The 14 Best Brewery Tours in the United States

The 14 Best Brewery Tours in the United States

words: Nick Hines

It’s hard to beat getting a beer right from the source. The flavors are simply more intense from beers kegged and canned days or even hours before consumption. Being at the source also has another added benefit: brewery tours.

Not every brewery offers brewery tours. For the ones that do, the behind-the-scenes view can be an unbeatable experience in beer appreciation (not to mention all the free samples). From California to New York, here are the best breweries to visit for a look at how the best craft beers are made.

Boulevard Brewing Co. in Kansas City, Missouri

Boulevard has three levels of tours : free public tours, the smokestack tour and tasting, and the private tour. The hour-long free tour gives you a behind-the-scenes look at one of Missouri’s best breweries, as well as a bit of history. Shell out some money for a tour, and you can get a two-hour guided tasting and food pairing (the smokestack), or a personalized tour with two full pints (the private tour).

Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii

Not everyone gets a chance to make it out to the Hawaiian islands. But if you do, you should visit Maui Brewing Co. Daily 45-minute tours lead people through the brewery, the cellar, and the packaging line for $15. Then there’s a tasting of Maui Brewing’s flagship beers at the end, a full beer of your choice, and a free souvenir glass.

Tröegs in Hershey, Pennsylvania

Like doing things at your own pace? Tröegs is the brewery tour for you. The self-guided tour path through the brewery lets people wander through the fermentation/filtration hall, the quality lab, packaging lines, and the barrel-aging room. Best of all, it’s free. For something a little more, there’s a $5 guided tour that includes a few samples and a souvenir glass.

Sweetwater in Atlanta, Georgia

Sweetwater Brewing knows how to party. Every half hour from Wednesday to Sunday there are  $12 tours  that include a souvenir pint glass and six 6-ounce samples. Walking through someone’s place of employment couldn’t be more fun.

Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, California

Stone has tours at all three of their breweries (Escondido, Richmond, Virginia, and Berlin, Germany). The tour of Stone’s home state of California is the one you don’t want to miss. For $3, you can get a souvenir tasting glass and four 4-ounce samples of beer. One of those samples is a special release beer.

Sierra Nevada in Chico, California

Sierra Nevada’s brewery in Chico has every level of tour you could imagine. There’s the self-guided tour to explore at your leisure, the educational tasting tour that only takes 30 minutes, an engineering tour, a three-hour beer geek tour, a sustainability tour, and the standard brewhouse tour.

Anchor Brewing in San Francisco

America’s first and oldest craft brewery only offers two tours a day , and only on weekdays. But don’t mistake the scarcity for quality. The tour lasts an hour and a half and includes a brief story of Anchor’s long history, a walk through of the brewery’s three floors, and a tasting session.

Allagash Brewing in Portland, Maine

Allagash offers a free tour that includes four 3-ounce pours of beer. And while it’s hard to beat free beer, the Grand Cru Tour is something to behold. It’s three hours long, and guests get in-depth knowledge about the brewing process — blending and brewing, quality control, and tasting beers straight from the barrel.

Abita in Abita Springs, Louisiana

Louisiana’s top craft brewery offers $5, 30-minute tours that include 4-ounce pours. There’s also free self-guided tours where visitors get to look over the brewery tanks. Whichever one you choose, you know there’s going to be delicious Abita beer waiting for you at the end.

Bell’s Brewing in Kalamazoo, Michigan

The original Bell’s brewery in Kalamazoo is historic. It’s also right next to the General Store — the beer garden at the Eccentric Café. After the tour through the brewery, relax and pick up a pint from the more than 40 different beer options on tap.

Samuel Adams in Boston, Massachusetts

Samuel Adams Boston Lager helped kickstart the craft beer movement. Today, Boston Beer Company is one of the biggest in the country. The first-come, first-serve tours give you an inside glimpse into how that all happened. There’s also the Morning Mash-in Tour, where you can go in early and taste exclusive experimental beers.

Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Delaware

Dogfish Head’s free, hour-long tour shows visitors how the beer is made and gives some history of the people behind 60 Minute IPA. Also, you get four healthy samples. If you go on the more involved Grain to Glass tour, you’ll also learn about the Dogfish Head distillery, where vodka and rum are made.

Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn, New York

Making it into the Brooklyn Brewery tour in the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn can be a challenge, but it’s a challenge with a worthy reward. The Small Batch Tour gives visitors a chance to see what it takes to be one of the largest craft brewers in the United States.

New Belgium Brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado

The 100 percent employee-owned New Belgium Brewery offers free 90-minute tours . Samples are included, but look ahead on your schedule if you’d like to get a look inside because the tours fill up quickly.

8 of the Best Brewery Tours in the United States

guided brewery tours near me

Brewery Tours can make for a fun activity while on vacation. It is even better when they are free or low cost! I always like to try out the different styles of beer and see how different breweries run things. It has made for some pretty eventful afternoons. The following are some traveler’s best brewery tours in the United States .

The Samuel Adams Brewhouse in Boston, Massachusetts. This Brewery offers free tours which is one reason why it is one of the best brewery tours in the United States.

Samuel Adams Brewery : Boston, Massachusetts

Hours: Monday-Saturday 11am-5pm, Closed Sundays

What makes the Samuel Adams Tour in Boston one of the best brewery tours in the United States is that it is a free tour! They have tours almost every hour and each tour lasts about an hour. The guide will first take you to a room where you learn about how the beer is made. Here, you get the chance to sample hops. Visitors are then taken to the next space where some of the smaller batches of beer are brewed. This part of the tour takes about 30 minutes.

Finally, the best part of the tour comes at the end. The tour group is taken to a small tasting room with lots of tables and chairs. Here, you get the opportunity to try 3 different types of beer. The first pour is always the traditional Samuel Adams lager. The other two rotate depending on what seasonal beers there are and what your guide decides to pour that day. When we went, it was wintertime, so we got to try their seasonal Cold Snap along with an unfiltered Pale Ale. In the end, you also get to take home a miniature glass that you used for the tasting. Not a bad tour for no cost and thus why it is one of the best brewery tours in the United States.

The barrel room at the Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, Illinois. This brewery is a unique tour and is one of the best brewery tours in the United States.

Goose Island Brewery: Chicago, Illinois

Cost: $12 for a tour

Hours: Wednesday/Thursday 12pm-8pm, Friday/Saturday 12pm-10pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm

The Goose Island Tour in Chicago is a 45-minute tour that takes visitors through several rooms in the brewery. The unique thing about this tour is that you get 3 samples throughout the tour, plus another pint at the end. Visitors also receive a pint glass. The first part of the tour shows visitors how the beer-making process works and ultimately how the beer is made. You then move into the bottling room to see how the beer gets bottled.

The next area you get to visit on the tour is where the brewmasters brainstorm ideas for new beer types and flavors. The last area you visit on the tour is the most unique part. After a quick walk across the street, you enter the barrel aging room where some of the beer is aged for a year or two. This is a different technique than traditional beer making and makes for some interesting flavors. At the end of the tour, you are brought back to the tasting room to get your souvenir glass and a pint of beer. Overall, this tour gives you a lot of bang for your buck, which makes it one of the best brewery tours in the United States.

The tokens from Brooklyn Brewery you get for going on the tour. You can turn these in to receive a pint of beer after the tour. Brooklyn Brewery is located in Brooklyn, New York.

Brooklyn Brewery : Brooklyn, New York

Hours: Saturday and Sunday every hour 1pm-6pm

The Brooklyn Brewery was established in 1988 by Steve Hindy and Tom Potter. Hindy learned the brew-making process during a six-year stay in the Middle East. When he returned to the states, Hindy and Potter decided to establish the Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn . Their signature Brooklyn Lager has been a staple since that time. Present-Day, the beers are available in over half of the United States and over thirty other countries.

On the weekends, the Brooklyn Brewery offers free tours every hour starting at 1pm until 6pm. Although the line is usually pretty long for the tour, it is well worth it for free! The tour covers the history of the brewery, the brewing science, and the history of beer. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and you get to see the brewing rooms. At the end, you receive some tokens for a pint. I enjoyed the traditional Brooklyn Lager the most.

A view of the floor of Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado. Throughout the tour, you are given plenty of delicious samples.

Avery Brewing Company : Boulder, Colorado

By Sydney from A World in Reach

Hours: Tours Mon-Fri at 4:30pm, Sat at 2pm and 3:30pm, Sun at 2pm

If you’re visiting Boulder, Colorado, consider paying a visit to Avery Brewing Company, a regional brewery known for its unique brews. At the brewery, you can take a guided tour of the brewhouse, sample some beer at the taproom, or both!

The free tours at Avery Brewing Company last for an hour and are family-friendly. One of the brewery’s lovely guides will take you through the brewhouse and the barrel-aging cellar, educating you about the history of Avery Brewing Company as well as the brewing process. Throughout the tour, you will be given samples of some of the brewery’s most popular beers. At the end of the tour, you will be given a sample of one of the brewery’s latest limited-time offerings, where you’ll be prompted to guess the flavor and inspiration of the beer before its name is revealed.

After the tour, make sure to head to the Tap Room to sample a few more of Avery Brewing Company’s offerings. If you’re hungry, they also serve lunch and dinner! Free hour-long tours of Avery Brewing Company are given every day. Private, exclusive tours can also be booked for $15 per person – these tours last for 1.5 hours.

The barrels from the Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe, Arizona. This brewery offers $5 tours on Saturdays.

Four Peaks Brewery : Tempe, Arizona

By Constance from The Adventures of Panda Bear

Cost: Tours start at $5

Hours: Tours on Saturdays at 10:30am, 12pm, and 2pm

Four Peaks Brewery is one of the best breweries in Tempe, Arizona , not only is their beer great, but their brewery tour is also insanely informative! Even though we had already been to quite a few brewery tours, we still learned something new at Four Peaks.

Starting off your tour at Four Peaks Brewery is the best part because they give you samples right away! When we visited, they provided samples of their famous white ale and Kilt Lifter, their flagship Scottish ale.

Afterwards we began to explore their brewery facility, and walked past all of their equipment from fermentation and wort tanks to their kegs and even their bottling area. We were surprised by how small their bottling area was even though they have such a high production!

They also have a special room used to age some of their select beers. This room is held at a specific temperature and we learned that certain Four Peaks beers will have a unique taste due to their barrel aging techniques.

One unique thing about the Four Peaks Brewery is that the building is haunted. The tour guides love telling stories about their (and their coworkers’) experiences in the building with all of the various spirits that reside in between its walls.

Four Peaks Brewery is definitely one of the most unique brewery tours we’ve ever done, aside from the amount we learned, it was just a fun tour overall!

The tasting room of Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This brewery is one of the most popular in the city and has lots of well known beers.

Lakefront Brewery : Milwaukee, WI

By Emmajean Snook from Snook Outta Water

Cost: $10-$12 for a tour

Hours: Mon-Fri: 12pm-7pm, Sat: 11am-8pm, and Sun: 12pm-4pm

Lakefront Brewery, situated on the east side of Milwaukee, has one of the most popular brewery tours in the city. Their beers, of course, are excellent: Lakefront has a wide variety of staple beers, perhaps best well-known for their Riverwest Stein, an amber lager, as well as small-batch seasonal beers and a gluten-free beer to try. Tours are available all week, but it’s much better to go during the weekend when the brewery is not in production, as you can get up close and personal.

Although chock full of 45 minutes of good information about beer brewing, the best part about the tours are the guides themselves. They are loud, always ready to make a cheesy joke, and partaking in beer drinking themselves, they truly do make the tour. If you really want to get the details, you can sign up for their smaller technical tours, which are led by a master brewer, capped at 15 people, and include a food-and-beer pairing experience. Of course, in either tour free beer samples are provided throughout, as well as four six-ounce pours at their Beer Hall afterward. Delicious food options, like fish fry (served every day) and cheese curds are available at their Beer Hall as well. A teeming cafeteria-style set-up, gives you the perfect venue to meet other tour-goers and beer lovers afterward.

Danielle at the Magic Hat Brewing Company in Burlington, Vermont. This brewery is Vermont's largest brewery and offers guided tours daily.

Magic Hat Brewing Company : Burlington, Vermont

By Danielle from Wanderlust While Working

Cost: $3 for a tour

Hours: Mon-Thurs: 11am-7pm, Fri-Sat: 11am-9pm, Sun: 12-5pm

Vermont is home to the largest number of breweries per capita, so it’s no surprise that some of the best brewery tours in the country can be found there. During our trip to Burlington, Vermont we had the chance to take a tour of Magic Hat Brewing Company as well as enjoy a flight and some delicious tamales in their tasting room.

Magic Hat does offer guided tours at certain times 7 days a week, but you can also do a self-guided tour at any time. Guided tours cost a nominal fee of $3 and include a video explaining the beer-making process at Magic Hat. The tour then takes you through a creative and colorful display on the history of the company and a viewing area overlooking the manufacturing floor. Their tasting room is also referred to as the “Artifactory” and serves up favorites like Magic Hat #9 along with seasonal brews and limited edition releases you won’t find in stores. We especially enjoyed the quirky vibe of the brewery out of all the breweries we tried in Burlington .

Some samples from Upland Brewing Company in Bloomington, Indiana. This brewery focuses on sours.

Upland Brewing Company : Bloomington, Indiana

By: Emily Hines from Em’s on the Road

Hours: Mon: 4pm-12am, Tues-Sat: 11am-12pm, Sun: 11am-11pm

Upland Brewing Company in Bloomington, Indiana is the third-largest craft brewery in Indiana and is especially unique because it offers two distinct brewery tours: one of their production facilities focusing on lagers and ales and their sour brewery that focuses on wood-aged sours. On the production facility tour, see how Upland’s beer goes from grain to glass, starting at the grain silo to the brewhouse, to the bottling line. When you finish the tour, enjoy a guided tasting at the dog-friendly West Side Beer Bar.

At the Sour Brewery, you’ll take a similar journey from grain to glass but the process for wood-aged sours is much longer and complex moving from different wood casks used for aging. As you follow the beer’s path, the guide will offer samples directly off the foudres. Since wood is an organic matter, different foudres impart different flavor notes on the base beer and each sample will taste different. I’d highly recommend a tasting tour of $10 so you can taste 4 of the unique sour beers when the tour is over.  It doesn’t hurt that the bar in the brewery is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for a photo opp.

I have been living out of the states for nearly 17 years, but I was surprised that I only knew of one of these brands (Samuel Adams). I grew up in Chicago, and don’t know the one there either. Love this list. Plenty of cool options.

Francesca

There are so many awesome brewery tours now a days. Goose Island as one of my favorites.

Molly

Love this post! Great to see some I’ve been to and definitely agree on 🙂

I need to visit some more breweries.

Brewery & Taproom Tours in Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh)

The local beer scene of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has taken off during the last decade, along with everywhere else in America.

Written by CraftJack | Updated 04/29/22 | 4 min read

Multi-Stop Guided Beer Tours in the Steel City

Pick a tour bus and strap in for the ride, cause the Steel City doesn't sling pints of helium beer . No, it serves some of the best craft brews in the nation.

Pittsburgh Brew Tours (City Brew Tours Pittsburgh)

"You drink, We drive" is quite the tagline for City Brew Tours a regional/multi-state brewery tour company . City Brew Tours in Pittsburgh promises an unforgettable craft beer journey around the Steel City that for $70/person, feels quite worth it. Especially so given the range of beer sampling over 3 stops, comfy transpo, and guided lessons steeped in beer culture and the local craft beer scene. Tours are offered Wednesday through Sunday.

Porter Brewery Tours

If you're down to take a mini school bus around to a few brewpubs, Porter Brewery Tours is down to be your guide. PBT offers the standard set up of 3 brewery stops, complete with music, snacks, and water. Porter Brew Tours feels slightly more casual in their approach, giving you time to enjoy 2-3 samples of beer at each brewery, while generally staying out of the way.

An arrangement is generally made to enable you to get a tour from the owner/operators of a select brewery on the tour. Always good to meet the craft artisans and get insight into their brewing process and methods.

Steel City Brew Tours

SCBT is a full service party bus that, in simple terms, connects residents and tourists with craft beer in Pittsburgh. Birthday party guests, bachelorettes, and daydrinkers alike can enjoy a multi-hour, multi-brewery tour around the Steel City for reasonable prices. They even rent out the bus for maximum fun, like tailgating at a Steelers game. Don't forget the beer brats .

Common Pittsburgh brewery stops include Grist House, Couch Brewery, and the Allegheny City Brewing Company.

Brewery, Bits and Bites Tour

'Burgh Bits & Bites Tours are more centered around food, but that doesn't mean they can't collaborate with PA Brew Tours to throw a solid beer tour to introduce folks to the local craft beer scene. The tour rolled through Bloomfield and included a stop at Church Brew Works as well. Hopefully this tour will resume again at a future date.

Tours offered by Pittsburgh Breweries

Sometimes all you want is to casually tour a brewery on your own. Low key, accessible, highly informal, just showing up to a brewery at the tour time is always a fun time. The downside is that sometimes tours fill up. Here are a few Pittsburgh breweries that offer in-person tours.

The fix must be in because a lot of these breweries charge the same fee ($25) for a tour of their production facility. That said, some of them are well worth it.

East End Brewing Company

East End Brewing comes out swinging with a tour of their "bigger, better Brewery". You start in the Brewpub with beer before you are guided through the brewery, all while discussing the history of EEBC. That means 4 samples of current brews, followed by the educational "nature" walk, followed by a filled growler's worth of East End craft beer. The tour lasts an hour, but the memory lasts a lifetime. 21+ on the tour, no exceptions.

Grist House Craft Brewery

On occasion, Grist House will offer custom tours every hour on the hour on Saturdays. Limited to 10 people. Post-tour, or perhaps pre-tour, guests can load up on Hazedelic Juice Grenades and Solar Submarines.

You can also walk about of Grist House several dollars lighter courtesy of the sweet beer swag they have available. Wearing their striped windbreaker will give you permission to tell complete strangers that you like the cut of their jib. Hitchhiker Brewing Company Brewery Tour

You can enjoy a tour on the first Saturday of the month in the Sharpsburg taproom. It includes an in-depth tour of the brewery, a beer tasting, and, some glassware you can take home. Note - it is a paid tour ($25).

Hitchhiker may be a dog friendly brewery, but we're not sure they let your puppers around the beer, so it's best to check with management before bringing Fido to the brewery for a tour of the premises.

Penn Brewery

"Pittsburgh's Microbrewery" offers guided tours at 1:00pm on selected Saturdays. The tour will run you $25 per person. Included is a 16oz beer and a t-shirt or filled growler. No, those aren't typos. A pint plus merch or more beer. We're sold!

Penn Brewery also offers VIP sessions and Private tours. The VIP session upgrades you to more beer samples and a meet-and-greet with the brewer. It's going to run you an extra $20 dollars. Private tours run up to a max of 25 guests. There is a $200 fee that covers the first 10 people, with an additional $10 per head after that. You need to book a private tour a few weeks in advance.

Threadbare Cider House & Meadery

Threadbare offers both Private Adult Tours and Private Family Tours. For the former, a certified tour guide will take you through the cider creation process. This includes how Threadbare sources apples and yeasts, as well how they produce bottle-conditioned hard ciders.

For the latter, parents and children get to enjoy some non-alcoholic cider to accompany their walk through the Cider House. Threadbare may even spin a yarn about the Steel City's own Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman.

Both tours run all week, with weekday availability from 11am-7pm, Saturday from 5:30pm-8pm, and Sunday from 11am-3pm. Min and Max guests range from 6-22. You need to make contact with Threadbare Cider House & Meadery first for a reservation.

Brew Tours in Nearby Pennsylvania Cities & Counties

Liberty brew tours (lbt).

Liberty Brew Tours conducts business in Philadelphia along with Montgomery and Bucks county. Typical story of friends coming together with a love for and appreciation of craft beer. Breweries included on their tours are Crooked Eye Brewing, Tower Hill Brewery, Sacred Vice Brewing, Punch Buggy Brewing Company, and more. Tours run on the weekend and cost about $95 per person. LBT also books private tours. If that's what you're looking for, get in touch with them.

Tastings and Tours

T&T covers Lehigh/Berks County, Bucks County, and Cape May for craft beverage fun. We say craft beverage because Tastings and Tours hits breweries, distilleries, and wineries alike. Included in their tours are VIP access to the facilities and a lunch.

Brodsky launched City Brew Tours in 2008 and became “the first to establish a brewery tour company on the East Coast,” according to the company’s website. The tour offers guests the chance to visit a number of craft breweries in a city, learn about the history of the breweries, the brewing process, and sample a selection of beers at each location.

Since its launch, City Brew Tours has expanded to more than 14 cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, and Montreal.

Birmingham’s franchise of City Brew Tours opened to the public on Nov. 4. Led by Scottie and Dustin Hughes, the tours will include stops at Avondale Brewing Company, Cahaba Brewing Company, Ghost Train Brewing Company, Good People Brewing Company, Neighbors Brew & Pies, and TrimTab Brewing Company. The $99 “Original” brew tour features a sampling of 16 beers and a lunch and beer pairing. The slightly smaller $75 “sip” tour will include 12 samples and a pretzel snack. Tickets are available at citybrewtours.com/birmingham. City Brews Tours Birmingham is offering a 20 % promotional discount on tours until November 15. Patrons who wish to receive the discount can book their tours using the code “LAUNCH20.”

“We have partnered with some of the best breweries in Birmingham to give an experience unmatched in the area,” Scottie Hughes, co-leader behind City Brew Tours Birmingham, said in a press release. “We will be going through the history and brewing process of craft beer while tasting a variety at each stop. Birmingham has such great quality craft beer that we cannot wait to show off to our guests.”

Fantastic way to explore your city and spend an afternoon/evening

"I would highly recommend this to anyone. Barry and Eric were excellent tour guides and did a great job of not only teaching us about the history of beer, but also made a point to learn about each person's favorite type of beer so it was including in the samplings. All the places we visited were great. I definitely plan on doing this again."

Most Enjoyable Evening
