly adequate and comfortable. I wouldn’t class them as UK 4 star, but reasonable for the price you are paying. The second hotel in Jaipur unfortunately was not best as the location was very near to an open sewage river and ontop of the smell from that, there was a wedding on the hotel grounds across the road, that kept us awake all night when we had to be up at 4 am the following morning for an early start. We had tour guides in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra who were all very knowledgeable and friendly and whilst we were in Ranthambore on tiger safari, the safari guides were also good and we had an amazing experience of seeing a tiger very close up. Agra and the Taj Mahal was incredible and was the perfect ending to our trip before we went back to Delhi and flew home.

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

In tourradar there were more options of tour to choose from. I am glad that I choose the golden triangle with Varanasi because it covered most of the north India that I wanted to visit. World Travel Experiences is the tour company that took care of us very well. They were very prompt to answer any questions and concerns. They took care of us since the beginning until the very end. The drivers were very polite and respectful, and they know how to navigate the heavily traffic roads. The tour guides were speaking very good English, knowledgeable and resourceful. Almost all of the tour guides went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and covered the Itinerary. Most of the hotel rooms were above the standard. We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet and over night train ride. It is advisable to keep 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10 rupees for tipping. Overall it was a great memorable vacation. India's Best Golden Triangle with Wildlife and Royal Castle Stay

Recently, I embarked on a remarkable journey with Swastik Journeys, and I can't help but share my incredible experience. Traveling solo, I was provided with what felt like my own private tour, meticulously organized and paced to perfection. The highlight of my adventure was undoubtedly the enchanting city of Jaipur, where the vibrant culture and historical beauty were brought to life in a way I never imagined possible. The expertise and warmth of the tour guides, from Anirut's depth of knowledge to Atal's insightful stories and Ali's engaging narratives, made each destination come alive in its unique way. Their professionalism and passion significantly enhanced my touring experience, making every moment memorable. The driving services provided by Lakan were exceptional; his skill, courtesy, and knowledge of the roads ensured that every journey was comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. It was like traveling with a local friend who knew all the right paths and timings, ensuring we avoided unnecessary delays or tourist traps. While the tour was filled with countless highlights, the accommodations provided throughout were of very high quality, shining with cleanliness and hospitality that made each stay comfortable and welcoming. However, I feel it's important to note that the castle stay didn't quite meet the same standards. Located in a more remote area, it lacked the special touch seen elsewhere in the tour, particularly as it was undergoing preparations for a wedding, leading to some disarray and diminishing the experience. Despite this, the overall experience with Swastik Journeys was a solid 10 out of 10. Their ability to provide a well-managed and expertly paced tour, combined with the selection of remarkable places and outstanding guides, left me thoroughly satisfied. While I would suggest revisiting the inclusion of the castle in the itinerary, I would not hesitate to book another tour with Swastik or recommend them to others seeking an authentic and enjoyable travel experience in India.

5 Days Golden Triangle Tour with Ranthambore(Tigers and Taj Mahal Sunrise)

From start to finish the whole experience has been made very easy. Everything is organised for you, meaning that you don't have to worry about a thing. The guides were very knowledgeable about each city we visited and Akhtar (Ali) our driver for the week has been fantastic - friendly, knowledgeable and we always felt safe on some very hectic roads. Thank you for everything!

For The Love of Taj & Tiger - Golden Triangle & Ranthambore with 3 Tiger Safaris

We had a wonderful 8 days with MTA -tour radar. We enjoyed our kind driver Manu who tried to accommodate our every wish - while managing to drive the busy crazy streets of India. Each guide was unique and explained the sights well. We had fun on the Jeep safaris and saw beautiful landscapes and some animals but seeing a tiger is rare. The hotels were acceptable- said 4 star but realty 3-3.5 USA saying that - the service was excellent and we were in remote places. The food was delicious- repetitive after a ew days but it’s India so Curry’s and dal! We would recommend it to anyone not wanting to be in a large group. As a credit to MTA tours we were well cared for and checked in on - often. We also enjoyed private dinner and cooking in Jaipur. We would recommend paying major tips in advance- this became awkward- with finding atms and getting small bills. Overall really fun and worthwhile!

Magic of Taj Mahal & Krishna - Golden Triangle with Vrindavan !!

Fantastic tour! Our driver, Vimal, was excellent. He kept us safe, tended to our needs and gave us tips throughout our tour. After every excursion he was waiting with an air-conditioned car and cold water. I’m addition, he took us to a lot of local restaurants per our request and we never got sick! Prior to the tour’s departure and during the tour, Manish was on hand to answer questions and he constantly checked in to make sure we were happy. From beginning to end I was very happy with my tour, and if I return to India I will definitely use MTA again! Thank you so much for the excellent experience.

My fiance and I opted for the 5 day tour with another couple (friends from Sydney), ahead of our indian friend's wedding in Mumbai. It was a great decision. Arun's company was the perfect choice. The tour was very well organised, offering flexibility and we even had the option to upgrade to a private tour at no extra cost! Our drivers Ali and Ifran were fabulous. The tour guides in each city were also great. A shout out to Ram in Agra and Singh in Jaipur. Definitely our two favourite guides! We were fortunate to see a tiger in Ranthambore (arrowhead). Would highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to visit the golden triangle.

Had a wonderful first time visit to India thanks to Joyful Holidays and the custom tour they arranged on our behalf. Accommodations at our 4 different locations were great as well as very knowledgeable tour guides. Added benefit was having a single driver for the whole tour who kept us safe and went above and beyond his driving duties everyday. The tigers were shy in Ranthambore but the park by itself with abundant wildlife did not disappoint. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur each provided a look into Inda’s history that was pretty much unknown to me before and every site visit was amazing. If and when I return to India, I will look to Joyful Holidays to work with me to provide a customized itinerary to see what I couldn’t in my first visit.

Holi Festival Celebration in Mathura-Vrindavan India with Golden Triangle Tour 2024

It was great to be with the group of people from different country, celebrating our childhood memories. We danced, sang and played with colors with our new friends in Delhi, Mathura and Vrindavan. The hotel in Delhi was amazing and the driver was very friendly. The best part of the trip was the darshan of Shri Radha Madhav in Vrindavan. I have never seen such a beautiful Gopi Chandan and Jhula. I will definitely recommend this trip to my friends, who are planning to go to India.

What people love about Custom Tours in India

Thoroughly enjoyed this trip. All the arrangements worked very well. There was some reorganisation required because the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays but this was worked out very well. My driver Bhagi was safe and secure on the road and was a good guide to the sights and scenes of Rajasthan.

We had a great time in India. The tour manager Mr. Amit was very responsive to all my questions and issues prior to the trip and was waiting for us to greet us at the first hotel. Our driver Mr. Vikram was great too. He was very professional and was always on time waiting for us each day. We absolutely loved our local guide in Jaipur. He was so professional, knowledgeable and quick that we felt we were very well taken care of. Now here’s the reason I can’t give 5 stars to this tour. It was the hotel in Jaipur and the local guide in Delhi. The hotel was not up to the standard of 3 stars at all. The bathroom was disgusting, moldy and gross. They called us around 10pm asking us to order room service both nights we stayed. It was the most horrible service that I have ever experienced at any hotels around the world. Now the local guide in Delhi, he made us decide to say goodbye after 3 hours. We never had a problem tipping people at all until the rickshaw ride (which was included in the tour). It was such a turn off moment for us when the guide asked us to tip them 200 for a 200 ride. He was also on the personal phone calls a lot, which made us feel that he really didn’t want to be there at all for us. We had to call it a day.
