Scream Filming Locations

While house sitting alone one night, screenwriter Kevin Williamson caught a TV special on the Gainesville Ripper. Suitably spooked, he called a friend for company and the pair began quizzing each other on horror movie trivia. And so, the spark for Scream was born.

Table of Contents

Williamson holed up for a week to bash out the script, leading to a bidding frenzy that eventually caught the eye of Dimension Films, and in turn, Wes Craven. Thanks to Williamson’s knowing script, the Scream series reinvigorated the gasping slasher genre in the mid-90s.

Peppered with self-aware teens and horror references galore, the then-titled Scary Movie came to life under Craven’s directorial eye. Once it hit theaters, audiences loved its mash of scares and chuckles and word of mouth spread. At the end of its theatrical run, Scream scared up $173 million in worldwide box office receipts, and the horror genre was given a new lease of life.

Where was Scream filmed?

The Scream filming locations are anchored in the Northern California wine country. The Sonoma County towns of Glen Ellen, Tomales, Healdsburg, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa all feature in the film, lending the slasher the perfect  small-town atmosphere.

For fans of the Scream franchise, visiting the film’s actual locations goes beyond mere sightseeing; it’s an experience that brings it shuddering to life. There’s an undeniable feeling that comes from standing in the same spots immortalised on film. Trust me, this is coming from someone (me, it was me) who got weirdly choked up at the grocery store where Sidney and Tatum pick up party snacks.

This guide will dive into why these spots were selected by Craven and his production crew, what happened during the location shoots, and how you can visit the Scream filming locations yourself.

Why these locations were handpicked for Scream

The first draft of Williamson’s screenplay initially took place in his home town of Bayboro, North Carolina. But production struggled to find locations that fit his exact descriptions without requiring a lot of work.

They needed “either a lot of painting or upgrading or downgrading,” explains production designer Bruce Alan Miller in the E! A True Hollywood Story: Scream documentary. The dark, brick homesteads they visited in Wilmington didn’t sync up with Craven’s vision.

After reading the script, Craven knew it was critical to find the right spot, and as a native Californian he felt it had to be rooted in the west coast state. He wanted to find a place to tap into a special sort of Americana.

Nevertheless, the Weinsteins had other ideas, wanting to save $1 million dollars by shooting in Canada. And while producers ventured to Vancouver for a preliminary scout, ultimately Craven “took a hard stand,” and insisted that the movie shoot in the US.

“We looked in L.A., and we flew to San Jose and drove up to Northern California, stopping at towns and looking,” co-executive producer Stuart M. Besser told E! And, in February 1996, they found the fictionalised version of Bayboro, now known as Woodsboro, in the small towns of Sonoma County.

Situated an hour’s drive north of the San Francisco Bay Area, the wine country’s bucolic, small-town feel matched the atmosphere of Williamson’s script. “Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Tomales Bay… all of those towns, they had a charm to them, they had a small-town America feel to them,” said Miller.

This echoed Craven’s wishes for a filming location on homegrown soil. “I wanted very much that very, very American feel to it, so that’s how we ended up there,” Craven reveals in Scream: The Inside Story .

Not only that, it aligned with Miller’s goals for the production design. Unlike North Carolina, where they struggled to find houses that matched the specific geography inked into Williamson’s script, in Sonoma they uncovered a range of perfect homesteads none of which required any major building.

The glass windows from Casey Becker’s front porch, intricate sprawl of Stu Macher’s home, all of these key components were crucial to exacting the terror of the setpieces, were found on their scouting missions.

So let’s dive into them.

Primary Scream filming locations

Stu macher’s house : 3871 tomales-petaluma road, tomales, ca.

Stu's house in Scream, the filming location of Scream house

“It all began with a Scream over 911, and ended in a bloodbath that has rocked the small town of Woodsboro,” begins Gale Weathers’ voiceover accompanied by a wide shot of a Californian sunrise illuminating the wine country foothills. It’s hard to imagine that closing shot without that breathtaking view of the Cotati Valley from the Tomales Bay location.

The Victorian homestead was built in 1990 for Jack and Carolyn MacPhail, a couple who both passed away in 1991 shortly before construction was completed. The house remained in the family until it was listed for sale several years later. Details of the couple’s passing didn’t elude the filmmakers, with cast and crew both aware of the dwelling’s macabre history.

In a set interview featured in the Behind the Scream documentary, Matthew Lillard said: “Literally – two people have died in the house. So coming up the hill and you’re doing a Wes Craven film and somebody tells you, ‘Oh, by the way, two people have died in the house,’ it brings on an entirely new thing.”

The house sat on the market until Scream location manager Eric Klosterman came across it one morning. According to Miller, Klosterman was at a bakery in downtown Tomales and spotted the house in the realtor’s window next door.  Once Craven and Miller saw it, they knew it was the one with the latter stating the abode appeared like a “haunted house”:

“It’s set up on this hill which is spooky looking,” Miller explained, “And there’s this flow around the house with lots of ways that people could walk and go from one room to another. Somebody could be in trouble in the driveway or in the front of the house, and you wouldn’t know about it in the TV room.”

Behind the scenes shot of filming Stu's party in Scream

But its success rested upon more than the house’s layout – Craven’s keen eye for horror movie geography brought those aspects clearly to life.

“You have to solve certain problems that relate to the geography of the house,” stated Craven in Cinefantastique’s Lawrence French in January 1997, explaining the script’s original attic chase sequence between Sidney and the killer. “But we never found a house that was designed like that.” So, they reworked the script based on the layout of the Tomales homestead. The Victorian mansion’s unique framework could easily have proven confusing for audiences, but Craven turned it into a memorable location.

On the dressing front, the production was delighted by most of the existing components but augmented it some. “We wanted Stu’s home to have elements of a dark and haunted Gothic house and it needed to be very isolated,” Craven added.

“The art department went in there and did an enormous number on the house. We put in all sorts of beams, and stained-glass windows, darkened all the colors, and brought in all the set dressings. It was done in a sort of farmhouse style, and we changed it into a Gothic farmhouse. We shot everything right in the house, and even used the attic. The attic wasn’t very creepy, so we darkened it.”

Scenes filmed at 3871 Tomales-Petaluma Road

scream movie tour

Arguably the most beloved horror movie finale of all time, the movie’s last act takes place entirely at 3871 Tomales-Petaluma Road, als known as 261 Turner Lane in the movie.

From the moment the Top Story news van pulls up to its long, winding driveway to the opening bars of Birdbrain’s “Youth in America”, all the way through to Gale Weathers’ closing report to camera, the film’s twists and turns all unravel here.

Here are the scenes that take place at Stu’s house:

  • Randy, Stu and friends watch Halloween
  • Sidney and Billy sneak off to have sex
  • Tatum’s death in the garage
  • Gale and Dewey’s walk in the woods
  • Sidney’s chase with the killer
  • The final kitchen showdown

Stories from the set

One of horror history’s most well-loved endings took a whopping 21 nights to shoot, its cast and crew calling it quits as the sun rose and starting over again the next evening. This rigorous shooting schedule took its toll.

Every sequence that takes place at Stu’s house technically falls under Scene 118 in the script, making it one of the longest scenes of the production. The crew even got t-shirts printed up that read “I Survived Scene 118′:

The assistant director referred to it on the daily call sheets as the “People live, people die” scene. Is it any wonder Craven called it “the scene from hell?”

Sidney Prescott’s house – 1820 Calistoga Road, Santa Rosa, CA

Sidney's house in Scream, Scream filming locations

The Prescott house appears only in a handful of scenes but it needed a specific atmosphere for the movie’s second attack sequence that strikes when Sidney is home alone. “There is something that’s not normal about it, it’s just sitting there, isolated by itself,” Miller told E!.

“We wanted houses that were vulnerable.” Miller explained to Cinefantastique when discussing how they chose the Woodsboro dwellings. “We didn’t want homes that looked like castles, or that you could really protect yourself in. We needed houses that were close to the ground, and that had windows and doors that were very accessible, so if somebody was going to be stalking them, they could get to them very quickly.

It would be your average middle-class teenager’s home, with nothing too scary about it. When they come home, they think they’re safe and then all of a sudden there’s a knock at the front door, and then there’s a knock at the back door. What teenager thinks that death is just around the corner? They just don’t think in those terms, but in reality they are susceptible to being stalked.”

  • A montage of shots as the sunsets
  • Sidney on the phone with Tatum
  • Sidney on the phone with the killer, and the chase sequence
  • The cops arrive and Sidney is outside in an ambulance

“Fantastic location,” laughs Craven on the Scream audio commentary, before revealing how much it cost to use the home: “We just about bought it between the rental fees and the repair fees.”

Sidney's house in Scream, view of the Santa Rosa mountains

“We were shooting in the beautiful wine country around Santa Rosa, using some very interesting houses we found there, so I wanted to be able to see out of windows a lot, and get a sense of inside, outside, as opposed to doing interiors on a stage. There was a lot of tricky balancing of light levels from interior to exteriors. that we had to contend with. It’s a shame so much of the film takes place at night, because it’s so beautiful where we were shooting.

Casey Becker’s house – 7420 Sonoma Mountain Road, Glen Ellen, CA

Casey Becker's house in Scream

“She worked for five days and made cinematic history in genre films,” Craven said of Barrymore’s performance in the film’s iconic opening sequence.  And for such an impactful, and devastating introduction to Scream , production sought an isolated house for Barrymore’s character Casey Becker to spend her final moments.

Initially, they ventured to a familiar horror movie locale. “We’d gone to the Cujo house,” Miller told E!, “and I think that’s when the location manager saw the house back in the trees and made contact with the people.” While they opted not to shoot at the Cujo homestead, Williamson told The Ringer the famous abode was production basecamp for the opening shoot.

It was that “house back in the trees” which would go on to become the Beckers, and it was located next to an isolated vineyard. “Although it looks like this beautiful idyllic setting, if you’re in that house and someone’s wandering around outside stalking you, you’re very vulnerable.”

Scenes filmed at Casey’s house

  • Casey on the phone with the killer
  • Casey’s attack and death
  • Casey’s parents coming home

Throughout production, Craven chose to shield the actor who voiced Ghostface from the cast. Roger Jackson, who plays the spectral killer, was not in the same room as Barrymore for filming. In fact, the two never met. “We hid him. We had separate rooms. He was never around. He was never at craft services. He was absolutely incognito. It made it scary for the actors and Wes just got better performances out of them,” executive producer Marianne Maddelena told THR .

“The first night when we were filming the bulk of the scene with Ms. Barrymore, I was outside the window under a little canopy trying to keep dry because it was raining,” Jackson explained to THR .

“I’m looking at her through the window while I’m talking to her on the phone, but she couldn’t see outside. Then on the second night they moved me to the garage of the house and set me up with a monitor so I could watch the camera feed.”

Woodsboro High School – Sonoma Community Center, 276 E Napa St, Sonoma, CA

scream movie tour

Discovering the Santa Rosa High School was part of what clinched the production’s decision to shoot in that area, Miller describing it as “Gothic, and has a kind of castle-like quality to it. It’s Gorgeous To Look At, and it looks a little scary.”

But they didn’t shoot there.

Despite this perfect locale, things didn’t quite go to plan. While the school administration and the Principal were excited for the movie’s production to enter its halls, shortly before cameras were set to roll the Santa Rosa School Board finally read the script and took umbrage with the violence.

In addition to the movie’s they even referred to the movie’s Principal Himbry as “foul-mouthed” even though he only calls two pranksters little shits.

Scream high school filming location, Principal Himbry

At a public forum it was decided that the movie would not be shot there. Craven was frustrated by the way the decision had been reached: “It was all based on a manufactured reality… Over and over they were saying it was about disemboweled teenagers, and a foul-mouthed principal. From that you could imagine that every other scene is people being gutted, and having their viscera being thrown at the camera, while the principal was running around using four-letter words. If I heard that, I would say. ‘Hey. wait a minute, let me read it,’ but people just accepted that that was what the script was about, which was completely not the case.”

The way the issue was finally resolved was not to my liking,” Williamson told Cinefantastique, “because it was counter to the message of the film, which is that you can’t blame movies for real life violence. The Santa Rosa school board felt that, *We can, and we do,’ and they did. As a result, we weren’t allowed to shoot at their school. “

While the ethical frustrations facing the filmmakers were aplenty, the delay also cost Miramax what Craven estimated to be around $350,000. Despite several other schools in the surrounding area following suit, and refusing Craven’s production, they eventually found a spot that worked perfectly – Sonoma Community Center.

“It had been a high school and it didn’t fall under the jurisdiction of any of the school boards, so we could pay to use it,” said Dimension Films development head, Richard Potter.

Note: the Principal Himbry office sequences were shot on a warehouse set in downtown Santa Rosa.

Originally the Sonoma Grammar School, this landmark building became the Sonoma Community Center in 1952 and has since established its mission as a place “where recreational, artistic, instructive, literary, and educational projects for the general welfare of the community may be furthered.”

The Center recently celebrated its 70th birthday which included photos and mementoes from the Scream set.

The Riley house – 824 McDonald Ave, Santa Rosa, CA

The Riley house in Scream

The Riley household is nestled in amongst other Santa Rosa horror hotspot. “It was right across the street from the house used by Alfred Hitchcock in Shadow of a Doubt, ” noted Miller. “It was a wonderful fluke, because Shadow of a Doubt is one of my favorite movies.” While Miller had hoped to film in that iconic horror abode, the upstairs landing didn’t have sufficient space, so they ventured across the street for what would become the Riley house.

Despite the upstairs being unsuited, one room at 904 MacDonald Ave did make it into the finished product: the kitchen from the Shadow of a Doubt house is where they filmed the Riley house breakfast scene. Thanks to Mark Hough for confirming!

Scenes filmed at the Riley house

  • Sidney and Tatum hang out in Tatum’s bedroom
  • Before the party they hang out on Tatum’s deck

During filming, Hitchcock hung out on 824’s beautiful porch – the very same wraparound one Sidney and Tatum spend time on while being stalked by Ghostface.

While scouting for the location, the crew visited the house across the street – the aforementioned Shadow of a Doubt house which was owned by a widow whose grandchildren often came to stay. It was here, in one of their rooms, that producer Marienna Maddelena spotted a mask draped over a chair: the Ghostface mask that would become an iconic part of Scream lore.

“We were scouting a location and we went to this two-story house on this lovely street. The lady was fine with us walking around and I went upstairs and there was a boy’s bedroom. It had the feeling that no one had been in it for a while. Like, whoever had moved out. And I saw the mask sitting on a chair. At the time it had a white shroud. And I thought, “Oh my God, this mask, this is it.”

Downtown Woodsboro  – Healdsburg, CA Town Center

To capture the small-town feel Craven felt integral to the movie, producers honed in on Healdsburg Town Center to stand in for downtown Woodsboro.  “It had a very pretty town square,” revealed Miller to Cinefantastique. “It really looked more like New England than California.”

The police station – City Hall, 124 Matheson Street, Healdsburg, CA

Woodsboro police station

The police station where Billy is questioned, where Sidney waits for Tatum, and the infamous alleyway where Sidney punches Gale were all filmed at the same place — Healdsburg City Hall.

“There’s a City Hall on the corner of the square that we turned into our police station. We just changed some signs and put a few things in the windows.  We couldn’t use a real police station, because we would have been at their mercy, and we couldn’t be disrupting their police activity,” Miller told Cinefantastique.

We also see the building later on when Dewey drops off Sidney and Tatum in town before the party. In this screenshot, you can see evidence of City Hall. Just beside Tatum is a drop-box for people to pay their city utility bills:

scream movie tour

Healdsburg City Hall was relocated elsewhere shortly after filming on Scream wrapped, but the building remains. It’s now a deli called Oakville Grocery that retains some of the original – and recognisable – structures that made their way into the film.

The town square and fountain – Healdsburg Plaza Park, 217 Healdsburg Ave, CA

scream movie tour

The town square appears for establishing shots and lengthier dialogue sequences in Scream. Craven lensed quick snatches of a garbage truck to denote early morning in Woodsboro at the corner of the park, and part of the town curfew montage features store owners locking up and a mother and child rushing to their car.

But its most memorable sequence features the core gang chewing the fat over Casey and Steve’s murders. This is where we first meet Stu and Randy and we’re treated to the “liver alone” pun by Matthew Lillard and Matthew Lillard’s extremely long tongue.

This one-acre urban park sits at the intersection of Matheson Street and Healdsburg Ave, and was dubbed one of the most beautiful town squares in the US .

The grocery store – Pacific Market, 1465 Town and Country Drive, Santa Rosa, CA

Grocery store in Scream

The Pacific Market in Santa Rosa was known as Town and Country Market in 1996 during filming and when I visited in 2008. You can see my photo above (that’s my then-partner looking very excited about shopping carts) which I took without a movie still for reference – and I suspect I’m in the wrong spot entirely! Surely this means another visit is on the cards to rectify this massive error?

The scenes filmed here follow on from Sidney and Tatum hanging out at the Rileys. Dewey drops them off outside the police station and they wander over to the store, where they are stalked through the aisles by Ghostface.

Randy’s Video Store – Bradley Video, 3080 Marlow Road, Santa Rosa CA

The video store in Scream

Part of the allure of Scream is its love of movies. The video store where Randy works ropes in a slew of visual nods – a promotional standee of Jamie Lee Curtis in Mother’s Boys – alongside its staple sound bites. A customer asks Randy for “the werewolf movie with ET’s mom in it,” to which he fires back, “ The Howling . Horror. Straight ahead.”

But it’s the existence of the actual establishment itself that anchors the film to its era. A small town under a curfew and what’s everyone doing? Hitting up the video store! And this isn’t a Blockbuster the kids frequent either, but a local Bay Area video store called Bradley Video.

Unfortunately the store closed down in 2008 after the owner filed for bankruptcy, along with another 10 Bradley Video locations in the area. The building where it was once located remains vacant, if you want to visit it and commiserate.

A big thank you to I Am Not A Stalker for the image of Bradley Video.

Visiting the Scream filming locations

Visiting the Scream filming locations, a shot of Healdsburg downtown

With the exception of three scenes – Sidney’s bedroom, Principal Himbry’s office and the high school bathroom – the entirety of Scream was filmed on location. Once you’re in Sonoma County you can explore most of the sites without permission. Several homes sit on private properties that require homeowner consent before visiting.

Travel and accommodation options

Airports and public transportation.

The closest major airport is San Francisco International. Sonoma County Airport located in Santa Rosa offers direct flights from eleven locations in the US. Of course, you can connect from elsewhere at those departure airports too.

From there, you can rent a car – you can book in advance thru Qeeq or try DiscoverCars.com to find a better price than going directly to the main car rental companies.

Take the bus

You can take a shuttle bus up to Sonoma County which takes around 2.5 hours and costs $48 with multiple drop-off options.

A cheaper option is the Greyhound or Amtrak that takes you from San Francisco International Airport to Santa Rosa Transit Terminal. Find the best option on Busbud.

Hotels and lodging recommendations

Sonoma county offers plenty in the ways of budget, moderate, and luxury accommodations – it all depends on what you’re looking for.

Mid-priced option: The DoubleTree by Hilton Sonoma Wine Country

The rates are what you’d expect for a three-star hotel in the middle of wine country, around $160 per night. Plus, if taking the SFO-Santa Rosa airport shuttle you can get dropped right at its doors. And, while it boasts the same name as the hotel where the cast stayed during filming, that original site burned down in the 2017 Tubbs Fire which devastated Santa Rosa and the surrounding areas.

Luxury option: The Vintners

This is a more up-scale spot that starts at around $300 a night.

Budget option: Point Reyes Hostel

I stayed a little out of town at the Point Reyes Hostel, which was clean and affordable at around $50 a night. It’s around a 40 minute drive from Santa Rosa. You can also try a Quality Inn in Santa Rosa.

The Scream House tour

Stu's House in Scream

The only organized tour of the Scream locations currently on offer lets you experience the Victorian house at 3871 Tomales Petaluma Road – aka Stu’s house.

The entire property is now a wedding venue that’s also leased out for other tours and parties – including a group that hosts Scream-related tours. For 2023, you can visit in July and October and prices are $200 per person. You can book over at Eventbrite .

Self-guided tour tips

Preparing for your visit.

I’d recommend doing a combination of the Scream house tour along with a self-guided tour of some other key locations.

Back in 2008 when I visited the locations, there were no house tours of Stu’s abode available. Somehow, we managed to find the road below – bear in mind, this was before smartphones, GPS, etc – and I snapped this phenomenal photo that appears as if it were plucked from the movie itself:

scream movie tour

While you might struggle to see all of the locations, once you’ve visited Santa Rosa, Healdsburg and Sonoma – and once you see Stu’s house – you’ll get a feel for the movie.

Navigating the locations

I recommend breaking up a visit into two days.

  • Bradley Video, Santa Rosa
  • Tatum’s house, Santa Rosa
  • Pacific Market, Santa Rosa
  • Woodsboro Town Square, Healdsburg
  • Woodsboro Police Station, Healdsburg
  • Sonoma Community Center, Sonoma
  • Casey’s house, Glen Ellen – you might not have access
  • Stu’s house, Tomales-Petaluma Road – you can try to recreate my amazing photo up top from the roadside if you don’t opt for the tour!
  • Sidney’s house, Santa Rosa – you may also struggle to get access as it’s now behind a gated driveway.
  • If Day Two feels a little sparse – you can always visit a few other spots nearby.

Hiring a car offers the most ease to get to the more awkward spots, but local buses are an option.

Safety and etiquette while visiting

The biggest note about all of these locales is noting which ones are private residences and which ones are accessible to the public. Some homeowners don’t welcome Scream fans onto their property, which is to be expected.

Places to Visit in the Area

Other horror movie locations nearby.

The Fog filming locations

Luckily, John Carpenter’s The Fog lensed in this area. An hour’s drive west and you can visit the Point Reyes Lighthouse in Inverness where Stevie hosts her radio show amid the creeping fog.

Hitchcock had some affection for the area, filming Shadow of a Doubt in Santa Rosa, then returning to film The Birds in nearby Bodega Bay a few years later.

Local attractions and activities

Rancho Obi-Wan, Petaluma

If you’re a Star Wars fan then I’d recommend checking out Rancho Obi-Wan , the largest collection of Star Wars items in the world. Curated and carefully tended by Steve Sansweet, the former head of Fan Relations and Director of Content Management at Lucasfilm, this archive is nearly 25 years old.

Jack London’s Wolf House, Glen Ellen

The remains of Jack London’s abode still sit, silently eroding, and they’re rather haunting.

Tell us about your visit

That’s all here for now on the Scream locations, but if you’ve any hints or tips on how you perhaps got a better view of Stu’s house or if you got permission to snap a pic of Sidney’s house – let me know in the comments!

‘Scream’ (2022): Trailer, cast and everything you need to know about the horror franchise’s latest movie

The fifth entry in the ‘Scream’ franchise heads back to Woodsboro (and it’s original title).

Scream 2022

Ghostface, Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley are back in Scream — no, not the original, but rather the fifth entry of the horror franchise. It’s been 10 years since Scream 4 was released, and this new Scream movie will look to be a continuation and rebirth, according to star David Arquette .

The original Scream took scary movies to task when the original movie came out in 1996, going meta and calling out and poking fun at many of the familiar tropes that had come to define horror films. Now, as the franchise readies its fifth entry, Scream has become the kind of benchmark horror film that it at one time took shots at. Even so, the film has attempted to keep that edge in its subsequent sequels and will hope to do so again with Scream (2022).

Here is everything we know about Scream .

What is the plot of ‘Scream’?

All of the Scream films have been centered around the group of survivors of the original killer who terrorized the teens of Woodsboro. Now, it looks like a new generation wants to put its mark on the franchise.

The new Scream takes place 25 years after the original streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro. Now, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.

The trio of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley will reunite as they try and stop the murderous Ghostface once and for all.

Who is in the ‘Scream’ cast?

As they have for each Scream film to date, Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courtney Cox will all reprise their roles as Sidney, Dewey and Gale. The trio of characters have been through a lot together, so you can bet they wouldn’t mind passing the baton off to a new generation, and they may finally get that chance with Scream .

The new group of Woodsboro teenagers being terrorized by Ghostface include Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter; Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter; Dylan Minnette as Wes Hicks; Jack Quaid as Richie Kirsch; Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin; Sonia Ammar Liv McKenzie; Mikey Madison as Amber Freeman; Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin; and Kyle Gallner as Vince.

A new video feature introduces the new characters to the franchise, which you can watch below:

Also returning to the franchise is Marley Shelton as Deputy Judy Hicks.

A final poster for Scream has been released that features most of the cast and the tagline, "The killer is on this poster."

Scream 2022

Again, that's nearly the whole cast, so not whittling things down too much. Plus, with Ghostface on the poster as well, it wouldn't be inaccurate if he qualified, but would break the spirit of it. Either way, take a gander internet sleuths - can you spot the killer?

Who is directing ‘Scream’?

All four previous entries of the Scream franchise have been directed by Wes Craven, who is a horror legend having directed original versions of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes , A Nightmare on Elm Street and Red Eye . Unfortunately, Craven passed away in 2015, so someone new will be stepping behind the camera for Scream .

In fact, it’s actually two people: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The directing duo’s best known credits include the V/H/S segment “10/31/98” and the cult-hit horror-comedy Ready or Not .

When is the ‘Scream’ release date?

Scream is a horror film, so you’d think what better time to release it then in the sweet spot for horror, the weeks preceding Halloween? Well that hasn’t been Scream ’s game.

The original Scream was actually released just days before Christmas in 1996. The sequel, Scream 2 , followed the following Christmas season, while Scream 3 and Scream 4 were released in February 2000 and April 2011, respectively.

So, where on the calendar is the newest Scream falling? That would be Jan. 14, 2022. The film will have an exclusive release in theaters. As a result, by the new standard that Hollywood seems to be setting, Scream likely won’t be available for on-demand or streaming until at least 45 days after its theatrical release.

'Scream' reviews

The Scream franchise isn't played out yet, as the fifth entry of the horror franchise has been well received by critics. What to Watch's Scream review praised the movie for maintaining the sharp but humorous meta-commentary on horror and sequels, describing it as "just as spirited and sharp as Wes Craven's originals."

The majority of reviews appear to agree. Scream currently has a 79% "Fresh" score no Rotten Tomatoes and a 65 on Metacritic.

Is there a ‘Scream’ trailer?

Scream did give fans a Halloween treat, launching the first trailer for the new film on Oct. 12. The trailer sees the new film pay homage to its iconic opening scene, while also bringing back the signature trio and the new teens that Ghostface will be looking to slice up. Check it out below.

Days ahead of its Jan. 14 release date, a final Scream trailer was released, featuring early reactions from fans and critics who have seen it. Watch right here.

Everything We Know

Everything we know about scream (2022): first trailer released, paramount officially titles the film scream , announces a january 14, 2022 release date, and unveils new photos and a title treatment..

scream movie tour

TAGGED AS: Horror , movies

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s genre-bending horror franchise is getting new life with new directors, and we’ve finally got a trailer for it.

Sidney Prescott herself, Neve Campbell , will be returning to the series – and is looking forward to it. David Arquette, aka Dewey Riley, is also returning, along with co-star and ex-wife Courteney Cox, who will reprise her role as Gale Weathers. On the film’s official Instagram account ( @screammovies ), Paramount revealed the film’s official title ( Scream ), release date (January 14, 2022), and a couple of new photos, including a title treatment, and on October 12, 2021, the studio finally released the first trailer for the film, which appears to double down on the terror. Read on for all the full details.

The Old Faves: Neve Campbell is Officially Back, along with Courteney Cox and David Arquette

We can now officially look forward to  the return of Sidney Prescott  in  Scream 5 .

In a Five Favorite Films interview with Rotten Tomatoes tied to her newest project, Canadian drama  Castle in the Ground , Neve Campbell revealed she was in discussions about the new film.

“We’re having conversations – I have been approached about it,” she told Rotten Tomatoes. “The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID. You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out…. We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.”

It seems she had faith in filmmakers  Matt Bettinelli-Olpin  and  Tyler Gillett , whose most recent film was the Certified Fresh Ready or Not .

“The two directors wrote me a very touching letter about Wes Craven and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honor him, and that meant a great, great deal to me. So we’ll see. Hopefully we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it.”

Campbell added: “I’m so grateful for these films… I love Sidney Prescott. It’s always fun for me to step back in her shoes, and it’s always fun for me to see the cast come back and make one of these films again and try to make another good one.”

Then, on September 10, Spyglass and Paramount Pictures officially announced that Campbell would be returning as Sidney , removing all doubt and ending the speculation.

All of this came after Deadline recently reported  that Courteney Cox would reprise her role as news reporter Gale Weathers in  Scream 5 , which will mark her fifth time playing the fan-favorite character. Cox shared an  Instagram post  which confirmed the news.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet, otherwise known as the directing duo “Radio Silence” – more on them in a bit – said in a statement: “We can’t imagine Scream  without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney. We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the  Scream  saga!”

The Hollywood Reporter   also reported that David Arquette – who met, fell in love with, married, and ultimately separated from Cox during their time working on the series – is returning to play Dewey Riley, the Woodsboro Sheriff who has taken a beating – and more than a few stabbings – throughout the franchise. “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new,” Arquette told THR . “ Scream  has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

The New Kids: Related to the Original Killers

Scream 5 Cast

While we were all busy wondering which old favorites would be returning,   the project announced its first batch of new faces,  which will include Jack Quaid from Amazon’s superhero smash,  The Boys . The announcement came a week or so after it was announced that Jenna Ortega, who starred in the second season of Netflix’s stalker series,  You , and Melissa Barrera, who stars in  Vida   and the film adaptation of  In the Heights , had also joined the cast. According to the new trailer, it seems all the new characters are somehow “related to the original killers,” indicating they are connected to Skeet Ulrich’ s Billy Loomis and Matthew Lillard’ s Stu Macher from 1996’s Scream . Exactly how — and why they’re being targeted –remains to be seen.

It Has a Release Date

It was announced the movie will hit theaters on January 14, 2022.

AND THE REST OF WHAT WE KNOW…

The feverish anticipation for the new  Scream  movie is a whole different story than the level of buzz – or lack thereof – that surrounded the original film almost 20 years ago.

When Dimension Films announced its intention to release the original Scream in December 1996, critics declared the movie D.O.A. After all, who releases a horror movie during Christmas? But Dimension knew there were a lot of angsty teens looking for something – anything – to serve as an antidote to mistletoe and carols, and the simple question “Do you like scary movies?” ended up receiving a resounding “Yes!” Ever since it stalled out with 2011’s Scream 4 , there have been rumors of the cult franchise’s return.

It is finally coming to fruition, so here’s what we know about the potential return of Ghostface.

Wes Craven’s Baby Is in Good – and Intriguing – Hands

Horror icon Craven directed all four of the original Scream films, but sadly the legendary creator of A Nightmare on Elm Street and The People Under the Stairs passed away in 2015. It’s been announced, however, that the Scream baton is being handed to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett , the co-directors of 2019’s Ready or Not . That movie was inventive, brutal, and satirically razor-sharp – in other words, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett seem like a pretty solid pick to breathe new life into this franchise.

The duo, known as Radio Silence, released a statement saying: “It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers. Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of  Scream  to life.”

The “Jamie and Guy” they’re referring to are writers James Vanderbilt ( Murder Mystery ,  Zodiac ) and Guy Busick, who co-wrote  Ready Or Not.  If you’re wondering whether original  Scream  scribe Kevin Williamson is involved in the project… scroll down.

Yes, Scream 5 and Scream 6  Were Already Planned

David Arquette and Courteney Cox in Scream 4

While promoting Scream 4 in 2011, both Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson confirmed that they had 5 and 6 waiting in the wings, should the latest one be another hit. No plot details for either of them were ever revealed, but it was hinted that they would be the start of a new trilogy based around the survivors of part 4 . After 4 did middling business at the box office (it only grossed $38.2 million in the U.S.), the enthusiasm for another film died out.

Kevin Williamson Is Back

Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Kevin Williamson

Although he is not listed as writer on the new project as of now, Kevin Williamson has been confirmed to be back onboard at least in an executive producer role. That may turn out to be an honorary credit based on his having written all of the other Scream films and having been – alongside Craven – the driving creative force behind them, but it could also mean he’ll have a more hands-on role. It’s still unclear, but we’re pretty sure Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s Ready or Not writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy would love a stab (sorry) at writing it.

Spyglass Loves a Good Revival

Spyglass Media Group Logo

The rights to the Scream franchise rest with the newly reminted Spyglass Media Group, which is itself a comeback story . Originally founded as Spyglass Entertainment in 1998, the production firm came out swinging with its first film – the pop culture phenomenon The Sixth Sense . It bounced between distribution deals with several studios before fizzling out in 2010, when founders Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum became co-chairmen and CEOs of MGM Holdings. The company reformed in 2019 and announced that its first project would be a remake of the horror classic Hellraiser. They clearly have a “type” and aren’t afraid to retool fan favorites, which gives credence to the idea that the new Scream may be a fresh start.

Scream Never Really Went Away

Scream: The TV Series

(Photo by MTV courtesy Everett Collection)

Although the last film was released in 2011, the Scream legacy actually continued on in the form of an anthology TV series produced by Dimension Television and MTV. Taking place in the fictional town of Lakewood (not the films’ primary setting, which was the fictional town of Woodsboro), the series featured all new characters and aired on MTV and VH1 from 2015 until 2019. There was also a web series called Scream: If I Die that was released in 2016 and featured video confessionals from some of the characters from the series. If the new movie does continue the franchise directly, it’s unclear (and doubtful) that elements from the TV series would come into play.

It Can’t Take on Slasher Tropes Again, Can It?

The Ghostface Killer in Scream 4

(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)

By the time the original Scream came out, horror films of the late ’80s and early ’90s were mired in a loop of increasingly ridiculous cheeseball sequels featuring predictably unstoppable killers and blood-soaked Z-list actors. Scream breathed new life into horror by being self-referential and self-aware. It cleverly mocked horror movie clichés while also indulging in them. Whether it’s a remake or a reboot, the new Scream enters a world in which horror occupies a much different place than it did in 1996. With big time talents like Jordan Peele ( Get Out, Us ),  Robert Eggers ( The Lighthouse, The Witch ), Jennifer Kent ( The Babadook ,  The Nightingale ), Ari Aster ( Midsommar, Hereditary ), and Julia Docournau ( Raw ) bringing horror into art houses and the Oscars, it’s a much more difficult target for satire than Jason Takes Manhattan . The rules have changed, and it’ll be interesting to see if Scream can adapt or if it will once again try and revisit the slasher.

Scream releases in theaters on January 14, 2022.

Scream 5 (2022) Release Date, Cast and What we Know

Ghostface returns later this month..

Adam Bankhurst Avatar

The iconic slasher franchise Scream is set to finally return on January 14 with, well, Scream - a direct sequel to the events of Scream 4 that will also serve as a jumping-off point for newcomers to the series that lays the foundation for its future. (Yes, even though it’s the fifth film in the series, it is simply being called Scream.)

While Scream 5 will see the return of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, it will also be the first film not directed by the late Wes Craven. Instead, Scream will be helmed by Ready or Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom have said that Craven and Scream were the reasons they started making horror films.

To help fans get ready for Scream (2022), we’ve gathered everything we know about the upcoming slasher film, including details on the cast and crew, the answers to your biggest questions, all the trailers released so far, and so much more.

Scream 5 Release Date

Scream will be released on January 14, 2022.

How Can I Watch Scream 5?

Scream will only be available in theaters when it first premieres. While there has yet been no word as to when Scream 5 will be available on Paramount+, Variety did previously report that “Paramount will look to 30 days for most titles and 45 days for tentpoles.” This would lead one to believe that a movie of the caliber of Scream will arrive around 45 days on Paramount+ after its release in theaters.

How Long is Scream 5?

Scream has a runtime of 114 minutes or one hour and 54 minutes. This makes it the third-longest film in the series after Scream 2’s 120 minutes and Scream 3’s 117 minutes. For comparison, the first Scream and Scream 4 were both 111 minutes.

What is Scream 5 About?

Scream 5 is set 25 years after the brutal murders of the first film “shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro.” In this latest story, “a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”

Read on for all the biggest movies we can't wait to check out in 2022! (And of course, all dates are subject to change.)

Scream 5 Cast, Actors, and Crew

Scream 5 is set to bring back many of the actors and characters from the original films, including Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers/Riley, and David Arquette as Dewey Riley. There will also be plenty of new faces to join the latest entry in the thriller franchise, including Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, and more.

The returning cast members weren’t always a lock to reprise their roles, especially after the passing of Wes Craven. However, Campbell received a letter from Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett that showed how much care they were putting into this project, and that apparently helped her decide to return to the franchise.

“They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream films,” Campbell told THR. “They also expressed how blown away they are at the idea of actually getting an opportunity to make one of them and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision.”

Scream 5 Full Cast:

  • Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott
  • Courteney Cox as Gale Riley
  • David Arquette as Dewey Riley
  • Marley Shelton as Deputy Judy Hicks
  • Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter
  • Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter
  • Dylan Minnette as Wes Hicks
  • Jack Quaid as Richie Kirsch
  • Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin
  • Sonia Ammar as Liv McKenzie
  • Mikey Madison as Amber Freeman
  • Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin
  • Kyle Gallner as Vince Schneider
  • Reggis Conquest as Deputy Farney
  • Chester Tam as Deputy Vinson

While the first four Scream films were directed by horror legend Wes Craven, he unfortunately passed away in 2015 at the age of 76. For this latest entry, Ready or Not’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be leading the charge. The Amazing Spider-Man’s James Vanderbilt and Ready or Not’s Guy Busick wrote the screenplay and original Scream writer Kevin Williamson - who also created the characters - is serving as an executive producer.

How Many Scream Films Have There Been?

Scream (2022) is the fifth entry in the long-running thriller franchise that began in 1996. There was also an anthology TV series that had three seasons and ran from 2015-2019.

Is Scream 5 a Reboot?

While the latest Scream is meant to be a “relaunch of the franchise,” it is also a direct sequel to the events of 2011’s Scream 4.

Who Is the Killer in Scream 5?

One of Scream’s latest posters gives us the ultimate tease and promises, “the killer is on this poster.” This means one of our beloved returning characters or any of the newcomers have a chance at making Woodsboro a terrifying place once more. If you're ready for spoilers now that the movie's out, get the full story in our Scream Ending Explained feature.

What It's Really Like Inside The Iconic 'Scream' House

It's nearly identical to how you remember it.

scream house

UPDATE October 8, 2019 12:45 p.m.: This might be your last chance to see—and party—inside the iconic Scream movie home. According to TMZ , party organizers Anthony Masi and Nate Ragon have revealed that this is the last year for their horror movie-themed bash after renting out the house for $10,000.

“As we stated during Scream Comes Home, the owners have in fact moved back into the house and, with the exception of hosting a few weddings, they live there most of the year,” Masi and Ragon revealed on the event’s website . “We were lucky enough to be able to secure the home again for this party on Halloween night!”

Tickets for the Scream Halloween event are going for $199 a person, and only for horror movie fanatics who are 21 and older. If you want to get a closer look at the home and maybe even run into Ghostface, you'll want to act fast—there are only 150 tickets available.

ORIGINAL STORY October 18, 2018 5:41 p.m.: You know Stu's house from Scream ? The isolated mansion where a bunch of high schoolers decide to party regardless of a killer on the lose? Ah, yes, that house. It's iconic for anyone who loved the '90s thriller—and if that just so happens to be you, you can rent the house on Airbnb and live like you're Sidney Prescott.

The house is located at Spring Hill Estate , a 300-acre property in Tomales, California, that hosts weddings and events. The estate is located on top of a hill, and while the Scream scene might have been terrifying , the property is gorgeous, with the kind of picturesque view that kinda sorta makes the most head-scratching part of the movie make sense. ( Who cares about the threat of a killer, when you've got this killer view, amirite?! )

Sky, Natural environment, Grassland, Ecoregion, Plain, Savanna, Steppe, Herd, Grass family, Horizon,

There are three different properties on the estate that guests can rent, including The Cottage and The Bassett Farmhouse . But the home that will forever be the Scream house to you is called the Victorian Elegance. It goes for $1,500 per night and can host up to 16 guests with its spacious five bedrooms and four bathrooms.

Home, Property, House, Roof, Building, Real estate, Siding, Estate, Residential area, Cottage,

While many films use an exterior of a home and then shoot the interior elsewhere, likely in a studio, Scream actually filmed inside of the Victorian Elegance, so each room is nearly identical to how you remember it in the movie. You know this entry way...

Property, Room, Building, Lobby, Stairs, Interior design, Ceiling, Real estate, House, Home,

And the kitchen. Oh man, the kitchen.

Countertop, Room, Property, Furniture, Cabinetry, Interior design, Kitchen, Building, Home, Ceiling,

Spring Hill Estate is a popular wedding venue and, regardless of how horrifying Stu's party was, the weddings thrown on the property are quite stunning.

And if you're looking for something to do this Halloween, you can attend the two-day Halloween party being held at the house by Scream super fans Anthony Masi and Nate Ragon. They spent $22,000 to rent it out and tickets range from $200 to $1,750. At the $200 level you have general admissions, but for nearly $2,000 you can spend the night.

It looks beautiful, really, but if I stayed the night I think I would just hear "hello, Sidney" in my head all night long.

Critic Reviews for Scream

Audience reviews for scream.

I was skeptical at first but have to admit it's a fresh take on a great movie series and it has the right kind of twists and turns. And, the veteran cast mixes well with the newcomers. I enjoyed it! 03-06-2022

scream movie tour

The first Scream film from 1996 is one of my favourite films in the horror genre by far. I've enjoyed all of the sequels to varying degrees for the most part, but none of them have ever captured the full essence of what made the original so special, at least to me. 2022's Scream is now playing in theatres and I can easily say that this is the most fun I've had with this franchise since the original. To me, this franchise fires on all cylinders when the cleverness works really well and I would absolutely say that Scream (2022) does just that. Here's why, especially if you're a fan of this franchise, Scream (2022) is a must-see.  It has been 25 years since the events of the original film. Sidney Prescott has moved out of the town of Woodsboro, as well as the rest of the main cast (for the most part). A new group of characters lead this film and once again, it's all about figuring out which one of them is the killer. This premise has now been done five times, but I have to admit that the dialogue throughout this film had me laughing on multiple occasions. It just felt very fresh in terms of entertainment today. I was skeptical that this would feel like just another Scream sequel with no purpose, but there is a specific scene that pretty much explains why this movie was made and I loved every second of it.  Without giving anything away, Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) is the character who is focused on the most, along with her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega). Their connection to the franchise is what really made me enjoy this film as much as I did. The clever twists, returning characters, and quippy dialogue all sold me, but it really came down to the fact that this film brought the franchise full circle. These films have always been about poking fun at the horror genre, sequels, trilogies, remakes, etc., and where they go with this one had me in stitches. I honestly didn't think a movie like this would work as well as it did, but I'm so happy they pulled it off. The return of Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox), and Dewey (David Arquette) was nice to see, but I'm happy they weren't just there to be there. They all had a purpose and none of them wanted to get back into it at first. The way this film plays out is something you've seen a lot in franchises lately, but that's the point, so it worked very well. In many ways, I'd compare this film to Doctor Sleep, in the way that it felt like a sequel to The Shining, but also shared a lot of similarities to its predecessor. For fans, this film delivers the goods, plain and simple. Overall, Scream (2022) is an absolute blast to watch. From the bloody kills to the extremely clever dialogue, I was laughing and on the edge of my seat the whole time. This is a film I didn't really want and didn't think would be any good, but I'm so happy it was made. They proved me wrong, but I also felt like this film put a bow on the franchise, which is why I'm confused why they're diving back in so soon, having recently greenlit a Scream 6. Regardless, Scream (2022) is well worth seeing.

The fun of the Scream franchise has been its meta-textual commentary, wry jabs at horror, and the guessing game of who the killer culprit(s) could be, and Scream 5 or Scr5am (what it SHOULD be called) is a good-fun B-movie that knows precisely what it wants to be and plays to the strengths of the franchise. We haven't had a Scream sequel since 2011, and the landscape of horror has changed as well as the landscape of multi-media entertainment. There are new satirical horizons to be targeted. This is the first Scream after the death of legendary horror director Wes Craven, but it's in good hands with the directors and writer of 2019's bloody excellent Ready or Not. The fun, knowingly goofy elements are retained, and the filmmakers clearly have love for what they're sending up. There's a sequence of languishing shots of a character opening fridge doors and pantry doors and I felt everyone in my theater tense for the eventual reveal of the killer on the other side. Moments like these are the good kind of tension-release giggle that Scream can get away with. The plot is sufficient to gather the "legacy characters" back to the site of the original murders for a new stab at rewriting the movie franchise. There's even some plot elements that are surprisingly resonant and deeper for a satirical slasher franchise, like tear-filled discussions over loss, abandonment, mental illness, and personal responsibility. There's a sister-to-sister reconciliation that plays like a straight drama, and it plays well. There's nothing terribly gruesome or memorable about the kills, and some of the meta-commentary can feel like talking in circles, especially as characters knowingly enact scenes from the original. It's a copy of a copy, meant to mock Hollywood's reboots, but it's still a copy of a copy. Sometimes the knowing winks are obvious, like a shower sequence recreating Hitchcock's angles, and sometimes the potential homage feels lost in translation. Still, Scream 5 is a fun, ironic, bloody hoot of a movie, and for fans of the franchise a more welcomed return to the creative heights of the original movie. Nate's Grade: B

Attention 'Scream' Fans — You Can Now Visit Stu's House IRL

Chrissy Bobic - Author

Oct. 29 2021, Published 11:00 a.m. ET

What's better than watching your favorite horror movie over and over each Halloween season? Visiting the house that was featured in it, of course. If you're one of the millions of Scream fans who can quote the original movie like it's nobody's business, you'll be happy to know that Stu's house is real. And if you'd like to see the place that was used for the final bloody party scene in 1996's Scream , you can visit the location yourself.

Where is Stu's house from 'Scream'?

In the movie, Stu's house is in the fictional Woodsboro, Calif. in the middle of nowhere. In real life, Stu's party house is located in Tomales, Calif., 70 miles north of San Francisco.

Although parts of Scream were shot on sets, other scenes are filmed in real buildings that were already standing prior to filming.

Although Stu's house isn't haunted, there are stories about people dying in the house before filming began in 1996. In the Behind the Scream documentary, Matthew Lillard, who plays Stu, says two people died in the house before it was used for the movie.

"It's kind of, like, an eerie house," he says in the documentary. "Actually, two people have died in this house. Literally, two people have died in the house. So coming up the hill and you're doing a Wes Craven film and somebody tells you, 'Oh, by the way, two people have died in the house,' it brings on an entirely new thing."

According to the New York Post , however, the two people who died in the house weren't murdered at the hands of two disgruntled teenage boys (like the plot to Scream ). Instead, Dirt reports that the original owners of the Scream house, Jack and Carolyn MacPhail, died from illnesses unrelated to the house itself.

The famous 'Scream' house was briefly an Airbnb.

Prior to the 2021 Halloween season, David Arquette, who plays Dewey in all of the movies, was part of a Scream promotion offering a few lucky fans the chance to stay in Stu's house. Per the Airbnb listing, the $5 stays included classic '90s snacks like Jiffy Pop and the chance to get a call from Ghostface on a landline phone.

It doesn't look like Stu's house from Scream is still an Airbnb, though. The house is situated on land that's part of what's called the Spring Hill Estate. It's a wedding venue for most of the year.

And even though most of the weddings featured on the venue's website are full of Pinterest-perfect palace settings and centerpieces, you have to expect that some horror film buffs have taken advantage of the fact that you can get married at Stu's house.

'Scream 5' revisits the former party house.

Although Stu dies at the end of the first Scream , the trailer for 2022's Scream (which fans have dubbed Scream 5 ), shows Sidney and Gale back at Stu's house. There's also a shot in the trailer featuring one of the new characters in Stu's old house, leading fans to believe she now lives there.

Scream 5 's plot also suggests that the new Ghostface (or Ghostfaces, plural, because history could repeat itself here) is killing people related to the former victims.

Exactly how Stu's old house will factor in (beyond as the home of one of the possible Scream 5 victims) remains to be seen. But longtime fans are here for the ride.

Scream watch order: How (and where) to watch the Scream franchise in release and chronological order

Want to get started on watching the Scream film series? Here’s how to do it!

Hello Sidney. What’s your favorite scary movie.

If anybody ever begins their phone conversation that way, my advice is to hang up immediately and run for your life. It’s a good life lesson from the Scream film series. The slasher flick franchise blends horror with meta-commentary. It has become one of the most beloved horror film franchises of the post 21st century. The killer Ghostface has become one of the most recognizable masks on the planet.

If you’re looking to get into the Scream franchise, but aren’t sure where to start, then Popverse has you covered. From chronology to canon, here is everything you need to know before watching Scream.

How to watch Scream in release order

Cropped Scream poster featuring cast of characters

If you’re looking to start watching the Scream franchise and want to go in release order, here is how you would do it.

  • Scream (1996)
  • Scream 2 (1997)
  • Scream 3 (2000)
  • Scream 4/Scre4m (2011)
  • Scream: The TV Series (2015)
  • Scream: Resurrection (2019)
  • Scream (2022)
  • Scream VI (2023)

How to watch Scream in chronological order

Ghostface in Scream 2

If you prefer watching the Scream franchise in chronological order, here is how you would do it. You’ll note that it’s mostly the same as release order. The only difference is we’ve separated the television projects from the film series. The television show takes place in its own continuity, with no connections to the film series. In fact, the first iteration of the television series didn’t have the rights to the iconic Ghostface mask, but that changed when it was retooled for Scream: Resurrection.

Do I need to watch any of the other movies before starting Scream 2022?

Ghostface in Scream (2022)

The 2022 Scream film acts as a soft reboot of the franchise. That’s why it was titled Scream, instead of Scream 5. Like most films in this series, this one gives a meta-commentary on scary movie tropes, including Hollywood’s trend of soft reboots. The film follows many of those friends, including introducing a new cast of characters, bringing back legacy characters, and honoring the past while passing the torch to a new generation.

Do you need to watch any of the other Scream films to understand it? Honestly, it would help. While the film tries to act as a new beginning for the series, it draws heavily on the events of the first three films (while mostly ignoring Scream 4). If you like slasher flicks, you can probably watch Scream (2022) and have a good time, but to fully understand the plot you will need to watch the original films first.

Where else has Ghostface appeared? Are those appearances canon?

Ghostface in Call of Duty

Ghostface’s distinctive look is one of the most recognizable images associated with slasher films. The iconic mask transcends the Scream franchise and remains a popular costume choice every Halloween. Due to his popularity, Ghostface has made a few appearances outside the Scream franchise.

The horror video game Death by Daylight features the killer, who is renamed The Ghost Face. Aside from the name and mask, this killer has no relation to the Scream saga. Ghostface is also available as a skin in the popular multiplayer game Among Us . It goes without saying, but Ghostface’s appearance in Among Us is not canon.

Ghost Face also appears as a playable character in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Call of Duty War Zone . Roger L. Jackson even reprised his role as Ghostface’s voice. Despite Jackson’s involvement, Call of Duty is not canon to the Scream franchise (which is one of the oddest sentences I have ever written for Popverse).

Ghost Face is featured in two novels written by R.J. Torbert, The Face of Fear and No Mercy . The novels follow the killer as he goes on a murdering spree. In other words, a slasher flick in book form. Torbert was the first person to refer to the mask as Ghostface during the development of the first Scream film. Due to complex licensing issues, the company known as Fun World owns the rights to the Ghost Face design and name, but not any of the original characters or events associated with the Scream franchise. Torbert’s Ghost Face novels were written with permission from Fun World, so while they are technically official, they are still not canon to the Scream franchise.

Is Scream based on a true story?

No, Ghostface isn’t real, but the premise of the first movie was partially inspired by a real-life serial killer. Danny Rolling was a serial killer who the media nicknamed the Gainesville Ripper. Rolling murdered 5 students in Gainesville, Florida before committing a triple homicide in Shreveport, Louisiana. Almost all of Rolling’s victims resembled his mother.

Rolling did not wear a mask or taunt his victims over the phone. However, his fixation on his mother and his choice of murder weapon (knife) inspired Kevin Willaimson when he created the character Billy Loomis for the first Scream screenplay.

If the existence of a real-life Scream killer frightens you, then you can rest easy. Rolling was arrested in 1990 after robbing a supermarket. After an investigation, Rolling confessed to murdering 8 people. He was given the death penalty and was executed by lethal injection in 2006.

Where can I watch Scream?

Scream VI

Now that you know which films to watch, here is where you can watch them. As of this writing Scream (1996), Scream 2, and Scream 3 are available to stream on Max. Scream 4 is available to stream on Peacock, Scream (2022) and Scream 6 are available on Paramount+ . Yes, that’s three different streaming services. Keep in mind that this can change as licenses expire.

As of this writing the Scream television series isn’t available on any streaming service, but it can be purchased as physical media, or as a digital purchase/rental.

As for the rest of the films, if you don’t want to subscribe to multiple streaming services, and you prefer owning digital copies, then you’re in luck. The complete Scream saga is available on a variety of video-on-demand platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, and more.

“It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, Scream, was directed by the legendary Wes Craven,” wrote Williamson on Instagram. “I never would have predicted what it would become. Or that I would be directing the seventh installment of the franchise.”

Plans for the seventh Scream shifted dramatically when Spyglass fired star Melissa Barrera over posts regarding the Israel-Hamas War, which the company saw as antisemitic. Also out, after starring in the last two films, is Jenna Ortega, who departed due to scheduling conflicts.

Hitting theaters in March 2023, the most recent Scream installment took in over $168M worldwide, breaking the record for the highest domestic box office gross in the franchise, at $108.1 million. A release date for Scream 7 hasn’t yet been announced.

Fans Are Theorizing About Scream 7’s Opening Kill, And I’ve Got My Own Idea About Who Ghostface Should Murder

Scream 7 is in development, and fans are debating who the opening kill might be.

Ghostface in Scream VI

The horror genre has been thriving for years now, with fans like me enjoying the current renaissance. Some of the best horror movies returned to theaters with new sequels, including the beloved slasher Scream . After recent movies like Scream VI broke records for the franchise , Paramount ordered a seventh movie. Fans are debating who the opening kill of Scream 7 might be, and I've got my own idea about who Ghostface should murder.

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, as the project is still fairly early in its development process. But news that Neve Campbell is returning as Sidney Prescott has fans hyped for the upcoming horror movie , and theorizing about what director Kevin Williamson might be bringing to theaters. But I personally like my idea better. Let's break it down.

Josh Segarra as Danny in Scream VI

Some fans think Josh Segarra's Danny is doomed.

The last two Scream movies (which are streaming with a Paramount+ subscription ) largely focused on the Carpenter sisters. Scream 7 introduced a new love interest for Melissa Barrera's Sam, with Josh Segarra playing "hot neighbor" Danny. Some fans on Reddit think he might be the opening kill, possibly inspired by Cotton Weary dying in the first scene from Scream 3 . As one fan posted:

The opening kill will probably be Danny, considering his role is similar to Cotton from Scream 2, who dies in Scream 3, the opening, and since Scream 5 is similar to Scream 1, Scream 6 is similar to Scream 2, Scream 7 will probably be similar to Scream 3.

It should be interesting to see if Scream 7 ends up having connective tissue to the third movie. Fans noticed how S cream VI mirrored Scream 2 by taking the surviving characters out of Woodsboro to a new location for college. And as such, some folks think a Cotton-inspired opening kill is coming in the next film.

Of course, Danny isn't the only name being tossed around as the possible first kill for Scream VI . And with OG writer Kevin Williamson behind the camera for the upcoming sequel, it feels like just about anything could happen... including killing legacy characters in the first scene.

Hayden Panettiere as Kirby in Scream VI

Could Hayden Panettiere's Kirby die so quickly?

Scream fans were thrilled when Hayden Panettiere returned as Kirby Reed in Scream VI , as many of us didn't believe she actually died in the fourth movie. She managed to survive the ending of Scream VI , opening the door for another appearance. But some people think her time might be cut short as the opening kill for the next movie. As another redditor theorized:

Kirby - I think for a lot of the same reasons as number 1. The shock factor and the fact they would kill a loved character would really set the tone for the movie. Could mirror how Cotton was killed in 3.

Clearly fans think that Scream VI will be inspired by Wes Craven 's third movie, which ended the original trilogy of films. Sine Williamson is at the helm, this seems all the more likely. Still, I think another legacy character should be the first kill in the next installment of the franchise.

Heather Matarazzo in Scream (2022)

Heather Matarazzo's Martha Meeks should be the opening kill.

For my money, I think that Martha Meeks would be the best choice for the opening kill of Scream VI . Her death would seemingly set ripples through the characters of the franchise. Perhaps with Dewey already dead, this would inspire Sydney to return to Woodsboro to once again duke it out with Ghostface.

What's more, Martha's death would definitely hit home for her kids, Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding respectfully. And since Heather Matarazzo returned for a small role in 2022's Scream , it seems logical that she might be back. And that actress has experience as a scream queen, including her role in Hostel 2 .

We'll just have to wait and see what Kevin Williamson and company have up their sleeves for Scream 7 . While we wait, check out the 2024 movie release dates .

Scream 7 Plot Details Reportedly Revealed

New details have been revealed about the characters and plot of the upcoming horror sequel, Scream 7.

Scream 7 is shaping up to be a family affair. New plot details for the meta-slasher sequel have emerged, revealing that Sidney Prescott's family will be the main targets of Ghostface.

According to trusted insider Daniel Richtman (via X ), "They are looking to cast Sid's two kids. It seems like the movie will focus on Sid's family as all 4 (her, her husband and 2 kids) are listed as leads." These plot details seemingly confirm that Scream 7 will not feature any of the characters introduced in the legacy sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), particularly the Core Four. Instead, the franchise will focus back on its original lead, Sidney Prescott, with Neve Campbell returning to the role after the character was absent in Scream VI .

Scream: Radio Silence Discusses Leaving the Franchise Amid Behind-The-Scenes Drama

While Campbell is so far the only actor officially attached to Scream 7 , franchise veterans Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey are reportedly also in talks to return. Cox, who is the only actor besides Ghostface voice actor Roger L. Jackson to appear in all six Scream installments, would be reprising her role of journalist Gale Weathers, whereas Dempsey would be stepping back into the shoes of Detective Mark Kincaid, who appeared in Scream 3 (2000). In the previous two Scream movies, it was revealed that Sidney had rekindled her relationship with Mark off-screen and the two were now married with children.

Scream 7 Was Originally Going to Look a Lot Different

While Scream fans are excited about Campbell's return to the franchise, the seventh movie wasn't originally going to focus on Sidney. Instead, Scream 7 was going to wrap up the Carpenter Sisters storyline that began in 2022's Scream . However, after voicing her thoughts on the Israel-Hamas war on social media, Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7 , prematurely ending Sam Carpenter's story within the franchise. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that Jenna Ortega would also not be returning as Sam's younger sister, Tara Carpenter, due to a scheduling conflict with Wednesday Season 2.

Scream Star Explains Why the Franchise Won't Give in to a Popular Fan Request

With the two new leads of the Scream franchise out of the picture, Spyglass went back to the drawing board to rework the upcoming sequel. In March 2024, Campbell's return was announced, alongside news that original Scream writer and franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson would direct the untitled sequel from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. At the time of writing, it is unknown when production will begin on the highly-anticipated sequel.

Melissa barrera's scream 7 exit means 1 legacy character's return would make no sense.

Scream 7 can no longer bring back a legacy character who came back in the reboot movies, all due to Sam Carpenter no longer being around.

  • Billy Loomis's return in Scream 7 is out of place without Melissa Barrera's character, Sam.
  • Billy's absence kills hopes for Stu Macher's return as another legacy character in Scream 7.
  • Bringing back legacy characters like Stu and Billy may no longer make sense without Sam Carpenter.

Scream 7 continues to face a couple of challenges, including the return of a reboot character whose appearance would no longer make sense, despite being a legacy character. The Scream saga is expected to come to an end (again) with Scream 7 , the closing chapter in the reboot trilogy. However, Scream 7 has gone through major obstacles with the firing of Melissa Barrera , Jenna Ortega dropping out, and director Christopher Landon leaving the project. Although Scream 7 now has a new director thanks to franchise creator Kevin Williamson, the film still has some major challenges to overcome.

With the reboot’s Final Girls, Sam (Barrera) and Tara (Ortega), no longer around to lead the trilogy’s final movie, Scream 7 is bringing original Final Girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) back after she skipped Scream 6 . With Campbell returning, rumors quickly began to emerge about the possible return of other legacy characters, with the ones expected to join Sidney being Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Scream 3 ’s Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), Sidney’s husband. However, one legacy character who returned in the reboot can no longer return as it wouldn’t make sense anymore.

What Neve Campbell's Return Means For Scream 7: Can It Save The $913M Horror Franchise?

Billy loomis’ return in scream 7 is out of place without melissa barrera’s sam, billy loomis was revealed to be sam’s biological father.

Before Scream 7 went through a whole creative reset, Billy was expected to return in Scream 7 as there are many unanswered questions about Sam and her link to Billy.

Scream 2022 had a couple of surprises for fans of Wes Craven’s Scream movies, and one of the biggest ones was the return of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Billy was killed by Sidney at the end of Scream after he and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) revealed themselves as the Ghostface killers, but Scream 2022 brought him back through hallucinations. Sam was revealed to be Billy’s biological daughter, and she had some unnamed mental health problems that made her have hallucinations of Billy telling her to continue his legacy.

Before Scream 7 went through a whole creative reset, Billy was expected to return in Scream 7 as there are many unanswered questions about Sam and her link to Billy. However, now that Barrera is no longer part of Scream 7 , bringing Billy back wouldn’t make sense as Sam was the one who had hallucinations of him. Ulrich is aware that Billy doesn’t really have a place in Scream 7 anymore, saying that he doesn’t “ really see a way that happens ” and that he imagines he’s “ probably out of it ” now that Barrera is no longer part of the cast.

Billy Loomis Not Returning In Scream 7 Kills Hopes For Another Legacy Character’s Return

Without billy, another legacy character’s return is impossible.

Despite Stu being killed in Scream after Sidney threw a TV on his head, fans have theorized for years that he could have survived.

Billy Loomis’ return in Scream 7 made way for speculation and theories on the possible return of another legacy character: Stu Macher. Despite Stu being killed in Scream after Sidney threw a TV on his head, fans have theorized for years that he could have survived and could return as a Ghostface killer at some point. Stu’s return would have been somewhat believable if done in the same way as Billy: through Sam’s hallucinations. However, just like with Billy, without Sam, Stu’s return would make no sense .

Stu’s return in the Scream reboot trilogy is now even less likely with Kevin Williamson directing Scream 7 , as he has already said that Stu is definitely dead. Scream 7 might bring other legacy characters back in addition to Sidney and Gale, but Billy Loomis and Stu Macher can no longer return without Sam Carpenter.
