Good to know

norway in a nutshell® tour from oslo.

This legendary tour takes you through Norway’s most breathtaking UNESCO-protected fjord and mountain scenery, as well as a trip on Europe’s top scenic rail journeys.

The Norway in a nutshell® tour from Oslo can be taken as a round trip with a return to Oslo, or as a one-way trip from Oslo to Bergen. The trip runs all year and takes you through some of Norway's most beautiful fjord scenery. You can customise your own tour to include overnight stays and activities before, after or along the route!

The Norway in a nutshell® tour from Oslo

Starting from Oslo, you first set out on a westbound train journey through scenic mountain terrain on the Bergen Railway. Upon arrival in Myrdal, you disembark and change trains to the legendary Flåm Railway. The Flåm Railway offers spectacular panoramic views to some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. Your journey continues from Flåm with a fjord cruise on the magnificent Aurlandsfjord and on the and dramatic and narrow Nærøyfjord. The Aurlandsfjord is a picturesque fjord that offers stunning views, while the Nærøyfjord is a dramatic fjord surrounded by high mountains. Nærøyfjorden is one of the most narrow fjords in Europe and included on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

After your fjord cruise, you arrive in the small village of Gudvangen, nestled in the innermost part of Nærøyfjorden. From here the journey continues with a bus trip through Nærøydalen, with its charming villages and scenic nature landscape. From May-September, the bus travels down the steep hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva. The bus will arrive in Voss, where you continue the tour by train on the Bergen Railway to Bergen, or back to Oslo on round trips.

Note that there are several different ways of completing this tour, both as a round-trip or as a one-way trip. You can, for instance, choose to travel all the way to Bergen the first day and continue the tour as described above in the opposite direction back to Oslo.

The tour may be completed in one day, but we highly recommend that you take your time by adding overnight stays and activities along the route. That way you can enjoy the beautiful scenery or participate in exciting activities! For instance, a kayaking trip, hiking or even going on a fjord safari! There are loads of options for activities and hotels along the route, for example in places such as in Flåm, Voss, Bergen and Oslo.

Reviews of norwegian fjords tours from oslo.

Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

Fjord Cruise in Oslo

Enjoy the scenic Oslofjord on a sightseeing fjord cruise and get an overview of the city and its attractions.

On this fjord sightseeing tour, we pass through narrow sounds, idyllic bays, and through a maze of islands with small summer houses. Oslo, with its superb location, offers unique opportunities on and around its fjord which stretches almost into the city center.

Tour description

You’ll sail past numerous islands, including Hovedøya and the Dyna Lighthouse, through narrow inlets and into sheltered bays so that you can capture the capital on camera from different angles.

We will also sail past the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet House in Bjørvika in inner Oslo Fjord. The Opera House was designed by the architectural firm Snøhetta AS, which won an architectural competition in 2000. It was officially opened on 12 April 2008 and the building has received numerous international awards.

The boat also passes close to the peninsula of Bygdøy, housing many interesting museums as well as beaches such as Huk Bay. See the Maritime Museum with its veteran sailing ships moored outside, and the impressive Fram Museum, housing the polar ship of the same name.

This trip offers a great way to see the capital of Norway and get an overview of the city and all its attractions.

"Scandinavia is just as much and sometimes more about the journey than the destination. It is like watching national geographic out the window as we're driving around the Norwegian Fjords. Driving in to Geiranger in Norway is one of the most stunning drives you can do in the world. I've visited 80 countries and haven't seen any better yet"

Explore Norway's rich seafaring heritage in Oslo

Norway’s remarkable seafaring heritage will unfold in the capital of Oslo, which sits at the head of a 60-mile fjord with a mountainous vista. Spend time walking through four nautical museums clustered together in Bygdøy, and be amazed by ships, instruments, treasures and artefacts from saltier days gone by.

Drive north past fjords, lakes and forests

With this country’s astonishing arrangement of sea, sky and rock, there’s no better way to explore than by taking the road. You will find true appreciation for Norway as we wind past fisherman’s cabins, berry farms and tranquil lakes towards the forests and soul-stirring fjords.

See the beautifully preserved wooden buildings of Stavanger

Travel back to the 18th century with a visit to Gamle Stavanger, a neighborhood of historically preserved houses. Originally home to the sardine canning industry, these white cottages will delight you with their gabled terracotta roofs, cobbled pavements, black lanterns and overflowing flower boxes.

Tour up the hillside by funicular railway in Bergen

Connecting the centre of Bergen with the mountain of Fløyen is the funicular railway, where two vehicles counterbalance each other using cable traction up an inclined slope. The only railway of its kind in Scandinavia, it is one of the most popular things to do in Norway. Admire unrivalled views during this 6-minute voyage.

See the world's best-preserved Viking ships in Oslo

Oslo is home to the world’s best-preserved Viking ships, with a beauty that is testament to both their preservation and original craftsmanship. Take time to view the intricate Viking sagas carved into many of these longships, which were often considered so important their owners were buried in them.

Our top 5 things to do in Norway

Norway’s intrepid history, emotional terrain and European location provide an intriguing mix of activities. Travel with Trafalgar and we will show you the very best.

Viking Ship Museum

Take in the world’s best-preserved Viking ships, the Gokstad, at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. These black, ornate treasures whisper the secrets of Norway’s heritage and highlight the immense skill required for crafting these vessels. Spare time for the Oseberg, a ship used as burial for two women surrounded by burial gifts that can still be seen.

Fortress of Akershus

Strategically located at the very end of Oslo’s headland, the Fortress of Akershus was built in the 1300’s to house and protect the royal. One of the best things to do in Oslo, you will feel the weight of history in a space that withstood a number of sieges throughout the ages and later served as a military base.

Kon-Tiki Museum

Step into the ultimate museum for adventurers and explorers, the Kon-tiki Museum in Oslo. This space is home to a library of 8,000 books as well as vessels and maps pertaining to the infamous 1947 Kon-tiki expedition led by Norwegian writer and explorer, Thor Heyerdahl. Be transported to Polynesia, South America, the Galapagos and beyond.

Best museums in Norway

With a famed history of explorers from the Vikings to Thor Heyerdahl, the museums we visit have rich stories that combine education and enjoyment. Journey with Trafalgar and you will feel Norway’s history at your fingertips.

The Norwegian lefse is a flatbread, strikingly similar to the Mexican tortilla or North Indian roti, with the Nordic variety made with flour and milk or cream with various Nordic fillings. Try it savoury with potatoes and sweet with cinnamon and brown sugar.

Pickled Herring

Experiment with slithers of herring during your Norway trip, trying this fish smoked above a fireplace, raw, boiled, buttered or simmered in beer. A big part of the Norwegian diet still to this day, this meal is a cultural necessity when visiting even if the initial concept makes you squirm.

Traditionally served in Autumn to mark the rounding up and returning of grazing mountain sheep, the lamb, cabbage and potato stew of fårikål can now be enjoyed year-round. Considered the national dish of Norway, it’s a must during trips to Norway, particularly when cool weather rolls in.

Best food in Norway

Enjoy traditional Norwegian food in the very place the meals originated. With simple ingredients and rich flavours, the dishes we share with you on a trip to Norway will connect you with the authentic culinary heritage of the country.

What to pack for Norway

People packing for a tour

Mountain boots

Even if your Norway holiday is more focused on museums and restaurants than trekking and outdoor activities, wearing mountain boots will make you feel at home with the Norwegian spirit. Even if all you do in them is eat fårikål and drink mulled wine.

Sleeping mask

During the Norwegian summer, there are times when the sun never goes down. Pack a sleeping mask if you need a complete blackout in order to sleep.

Even during the winter, ice fields and glacier territory can reflect the sun and burn your skin. Pack sunscreen to save a crimson glow appearing in your holiday photos.

Picnic blanket and a good book

Enjoy the scenery of Norway by finding a moment of stillness in a park with a blanket, a good book and a thermos of coffee. The picnic blanket may take up space in your bag, but it will double as extra warmth when the weather gets cool.

With lots of walking to be done in the forests, mountains and cities, plasters for blisters may prove useful during your trip; particularly if you’re wearing new shoes that haven’t been broken in.

  • Hear the history of reindeer herding and its importance to Sámi culture before taking part in a ceremony to honor the northern lights.
  • Enjoy a cup of chaga tea—a holy drink, made from mushrooms that grow on the trunks of birch trees, said to give you energy and strength—followed by the singing of a traditional Sámi song.
  • Head out into the darkness to search for the aurora borealis.

Please note: This excursion is weather-dependent and seeing the northern lights is not guaranteed.

Get to know the charming town of Narvik this morning. Perched on a peninsula between two minor fjords, this settlement of just over 14,000 people is one of the country’s best-kept secrets.

  • Take a guided tour of the Narvik War Museum. Located in the center of town, it tells the story of the 62-day-long Battles of Narvik and the five ensuing years of Nazi occupation Norway endured during World War II.
  • Board the Narvikfjellet cable car and climb to an altitude of 2,150+ feet above sea level, admiring sweeping views of the area during the four-minute ascent.

Spend a free evening in Narvik or add an excursion.

Head further into the Arctic Circle as you travel to the Tromsø Ice Domes in the Tamok Valley, where a guide will take you through the intricately built structures.

  • Enjoy a welcome drink in an ice shot glass before watching a brief film about the process of designing the domes.
  • Marvel at beautifully carved ice and snow sculptures as you learn about the snow’s impact on Arctic life.
  • Spend time exploring the domes and the surrounding area at your own pace before sitting down for an included lunch at the dome complex.

Transfer to your hotel in Tromsø, a unique city spread across two islands and surrounded by impressive landscapes, and enjoy free time for the rest of the day.

Please note: Warm clothing, hat, scarves, and sturdy footwear are recommended for the visit to the Ice Domes. As they are constructed fully of ice, the Ice Domes are seasonal and open from mid-December to the end of March. When they aren’t open, you’ll head to an ice bar in Tromsø for a drink and an included lunch.

Meet up with a local guide this morning to get to know Northern Norway’s largest city, which sits at the beginning of the Arctic Circle.

  • Ride the Fjellheisen cable car up Mount Storsteinen to an altitude of roughly 1,380 feet above sea level, taking in panoramic views of the city and surrounding fjords.
  • Step inside the Arctic Cathedral, the northernmost cathedral in the world, and admire its Arctic-inspired design.
  • View remnants of Tromsø’s medieval settlement in the city’s historic core, before heading to Stortorget—Tromsø’s main square—to experience its vibrant marketplace.
  • Head to the Polar Museum, situated in a 19th-century waterfront warehouse, to hear the epic tales of Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, and other Arctic explorers and hunters.

Spend a free evening in Tromsø or add an excursion.

Please note: On some departures, entrance to the Arctic Cathedral will take place on day 6.

This evening, head out into the night with a local guide and scour the sky for signs of the aurora borealis. (Keep your eyes peeled: Thanks to its northerly location and low levels of light pollution, Tromsø’s one of the best places in the world to spot the northern lights.)

Please note: This excursion is weather-dependent and seeing the aurora borealis is not guaranteed. On some departures, the northern lights search may take place on day 6.

  • In order to enter Norway, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you’re not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SNL.
  • You’ll walk for at least two hours daily across moderately uneven terrain—including wet, slippery gravel; snow; ice; and paved paths with some uphill climbs.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times, as well as getting in and out of boats, ferries, and trains.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Oslo (or depart from Bergen on the tour extension). A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Please remain in the arrival lounge, as the representative might be escorting one of your fellow travelers to the bus at the time of your arrival.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers from Go Ahead Tours at an additional cost.
  • Flights from Oslo to Narvik, and from Tromsø to Oslo, are included in the price of your tour.
  • Train rides from Oslo to Myrdal and from Myrdal to Flåm, as well as a fjord day cruise, are included in the price of the tour extension.
  • All other transportation included on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Airlines have varying weight restrictions on luggage. Some may impose additional charges if you choose to check any bags; be advised that you’re responsible for any such costs.
  • You may contact your airline for detailed information regarding baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note: Our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections or flights.
  • One carry-on bag is also permitted, provided that it doesn’t exceed 45 total inches (length + width + height).
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Winters in Norway are generally cold. To ensure you’re comfortable during outdoor sightseeing and evening northern lights excursions, we recommend packing a warm coat, hat, gloves, and winter socks, as well as rainwear.
  • We also suggest packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can easily be layered. Avoid wearing cotton whenever possible—it’s an ineffective insulator.
  • A warm, sturdy pair of walking shoes or winter boots is strongly recommended for sightseeing. You may also want to consider bringing ice cleats for better traction.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • Check with your doctor or healthcare provider, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov, at least 60 days prior to departure to review the latest updates and entry requirements.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour, as well as any possible delays you may encounter.
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Norwegian cuisine is varied, offering something for every traveler. Lamb is the most traditional meat, but you’ll also find everything from goose to deer. Seafood lovers will enjoy the country’s array of smoked salmon, shellfish, pickled herring, and scrod. Typical meals often incorporate grains, locally produced cheeses, fresh produce, and wild berries.
  • Norway operates on the European standard of 220–240 volts and uses Type C or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in some European hotels may not be as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it’s usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There’s no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Norway is one hour ahead of GMT and six ahead of EST.
  • The amount of daylight in Norway greatly varies based on the season. Expect as much as 19 hours of daylight in the summer and as little as six in the winter.
  • You will use the Norwegian krone on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you bring debit/bank and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks, as needed.
  • You can use most debit and credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in the local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend that each person tips the equivalent of USD$10 to USD$12 per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of USD$3 per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of USD$2 per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions can be purchased while you’re on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.

Express norway, july 2023, great way to plan a vacation.

Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.

Mary, United States

Lofoten & the fjords, june 2023, excellent company.

Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!

Norway Road Trip - Classic, July 2023

This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.

Aaron, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, july 2023, the itinerary was perfect.

We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.

Paul, Australia

Classic norway at leisure, july 2023, very pleased.

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

Diane, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, july 2023, the trip of a lifetime.

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Barry, United States

Well-organised.

From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.

Anthony, Australia

Classic norway, june 2023, very well-executed.

All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

15 Best Oslo Tours

With a history dating back to the Viking era nearly 1,000 years ago, Oslo was originally established as a small coastal fishing and trading village.

Now, it’s Norway’s capital and most populous city. In recent years, it has become a regional powerhouse in technology, the arts, and even cuisine.

Though it’s downright cold for much of the year, there are a variety of year-round tours and activities close at hand. Many guests choose to visit during the holiday season when the city is awash with Christmas lights, decorations, and happy revelers.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Oslo.

1. Oslo Walking and Fjord Boat Tour with Norwegian Buffet

Oslo

Combo tours are perfect for value-minded travelers intent on making the most of their vacation.

3. Oslo Selected Highlights Half-Day Bus Tour

Oslo Streets

Though there are plenty of tour options for those who prefer to walk, pedal, and paddle, many visitors prefer to see Oslo’s sites from the comfort of a climate-controlled tour bus.

If you fall into the latter category, this four-hour Oslo highlights discovery tour would be a great choice.

Along with your knowledgeable local guide, you’ll see many of the city’s most momentous attractions, like the Holmenkollen ski jump, the Vigeland sculpture park, and the Kon-Tiki Museum, which details the fantastic nautical adventures of Thor Heyerdahl.

Tours last about four hours, begin mid-morning and include a short boat tour between mid-March and mid-October.

4. 3-Hour Beer Tour

Like cities all over the world, Oslo has experienced a microbrew revolution in the past decade; many of its best brews rival those in countries more well-known for beer, like Germany and Belgium.

On this two-hour tasting tour, guests and their guide will venture off the well-worn path and explore neighborhoods and small-batch breweries that don’t get much foot traffic compared to other attractions.

Participants will hang out with locals, learn how beer is made, and sample a variety of brews with many distinct colors, flavor profiles, and alcohol contents.

Tours begin at a central location and include snacks at each stop.

5. 3-hour Kayaking Trip on the Oslofjord

Oslofjord Kayak

For fans of nature who prefer exhilarating tours to ones that require lots of sitting, this kayaking excursion on the Oslofjord would be a great way to spend three hours.

Tours go ahead rain or shine and require a fair amount of physical exertion, so they’re best left to the relatively fit.

Each group gets all the gear they’ll need and an introduction to kayaking, which ensures that everyone has a safe and memorable day.

Highlights include a number of islands, beaches, and bays, as well as some of the most unique and impressive views of the city that those on land won’t get to appreciate.

6. Riverwalk and Norwegian Food Tasting

Oslo Riverwalk

The River Aker cuts through the heart of Oslo, dividing it into east and west portions.

After rendezvousing with their guide outside their hotel, tour guests will take a short ride on the metro to Nydalin Riverwalk, where the tour will get underway.

Though everyone expects to see historical sites, impressive bridges, and the city’s singular skyline, they’re generally pleasantly surprised to see several waterfalls and undisturbed natural areas that are home to a variety of local wildlife species.

Tours last about five hours and end with a guided food tasting at a cozy restaurant in the city’s swank Grünerløkka neighborhood.

7. E-Scooter City Tour

E-Scooter Tour Oslo

E-scooters are fun, safe, and non-polluting means of tour transportation that have really caught on in recent years.

Despite its urban hustle and bustle, Oslo is a scooter-friendly city, and previous tour guests tend to agree that there’s really no better way to explore it.

Oslo is particularly well-known for its fascinating history, unique culture, and abundant green spaces. This tour allows guests to experience all three up close and personally.

Tour highlights include the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, the Bjørvika District, Akershus Fortress, and the Royal Palace, to name just a few.

Tours last 2 ½ hours and are available twice daily.

8. 3-Hour Jazz and Buffet Cruise

Once onboard, guests will have the option of taking in the scenery from inside the cabin or out on the deck, depending on the weather.

Sights also include secluded inlets and colorful summer homes. When it’s time to dine, guests will enjoy live jazz and a Norwegian-style buffet with lots of local specialties and fresh shrimp.

Tours begin in the evening and last about three hours.

9. Hop-On Hop-Off Mini Cruise

At each stop, guests can choose to depart and explore, or just relax on the boat until something perks their interest.

Entrance tickets to each attraction aren’t included, so guests only pay for the things that interest them and not those they choose to skip.

Along the way, they’ll benefit from their guide’s insights into events that shaped the city and country’s history, and they’ll visit sites with macabre pasts and venture from the well-worn tourist paths.

Tours last about 2 ½ hours, begin mid-morning and set out from a central location.

11. Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

What could possibly be more Christmas-y than spending the holidays in a vibrant Scandinavian capital just a stone’s throw from the North Pole?

Tours include the services of a local guide and mulled wine and other hot drinks along the way to instill Christmas spirit and warm cold bodies.

The weather can be frigid, blustery, and icy, so it’s wise to dress in layers and wear warm shoes or boots with good tread.

13. 2 ½-Hour Private Walking Tour of Bohemian Oslo

Oslo Colorful Houses

Though many northern European cities have the reputation of being rather reserved and straight-laced, Oslo is remarkably Bohemian.

This 2 ½-hour walking tour offers guests a ground-view experience as they follow their guide to explore everything from green urban parks and street art to historic attractions and cafés popular with the alternative crowd.

The tour focuses on parts of the city that tend to go unnoticed by more traditional tourists; therein lies much of its charm for those who prefer cultural immersion and unique experiences to the same-old-same-old.

An ever-popular highlight is learning about former resident Edvard Munch – famous for his painting, The Scream.

14. Taste of Oslo Food Tour

Oslo Food Tour

Featuring diverse geography and both traditional and contemporary influences, Norway’s cuisine and food scenes are easy to experience on relatively inexpensive tours when in Oslo.

On this four-hour walking excursion, your guide will introduce you to the unique ingredients, dishes, flavors, and aromas that make the county’s cuisines so delectable.

Beginning at the harbor, guests and their guide will set out to visit a number of eateries with distinct foods, decors, and clientele.

After taking a walk and shopping through Gunerlokka, you can stop and have a picnic in many of the parks throughout the city. The beautiful Akerselva River splits the city into eastern and western sides and borders Gunerlokka. We recommend you visit this part of the town on foot, as you will be able to see the city’s beauties and grab a drink or something to eat at the local cafes, restaurants or pubs. We encourage you to try as much local food as possible while visiting this fantastic city!

Since you are already in Scandinavia, it makes sense to visit other Nordic countries including Stockholm , Sweden.

Putin Ally Says Neighboring Country Will Not Exist in Five Years

Norwegian King Harald V's health is improving but he'll need a permanent pacemaker, palace says

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — King Harald V of Norway is improving but will need a permanent pacemaker after falling ill during a trip to Malaysia, the palace said Monday, as the 87-year-old monarch was transferred to an Oslo university hospital for medical tests.

Harald returned to Norway aboard a medical airplane late Sunday, a day after he was implanted with a temporary pacemaker in the Southeast Asian country after suffering from an infection while on a private holiday at a resort island.

The king arrived Monday at Oslo’s Rikshospital in a vehicle marked “intensive ambulance” under police escort, and several members of the royal family visited him there. The palace said he will be on sick leave for two weeks, during which Crown Prince Haakan will assume the monarch’s duties.

The king’s infection “has come under more control,” but he has “has too low a heart rate, and will need a permanent pacemaker,” the palace said Monday.

“The time for pacemaker insertion is determined by when the king is completely infection-free. This may take several days,” during which he’ll likely remain in the hospital, the statement said.

Europe’s oldest reigning monarch fell ill on the Malaysian resort island of Langkawi during a trip with his wife, Queen Sonja, reportedly to celebrate his 87th birthday.

He underwent surgery in the island’s Sultanah Maliha Hospital on Saturday to implant a temporary pacemaker due to a low heart rate, according to the royal house.

A Scandinavian Airlines medical evacuation plane, which took off from Oslo on Thursday, arrived in Langkawi on Friday. The Boeing 737-700 aircraft has previously been used as a flying ambulance.

According to Flightradar24, the same plane departed from Langkawi on Sunday headed for Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, from where it traveled on to Oslo Airport. The palace said that Sonja was traveling with the king.

According to Norwegian news agency NTB, which cited information from Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the king’s transport to Norway cost an estimated 2 million Norwegian kroner ($190,000), which will come from the defense budget.

The Norwegian monarch has had frail health in recent years with numerous hospital stays, and has been using crutches. Harald had an operation to replace a heart valve in October 2020 after being hospitalized with breathing difficulties.

Harald has repeatedly said he has no plans to abdicate, unlike his second cousin Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who stepped down earlier this year .

Harald’s duties as Norway’s head of state are ceremonial and he holds no political power. He ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Olav, in 1991.
