Flat Foot Technology ® has been awarded not one, but two patents. Yeah, kind of a big deal. You really need to ride an Electra to feel it, but the overall benefit is comfort and control. It provides an upright, relaxed seating position with proper leg extension that allows you to plant your feet  flat on the ground whenever you want or need to.

Electra Keeps Your Feet On The Ground with Flat Foot Technology

Electra’s Townie is best describe as an easy chair on wheels: Incorporating Electra’s patented Flat Foot Technology, the Townie has become the go-to bike for cyclists who refuse to give up comfort for fitness and mobility. As popular as the Townie is these days many might still have some questions as to what Flat Foot Technology(FFT) Is? why it is so great? and what Electra models offer FFT?

Flat Foot Technology is Electra’s answer to many people’s objections to a proper saddle height (which provides ideal leg extension to reduce strain on joints and muscles): Many riders just want to put their feet on the ground while in the saddle. FFT allows optimal rider leg extension, while maintaining rider confidence and comfort, by positioning the pedals to a position in front of the rider instead of directly underneath their seat.

With this technology Electra has been able to emphasize rider comfort and stability without sacrificing the science that keeps riders pain free and efficient on a bike. On the Townie, FFT is coupled with a comfy saddle and an upright riding position to make a bike that is comfortable as can be. Riders do not feel the same strains and pressures they may experience on traditional bikes. While not built for speed, FFT bikes make sure you will enjoy every minute you spend on the bike.

While Townie is the most popular bike to feature FFT, Electra also makes their Cruiser and Amsterdam series of bikes with the same Flat Foot Fit! The super-stylish Cruisers benefit from FFT by enhancing their classic styling and making fashion comfortable again. The Amsterdam series brings the practicality of Dutch city bikes to a much more comfortable place with FFT, standard fenders and a number of gearing, rack and light options to help ease you into a mobile, urban lifestyle.

Come to Village Cycle Center and check out our new Electra bikes! Have a seat on a new Flat Foot Technology Bike, like the Townie, Cruiser or Amsterdam, and feel the difference the ability to stand on your own two feet can make.

Electra Townie 7D

Firstly: don't buy this if you'll have to store it in a studio apartment, because it's huge. It's a good foot longer than a standard town bike and bulky with it. The idea of the Townie is to get an upright position with an efficient pedalling stroke, whilst still being able to put your feet flat on the floor when you're at a standstill. Electra call it Flat Foot Technology, and basically it equates to a clockwise rotation of the ride position, by 23. So, pedals move forward and up a bit in relation to the saddle, which is lower in relation to the ground. You get full leg extension when you're pedalling, and you can put your feet down at the lights.

The frame is based around this premise and fashioned from 6061 alloy, with a steel unicrown fork. It's a big old beast but not super-heavy, at 28lb. Cables are routed internally for clean lines and you get a half chain case for the extra-long chain. Mudguard and rack mounts are provided.

The components

trek flat foot technology

It's not sexy, but Shimano's Tourney TX derailleur does the business at the rear, controlled by a Revo twist shifter. There's seven speeds, with a Megarange cassette with a massive 34T bailout sprocket next to the spokes, a big leap from 2nd but useful in a hilly crisis. You need to ease off on that shift! A galvanised KMC chain and 44T steel chainset make up the rest of the drivetrain. Stopping is handled by linear-pull brakes and you get a big elastomer-suspended saddle and wide risers with decent grips.

trek flat foot technology

It's a bit odd at first, the Flat Foot position. It's somewhere in between normal city riding and recumbent. You're too far back to ever stand up on the pedals, so it's sitting down all the way which is fine for about five miles, when the big saddle starts to make its presence felt. But for ambling through town and lolloping along canal paths it's a lovely relaxed bike, slow on the turn but very comfortable and not over-heavy.

Point the bike uphill and it's not such good news. With standing up denied to you, the only option is to sit down and sweat it out. I found myself alternating between upright climbing (hunched over the front of the bike) and recumbent climbing (arms locked out leaning backwards), with the latter generally winning out as it felt a touch more efficient. Neither is that much fun though, and remember to get into the big sprocket early if you think you'll need it, because making that shift under load makes sounds you don't want to hear from your transmission.

trek flat foot technology

Going back down the other side of a hill is fun though with the bike lovely and stable, although the steering is a bit vague when the scenery is rushing by. The V-style brakes were faultless throughout, stopping the considerable rotating weight of the double wall rims and 2" slick tyres without undue fuss.

This is a bike aimed at people who aren't going to do a huge amount of riding, and as such it's fairly low maintenance. But those same people are going to be cursing into their flat whites if they have to stop on nearly every cafe ride and put the chain back on, like I did. That long chain and single chainring means it's much too easy to drop the chain on bumpy surfaces. The bike needs a chain guide at the top of the chainring to keep things in place; since there's a chain case there already it shouldn't be hard to fit one.

Climbing position and chain-shipping niggles aside, this is a fun bike to cruise around on. If you live somewhere with flattish topography and good road surfaces, you shouldn't have any problems at all. Sadly at least one of those two is missing in most parts of the UK...

Fun cruiser for easy riding on good surfaces, but struggles with the hills

Hi. Great review! I was wondering... Did you test the regular size townie or the Tall model? I'm 192 cm and was wondering if the Tall model would be big enough for me.. Also what are the exact differences between normal and Tall model (length, height...)? Thank you! Greetings from Croatia.

Odd bike (not my cup of tea but someone will like it), great review - hope the manufacturers listen about the chain guide!

Electra Townie Go! & Path Go! Review

Electra Townie Path Go Review

Editorial Team

Ebicycles score.

Even though electric bikes are more complex than regular bicycles, they should not stray away too much from the original idea of what this two-wheeled vehicle was imagined to be. A high-quality electric bike should be comfortable, durable, reliable, and have enough range to cover most of your regular rides.

In this review, I aim to uncover whether Electra Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! e-bikes meet these criteria.

happy woman riding an electra townie go! 5i

These are entry-level to mid-range Class 1 comfort/cruiser e-bicycles built by Electra, a US-based company and a subsidiary of Trek. Though they come with high-quality electric and mechanical components (mainly Bosch and Shimano), they’re not ideal for everyone due to their design and original intent. That said, if you’re a commuter and a recreational rider, you will probably love them.

If you’re considering buying a Townie electric bike, you will benefit from reading this review by seeing exactly what you’re getting for your money.

What Kind of E-Bikes Are Electra Townie Go! & Townie Path Go!?

Electra ‘s Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! are two distinct lines of cruiser/comfort bikes. They have a lot in common, but they also come with some very noticeable differences.

First of all, let’s talk about the traits they share. Both lines are comprised of recreational bicycles intended for commuters and leisure riders. These are not fast bikes, so they’re not ideal for performance-oriented cyclists who want to dominate group rides. Though, with the help of a high pedal-assistance level, you can easily maintain a 15 mph average speed and reach a 20 mph maximum assisted speed. That’s not too shabby at all.

Both of these Townie electric bikes also implement Electra’s patented Flat Foot Technology for easier pedaling and a more stable feel.

Electra Townie Go! electric bicycles review

Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! are comfortable electric bicycles that blow the competition away with the value for money they provide.

In terms of pricing, Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! range from budget e-bikes to mid-range e-bikes, which determines what features and accessories you get. For example, Townie Go! 7D represents the bottom of the range ($1,500) and Townie Path Go! 10D sits at the top of the price range ($3,700).

Your budget will also determine whether or not you’ll get fenders, lights, an integrated battery, mid-drive or rear hub motor, and a few other bells and whistles.

Therefore, if you’re looking for a bike to use for commutes, run errands on, take your kids to school, go on family picnics, or enjoy a relaxing ride with your friends, these two Townie electric bikes will fit the picture just right.

Let’s find out exactly what you get with each of the available models, answer the most common questions, and clarify any other doubts.

But before that…

What is Electra’s Flat Foot Technology?

Flat Foot Technology is a unique frame design solution developed by Electra. What they did is they moved the pedals forward relative to the saddle, relaxed the angle of the seat tube, and thus opened up the cockpit for a more comfortable position.

Electra Flat Foot Technology

Electra’s patented Flat Foot Technology in action.

The main benefits of these design changes are:

  • Upright riding position.
  • Relaxed arm position and an improved view of the road.
  • Ability to plant your feet flat on the ground while sitting on the saddle.
  • Full and proper leg extension while pedaling.
  • Less strain on the knees while pedaling hard, such as when riding uphill.

All Townie electric bikes feature this clever frame design solution. That’s what makes them so different from other similar bikes out there. They’re unprecedentedly comfortable, which is what matters the most when shopping for a cruiser/comfort bicycle.

Townie Go! Series Overview

Townie Go! is the less expensive and more budget-oriented line of the two. These are simple but capable city electric bikes built around step-over or step-through frames.

They’re powered by either Bosch or Hydrive systems, both of which are similarly capable to take you on a spin around town, haul a lot of weight, and make short work of an intimidating hill.

Let’s get into a bit more detail about the value each of the available Townie electric bikes offers for the money. Are they worth it? You can decide for yourself.

Townie Go! 7D Step-Over & Step-Thru

Electra Townie Go! 7D Bikes

Taking Electra Townie Go! 7D Step-Over and Step-Thru for a chill spin.

Electra Townie Go! 7D is the cheapest e-bike of the bunch. It costs just $1,500 and features a streamlined design with an emphasis on ease of use and practicality.

Available in step-over and step-through variations, the frame is made with lightweight aluminum and the fork is made with Hi-ten steel. Both frames come with Electra’s Flat Foot Technology that will improve your pedaling, comfort, and stability.

Townie Go! 7D is powered by a Hydrive 250W rear hub motor and a 309 Wh battery mounted on the rear rack. With a smart usage of the three available assistance levels, you can probably get around 50 miles from one charge. You can track your battery and assist levels on a handy LED control pad mounted on the handlebar.

The “7D” in the name of this Townie electric bike stands for a 7-speed derailleur, which is an entry-level Shimano Tourney in this case. Other features include dependable mechanical disc brakes and 26″ x 2.35″ balloon tires that will greatly improve your comfort. Note that the Step-Over model rolls on 27.5″ wheels and tires with the same width.

Speaking about comfort, you also get an ergonomic saddle with shock-absorbing elastomers, so you can enjoy long rides without a sore bum.

All in all, Townie Go! 7D ibn this review is a decent entry-level city e-bike with a lot of value for the money and a few points for future improvement. If you want an affordable, comfortable, upright ride with decent range and plenty of pedal-assistance, don’t hesitate to get it.

Townie Go! 8D EQ Step-Over & Step-Thru

Electra Townie Go! 8D electric bicycle

Electra Townie Go! 8D feels at home when you take it on a cruise along a sandy beach.

Electra Townie Go! 8D EQ comes with a small upcharge in price but a big up-charge that you get from the battery and the motor.

In terms of frame design, it doesn’t differ from the less-expensive Townie Go! 7D. It sports the same aluminum frameset with a steel fork. Step-over and step-through versions are also available, both of which come with 26″ x 2.35″ balloon tires.

What differs is that this bike is equipped with a high-quality, mid-drive Bosch Active Line 250W motor and a Bosch 400Wh battery mounted on the down tube. It will give you up to 70 miles of range if you dose the four levels of assist the right way. Moreover, the LED control pad is replaced with a sophisticated Bosch Purion LCD screen.

This bike also features better hydraulic disc brakes, internal cable routing, and an 8-speed Shimano Tourney rear derailleur. A big plus is that it also comes with fenders, lights, and a rear rack.

So if you want more power, range, and gears, better electronics, better brakes, and you’re willing to pay, Townie Go! 8D EQ will deliver on all of that.

Townie Go! 5i Step-Over & Step-Thru

Electra Townie Go! 5i EQ electric bike

Electra Townie Go! 5i EQ is everything you need from an e-bike minus the complicated maintenance.

Electra Townie Go! 5i EQ is the premium model in this line. It shares all the good features of its less expensive cousins and improves on the poor ones.

Like the cheaper 8D EQ, this model also comes with a potent, mid-drive Bosch Active Line 250W motor and the same 400Wh battery pack. Of course, these are coupled with the respected Bosch Purion LCD display.

This Townie Electric bike’s main selling point is the Shimano Nexus 5-speed internal gear hub that’s completely sealed and requires no adjusting or maintenance. It has plenty of gear range to comfortably climb hills with the help of the motor.

Urban riders will also appreciate the power and the ease-of-use of the hydraulic disc brakes, as well as the Schwalbe Fat Frank 26″ x 2.35″ tires. These come with puncture protection which will make all the difference when navigating the minefields that city streets are.

Of course, being a premium model of this review, Townie Go! 5i EQ also sports fenders and lights, a kickstand, and an Abus frame lock, all of which will enhance your riding experience.

Townie Path Go! Series Overview

Townie Path Go! is Electra’s answer to the needs of riders who requested more style, better looks, improved power, and more sophisticated components and accessories.

The result is a good-looking city/comfort bike with a sleek design, powerful Bosch electronics, and smoothly operating Shimano components. Naturally, the price tag is also higher compared to the budget-oriented Townie Go! series.

If you have high expectations from an e-bike you’ll be using every day, these Townie e-bikes might just be the right choice.

Townie Path Go! 10D EQ Step-Over & Step-Thru

Electra Townie Path Go! e-bike

Townie Path Go! is a fun electric cruiser that can put a smile on the face of any new rider.

Those who wish to ride faster, explore further, and conquer steeper hills should consider getting the Townie Path Go! 10D EQ Class 1 city e-bike.

This Townie e-bike features a more powerful Bosch Performance Line 500W mid-drive motor and a fully integrated Bosch 500Wh battery pack. You can barely see that the battery is there, but it will easily provide you with a range of up to 65 miles.

Instead of a traditional LED or an LCD controller, Townie Go! 10D supports a Bosch Smartphone Hub controller. It lets you connect your smartphone to the bike via Bluetooth, which lets you control the bike, charge your phone, get navigation, listen to music, track your rides, and a lot more.

The 10D in the name stands for a Shimano Deore 10-speed rear derailleur, which is a really nice feature. It’s a mid-range group offering crisp and precise shifting.

Townie 10D EQ also sports dependable Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, fenders, lights, ABUS frame lock, and so on. It rolls on Bontrager E6 hard-case lite 27.5″ x 2.4″ tires with puncture protection and reflective sidewalls, so you get comfort, convenience, and safety all at once.

To sum, this is a modern and trendy electric bike for city folks who put comfort and style above everything else but don’t feel like sacrificing power, range, speed, and reliability to get them.

How Do Electra Townie Go! & Townie Path Go! Feel to Ride?

Electra Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! are built to be enjoyed. If you’re a performance-oriented cyclist looking for an e-bike with a sporty feel, you should probably keep looking for your ideal e-bike . On the other hand, if you want comfort, style, and fun, scroll back up and make your pick.

No matter which Electra Townie Go! or Townie Path Go! model you get, you will enjoy a similar ride feel and experience. Of course, what will differ will be the accessories, power, and the range of the bikes.

Electra Townie Path Go! e-bike in a natural setting

Electra Townie line consists of versatile e-bikes that can make different types of riders happy.

With the battery charged and the pedal-assistance on, Electra Townie e-bikes feel fast, nimble, and responsive no matter the terrain. Each bike weighs around 50 lbs on average, which is reasonable for an e-bike of this class. They can also haul up to 300 lbs of rider weight, kids, or additional cargo mounted on the rear rack.

Thanks to the multi-speed drivetrains, you can ride these bikes with relative ease even with a low pedal-assist level or with a dead battery. If you take the battery pack off, you can ride any Townie e-bike like a regular bike and get a good workout in.

To sum this review, the words I feel need to be emphasized when discussing the ride feel of Townie Go! and Townie Path Go! bikes are Comfort, Style, Power, and Versatility. Enjoy it!

Men’s & Women’s Version

Electra Townie 7D Women's

Electra Townie 7D comes in two main versions: men’s and women’s . At least that’s what the manufacturers call them. The truth is, from what we’ve learned about this bike, we’d just call them “step-over” and “step-through.”

The only difference between these two versions is in the size and the shape of the frame, as well as the colors. The men’s version is slightly bigger than the women’s and the frame is a step-over.

Therefore, we recommend choosing the bike relative to your height , the preference for the type of the frame, and the colors, rather than relative to your gender.

The Frame & Fork

Electra townie go 7d, how does electra townie ride, electra townie 7d — bicycle guider’s verdict.

Townie 7D comes with a lightweight aluminum frame and a strong steel fork. Its weight is around 28 lbs , which is pretty low for a cruiser of this size.

Talking about size, due to its geometry, this bicycle is around one foot longer than a standard city bike. That’s something to consider if you plan to keep it in a small apartment.

Unfortunately, Electra does not have a size chart for Townie 7D. However, we contacted the company’s support team regarding sizing and got this response:

“There is not a set height recommendation for those bikes as each rider’s body is different. Inseam and torso length play a big factor in sizing a bike. That said, most people from 5’0″ tall all the way through 6’3″ will fit on Townies. For people over 6’3″ we recommend the tall frame size, and for people under 5’0″ we recommend they look at 24″ bikes.”

So, if you are between 5’0″ and 6’3″, feel free to choose the standard model!

Flat Foot Technology®

Electra Townie Flat Foot Technology

The idea behind Electra Townie is to allow you to easily plant your feet on the ground when you come to a stop. That is achieved thanks to Electra’s Flat Foot Technology . The pedals are positioned in front of the saddle and slightly higher than on other bicycles which allows you to get full leg extension without raising the saddle too high up.

The men’s version comes in three colors: matte black, matte khaki green, and silver. The women’s model is available in  SEVEN colors: light blue, blue, red, purple, green, yellow, and turquoise.

The frame also features internal cable routing for a clean appearance and plenty of eyelets to mount racks, mudguards, lights, water bottles, and more.

Electra Townie 7D comes with a straightforward 1×7 drivetrain with a large 44T crankset and a 14-34T cassette in the back. You’ll shift gears with a Shimano Tourney TX rear derailleur and a Shimano Revo grip shifter.

Nothing too impressive, but it will definitely get the job done. Just make sure not to shift gears under pressure or you will not like the sound the derailleur makes.

These seven gears make the bike suitable for flat riding with some moderate hills in-between if you want to feel a burn in your legs.

The Tires & Brakes

Townie explores the city on 26″ wheels and 2″ semi-slick tires . The rims are double-walled, which means they are strong and won’t get damaged if you hit an occasional curb or a pothole. The 2″ tires are generally wide enough for a comfortable and confident ride.

This bike brakes using standard aluminum V-brakes which can be adjusted pretty well. Considering the bike is intended for flat riding, disc brakes would definitely be overkill.

Electra Townie Go! 7D

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Townie models have electric models too. Namely, the Go! indicates that the bike has a lot more to offer.

The Townie Go! models are a bit pricier than the original Electra Townie bikes, but they also offer a bit more value.

Electra Townie Go! 7D has been supported with a Hyena 250W motor. The 250Wh battery offers 16-40 miles of range, which is perfect for commuting.

See the Go! Models on REI

Electra Townie Tires & Brakes

This beautiful cruiser rides smoothly and comfortably . Even though there is no suspension, the overall length of the bike and the 2″ tires disperse vibrations quite nicely.

On flats, you will have nothing but a smile on your face. However, if you try to ride uphill, you might experience some issues. Due to the position of the pedals, it’s hard to stand up and sprint . Therefore, you will have to lean back and sweat it out. There’s nothing bad in a good workout, right?

Other than that, the brakes do a pretty good job of stopping this 28 lbs cruiser limousine and the shifters are pretty good for normal everyday riding.

Could you provide a comparison of a LIV ladies bike to a Electra Townie 7d step over bike

Hi Larry, The former is a sports bike. The latter is a cruiser.

I just rented a townie.l am 5′ 2″. With the, seat down at the lowest possible my toes just touched the ground. The handle bars were at my armpits when l stood by the bike.l think the suggested height needs to be adjusted.Very glad l rented before buying.lt was not a fun time.

Hi Christine, Glad you raised this issue up. Did you specify the frame size you need? A frame bigger than your recommended size will feel uncomfortable even with seat pushed down. Unless the store has only one size on that day.

Just purchased a Ladies Electra wondering if I got a lemon, first ride mile from home rear flat. Also noticed a low thump sound. Flat fixed at shop they checked for sound tech said he checked everything good to go he advised new bikes do need breaking in. Got bike home rode it still heard low thump and noticed shifting in 4 th makes noise that comes and goes. My other bikes are Specialized Hybrid now both 8 and 10 yrs old never made any noises and still don’t. Wondering if I should take bike back and exchange it for another one. Before I do is it standard for Electras to make noise?

Hi Rene, I think you should need proper bike servicing because bikes that come out of the box aren’t perfect. In my experience, having a thorough bike check can help you save money and create lasting bike enjoyment. Try to ride it as often as possible until the low thump disappears. If not then get a proper bike check.

How does the Townie compare with the Jamis citizen 3?

Hi Terri, Both brands are great within the category. The specs are the same.

How would you compare the Townie Electra 7 speed to the Brooklyn bicycle model Brighten 7. Does one sit the rider up straight more than the other. Thank you, Brian

Hi Brian, I put them in the same category in terms of riding comfort and also the riding style. They have the same upright position, but the latter is geared for those who love the Dutch bike style.

Do Your Bikes Have Flat Feet Technology?

Jeremy Pollack

Updated On: April 14, 2023

trek flat foot technology

It can be a little stressful to purchase a bicycle online without trying it out first. Our bikes are built for comfort and functionality, but we understand you want to get a feel for the bicycle before you buys it and know what to expect. Like many top cruiser bikes, some of our bikes have flat feet technology which means you can rest with your feet flat on the ground while sitting in the seat. Bikes like our EVRYjourney are designed with a forward pedal so you can sit comfortably on the saddle while resting your feet on the ground.

Sixthreezero's bicycles are built with Flat Foot Technology® which allows riders to maintain a comfortable and upright posture while cycling. This unique frame design also reduces stress on the back and hips, making the ride more enjoyable. The Flat Foot Technology® frame design is incorporated in all sixthreezero bikes, including cruiser bikes, hybrid bikes, and electric bikes.

The design of sixthreezero's Flat Foot Technology® is based on the idea that the rider's feet should be flat on the ground when they are seated on the bike. This allows for a more balanced and stable ride, making it easier for riders to stop and start as well as maintain control of the bike at low speeds. The frame geometry also allows for a more relaxed riding position, which is ideal for those who may have back problems or other physical limitations.

Apart from the benefits of Flat Foot Technology®, sixthreezero bikes are also equipped with high-quality components that ensure a smooth and efficient ride. From the tires to the pedals, every aspect of these bikes is designed to provide riders with the best possible experience. The bikes also come in a variety of styles and colors, allowing riders to find one that fits their personality and needs. Whether you're looking for a comfortable cruiser bike for a leisurely ride or an electric bike for longer commutes, sixthreezero has you covered with their Flat Foot Technology® bikes.

I'm starting out with talking about Flat-Foot Technology as I'll be referring to it often as I compare different lines of bicycles (in terms of function and comfort). Flat-Foot doesn't exactly sound snazzy, but it's one of the coolest things to happen to the bike industry, especially to the general population of bicycle enthusiasts. It single-handedly took the category of Comfort Bike to a whole new level, and is offered only by Electra (a company located right here in Vista, CA). Traditional mountain, road and hybrid bikes have very similar frame geometry. Look closely and you will see the pedals are almost directly below the seat. As a result, your upper body is rotated forward. That's great for low-profile racing and/or serious mountain climbing, but for a relaxed cruise through the neighborhood, the park or along the bay, it's not very comfortable. Traditional position:

  • Back is curved forward
  • Weight is on hands
  • Neck is bent to see ahead of you
  • Feet can't reach the ground while in seated position
  • Improved level of comfort and control
  • Upright seating
  • Relaxed arm position
  • Wider view of the road
  • Allows riders to place their feet on the ground while still sitting in the saddle

13 Best Walking Shoes for Flat Feet, According to Podiatrists

These comfy, top-rated pairs offer great stability for flat arches.

We may earn commission from links on this page, but we only recommend products we back. Why Trust Us?

According to the Cleveland Clinic , flat feet can result from a variety of causes—including genetics, pregnancy, conditions like pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis, and even Achilles’ tendon injuries. “Many people with flat feet suffer from various foot ailments such as bunions, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis ,” notes Elizabeth Daughtry, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. , a podiatrist based in North Carolina. “Those with flat feet can also have to deal with knee, hip, and back issues as well over time if overall alignment is not addressed and maintained early in life.”

Meet the Experts: Elizabeth Daughtry, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. , a podiatrist based in North Carolina; Anne Sharkey, D.P.M. , a podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute in Texas.

So, what kind of walking shoes are best to prevent these issues? According to podiatrists, the key feature you should look for is stability. “Those with flat feet are going to feel most comfortable in a stability shoe or a motion control shoe,” says Anne Sharkey, D.P.M. , a podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute in Texas. “Stability is important for those with flat feet, especially those with flexible flat feet as without it they may suffer from overpronation [the inward rolling of the foot] which can lead to a variety of issues like plantar fasciitis and bunion development,” adds Daughtry.

Thankfully, there are plenty of options for comfy, stylish walking shoes that will properly support your flat feet. To help you narrow down the right pair for your needs, we rounded up all the top-rated, podiatrist-approved picks right here.

Ready for comfort and stability in every step? Ahead, check out our top walking shoes for flat feet.

Hoka shoes are one of the most popular (and podiatrist-approved!) picks for walking shoes, and the Arahi 7—which Sharkey specifically recommends for flat feet—are no exception. These stability sneakers boast the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), meaning they’re recognized for promoting good foot health. These shoes deliver stability and support with its J-frame technology in the midsole, which is designed to prevent overpronation, while still offering lightweight, balanced cushioning.

“I have flat feet and have struggled finding shoes that get me through the day without pain in my feet and legs. These shoes are amazing and I am more energetic at work because of them!” wrote one reviewer on the Hoka website.

Designed for high-performance fitness walking, Ryka’s Devotion X also have the APMA Seal of Acceptance—and they come in at an affordable price point of under $100. These comfy, supportive shoes deliver stability and responsive cushioning , featuring a built-up cushion in the midfoot, a durable rubber sole, and a breathable mesh upper and padded heel.

“I was able to maintain 4-6 miles distance every day without needing to take a break due to foot pain...I am in love with this purchase,” wrote one satisfied reviewer. “These are wonderful walking shoes and also work really well for exercising. I recommend them for anyone looking for a more supportive shoe. I have flat feet and these have worked very nicely for me.”

These top-rated, affordable sneakers from Saucony “offer structure and stability and help prevent overpronation which is ideal for flat feet,” says Daughtry. Its structured cushioning with a comfy foam midsole allows these shoes to cradle and contour to your feet and transition seamlessly from heel to toe while you’re walking. And though stability shoes are typically heavier, these sneakers are lightweight (under 8 0z!) for the ultimate comfort.

“At my podiatrist’s recommendation, I was on a quest to find comfortable, supportive shoes with stability control for my severe flat feet,” shared one shopper. “I found these and fell in love. They are light and feel springy when I walk. They are breathable....The change in my feet is night and day. No more pain when I walk!”

Sharkey recommends these popular stability shoes from Asics, which are specifically designed for overpronation (as well as neutral pronation) to help prevent flat feet from rolling inward. With cloud-like maximum cushioning, these sneakers keep the foot stable for a more supportive and balanced stride, thanks to its 4D guidance system, external back heel counter, and high heel-to-toe drop of 10 mm.

Shoppers rave that they’re truly great for overpronaters with flat arches. “Most comfortable and supportive sneakers I’ve worn,” said one reviewer. “I have very wide flat feet so I need very supportive shoes, especially since I’m on my feet a lot. These sneakers were great for long walks, as well as runs! They’re very supportive and comfortable—I got them in the wide width and they’re perfect.”

Another pick that’s approved by Sharkey, these sleek, stylish platform sneakers from Vionic offer max cushioning that’s balanced with support and stability. They’re designed with a flexible, lightweight midsole that provides high rebound technology, and reviewers say they provide excellent arch support for flat feet. Plus, the brand “offers integrated orthotics and the ability to accommodate a custom orthotic [if] the built-in arch support is not enough,” notes Sharkey.

“I have extremely flat feet...When I was in these shoes I can go for longer hours without pain. They are light as a feather,” wrote one shopper on the Vionic website. “Right out of the box and onto my feet, they laced up and felt comfortable immediately.”

Daughtry likes these Brooks running shoes as they offer both structure and stability, helping to prevent overpronation for flat feet. Designed for both walking and everyday runs, these comfy shoes (which also have the APMA Seal of Acceptance!) feature plush cushioning for the ideal balance of softness and support and a high heel-to-drop of 12 mm, which allows for more cushioning to absorb the impact of heel strikes. Bonus: They come in a wide range of colors as well as multiple width options.

“I have no arches in my feet, they are very flat, causing all my joints to hurt. Most shoes I try cause half my toes to go numb as the nerves and things get pushed around incorrectly,” said one Amazon reviewer. “Brooks GTS are the only shoes with the needed motion control and foot shape to correct my over pronation. They are like magic! Soon as I put them on and stand up I realize there is no joint pain...I can walk a long while with no pain!”

These On Cloud shoes are “supportive and cushioned” for flat feet, says Sharkey. They feature the brand’s plush CloudTec cushioning, which absorbs impact for comfort in every step. The lightweight mesh upper and padded heel hug your feet for a comfortable, supportive fit, while the inner sock and lace-up design allow for easy on and off. Plus, they have a high heel-to-toe drop of 14 mm to help prevent overpronation.

“They fit perfectly right out of the box and felt great at the gym today. They offered tons of support for my flat feet and skinny ankles,” said one Nordstrom customer. “Nice and roomy in the toe box, I have pretty narrow feet and they felt great on the width too. Would definitely recommend!”

Comfy and functional as they are stylish, these trendy New Balance sneakers—another pick recommended by Sharkey for flat feet— offer great motion control with its Rollbar stability technology, which helps reduce rear foot movement . Designed with a sleek leather upper, these shoes feature a cushioned midsole with a removable foam footbed, which absorbs impact with every step. They’re also available in a range of width options.

“This is the ONLY shoe I can wear because of my foot problems. I have flat feet and extreme pronation which require an orthotic worn inside this shoe,” said an Amazon shopper. “The roll bar, large toe space, and light weight of this shoe all meet my mobility needs. I don't know what I would do without it.”

Also one of our top picks for the best walking shoes for women and the best shoes for walking on concrete , these best-selling Skechers sneakers have a laceless, slip-on design that makes them easy to take on and off. Not only that, they’re also super lightweight with a breathable mesh upper while still providing supportive, responsive cushioning to help your feet stay comfortable while walking.

These popular sneakers boast over 64,000 five-star ratings from Amazon shoppers , with many of them raving that they’re great for flat feet. “I have THE flattest flat feet in the world...I had actually gotten used to just being in pain all day,” shared one reviewer. “Then I found it. I swear, I’ve never owned such a comfortable, supportive work-approved creation in my WHOLE life...These shoes have honestly changed my life. I wear them everywhere I go.”

If you’re looking for a comfy walking sandal that will accommodate flat feet, look no further than Teva’s Verra. Designed with a nylon shank that provide lightweight stability, these sandals also feature a supportive, contoured EVA foam midsole, with a cushioned Shoc Pad in the heel that absorb impact with every step. Plus, the quick-drying straps and hook-and-loop closure allow for easy adjustability and a snug fit.

It’s no surprise they’ve earned a 4.5 star rating from over 4,000 Amazon shoppers , many of whom say that they’re great for flat feet. “I have foot pain (flat feet) so I try to get the comfiest, most supportive footwear. These sandals fit that bill perfectly. Super cushiony soles and the straps do not dig in,” wrote one reviewer.

Hoka Gaviota 5

Gaviota 5

Another great, APMA-approved Hoka pick that’s great for flat arches, the Gaviota 5 sneaker offers great stability while still providing cushioned com fort. In fact, these popular shoes feature the super-plush, maximum foam cushioning that Hoka is known for, but are also designed with a stabilizing H-Frame, along with a breathable upper and a padded tongue and collar for the ultimate comfort.

“Wow! I’m honestly amazed...Less pain, way more comfort. I have flat feet and needed a shoe with more cushion, that I could stand in for long hours,” said one reviewer. “I have worn these shoes to football games, tailgates, and events where I had to be on my feet for hours. Normally I would wake up the next day with aching feet, but with these shoes my feet were ready to go the next day…No pain at all!”

Brooks Addiction Walker 2

Addiction Walker 2

These Brooks walking shoes will help your flat feet go the distance for long hours of standing or walking, thanks to the excellent cushioning and maximum support for your low arches. They’re designed with the brand’s Extended Progressive Diagonal Rollbar (PDRB®), which provides a sturdy density post at the medial arch to allow for pronation control. And did we mention they also have the APMA Seal of Acceptance and come in multiple width options?

“I have flat feet so most shoes end up hurting my feet. Then I found the Brooks walking shoes. My feet never felt so comfortable and I am able to walk long distances,” wrote one Zappos shopper.

Orthofeet Coral Stretch Knit

If you have flat feet that are also wide—or have conditions like bunions and hammertoes—it can be especially hard to find shoes with a good fit. That’s where these APMA-approved shoes come in: Not only do they come in wide and extra wide options, they’re also designed with a roomy toe box as well as a flexible knit upper, providing a comfy fit for wide feet and helping to reduce pressure on bunions and hammertoes. Plus, they come with orthotic insoles that provide anatomical arch support.

“I have short wide feet with bad arches and weak ankles. The arch support was perfectly in place...No pinching or pain. Just perfect support and comfort,” said one Amazon shopper. “Finally! Shoes that are comfortable on my bunions and flat feet right out of the box!” another wrote.

How to choose the best walking shoes for flat feet

line break

✔️ Look for stability and motion control. A stability shoe or a motion control shoe is best for flat feet, according to Sharkey. “In general, those with flat feet should look for a more stable midsole and ones that offer additional stability,” adds Daughtry. “Motion control shoes are very supportive sneakers with additional stability features such as medial post or guide rails that help prevent the foot from rolling inward or overpronation.”

✔️ Opt for a higher heel-to-toe drop. “Heel-to-toe drop refers to the measurement, usually measured in millimeters, of the difference in the heel and forefoot thickness,” says Daughtry. She recommends a higher drop of between 7-14 mm, as it “decreases the inward movement of the heel” and “offers additional cushioning to the heel area and relieves pressure on the tendon and the plantar fascial insertion.”

✔️ Look for good cushioning. “In general, those with flat feet will tend to want more cushioning to assist with shock absorption, especially if having foot, ankle, knees, or hip pain,” notes Daughtry. She advises looking for a shoe with a foam midsole, which will offer additional cushioning while you’re walking.

✔️ Find a wide toe box. Generally, a roomy, flexible toe box is best for a comfy, pain-free fit for flat feet. Daughtry recommends looking for toe boxes made of mesh material, “which will allow for adequate air circulation and ability to stretch to accommodate any foot deformities,” she says.

Do flat feet need arch support?

line break

Shoe insoles are great for adding additional arch support to your go-to pair, but should you use them if you have flat feet? “Depending on the shoe, you may or may not need additional arch support,” says Sharkey. “If wearing a supportive athletic shoe specific to foot type, an orthotic may not be needed. Alternatively, if the shoes do not offer adequate support, an orthotic can be beneficial.”

If you do need orthotic insoles to add more arch support to your shoe, Daughtry says that the ideal choice for flat feet is custom molded molded orthotics instead of pre-made, off-the-shelf insoles. “These pre-set arches can be too painful for those with flat feet as a more rigid or build up arch can strike and stress the middle of the arch inappropriately, causing issues,” she explains.

How we chose the best walking shoes for flat feet

We consulted experts Elizabeth Daughtry, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. , a podiatrist based in North Carolina, and Anne Sharkey, D.P.M. , a podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute in Texas. Additionally, we sifted through tons of online reviews, ratings, and product specs to narrow down the best walking shoes for flat feet.

OFTEN IMITATED. NEVER DUPLICATED. When we revolutionised bike frame geometry years ago, some people were sceptical. We got some laughs and even some side-eye. A few thought it was a passing fad, but nobody’s laughing now. Actually, scratch that. A lot of people are laughing now because it’s impossible not to have a good time on an Electra. Point is, there are a lot of imitators out there, but none can come close to the original.

UPRIGHT SEATING

Mum always told you not to slouch. Flat Foot Technology provides an efficient, relaxed riding position that allows you to sit upright and not bent over the handlebars like traditional bikes.

RELAXED ARM POSITION AND WIDE VIEW OF THE ROAD

It feels chill, because it is. The relaxed angle of the seat tube opens up the cockpit, allowing for a more relaxed arm position and less pressure on your back, neck and wrists. Additionally, it lines your body up in a way to give you better visibility on your ride. Squirrel!

ABILITY TO PLANT YOUR FEET FLAT ON THE GROUND

Whenever you want. Tip-toe stops. We’ve all had them. Not only do they look funny, but they can sometimes be a bit scary. Flat Foot Technology fixes that by giving you the ability to plant your feet flat on the ground for a solid footing every time with absolute comfort and control.

FULL AND PROPER LEG EXTENSION WHEN PEDALLING

Flat Foot Technology allows you to optimise the effort of pedalling with proper leg extension due to our unique frame geometry and lower centre of gravity. There are some mechanical engineering details to back this up, but you’ll just have to trust us on that.

THE PROOF IS IN THE PEDALLING. Years ago, we challenged the sacred bike frame geometry to create a different kind of riding experience. Risky, yes, but safe never has any good stories to tell. We moved the pedals forward and relaxed the angle of the seat tube, opening up the cockpit for a more comfortable position. Two patents and a million awesome rides later, we’re glad we went out on a limb... and we think you will be too. Go ahead, take a test ride and feel the Electra difference.
