Travel irons can be the best way to keep your clothes looking sharp while out on the road. However, with so many options on the market, it can be hard to find the product that is right for you.

To help you in your search, we’ve analysed the best travel irons on the market and assessed them against a range of important criteria including size, design and features so you can find the iron that best meets your specific needs.

Top Pick: Sunbeam Pro Steam Compact Iron

Size: 10 x 12.3 x 22.8cm Temperature: Variable dial Pros: Sleek design, powerful, comes with a bag Cons: Small water tank

The Pro Steam Compact Iron (SRS2000) is the new version of the very popular Pro Steam Travel Iron (SR2300) . It is sleek, lightweight and powerful making it ideal for everyday use.

One of the features we like is the foldable handle, it makes storage easy without compromising comfort and control when using the portable steam iron. The dual voltage makes this a great choice for travel and the stainless steel soleplate is non stick and built to last.

As with the older version, this one also comes with a travel bag for storage and a handy plastic measuring cup.

Most Compact: Birch Mini Travel Steam Iron

Size: 13.4 x 7.7 x 7.9cm Temperature: Variable heat settings Pros: Steam and dry iron, lightweight, best for small items Cons: Not suited for ironing larger items such as suits

Travel Iron Comparison Table

Travel iron buying guide.

This guide will provide you with a better idea about what features you might want to include when buying a travel iron. Use the factors listed below to help you select the best travel iron for your needs.

Famous brand names sometimes have an inflated price tag to go with it. Be sure to check out some of the less familiar brands which are emerging as solidly reliable travel iron manufactures.

Everyone is travelling on a different budget. The reason why people on the move need a travel iron is to avoid the very expensive laundry fees charged by hotels. So, work out what price you feel comfortable with, and don’t be tempted into overspending on a more expensive model.

Feedback from previous buyers is an essential part of making a buying decision. Look out for common problems people have with certain models.

Performance is always linked to wattage. Even though a travel iron must be lightweight and compact, it must still offer enough watts of power to do the job it’s meant to do properly. Look for wattages higher than 1100 if you want easy ironing.

Temperatures & Settings

The more setting choices your travel iron offers, the more fabrics varieties you will be able to press. If you like to pack silks, cotton, and linen clothing, you will know these materials always need to be ironed when they come out of the suitcase. Each of these fabrics requires a different temperature setting.

Water Capacity

Steam irons need water to flatten all the creases caused by your clothes being folded up for so long. This is the most effective way of removing creases in the shortest amount of time. If you want your clothes to look effortlessly smooth and cared for, consider buying a travel iron that can steam and press.

Weight & Dimensions

There’s nothing worse than finding a must-have souvenir on your travels, and then having to leave it behind because you have no space in your luggage or you are overweight. Make sure your travel iron is compact and lightweight.

As with any electrical appliance, you should check for warranty length, repairs, and replacement guarantees. Safeguards such as a 1-year warranty or money-back guarantee indicates the manufacturer backs the product’s reliability.

Extra Travel Iron Features

To make a travel iron stand out, manufacturers like to add a few extra features such as:

  • stainless steel soleplate
  • handy travel pouch
  • anti-drip design
  • steam control

This makes the product unique and leaves it up to you, the buyer, to decide which addition you like before deciding on which travel iron to buy.

Steam Vs. Press Iron

Will you really need a travel iron with a steam feature on the road, or just a small, electric one?

Irons are great for pressing out creases as long as you have an ironing board or other surface to press on. The more compact (smaller) the iron, the longer it will take to finish the job.

A travel iron with a steam feature allows you to steam out any wrinkles while smoothing the material at the same time with the hotplate.

Then there are the standalone  garment steamers  that remove creases, but can’t replicate that sharp edges look some travellers require for work situations.

You can decide which features your iron should have, before deciding which model is best.

  • Iron’s handle folds to make it even more compact and portable
  • Has a non-stick soleplate that makes ironing a breeze
  • Dual voltage makes it a great iron to bring on international travel

“This iron does not disappoint! Comes with a little carry bag and filling jug (it’s small, but does the job) and both are easy to clean. Heats up in no time and easy to dial in the heat setting for the fabric you are ironing.”– Ian B

If you’re in search of a compact steam iron that doesn’t compromise on power for your travels, the Sunbeam Pro Steam Compact Iron won’t disappoint. It surpassed our expectations in every test.

Despite its size, it generated enough steam to get the job done. We like the fact that the handle can be folded down even more,  giving you an iron that you can bring with you even when you have limited space in your luggage.

With a water tank capacity of 50ml and a continuous steam output of 45g/min, you can make quick work of any creases in a matter of minutes. However, the soleplate is rather small, so we had to make multiple passes.

To fill the tank, simply use the accompanying water beaker to reduce spillage. The iron comes with a non-stick stainless-steel soleplate, so you can rest assured your clothes won’t stick to the iron even when working with delicate fabrics.

Another feature worth mentioning is its dual voltage capabilities. This is what makes it the perfect compact and portable iron for travellers. Such a feature makes it easier for you to iron clothes in any country, as long as you have the outlet adaptor needed for it. Just make sure to switch to the right voltage that the country you’re in is using before plugging it in.

For delicate or mixed fabrics, start with the lowest setting and adjust as needed. Following this approach on polyester yielded remarkable results.

It’s also advisable that you use the setting ideal for the most sensitive fabric on a mixed fabric item to prevent damage to the said clothing.

  • Small enough to carry anywhere
  • Variable voltage makes it great for international travel
  • The non-stick sole plate makes ironing easier

How we Picked the Best Steam Irons

sunbeam travel iron australia

We spent about 4 weeks researching and testing the best steam irons Australia has to offer. Our team picked 8 steam irons and tested them for steam output on different types of fabrics to find out how they perform at maximum and low settings.

That being said, we chose clothes that are made of linen, satin, cotton, silk, and polyester. We made sure that all clothes were thoroughly wrinkled because we wanted to see how well the test models can remove stubborn creases.

The steam irons were tested on the Leifheit 72585 Air Ironing Board for consistency (you can read more about the board in our list of best ironing boards ). We assessed the performance of each unit, taking into account the heat-up time, manoeuvrability, time taken to remove creases, amount of steam used, and scratch resistance.

Additionally, we considered factors such as ease of use, length of the power cord, water tank capacity, weight, and available safety features. All the steam irons that we tested took more or less the same amount of time to heat up.

Also, none of the test models damaged any of the fabrics that we used during testing. However we had to dial down the heat when using the turbo function on the Tefal Turbopro Airglide Steam Iron .

The Philips PerfectCare Compact Plus Steam Generator Iron outperformed the other models that we tested when it comes to steam output and crease removal, which are basically the two key factors of consideration when choosing a steam iron.

We picked it as our best overall steam iron and compared the other models based on the collected data to give you a list of the 8 best steam irons in Australia.

Steam Iron: Buying Guide

This section will help educate you on what to look for before buying an iron. There are some key considerations that we suggest you pay close attention to.

What to Look for When Buying an Iron

Let’s take a look at the most important features to consider when buying an iron:

Continuous steam pressure

Typically measured in grams per minute and ranging from 40g/min to 165g/minute for steam generator irons like the Philips PerfectCare Elite Plus Steam Generator Iron reviewed above.

Simply put the more steam per minute the more effective the iron will be on average at removing creases and wrinkles. We would recommend buying an iron with at least 60g/minute if you’re planning on doing a fair bit of ironing but 40g/minute is acceptable for light usage. 165/minute is a real powerhouse that will blast through pretty much anything you throw at it with ease.

Steam shot/boost

This feature shoots a more intense jet of steam for a short period of time to help tackle the more stubborn creases causing problems.  It is measured in the same way as a continuous stream and typically varies from 100g/minute all the way up to 600g/minute for steam generator irons.

Anything above 150g/minute is fine for most ironing tasks but the higher the better, Just remember the more steam being outputted the more frequently you’ll have to refill the tank.

Water Tank Capacity

The larger the tank the better. It’s that simple. You don’t want to refill the tank every 5 minutes so opt for an iron with a water tank capable of dealing with your usual laundry load with as few refills as possible. Tanks typically range in size from 0.25 litres for a very small tank, all the way up to 4 litres at the top end of the scale.

Another consideration is how the water tank is refilled. Some openings aren’t the easiest to access and result in spillage from time to time, so keep an eye out for an iron with an easy refill opening.

Transparent Water Tank

Being able to see exactly how much water is left in the reservoir is very useful and makes it much easier to know when a refill is required.

Drip Protection

Water stains are a real issue with irons that don’t offer drip protection, so make sure you choose an iron that explicitly states it has drip protection.

Heat Settings

The amount of heat applied to a fabric should vary depending on the fabric type, with thicker, more durable fabrics like denim requiring much more heat than silk. Some of the premium irons, particularly the Philips range, have excellent automatic fabric detection systems that adjust the temperature automatically.

Cheaper irons rely on manual input to set a suitable temperature which has its pros and cons. The pro is that you have full control of the temperature, the con is that you have to remember to do it, and you may be switching back and forth more than you like.

Following on from heat settings is ensuring that the thermostat is accurate. Cheaper models will have less accurate thermostats that could potentially result in fabric burns whereas the premium irons have very accurate thermostats.

The soleplate is the bottom of the iron that actually irons the fabric. Ideally, you would opt for a wide soleplate like the one found on the Breville VIN406 PressXpress Steam Iron . This cuts down on the amount of work simply due to more coverage.

You should also pay attention to the material of the soleplate and buy an iron with a high heat conduction metal.

Weight and Ergonomics

There’s nothing worse than buying a new product only to find out that it’s uncomfortable to use. If you plan on using an iron for extended periods of time, this should be one of your primary considerations. You don’t want to own an iron you don’t want to use. Instead opt for the iron that has the features you need and want, with the lowest weight possible.

Anti-calc System

Just like any product that stores water, like kettles, you want to choose an iron with a scale collection system that filters out the impurities and protects the longevity of the iron.

We all forget things from time to time, but leaving an iron-on can be extremely dangerous if it doesn’t have the right safety features. Almost all irons have an auto shut-off feature if it detects a lack of movement but double-check this is the case. Definitely do not buy an iron without this feature.

Cord Length

The longer the cord the better, it’s that simple. They typically range from 1.5 meters to 4 meters. Also, keep an eye out for the cord stored because some irons have some clever ways of keeping the cord organised.

The higher the wattage the quicker it heats up. This isn’t too much of a big deal but if you want to get going as quickly as possible then look for an iron that’s 2500W or higher. These irons typically take about a minute to heat up fully, with lower wattages taking longer.

We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

The 8 Best Travel Irons

Now that we’ve discussed exactly what to look for in a travel iron let’s take a look at some of the best ones available. We’ve compiled a list of the best options that are versatile and will satisfy all of your expectations for a travel iron.

The stainless-steel soleplate ensures a smooth glide over fabric, especially cotton and synthetic clothes. There is also an anti-slip heel on the bottom of the iron for maximum protection from unwanted contact .

  • Steam burst feature that eliminates hard wrinkles
  • Takes a bit more time to heat up

The Best Steam Irons to Make Your Work Shirt Look Nice and Crisp

Tiffany Forbes Avatar

The best irons are, ideally, not too heavy, offer great steam power and boast a smooth soleplate to glide through creased work shirts and garments effortlessly. In our book, they should also heat up quickly and be easily refillable.

If you’re in the market for a new iron , then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve done the hard yards, rifling through hundreds of product reviews and descriptions to find you the best irons, ironing boards and ironing accessories in Australia.

Here’s a running list of the best steams irons we’ve found online in Australia.

The best steam irons to buy in Australia

Sunbeam verve ceraflow steam press.

sunbeam travel iron australia

Designed to offer a powerful steam shot and continuous flow, this iron is one of the best in Australia as your one-stop-shop for quickly smoothening creases and wrinkles, so you can get through that piling mountain of ironing fast. Sunbeam’s Dual Steam Chamber Technology also optimises the steam pressure to really deeply penetrate fibres, allowing for the effortless removal of creases — even on tough fabrics. And, it’s only $69 .

To sweeten the deal, we should also mention this baby is fitted with a powerful 2400-watts, providing you with a super-fast heat-up and even temperature across the soleplate. There’s a reason it’s in our top picks of the best irons in Australia.

Philips Azur Elite Steam Press with OptimalTEMP Technology

Best irons in Australia

If you find yourself constantly ruining or steam-burning your lighter fabrics, then we can’t stress just how much we recommend this option. Using Philip’s OptimalTemp technology and its DynamiQ mode, the Azure Elite Steam Iron assures it will never cause burns to any ironable fabric, meaning you can iron everything from jeans to silk, linen and cashmere safely, and in any order, without waiting for the temperature to adjust.

This iron also comes equipped with ‘max mode’, which is the best for blasting stubborn creases with powerful continuous steam and an ‘eco steam mode’ with minimum constant steam that saves up to 20 per cent energy for all you environmentally friendly friends!

PHILIPS 3000 Series Steam Iron

sunbeam travel iron australia

Delivering fast warm-up and powerful performance, this Philips 3000 Series Steam Iron boasts a durable ceramic soleplate that glides well on any ironable garment (read: it won’t start to peskily stick to your clothes after a few uses like some irons do). Its drip-stop system even prevents leakage to avoid stains from water droplets so you can iron with confidence at any temperature.

What’s better? Aside from its solid price tag, it has a vertical steam function, which allows you to refresh garments right on the hanger and remove creases from hanging fabrics such as curtains. No ironing board required.

Kambrook Steamline Advance

Best irons in Australia

Similar to the Philips 3000 Series, this Kambrook Steamline Iron offers easy-glide sole plates, a fine mist spray technology to remove creases in a very efficient way, and an anti-dip system to prevent excess water seeping through onto your clothes while in function. So, if you’re after an affordable option that truly gets the job done, we’d look no further than this highly-rated budget alternative.

TEFAL UltraGlide Plus Steam Iron

sunbeam travel iron australia

Featuring a safety shut-off feature after being left unattended for eight minutes, this Tefal iron is said to heat quickly and glide like a dream. It’s also conservative with water, ensuring you don’t need excessive refills. However, if you’re happy to have an iron with a bit of weight to it, this 2kg option is a great choice since it eliminates any additional pressure.

Russell Hobbs Rapid Steam Iron

Best irons in Australia

Our last pick is this Russell Hobbs Rapid Steam Iron, which features a non-stick ceramic soleplate that’s suitable for all types of fabrics. It sports the option to switch between a burst of steam and continuous steam, which is helpful when it comes to particularly stiff garments such as linen or flax.

The best ironing boards and accessories

Of course, you can’t have a running list of the best irons in Australia without a couple of ironing boards and must-have accessories to help you achieve the crispest of clothing possible.

So, if you’re going to invest in one of these babies, it’s worth also investing in this  Sunbeam Mode ironing board ($137.97). Not only is it one of our favourite durable ironing boards, but it’s super compact for a small house as it folds down .

Alternatively, if you think you have no space for an ironing board altogether, we’d recommend the Joseph pocket plus folding table-top ironing board ($99.95) as it does the same job, but instead, just sits on top of a regular table (read: your dining table or even kitchen bench).

This magnetic ironing mat blanket ($28.40) also beats the need for a board altogether and allows you to make any hard surface a heat-proof ironing station.

Other than an ironing board, you might also like to nab yourself an  ironing Glove ($21.27) to protect your hands from the steam, as well as this highly-raved about wrinkle releaser ($40) that helps release any persistent wrinkles in your clothes.

What to look for when shopping for a new iron

Best irons in Australia

It might be hard to believe, but you can’t just grab any old iron off the shelf. While it’s tempting to spring for the cheapest option, it’s well worth weighing up a few features to ensure you’re not only getting your money’s worth, but you’re also going to grab a steam iron that’s highly effective.

One of the first things you should consider is its weight . It’s understandable to assume that an iron that’s lightweight is easier to manoeuvre (and it is), but every iron needs some weight to effectively releases wrinkles. Without a sufficient amount of weight, you’ll need to apply more pressure to eliminate creases. An iron that weighs between 1.25kg to 2kg is ideal.

Next, you’ll want an iron that has a number of customisable temperature settings that can cater to a variety of fabrics. Many irons do tend to have indicators that read cotton, silk and/or synthetics, but there are a handful that don’t. This means that you’re more likely to run the risk of burning your clothes.

If you don’t, you should keep an eye on the temperature of your iron and ensure that you use 140 to 160º for silk, 180 to 220º for cotton, 215 to 240º for linen and 150 to 180º for viscose/rayon.

You should also look out for steam irons that happen to have an indicator that tells you when the iron has hit its ideal temperature, which also helps to prevent damaging your clothes.

From there, you’ll want to consider the types of soleplate that are installed on your iron. The most common are non-stick grills or stainless steel. On the one hand, non-stick surfaces are much easier to clean and glide more smoothly across fabrics. They also tend to be installed on cheaper irons, making it a cost-effective choice.

On the other hand, stainless steel soleplates tend to last longer, are scratch-resistant and heat up much more quickly. You can also go with a ceramic soleplate, which works just as well and has similar qualities.

Then, if you can, try to watch a demo in-store or online of someone using the iron. Cheap irons will likely dribble water onto your clothes, resulting in stains that can occasionally transfer rust into the fabric of your work shirt. No one wants any water marks on their blouse or suit when they’re about to rush off to a business meeting or dinner date.

It also helps to choose an iron that features a transparent water reservoir , so you can keep an eye on how much liquid is left inside. While you technically can iron without water, you risk damaging the fabric of your clothes so ensure that you refer to the instruction manual before attempting.

The last thing to consider is an automatic shut-off feature. Most irons are plug in and go, so when you’re rushing around the house in the morning, there’s always a chance you could accidentally forget to turn it off. An innocent mistake, but best avoided by choosing iron with automatic shut-off, so you can leave home with peace of mind always.

I also really like the downy wrinkle releaser. I took it with me on a school trip and it worked well enough to get by; not to mention it was easy to carry. I have never considered a travel iron before. I have considered purchasing a travel steamer but never commit due to the varying reviews. Would you recommend an iron over a steamer?
