DAY 1. Arrive Chatham Islands

On arrival to the Chatham Islands, we are met by one of our hosts, Greg or Rosemarie Horler and we are transferred to our accommodation which is located 9km south of the main township Waitangi. You will have time to unwind, relax and take in the great sights from the accommodation with the possibility of a walk along the coastal rocks before the evening meal.

DAY 2. North East

Today we head to the North East of the island. First we stop at Ocean Mail Scenic Reserve and enjoy a picnic lunch followed by a walk in the DOC reserve where we learn about the regeneration of the wetlands. From here we visit Hapupu National Historic Reserve – home of the Dendroglyphs (Moriori tree carvings). Afterwards, we travel on to Skirmish Bay, the place of the first landing of Europeans in 1791 and visit the site of the missionaries and whalers. Our last visit of the day will be to the only accessible seal colony at Port Munning.

Tonight, like every night our hosts treat us to a lovely meal at the lodge.

DAY 3. North West

Today we travel to the North West of the Island to the fishing village of Port Hutt. On the way, we stop to view the five sided Basalt Columns (one of only two sites in the world). Continuing on, we visit the Moravian Missionaries stone cottage at Maunganui, this was built around 1866 by German missionaries. From here we travel to Waitangi West beach, which is the most westerly point on the Island before making our way back to the lodge.

DAY 4. South and East

After breakfast we travel further South to Awatotara for a bush walk. This walk takes us out through native bush to the rugged coastline. We then head to Henga Farm for another lovely walk out to Long Beach through the sand dunes. Our last visit for the day is at the Admiral Gardens - a beautiful garden created for birds, bees and butterflies.

DAY 5. Middle

After breakfast we travel East. First we visit Kopinga Marae (meaning ‘Grove of Kopi Trees’ where Moriori would often hold large gatherings) for morning tea and an informative talk on the history of this special place. We then travel onwards to Owenga to view the statue of Tommy Solomon, the last full blooded Moriori. Then in the afternoon we visit the museum and wander take a wander around the town.

DAY 6. You Choose

Today is your choice; either opt to do a 4WD adventure on Pitt Island (minimum numbers required) or alternatively, relax at the lodge, or go for a visit to the local museum, craft shop and other places around Waitangi Township.

DAY 7. The North

Today we travel North. The north of Chatham Islands is where spread white sand beaches are offset by aquamarine waters. First we stop to visit Te Whanga lagoon which fills the Chatham Island torso, home to hundreds of black swans. Here, you can find fossilised shark teeth at Blind Jim’s Beach. We also visit the Nikau Bush Conservation Area - an area that contains 19 hectares of lowland broadleaved forest and since it was fenced, regeneration has been prolific. Aftwerwards we head out to Cape Young which is home to Wharekauri station, this literally means “kauri house” and was first used in the 1830s as the name of the Moriori coastal village where some Maori living with Moriori at the time built a house from kauri timber salvaged from the beach. From here we can also check out Splattered Rock - an interesting volcanic rock formation.

DAY 8. Homeward Bound

After breakfast you will be transferred back to the airport for your flight back to Auckland. When back in Auckland, you will be met by your shuttle and returned home.

The pick of the Chathams!

The Lodge is perfectly laid out on their working farm, which is on the coast just 15 mins out of Waitangi. All bedrooms along with a well appointed guest lounge are downstairs, meals are upstairs where guests can enjoy the expansive views while dining in an informal friendly setting.

Our hosts Greg and Rosemarie are a perfect team - Greg was our driver/tour guide each day, sharing the history and incredible sights of the Chathams. On our return to the Lodge we were greeted with a roaring fire, our rooms all serviced then treated to an excellent 3 course evening meal. Delicious picnic lunches were part of the package, which were varied and included home baking along with fresh fruit.

After travelling and exploring for the week, we decided that we were staying in the pick of the accommodation on the Chathams.

"We had a fantastic time in the Chatham Islands. We saw so much and learned so much about the history, geology and geography of the place. Our Tour Manager Anne was amazing who helped when needed and was very encouraging and fun. Tour Itinerary

This is a preliminary itinerary, and due to weather, tides, and other factors, activities may not necessarily be in this order. However at tours end we endeavour to have accomplished the entire itinerary.

(Activities may be deleted or added too, at guides discretion on the day.)

  • Check-in, Domestic Terminal at Airport, one hour before departure.
  • All bags will be named and tagged at check-in to enable Hotel Chathams to place them in your room awaiting your arrival. Please keep anything out of your bag that you may wish to use during the day, e.g. camera, shoes, jacket etc. You won’t see your luggage until this evening.

Please don’t check in until you have met your Tour Leader, so that you can be accounted for, and get your name tag & luggage label.

  • The Chathams are part of New Zealand so there are no border controls or formalities on arrival. You could however bring your passport (even an old one) in the hope of getting a CHATHAM ISLAND franking stamp from the hotel.
  • During the flight you may like to put your watches forward. The Chathams are 45 minutes ahead of NZ time (but 20 years behind the times).
  • Due to our very changeable weather, please pack your day bags for four seasons in one day. Comfortable footwear is recommended as you will be crossing over farmland. The water is fine for refilling your water bottles.
  • A notice board will be put up every night, with hints on your next day’s adventure.
  • Wi-Fi code is available at the lounge bar.
  • If Wi-Fi is in your unit, the code will be printed on the back off the Wi-Fi.

Another Day

  • Continental or Cooked breakfast 7.00 am.

(Optional Activities are weather permitting)

  • Day tour out to Pitt Island ($450 per person). Book on the day at the hotel.
  • Please be mindful; if you go to Pitt Island you may forgo a day’s activities on Chatham.

Pitt Island involves a lot of variables. I let the hotel look after this 100% as they are in constant communication with Pitt Island. After you arrive on the Chathams, mention your interest at the hotel office.

  • You might get there.
  • You might be able to fly.
  • You might have to go by boat.
  • The weather might allow it to happen.
  • You might not get there at all.
  • On the other hand, you might just strike it right.
  • If you can’t get there, you might just have to come back on another tour.
  • Pitt Island is always a big MIGHT.
  • It’s a great place to visit if you can.

Optional activities (subject to minimum number and weather permitting).

The hotel has its own boat, the 40 ft Nancy Kay . Up to 12 people at a time can e njoy 2-3 hrs of Chatham Island deep sea fishing, hand lining for Blue cod and Hapuka. Weather permitting, this option is complementary.  All fish generally comes back to the hotel and frozen in packs for pax to take home on the last day. Additional charters are available for up to eight keen fisher- people @ $200 pp for two to three hours. However, please note that five blue cod and one hapuka pp is the limit on these charters.

  • Times for fishing are tide dependent and on number of pax going, we can do 3 trips on same day, each going for 2-3 hours
  • Extra, fresh “free flow” blue cod can be bought at $65 per 2 kg to bring home.
  • Toni will have got numbers of persons going and arranged the fishing trip the night before.

Overall Catch Limits:

The following is hereby agreed by the signatories to this MOU:

The maximum take to be adopted in the interim until the legislation is in place is as follows:

Species Daily Catch Limit

  • Rock lobster 2

Accumulation is all at the one-day limit

Messaging to Visitors

The following messaging is adopted and promoted.

Only catch what you can eat. Catch for a feed, not the freezer.

Visitors should buy their seafood directly from the local fish processing factories or your host.

  • Those who haven’t gone fishing will have had time to look around “Downtown Waitangi” with a visit to the museum and shop (and have your passport stamped). Please note the large “Welcome Display” at the Museum, is proudly sponsored by “ Merv’s Chatham Island Tours”.

Kaingaroa – northern part of the Chathams

Depart hotel by bus

  • Drive out to to Splatter Rock. These rocks on the western end of Wharekauri Beach are from “Middle Earth” and the metamorphic glass in them sparkles in the sun.

The farm we travel through is Wharekauri Farm Station. It is 28,000 acres in extent. There are 40 miles of fencing, 12,000 sheep and 260 acres under crop.

  • Ocean Mail Reserve. Continuing to Ocean Mail Scenic Reserve we take a boardwalk and wander through this wetland area.
  • J M Barker Reserve (Hapupu) Tree Carvings, Dendrogliphs (tree carvings)

At Hapupu Historic Reserve we discover another unique archaeological site.  Carved into the bark of kopi (karaka) trees within the reserve are Moriori tree carvings – known as dendroglyphs. They are among the little evidence of pre-contact Moriori culture remaining on the island. The last remaining trees were expected to die and disappear between 2015 and 2017. However they are still there in sad shape.

  • We also visit Broughton Landing, an old mission and whaling station, and the farm “Mission Station” owned by the late Jim Muirson. Jim had 1,400 hectares, running 3,000 ewes and 350 cows. This is where we will be able to view the remains of a wrecked RNZAF Short Sunderland and a newly arrived Fokker Friendship, in the process of preservation. This particular Sunderland aircraft provided an aviation lifeline to the island until it was holed by a rock while taking off from the Te Whanga Lagoon in 1959.
  • We travel across many paddocks to reach the huge fir seal colony at Point Munning.
  • Back to the hotel, check in and freshen up for dinner at 6:00 pm.

Retire to the bar, mix with the locals and relax ‘til the small hours.

  • Continental or Cooked breakfast 7:00 am.
  • Bus will leave the hotel with everybody on board.
  • This morning we journey down to the southwestern part of the island where we visit Awatotora Reserve. This is an area of regenerating native bush, and home of the Chatham Island wood pigeon (parea), which we hope to spot.
  • Bus for Blind Jim’s Creek (fossilized shark teeth)

On the shores of beautiful Te Whanga lagoon, near Blind Jim’s Creek, careful fossicking is likely to be rewarded by the discovery of fossilised shark teeth. Around 30 million years old, these incredibly ancient objects are almost as scarce as hen’s teeth but can be found in the Chatham Islands. To find a tooth from a creature that was eating fish long before the first primate – let alone the first human – walked the earth is amazing. I am sure that by the time you leave Te Whanga Lagoon, you will all be in possession of one or many of these prized ancient fossils.

  • Nikau Reserve

Nikau Bush is a 19-hectare reserve located 1.5 km north of Blind Jim’s. It conserves broadleaf forest with a fine stand of nikau palms, the best on the island. This is the only palm native to the Chatham Islands, an even more impressive sight when flowering and bearing fruit.

  • BBQ picnic lunch and a cup of tea or coffee on the way
  • Running southwest of Waitangi, the Tuku road provides views of rich farmlands and shoal coastal waters. The stunning Tuku Reserve lies  in the valley, a great place for viewing  parea, the Chatham Island pigeon, and other bird life
  • Back to the hotel. Check in and freshen up for dinner at 6:00 pm.

Southeast and the Owenga fishing settlement

  • Continental or Cooked breakfast 7:00 am
  • Short walk and familiarisation tour of “Downtown Waitangi” with a visit to the Museum and shop, and have your passport stamped.
  • Depart for our journey out to the southeast and fishing settlement of Owenga.
  • The first stop is the Moriori Kopinga Marae, sited on the hilltop at Te Awatea. This is the only Moriori marae in New Zealand sited on the hilltop at Te Awatea. Kopinga Marae, shaped like an albatross when viewed from the air, continues to amaze visitors. Learn the culture, learn about the History of the first inhabitants fo the Island. Panoramic views across lake Huro to Waitangi and across Te Whanga to its entrance at Te Awapatiki
  • Tommy Solomon Statue at Manakau, Owenga

Tommy Solomon (7 May 1884 to 19 March 1933), is believed by most to have been the last full-blooded  Moriori, the indigenous people of the Chatham Islands.

Enjoy a few hours with Bridget and John Preece. They have a lovely bush walk and will talk you through their journey to build a TV1 Grand Designs house.

  • Return to the hotel for a day’s de-brief at the bar.

Waitangi West

  • A bus will leave the hotel with everybody on board. We travel “out west” to Waitangi West. Here we will enjoy a packed lunch and a cup of tea or coffee. We travel over part of the Waitangi West Station, consisting of 3,412 hectares carrying 10,000 sheep. Recently the station was bought by a Chinese buyer for $5,000,000.

Stone Cottage (under renovation and possibly not open) and Maunganui  Bluff

  • The cottage was built between 1866 and 1868 for the Moravian missionaries who arrived in the Chathams in 1843. These German missionaries made no converts, but had a significant input into the history and lifestyle of the Chathams. They introduced large-scale horticulture, sheep farming, shipbuilding and literacy. The cottage was built largely of local stone and timber, reflecting the missionaries’ attitudes. They were committed to the idea of being self-reliant in their own lives and, as an example to others, used only local materials.
  • We then visit the safest fishing harbour with the most shipwrecks on the island, at Port Hutt.
  • Our next stop is the amazing Basalt Columns at Ohira Bay.

Over farmland down to Ohira Bay lie massive olivine basalt columns, part of lava flows dated nearly 80 million years ago. They comprise an interesting geological formation    a series of pentagonal-shaped volcanic rock columns on the shoreline. They are not found anywhere else on the island and in only two other places in the world  ̶. Giant’s Causeway, one in Northern Ireland and one in Scotland.

  • We stop of on the way home at Admiral Farm, named after the abundant butterfly.

This is a fourth-generation Chathams property, owned by the Croon family, with a gorgeous garden featuring the eerie skeletons of dead kopi trees and great drifts of the stunning Chatham Island forget-me-not. Lois and Val Croon will be in attendance. Complimentary drinks and wine will be provided.

  • Return to the hotel for a day’s debrief at the bar.

Day 8 (Departure Day)

  • Your bus will leave the hotel at 7:30am for the airport.

The only extra that you may have to pay for on the Chathams will be your “bar tab” souvenirs or fishing trip. It would be appreciated if this can be done the night before departure.

They say you should see your own country before you rave about places you have visited around the world. The Chathams prove this to be true. When you arrive you feel you are in the New Zealand of 40 years ago. The abundance of seafood (we are talking crayfish, paua, groper and blue cod) makes you wonder why you have to go so long between bites in other parts of the country.

Please note there is of course no guarantee to the above. The accommodation at Hotel Chathams and the Travellers Rest put some of our 4 to 5-star mainland hotels to shame.

  • Complimentary, Deep sea fishing. Fish caught will be filleted, bagged and frozen and able to be all brought home.
  • Optional Day tour out to Pitt Island. A stopover on Pitt Island is also an option. All bookings are done through Hotel Chatham. (Weather dependant)

2023 Chatham Islands Excursions

chatham island tours 2023

Since 2002 these excursions to the Chatham Islands has been offered to, and enjoyed by, many Friends of Te Papa. Touring with Hamish and Chris is a rare opportunity to visit the Chathams in a safe and convivial context. The plan is to visit Chatham and Pitt Island, sea and air conditions permitting.

Anyone is welcome – you don’t have to be a geologist, a Friend of Te Papa, or a citizen of Zealandia. They are about much more than natural science. You will explore Chatham Islands history, culture and cuisine. It is a must do, if you have not yet done it!

Trip 1: Friday 25 August to Wednesday 30 August.

Trip 2: Friday 1 September to Wednesday 6 September.

Air travel ex-Wellington: with Air Chathams Accommodation: Hotel Chatham, Waitangi, Chatham Island

Capped at 20 people each, the trips are all-embracing in terms of experiencing the Chathams.

However, a certain level of fitness is required: you must be able to negotiate a wire fence in less than 20 seconds. Some people get hung up on this self-fitness test. To avoid this, attempt wire fences only in the presence of an adult.

The isolation of the Chatham Islands has created a unique Island lifestyle and society with many locals descending from Moriori genealogy.  So you can discover the rich Moriori history and culture during your stay on the Chatham Islands.

The remote location of the Chathams means there is endemic flora and fauna, found nowhere else in the world.

Chatham Islands - The way it used to be

Last Summer Departure with space available 30 March - 06 April 2024

The Chatham Islands are a special place to visit and lie 870 km east of the mainland and are 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand time. The locals are genuine, friendly and welcoming. Their isolation; changeable, moody climate; and a history that goes back to the Moriori, gives them a strong community spirit, a sense of independence and self-sufficiency that allows them to be at ease with their lot. With the Black Robin now thriving (once the world’s rarest bird), the magnificent Chatham Island’s Forget-Me-Nots, hospitality, meals and opportunity to fish for cod – this is a place to visit before you die!

“More than met expectations. Absolutely loved it” – Jack & Anne

“I enjoyed the opportunity to visit a very different part of New Zealand” – Graham & Kay

“I really enjoyed the trip – both relaxing and active” – Margaret

10 Reasons to visit the Chatham Islands

Chatham Islands

A special part of the world.

Chatham Islands

A special part of the world. Experience a unique part of New Zealand's heritage in this remote ocean-bound wilderness that will leave a lasting impression.

The Chatham Islands, New Zealand’s most eastern islands, form an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 800 kilometres (500 miles) east of the South Island. The archipelago consists of eleven islands, with only 2 inhabited.  As of 2018, the Chatham Islands have a resident population of 663 people, residing on the two largest islands, Chatham Island and Pitt Island.  They have officially been part of New Zealand since 1842.

The islands are volcanic in origin and have a rugged and windswept vista with delicate habitats that can be easily damaged by the elements and mankind. With diverse landscapes and fascinating history, the Chatham Islands are renowned for its bountiful seafood industry and conservation efforts protecting many rare and endangered species.

Life on the Chathams is unpredictable, at the mercy of nature, so always be prepared.  The kiwi saying, ’four seasons in a day’ rings true, so please ensure you travel prepared for all types of weather.  The following itinerary is a guide only, as changes can happen due to weather and availability of venues / guides.

Chatham Island

On landing, we will be greeted by our local tour guide and taken to our accommodation for the duration of the tour, right by the beach in the main settlement of Waitangi. The Hotel is a big part of Chatham Island life and there has been a hotel on this site since the 1860s.

There will be time for some photo opportunities before meeting for our Chatham Islands seafood welcoming dinner as we settle into life on the Chathams.

Accommodation: Hotel Chathams

Chatham Island - The Wild West

Chatham island (29th feb).

Our first full day on the island and after breakfast we meet our local guide and head out to explore the western side of the island. Highlights include Stone Cottage, built between 1866 and 1868 for the Moravian Missionaries who arrived in the Chathams in 1843 from Germany, and Waitangi West Station, a 3,400 hectare station that runs around 10,000 sheep. A delightful picnic lunch is organised before we visit Splatter Rock which is a most impressive example of the black basalt pillow lavas that erupted from the sea floor. The shape reflects tubular lava cooling and slumping.

Then it is back to our lovely accommodation to get prepared for another delicious group dinner - what will be on the menu tonight.

Chatham Island - Fishing (optional) – Owenga Fishing Village

Chatham island (1st march).

Today, you have the option of getting out on the water and experiencing the world-class fishing that the Chathams is renowned for. Please see the information below.

Deep sea fishing:

  • $195 pp, 2 to 3 hours, 10 pax
  • Depart approx 7.30am, returning approx 11.00am
  • All fish and paua caught will be filleted and bagged, frozen and able to be brought home
  • Quota for recreational fishing is 11 blue cod each and 11 hapuka per boat; home early if quota is caught
  • Fresh free flow blue cod or groper can be bought at $65 per 2kg, to be brought home.

Owenga Club

Today also sees us depart for our journey out to the south-east, to the fishing settlement of Owenga.  This fishing village includes a working fish factory which we will visit, plus the remains of The Anglican Church of St Barnabas.  Our guide will also show us the Moriori Kopinga Marae sited on the hilltop at Te Awatea. This is the only Moriori marae in New Zealand.   Next up, is a special lunch today at the Owenga Club , organised by the community which is a great chance to mix and mingle with the locals.

After lunch, we view the Tommy Solomon Statue at Owenga. Tame Horomona Rehe, also known by the anglicised name Tommy Solomon (7 May 1884 – 19 March 1933), is believed by most to have been the last full-blooded Moriori.  Then it’s back to the hotel for refreshments and another superb meal together.

Accommodation: Hotel Chathams ‍

Chatham Island - Pitt Island (optional) Waitangi town / South Coast

Chatham island (2nd march).

A chance today to head over to the magnificent Pitt Island - weather permitting.  Please find details below:

Pitt Island Day Trip:

  • Travel by Cessna plane
  • Depart approx 9.30am, returning approx 4.30pm

On the Chathams, we visit the Museum, Old Radio Station , Tiki Tiki Hill and head over the newly built Waitangi Wharf Drive to the South Coast. We admire the reforestation and endemic birds of the area.

We return to town and enjoy lunch at River Onion Gallery. Local photographer and artist Celine Gregory-Hunt recently renovated and invested in her beautiful property on the side of Waitangi beach, to showcase her artwork inspired by the natural beauty of Chatham and Pitt Island.

Close by, you can purchase souvenirs at Chatham Cottage Gift Shop and locally made jewellery at Dough N Go general store. This afternoon, we visit Taiko Camp where you will have a chance to learn about the albatross relocation and Taiko bird restoration projects. Another delicious meal awaits at the hotel after another memorable day.

Chatham Islands - North-East / Kaingaroa

Chatham island (3rd march).

Another day of exploring is lined up, starting with a visit to Go Wild Apiary . A bee sanctuary which houses what are believed to be earth's last known Black British honeybee.

We have lunch at Ocean Mail before some exciting afternoon activities, starting at Hapupu Historic Reserve where we discover another unique archeological site. Carved into the bark of kopi (karaka) trees within the reserve are Moriori tree carvings – known as dendroglyphs. They are among the little evidence of pre-contact Moriori culture remaining on the island. The last remaining live tree was expected to die and has done so during 2015 – 2017.

We then head to Broughton Landing - an old Mission and Whaling Station, and the farm Mission Station owned by Jim Muirson. Jim has 1,400 hectares, running 3,000 ewes and 350 cows. This is where we will be able to view the remains of a wrecked RNZAF Short Sunderland and a newly arrived Fokker Friendship in the process of preservation. This particular Sunderland aircraft provided an aviation lifeline to the island until it was holed by a rock while taking off from the Te Whanga Lagoon in 1959.

We finish the day by travelling across paddocks to reach the huge fur seal colony at Point Munning . Dinner tonight is another treat dining at the Kaingaroa Social Club for a buffet dinner ( *subject to the local community availability) then back to the hotel to rest our heads.

Chatham Islands - Te Whanga Lagoon

Chatham island (4th march).

The good times continue today as we venture out to another part of this fascinating island. On the shores of Te Whanga Lagoon , careful fossicking is likely to be rewarded by the discovery of fossilised shark teeth, around 30 million years old! To find a tooth from a creature that was eating fish long before the first primate - let alone the first human - walked the earth is amazing.

On the Western side of the lagoon you’ll find Nunuku’s cave - famous for its Moriori rock carvings of seals and birds. A delicious lunch is included again with the afternoon taking us on a scenic drive and visit to Henga Nursery where we’ll walk to Long Beach through Henga Reserve . Then it is back to the hotel for another lovely evening together, sharing and creating more memories.

Chatham Islands - Port Hutt

Chatham island (5th march).

Our final day on the island so lets make the most of it. Our day begins with a visit to the fishing harbour with the most shipwrecks on the island, at Port Hutt . Our next stop is the amazing Basalt Columns at Waitangi West.

Over farmland down to Ohira Bay lies massive olivine basalt columns, part of lava flows dated near 80 million years ago and only found anywhere in two other places in the world, Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland and Scotland. We enjoy a lovely beach walk to work up an appetite before our final group meal together.

Dinner this evening is a barbecue at Admiral Farm (named after the abundant butterfly). This is a fourth generation Chatham’s property owned by the Croon family with a gorgeous garden featuring the eerie skeletons of dead kopi trees and the stunning Chatham Island forget-me-not. The perfect location and setting for our last night on the island. Drinks and wine provided.

Chatham Islands - Home

Chatham island (6th march).

It’s time to leave the Chathams but we’ve explored the island in depth so with bags packed and fish stored in chilly bins, we board the bus and make our way to the airport. Once we’ve landed in Wellington, the coach will be there to transport us (and our fish) home.

If you are travelling to another destination, all arrangements will be made for you (and your fish) to get safely home.

LESLEY & ROB WHYTE

2023 september chatham island seafood extravaganza.

*** SOLD OUT *** Come join Girls on the Road Again founder Lesley and husband Rob on our September 2023 Chatham Island Seafood Extravaganza for our seven night, six full day (eight days including travel days) tour and of course, on this tour your bloke is welcome to join you. This is a small group tour – minimum 7, maximum 12 and on this tour there is no additional cost if you’re a solo traveller.

Lesley is incredibly familiar with the Chatham Islands, is on the Tourism Chatham Island committee, the feature photographer in Air Chatham’s inflight magazine, leads around 7-10 tours to Chatham Islands each year, works very closely with Air Chathams and Hotel Chathams to deliver you an amazing experience.

Chatham Islands scenery is beautifully raw, the green colour is unlike what you’ve seen on mainland NZ, the history is inspiring and Girls on the Road Again can’t get enough of these islands, so much so, we have to keep coming back each year. September is the season for the Chatham Island’s Forget Me Not flowers to be in bloom which is why we want you to join us and see these beautiful flowers in their full glory.

While you’re at Chatham Islands, there are lots of places we take you:

  • Splatter Rock where you’ll also be looking for the two pairs of Chatham Island’s Oyster Catcher’s who nest amongst the sand and tussock
  • Basalt Columns which has giant kelp swaying around the columns, here we watch waves crashing over the columns
  • Visit Tommy Solomon statue, hear from his grandson Maui Solomon who will guide us across the Solomon land, hearing about the restorative tree planting they’ve undertaken and finally walk to the headland to view the ”awe inspiring” headland views
  • Visit the Moriori Marae where you learn about the history of the Chatham Island Moriori
  • View Moriori tree carvings at Hapupu and understand the significance of why these were carved
  • Port Hutt to view the two ship wrecks, understand their history and importance to the island
  • Visit Waitangi West
  • Admiral Gardens for a garden tour and sumptuous seafood bbq. Bring your credit card as the gift shop here has amazing Chatham Island gifts for you to take back home
  • Wade the shallow waters at Blind Jim’s looking for fossilised sharks teeth and sea urchin spines
  • Walk across farmland to the historic stone cottage at situated at the bottom of the towering Maunganui bluff
  • South Coast – for a bit of spotting, looking for the Chatham Island’s Kereru and look out to the South where the closest land is Antarctica
  • Kaingaroa, where depending on the time of the day we watch the fishermen loading and unloading their catch
  • Point Munning where we view the masses of seals sunning themselves on the rocks and swimming in the secluded pools
  • Mission Bay whaling station ruins
  • Sunderland museum where you can see how far the restoration of the plane that crashed in the lagoon in 1959 is coming along
  • The newly opened Chatham Island Museum where you can become immersed in the island’s history
  • In your downtime visit Cottage Crafts & River Onion Cafe
  • Exploring the life of the Chatham Island Bees and endemic flora, followed by an award-winning honey tasting at Wild Apiary – here we hear about the British Black bees which produce the honey
  • Visiting Chatham Island Foods , here you have an opportunity to purchase a range of their seafoods and have shipped back home plus enjoy a tasty hot iconic Chatham Island Paua pie
  • A couple of quiz night with prizes
  • Weather permitting spend a morning out fishing for Blue Cod aboard one of the local fishing boats
  • Plus lots more.

Girls on the Road Again supports the Chatham Islands’ philosophy of leaving footprints and only taking photos – when foraging we do not take any artefacts.

This group is limited to 12 and if you are a solo traveller there is no additional cost for a room on your own.

From the time you step onboard the Air Chatham’s flight in Auckland until you step off back in Auckland, there are no other costs unless you want to buy something from one of the island’s local shops – simply pack your bag and bring your credit card. An ATM machine at the local store allows you to take cash out during their opening hours.
