bhoothathankettu near tourist places

Bhoothathankettu is a dam that also doubles as a tourism spot attracting a large number of people around the year with its picturesque views, bountiful nature and of course the myths pervading it. The Malayalam name Bhoothathankettu means, 'monster fort', which throws light to that legend pervading the crude dam built by the demons.

Myths as the star attraction

Everything was almost set. If the demons would have it their way, with their plan working without any hitches, the Trikkariyoor temple down below would be drowned in the deluge. Throw in a few more boulders into the water, the Periyar River can be completely dammed, the flood would begin, they rubbed their arms in excitement. But they should do it before the sunrise, because all their strength, being demons, would evaporate at the first light from the east. Poor demons. What they didn’t know was the fact that Lord Siva, the presiding deity of Trikkariyoor was closely behind them watching, knowing it all from the beginning. He played a little trick on the demons by sending a rooster, which cried sending false alerts of an approaching dawn. Panicked, the demons fled the scene before they could complete the dam and the temple was saved. You don’t believe this myth! Come, somewhere down this river they say there is a place where the river is constricted by big boulders but for a little gap that testifies for the botched up work of demons on that night. You need to follow this river up to see it.

The Tipu connection

History records that it was a flood in Periyar that checked Tipu Sultan’s military advancement in Kerala. When he and his forces came and settled for a night or two on the banks of Periyar at Aluva, a small group of patriotic men managed to go upstream and break the walls of Bhoothathankettu causing heavy flood. Tipu had to return in despair. The myths and bits of history that saturate the place, Bhoothathankettu conspires to lure the tourists to see what is hidden in the Old Bhoothathankettu, which is a bit far away. The picnic spot itself offers various entertainment activities for the tourists.

The place is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 kms from Kothamangalam and 50 km from Kochi.

<< Kerala Eco Tourism

bhoothathankettu near tourist places

A myth associated with the place explains its name and how it came about. According to it, Bhoothams (evil spirits/ghosts) wanted to destroy the temple at Thrikariyoor dedicated to Lord Shiva. They decided to flood the region by damming the river Periyar. To do this the Bhoothams rolled down massive stones from the surrounding hills into a narrow portion of the river. Lord Shiva, realizing their intention came up with an ingenious plan to deter them. Ghosts being scared of daylight, he tricked them into believing that morning had arrived. To do this Lord Shiva imitated a roosters crow, the most common announcement of dawns arrival, on hearing which the evil spirits fled, leaving the dam incomplete. Visitors can see the structure downstream from the present dam. Later, the natural topography helped in building a dam here.

Splendid place

Tall mountains, a calm lake, the river Periyar and an all-encompassing forest meet at the eco tourism destination of Bhoothathan Kettu to make it a tribute to nature. At Bhoothathan Kettu a nature loving tourist can enjoy a cruise through the tranquil fresh water lake, trek through the deep green evergreen forest in search of remnants of bygone civilizations, go for an adventure expedition down the turbulent Periyar, take a cool dip in the fresh clean water coming down a mountain where the Neelakoduveli,a life-giving herb is said to grow and much more. B hoothathankettu eco tourism destination is located just 50 km. north east of Kochi and a 35 km. drive from Kochi International Airport.

At  Bhoothathankettu eco tourism destination, the river Periyar joins the Edamalayar and Pooyamkuttiyar, forming Keralas longest and largest river. Down-stream there are several islands, falls, rapids, and deep chasms in the river bed. This multi-faceted nature of the river provides challenging opportunities for those who love adventure. In the olden days the bamboo from the forests was taken to Kalady through this river in rafts. Navigating the river posed a great challenge for those who transported the bamboo down the river. This old raft route can be rediscovered by an expedition on dinghies. The sunrise from the eco tourism destination of  Bhoothathankettu is wonderful to watch.

The Old Bhoothathankettu,  attracted you to this place by its mystify...

Introduction

There is a safe natural walk trail through the thick forest which leads to the old BHOOTHATHANKETTU is amazing. The debris of huge stone are visible here that looks like real. The sight of the huge stone used by the Bhootas to construct the dam is left behind unfinished and river PERIYAR flows through the narrow space between the stones. During the trek we can enjoy the thick evergreen and riparian forests with breathtaking view of sky touching trees. One of the major attraction is a big tree with hollow inner space where a tourist can stand inside the tree and take a photograph. But the most interesting attraction is a big cave inside the forest, believed to be used by Bhootas while constructing the dam. One can only sit in the cave as it is not high enough for a person to stand which makes us think of short stature of monsters. On the way we can see big “cheeni” tree in which if we knock with a stick produces a loud sound even the elephants gets frightened by the sound and the tribal’s uses this for natural protection from animals. The trek takes one hour and the route is without much steep and undulations which enables even old people to explore the nature’s beauty and the old BHOOTHATHANKETTU. The trek takes total one hour to complete.

The word Bhoothathankettu literally means “ghost dam” in Malayalam language and is connected to Hindu mythology. The story states that long ago demons or “bhoothathans” set out to block the Periyar river to submerge Thrikkariyoor temple. Lord Shiva, the presiding diety of the temple came up with an idea to deter them. He made the sound of a crowing rooster to make it appear that dawn has arrived. Demons left their work unfinished and ran off fearing daylight. As a proof to this mythological story today we can see huge stones blocking the Periyar river at old Bhoothathankettu area, making the river flow through a narrow space which demons did not manage to dam up.

It is a major tourist attraction and people can do trekking from here. There is no separate entry free to the forest. Guides are available here who gives information about the dam and the safe spots in this place. There is a small cave on the way which is believed to be the temple of ghosts. From the new dam site one can trek through these forests to reach the old dam site. On your way you can enjoy a wide variety of flora and the voice of the birds. Boating facilities are available here.

Several measures are taken by the tourism department for developing tourism in this area. A project called as Bhoothathankettu Tourism Scheme aims at providing facilities such as boat club, information centre, restaurants, artificial ponds etc. The pilgrims to Malayattoor take the route through this forest. Very close to this dam is the Thattekad Bird sanctuary. Other nearby attractions includes the Periyar valley irrigation project and the Idamalayar irrigation project.

Bhoothathankettu Dam

Bhoothathankettu Dam in kerala

Bhoothathankettu Dam is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi. The original natural dam has been supplemented by a modern dam impounding the Bhoothathankettu Reservoir (Thattekad Reservoir). During the Malayatoor pilgrim season, travelers use the roads through the forest. Kerala might be known as God’s Own Country. But this land, mired as it is in mythology and folklore, is also known for its connection with demons or `bhoothams’. Bhoothathankettu is one such.

Long before the man-made dam was build to tame the flow of Periyar, Kerala’s longest perennial river, and irrigate the paddy fields of Ernakulam district, Bhoothathankettu had already earned its name from an interesting legend. The story goes that ages ago, demons set out to submerge the Trikkariyoor temple, whose presiding diety is Lord Shiva, by damming the Periyar and flooding the area. But, Lord Shiva, suspecting trickery, came up with a plan to deter them. He made it appear that dawn was approaching by making a sound like the crowing of the rooster. The demons fearing the arrival of light fled from their task. But there remains to this day the visible proof of their effort – the huge stones the demons were supposed to have rolled onto the riverbed, the Old Bhothathankettu. The Periyar flows on through the narrow space which the demons did not quite manage to dam up.

That’s imagination for you. The actual cause for the formation of the old Bhoothathankettu remains a conjecture. Its been attributed to two great floods – one in the 4th century and the other in 1341, which threw open the port of Kochi. The massive landslides during the flood is believed to have caused gigantic rocks to roll down from the mountain and become entrenched in the Old Bhoothathankettu.

If its curiosity about this place which that brings tourists here, it will be her beauty that keeps them enthralled forever. Bhoothathankettu has the potential of becoming one of the must-visit places in Kerala yet it remains virtually unknown by tourists. This is mainly because of the lack of infrastructure, even though plans for its development seems to have acquired some direction and drive of late.

If one is willing to put up with minor difficulties, one can come away with a veritable feast for the senses. Once you’ve arrived at Bhoothathankettu, which is located just eight kms north-east of Kothamangalam, there are various activities that one can indulge in. A trip upriver on a house boat that can conveniently accommodate 25 (for a fee of Rs. 500 or Rs. 20 per person), a ride on a speedboat, a trek into the jungle, rock climbing, fishing …the possibilities for relaxation and fun remain endless.

A trip on the houseboat is a must. Cruising up the river that is purported to be a freshwater body, whose water has medicinal values of the `Neelakoduveli’ that grows in the upreaches of the ghats (where the Periyar has its origin), is a memorable experience. The river brings a new meaning to the word `quiet’ – at least once the motors of the boat are cut.

To one side of the river lies a dense forest, that grows to the very edge of the water, so much so it seems as if a part of the forest is growing on the Periyar itself. On the other side, you can catch an occasional glimpse of habitation between the coconut and rubber trees, but not enough of them to dampen the serenity of the place. The scenario remains unchanged for some time before that side too is overtaken by forest.

The river dips inland at times, creating tempting green coves that beckons you to swim in. As you go further upstream, to the right the river seems to break away from its almost straight path to flow between the Thattekad bird sanctuary and Chelamalai, which might have been the `Vanchi’ of the old – the seat of the Chera empire. According to locals, the forest on either side of the Periyar was once home to a thriving civilisation. Remains of wells, walls, pieces of pottery recovered from there and the ruins of temples, of ancient architecture, are proof of a highly developed culture that once existed on this river’s bank.

Even if one may not be interested in anthropology, the river itself, embraced as it is by ever-green forests on both sides, the white storks lazily rising into the air, the kingfishers nearly torpedoing into the water, sightings of rare migratory birds from Siberia and above all the absolute peace and quiet that one can experience will make a trip to Bhoothathankettu worthwhile.

A journey up the Periyar to satisfy your parched senses with her beauty and tranquility are mere bonuses. The dam is a vantage point from where you can spot the turbulent water rushing from the dam towards the Old Bhoothathankettu. The river gives one the impression of sprouting here and there into pools of blood, due to the presence of a red waterplant – possibly an algae, that grows on the rocks just beneath the rushing water. A view of the surrounding area from up there, will make you forget the scorching rays of the sun that beats down on you, your companions, everything… to become lost in the legendary beauty of the Periyar.

All serene and placid, a ride through the waters is a unique experience, especially for the uninitiated.

Nearest Attractions

Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural dam built by superhumans. The name  Bhoothathan Kettu , means “monster fort”; past generations believed it was built by a  Bhootham  (monster).

  • Bhoothathankettu reservoir
  • Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (Thattekkad bird sanctuary)
  • The Idamalayar Reservoir is about 12 km distance from the place

Some monsters planned to submerge the Trikkariyoor temple, whose presiding deity is Lord Shiva by making a dam in the Periyar river and flooding the area.

Its been attributed to two great floods – one in the 4th century and the other in 1341, which threw open the port of Kochi. The massive landslides during the flood are believed to have caused gigantic rocks to roll down from the mountain and become entrenched in the Old Bhoothathankettu.
