DP World Tour offers enhanced fan experience via IMG ARENA ShotTracker

DP World Tour

Golf fans can now access detailed shot-by-shot data from their favourite players on the DP World Tour with the launch of ShotTracker on the Tour’s website and app.

The innovative feature, which is available by clicking on a player’s scorecard, provides a range of information including the precise location of a player’s ball, as well as driving, approach shot and putting distances for each shot and the distance to the pin down to the nearest inch on a green.

ShotTracker, which has been created in partnership with IMG ARENA, a leading sports data and technology hub, will also provide information about the type of lie for each shot (e.g., fairways, bunkers, rough, in the trees etc) as well as detailed hole maps.

dp world tour tracker

On-course information is gathered by IMG ARENA’s cutting edge, real time, shot-by-shot data collection system which utilises leading GPS technology, connectivity systems and greenside cameras at every DP World Tournament in Europe and the Middle East.

This data is then collated via the ShotTracker feature which is available via europeantour.com/dpworld and DP World Tour app, starting with this week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and next week’s Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, the first Rolex Series events of 2022.

dp world tour tracker

Fans will therefore be able to follow and learn more about each shot played by some of the world’s leading golfers.

The DP World Tour’s ShotTracker is an evolution of the revolutionary IMG ARENA Golf Event Centre, an industry-first product created in association with the world’s leading golf tours which also enables interactive in-play betting.

Michael Cole, the European Tour group’s Chief Technology Officer, said : “The introduction of ShotTracker further extends our partnership with IMG ARENA, providing fans with a greater statistical offering from our tournaments through shot-by-shot data.

“Alongside our world feed broadcast, fans can now track their favourite players’ performances in even more detail, accessing a wealth of data for each shot struck during their round.

“This is part of our commitment to enhance the fan experience, joining our video-in-scorecard feature which was introduced last year to provide fans with footage of shots within minutes of them being struck.”

Brad van Wely, VP and Head of Product at IMG ARENA,  said: “The launch of the DP World Tour ShotTracker will deliver one of the most sophisticated sports data products ever created and builds on the success of the Golf Event Centre. This is an exciting extension to our relationship with DP World Tour and, through our technology, give golf fans greater insight into how their favourite players are performing and how the tournaments are unfolding.”

The DP World Tour remains in South Africa

T he DP World Tour remains in South Africa, following the SDC Championship, with the upcoming Jonsson Workwear Open. The final event of the International Swing is scheduled from March 7th to 10th in Edenvale, a small city in the East Rand of Gauteng.

Four Italians, Francesco Laporta, Matteo Manassero, Lorenzo Scalise, and Andrea Pavan, will compete in the tournament. Now in its third edition, the DP World Tour event will offer a prize purse of $1,500,000. Nick Bachem will attempt to defend the only title he has won on the circuit so far.

In 2023, the German golfer secured victory by four shots over South Africans Hennie Du Plessis and Zander Lombard, both considered favorites again this year.

Dp, results

Following his impressive performance in the SDC Championship, American Jordan Gumberg will seek to maintain his form on the Glendower Golf Club course.

Alongside Lombard and Du Plessis, who are crowd favorites, contenders will include Thriston Lawrence, Robin Williams (defeated in a playoff last week), Jayden Schaper, and Wilco Nienaber. Additionally, anticipation surrounds Scottish golfers Connor Syme and Ewen Ferguson, Northern Irishman Tom McKibbin, Englishman Jordan Smith, Japanese player Rikuya Hoshino, Swedish golfer Jesper Svensson, Canadian Aaron Cockerill, Spaniard Manuel Elvira, Dutch players Darius Van Driel and Joost Luiten, and French golfers Antoine Rozner and Julien Guerrier.

As for the Italian contingent, Laporta finished 16th in the SDC Championship after consistently being within the Top 10 for the first three rounds. Manassero, placing 36th, showed signs of improvement. Meanwhile, Scalise, ranking 47th, is in good form, as evidenced by his 11th place finish at the Magical Kenya Open in Nairobi.

Pavan, after three consecutive missed cuts, will be looking for redemption. The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are applied outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respect for the rules is a basic element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on the self-control and free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to non-compliance on the part of many players of the game rules.

In addition to rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the round with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.

Meet alison whitaker, the groundbreaking television host u.s. viewers hear but rarely see, share this article.

dp world tour tracker

Alison Whitaker was having lunch on her birthday in China at a Ladies European Tour event when someone from the television crew asked if she’d be interested in filling in during the coverage later that day.

The affable Aussie said sure, she’d love to. The crew member went on to explain that ideally, they’d like to have a European voice. Whitaker said no worries, she’d be around for another 40 minutes in player dining if they couldn’t find a better option. Either way, no hard feelings.

“Lucky for me, they didn’t find anyone,” Whitaker said with a laugh. By the end of the day, she’d been offered a contract for the following season.

That was a decade ago, and now Whitaker, the former Duke player with the razor-sharp mind and infectious personality, is busy crisscrossing the globe making history in the commentary box.

LPGA Hall of Fame player and television trailblazer Judy Rankin calls Whitaker the most versatile person in broadcasting. She can walk the fairways as an on-course reporter and serve as both an analyst and lead host – sometimes in the same week.

Whitaker, 38, will be in the booth at this week’s Blue Bay LPGA event in China but does most of her work in the men’s game on the DP World Tour and is mostly off-camera, making her a sneaky low-profile TV personality.

“She’s tremendous,” said Rankin, adding that “here, she’s definitely under the radar except for the true golf junkies who watch a lot of the European Tour and so on.”

Whitaker made it to Durham, North Carolina, via a 2005 American summer tour that culminated in a semifinal appearance at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, where she beat future LPGA players Ryann O’Toole, Maria Uribe and Amanda Blumenherst before falling to finalist Maru Martinez.

dp world tour tracker

Alison Whitaker played for Duke from 2006 to 2010. (courtesy Duke athletics)

When Whitaker arrived at Duke, the mood of the team lightened, recalled Blumenherst. She’d be the one printing out the lyrics to the “Little Mermaid” to bring in the team van. When Blumenherst played her last competitive round at the Evian Championship 11 years ago, Whitaker was there on the last hole to give her a hug.

Blumenherst was actually working for the Golf Channel on set when she first heard Whitaker’s voice on a broadcast. She watched as someone hit a thin shot out of a bunker that caught the top edge, prompting Whitaker to say, “Oh, those lips don’t lie.”

Right from the start, Blumenherst said, it seemed Whitaker belonged on television.

At one point this season, it looked like Whitaker might be on the road working events for 17 straight weeks. She deleted a few in the middle so she’d remember where to put the coffee mugs at her home in Melbourne. She’ll typically work five to seven weeks in a row and then have a couple off.

Saying yes to television was made rather easy given that she’d been battling glandular fever and vertigo as a touring pro. Plus, she absolutely loved it, noting that her work ethic exploded.

For many former players in the commentary world, television feels like the next stage. But for Whitaker, professional golf felt more like the lead-up to what she was meant to be doing.

When Whitaker first got recruited to work on the LET, she was in her late 20s, which was young for the time. After working the LPGA’s Asian swing and some of the men’s and women’s events in Australia, Whitaker started covering the DP World Tour for European Tour Productions, which provides the world feed for Golf Channel and Sky Sports, among others.

“She’s the most conscientious, diligent person I’ve ever come across,” said booth mate Tony Johnstone. “I think she’s surrounded by more laptops than when they put Apollo on the moon.”

Covering the men’s game meant that Whitaker had a lot to learn in a short amount of time, given that playing professional golf on a women’s tour leaves little time to watch the men.

Sitting next to men in the commentary box who had witnessed something firsthand that Whitaker had only read about drove her to work the range and talk to as many people as possible.

Even so, it was deeply intimidating.

“You kind of just have to make sure you fill your shoes with a little bit of self-belief,” said Whitaker, “which is so much harder than people would think when you’re sitting down the row from Nick Faldo and Trevor Immelmann, and I’m just trying to convince myself to talk.”

That’s where Whitaker’s strong sense of humor comes into play. She has learned to laugh about mistakes and give herself a bit of grace. When it comes to the naysayers online, her family provides some levity, particularly when bad grammar and typos are involved.

“Like many women in men’s realms, especially in sport, I’ve got a healthy dose of imposter syndrome,” said Whitaker, “which I’m trying to get in check, but at the same time it fuels me.”

dp world tour tracker

Alison Whitaker and Iona Stephen pose for a picture at the TV compound. (courtesy photo)

Iona Stephen’s first memory of meeting Whitaker was at the 2019 BMW PGA Championship while working for Golfing World. Whitaker warmly introduced herself, and they sat down for a drink. Right from the start, Stephen felt this was a woman she could trust.

Fast forward to the global pandemic, when Stephen was early into her work as an on-course reporter covering the DP World Tour and tasked with interviewing some of the biggest names in golf – live. It was a tough time learning a new business during the isolated era of Covid, but as luck would have it, Stephen was in a shared accommodation space with Whitaker that week. Stephen grabbed a decorative shell and used it as a pretend microphone as she conducted mock interviews with Whitaker until midnight.

“I’ll never forget that,” said a grateful Stephen.

Whitaker started working the lead of men’s broadcasts toward the end of 2020. With little advice to go on, she dove in, unaware of all the ways she’d soon be making history.

In addition to working as the lead host covering on the DP World Tour on a consistent basis, Whitaker became the first female lead at the Open Championship three years ago at Royal St. George’s for the world feed, as well as at the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. Last year, she was the first female lead on a men’s major for Sky Sports at the PGA Championship.

David Mould, director of live television at the European Tour Group, said Whitaker is also the first person on the world feed to work as both a lead host and analyst, which she does for the DP World Tour’s high-profile Rolex Series events.

“I don’t think Alison realizes how good she is,” said Mould, “and maybe that’s a good thing because it drives her forward to try and be better.”

Whitaker is humble about the history and mostly wants to help other women join her on course and in the booth. She’s open to sharing all of her tricks and tips. And when the pressure gets to be too much, as it invariably does in a profession in which mistakes are amplified, she’s the first to offer those in her small girl gang a hug.

“The environment when I got into it was very competitive because there wasn’t enough room for more women,” said Whitaker. “It felt like there was one woman on each crew and everyone was quite defensive of their patch.”

She describes Thomas Bjorn as her security bear. He’s quick to make sure everyone is taken care of, she said, and will march into any room to make things happen. He’s even fought a few battles for Whitaker, just so she doesn’t have to.

“When you hang out with him, you can see why so many guys respect him and look to him as a leader,” she said. “I got to know that more after his Ryder Cup captaincy when I started to work with him more. He just gets things so right, and he takes care of you.”

dp world tour tracker

Whitaker often works broadcasts without ever being seen on camera. (courtesy photo)

The team environment means much to Whitaker, a noted foodie and wine expert who can direct pals to brilliant food haunts around the world.

Whitaker notes that Scotland’s Ken Brown has a contagious laugh that can heard buildings over. He presented her a watercolor for Christmas – someone pulling a sleigh down a snowy street – and it became an instant treasure.

Richard Kaufman and Kate Burton were early mentors as she started covering the LET. Her goal every day was to find something that Kaufman didn’t know.

At the 2015 Solheim Cup, Whitaker sat in a box with Burton, who was working lead for the first time. At the end of the first day, Burton asked Whitaker to give her one thing she liked, and one thing she could work on for the next day. Learning how to take feedback is very hard to do, Burton explained, but it’s the only way to get better.

“What a massive lesson to learn,” said Whitaker. “Between the two of them, I got work ethic, and the secrets on how to try and improve.”

Of course, Whitaker’s favorite stories to tell are the ones when things didn’t go as planned. Like the time the air-conditioner died during the Joburg Open in South Africa and they had to put their phones in the fridge before finishing up a Sky Sports interview. Not to mention the black mamba curled up under the portable toilet.

“I hope to have a career of that,” said Whitaker. “I don’t want it to be too polished.”

Barely Playing in a Tour, but Winning Its Championship Anyway

This will happen this year at the DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai.

Adrian Meronk at the end of a swing, his club aloft. Behind him, a line of spectators gaze in the distance.

By Paul Sullivan

The DP World Tour will end its season at the championship in Dubai, which starts on Thursday, as it has done for more than a decade. But like the past several seasons, the winner of the Race to Dubai championship will be someone who has played sparingly on the tour itself. In fact, this may be its most anti-climactic finale yet.

This stands in stark contrast to the PGA Tour, where its FedEx Cup series funnels golfers into playing as many events on that tour as possible to accumulate points.

It wasn’t always this way. The Race to Dubai is an honor that dates well-before the FedEx Cup. It began in 1937 as the Order of Merit. Charles Whitcombe won the inaugural one. Subsequent winners are a who’s who of European golfers, including multiple winners like the Ryder Cup stalwarts Colin Montgomerie with eight and Seve Ballesteros with six.

But this year is another in which the closing event feels like a showcase for stars who have been largely absent from the tour. Rory McIlroy , a four-time winner of the Race to Dubai, and Jon Rahm, who won it in 2019, are in first and second place, but after last weekend’s Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa, no one can catch McIlroy.

And that makes the disconnect with the season-ending race even starker. The two players are ranked second and third in the world golf rankings. And they’re stalwarts of the European Ryder Cup team. But McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Rahm of Spain have hardly played this season on the DP World Tour. And while McIlroy is set to play in the event, he could skip it and still be crowned the winner for the fifth time.

Of the 43 events on the tour, McIlroy has played nine and is in first place in the Race To Dubai; Rahm has played seven to sit in second and the drama has turned to whether they will repeat as champion of the tournament itself. In third place is Adrian Meronk of Poland, who has played 23 tournaments on the DP World Tour.

Meronk is a lock to win another prize: full membership on the PGA Tour. This goes to the top 10 finishers in the Race to Dubai who are not already on the PGA Tour, which has higher purses and earns more points for the world golf rankings; it also means Meronk will probably, like McIlroy and Rahm, play more on the PGA Tour than on the DP World Tour next season.

Welcome to the new abnormal of golf, in which European Tour champions barely play on the tour. How did we get here? It’s complicated.

In the scrambled world of professional golf, with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour working together to stave off the threat from LIV Golf, the new Saudi Arabia-backed league, new incentives abound. And they’re upending the existing order.

While there is a tentative agreement with LIV to pause litigation between it and the tours, one of their big concerns is players being lured away with more lucrative LIV contracts. But at the heart of the current agreement between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour is a system for the highest-ranked players in Europe to play in the United States on the PGA Tour.

The leaderboard for the Race to Dubai is the result of two factors: how certain events, like the four majors, are sanctioned by the two tours and thus earn more points; and the higher number of points awarded to other elevated events. Because dominant players like McIlroy and Rahm compete in events with stronger fields, they end up earning more points by playing well in fewer events.

In McIlroy’s case, only four of his nine events that got credited toward the Race to Dubai were DP World Tour events; the others were on or sanctioned by the PGA Tour. With Rahm, it was fewer: only two of his seven tournaments.

It’s not the first time this has happened. Last year, McIlroy won the Race to Dubai (and Rahm won the DP World Tour Championship) with a similar amount of play on the DP World Tour.

In 2021, Collin Morikawa, a full member of the PGA Tour, became the first American to win the Race to Dubai. He also won the British Open, but only played in two other events outside the United States: the Scottish Open (which is also sanctioned by the PGA Tour) and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. In neither event did he finish inside the top 50.

By contrast, this year Meronk played the four majors and the other 19 events on the DP World. While he is third in the Race to Dubai, he is ranked only 46th in the world because he earned fewer points from the European events.

Victor Hovland of Norway is ranked 14th in the Race to Dubai, but is the fourth-best player in the world rankings. Again, it’s the value of the points. He is credited with seven DP World Tour events, but all but one, the BMW PGA Championship, are also sanctioned by the PGA Tour.

At its core, the list of contenders for the Race to Dubai is a mix of players who did well in DP World Tour events and will move up to the PGA Tour, and players who have played well at the majors and other co-sanctioned events. The result is a season-ending tournament and season-long prize that could be more confusing than climactic.

In fact, the real drama may lie with the final player on the P.G.A. promotion list, Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark, who jumped five spots into 16th place.

That spot had been held until the last tournament by Joost Luiten of the Netherlands, who dropped five spots after last week and is now in 22nd place. Both Hojgaard and Luiten have played over 20 events each on the DP World Tour to get an opportunity to play more on the PGA Tour and thus less on the DP tour next season.

On the flip side, current PGA Tour players who finish outside the top 125 on the money list get full membership on the DP World Tour, for numbers 126 to 200 .

When this was announced last month, David Howell, chairman of the DP World Tour’s Tournament Committee, categorized the demotion to that tour as a positive for players. “When we announced our strategic alliance with the PGA Tour in November 2021, one of the prime objectives was to give as many opportunities as possible to members of both tours,” he said. “This is another perfect example of how this is working.”

An agent who represents players on the DP World Tour and LIV Golf said that elevating one group to the PGA Tour and demoting another group onto the DP World Tour was further dividing professional golf ranks. It has made it more difficult, the agent said, for many players to gain the world golf ranking points to get them into the majors and other marquee tournaments.

“All these PGA Tour events sit way above the European Tour in world golf ranking points,” said the agent, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid the ramifications of speaking publicly about the Tour. “They had an argument that the depth on the PGA Tour was better than anywhere else, so how could you be top 100 on PGA Tour and 300th in the world. I get it. But that pushed the European Tour into a corner. It made it into this feeder tour.”

Next year the format will change and be more like the FedEx Cup, where players qualify for an event and then the field shrinks with each tournament. So it will be 70 players at the Abu Dhabi Championship and 50 players at the final DP World Tour Championship in 2024.

What it comes down to is getting the sport’s stars to play in those final European Tour events, regardless of how much they have played on the tour during the season.

“The season-long narrative is for the die-hard golf geeks,” the agent said. “The average sports enthusiast just wants to see superstars. The commercial product lives and dies by it.”

Unification between PGA and LIV Golf ‘inevitable’, claims DP World Tour chief

  • Keith Pelley says collective product is in best interests of golf
  • Rory McIlroy fears golf will remain ‘fractured forever’

The departing DP World Tour chief executive, Keith Pelley, says unification between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is “inevitable”, even if it takes 10 years.

Golf’s civil war has rumbled on for two years since LIV, the big-money Saudi breakaway venture, began tempting a host of top names with lavish paydays.

after newsletter promotion

“Whether it be in six months, a year, two years or 10 years, I think people are coming to the realisation that a collective product is in the best interest of global golf,” Pelley told the Sunday Times. “It is the only way growth and prize funds continue at this level. It is inevitable.”

Rory McIlroy said recently he fears golf will remain “fractured forever” unless the opportunity to create a more global game is embraced.

The four-time major winner, initially an outspoken critic of LIV, has suggested a world tour incorporating “corporate America” and Saudi Arabian investment, but one which also elevates historic national Opens in places such as Australia and South Africa.

“I’m very much aligned with Rory,” said Pelley. “Rory is the player I have lent on the most, going back to the beginning. You need people who aren’t afraid to say what they really think.”
