The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery ‘s Season 4 finale. Proceed accordingly.

“Hope springs eternal” was the central thesis for Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 4 finale as our heroic crew persisted with their efforts to save Earth and Ni’Var from total catastrophe.

They faced huge obstacles in Thursday’s episode, including the DMA barreling towards both planets, Tarka in the final stages of his plan to blow up the DMA (which would be disastrous for all involved) and the Ten-C ignoring Burnham’s attempts at contact.

General Ndoye (played by Phumzile Sitole) helmed a shuttle that crashed into Book’s ship, knocking it off course but directly into the path of the hyperfield. Efforts to transport Book to Discovery failed and he was presumed dead, leaving Burnham devastated. But with the DMA still a threat, Burnham pulled herself together and led the crew straight to the Ten-C for one last attempt at diplomacy.

Realizing the destruction and grief they’ve caused with their device, Ten-C agreed to stop using the DMA. However, they did use it one last time to send the Discovery crew home. Plus, we learned that Book — who appeared before them safe and sound  — survived because the Ten-C intercepted his transport.

David Ajala in Star Trek: Discovery

The hour ended on an optimistic note, with a voiceover from Burnham confirming that Ni’Var joined the Federation while Andoria was in talks to do the same. And in a surprising twist, politician and activist Stacey Abrams appeared as the President of United Earth to announce that they’re also ready to rejoin the Federation.

In the conversation below , TVLine spoke with director-producer Olatunde Osunsanmi about how it came together as well as what to expect in Season 5. (The series was renewed back in January .)

TVLINE | How did that cameo from Stacey Abrams come together? Wilson Cruz has a relationship with her, and he asked [showrunner] Michelle Paradise and [executive producer] Alex Kurtzman if they’d be willing jump on the phone with her. It turned out that she is a legit fan, quoting dialogue from episodes. [They tried to see which part worked for her] and ended up choosing President of Earth.

She came on set and everybody’s head exploded, because 90 percent of the crew didn’t know she was coming. You could just see necks break like, ‘What?! Stacey? What is going on?’ She killed it. She knew her lines, knew the intentions and motivations behind them, delivered them great and understood the blocking that I was trying to do with it. It was really strange to be directing Stacey Abrams, but it was really cool at the same time. Sonequa [Martin-Green]’s head was exploding. She had a good time talking to her between takes and then performing with her on camera. It was really special.

TVLINE | Book and Burnham’s conversation with Ten-C about the destruction they’ve caused with the DMA sounded familiar to conversations we’re currently having about how big corporations are impacting the environment. What was the inspiration behind that dialogue? Sometimes those corporations do understand the impact they’re having on society and they don’t care, and that’s what was interesting about the Ten-C. What side do they fit on? And if they’re this advanced, how could they not know? It’s comforting to think that not everything is evil. Sometimes there just needs to be diplomacy, and people need to make connection and come to an understanding to stop horrible things from happening.

Connection is something Michelle and Alex love to write, and it’s also a big part of what Star Trek is — diplomacy and understanding each other. The Star Trek themes always seem to be very appropriate for what is happening in real life, whether it be Ukraine or the environment or Black Lives Matter. It always seems to resonate with what’s happening in real time.

TVLINE | Did you always know that you were going to bring Book back? What went into the decision to keep him alive on the show? When I first read the outline, I was like, ‘What’s going on here? Are we killing Book?’ He survived, thank God. When we got to the script, I knew better call David Ajala and let him know so he doesn’t have total meltdown while he’s reading it [for the first time during the table read.] I never got an opportunity to tell the rest of the cast, and you could just see their heads exploding during the table read.

It was always in the plan to not kill him, to believe he’s dead and then actually have him survive at the end. Earlier in the season, we didn’t quite know how that would occur. [There was a moment in Episode 2 where the audience wasn’t sure Book survived the DMA.]  Michelle asked me not to make that moment too dramatic because she didn’t want anybody to think that he was dead so that it wouldn’t step on what happens in the finale.

Sonequa Martin-Green and Stacey Abrams in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 finale

TVLINE | Have you begun planning Season 5? We have started the very early part of prep. I think it’s going to be an unbelievable adventure. Michelle has more adventure teed up for this season than ever before, but is also looking into the past; just with themes of science and trying to keep it Trek . Because we’re creating cannon, we can do almost anything. The thing that keeps it Trek is its history and what has come before, so it’s always trying to test that out a little bit. Season 5 will probably push that to the extreme.

TVLINE | There’s time travel in other Star Trek shows. Do you think a crossover is possible? It would be a lot of fun to show up on the Picard set and shoot there with the Discovery crew… A lot of cross-shooting and exchanging occurs between Strange New Worlds and Discovery because we’re a quick car ride away. [They use the same sets.] Usually, our sets don’t appear on the show as the same set because we’ve altered them. But there is a lot of sharing that goes on, and it would be fun to share within the show.

What did you think of Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 4 finale? Grade the episode below and sound off in the comments.

SA could not be a governor in real life so she decided to play a pretended president in TV Scifi show as a consolation price!! LOL!

Those words will come back to haunt you when she wins on November 8, 2022 lol

Yeah, she’ll be one come January 2023… and maybe eventually president.

It was nice of the future governor of Georgia to make a cameo appearance as the President of Earth. This great lady will make a great governor and future President.

Your statement could be true if you are comparing Stacy to Kamala!!

Just another politician who chooses fame over the American people. No thank you.

Barack and Donald both wanted to be cult leaders and gods instead of presidents.

And here I thought that rewarding election conspiracy theorists was a bad idea since it undermines peoples’ faith in the electoral process. But then this show has been getting worse with every season, so I guess that’s one way to go boldly where no one has gone before…

Then don’t watch it, and we’ll all be saved from hearing from you.

And your low level expectations is why it keeps getting worse. So enjoy!

I guess being miserable comes with being wrong so often.

Looks like you are one of those who wants a fascist dictatorship…if you are watching STP, you must think that the alternate timeline that Q(!!!) created was paradise…

Lmao this is an alternative universe it would have to be

This show is an embarrassment in every possible way.

In a word disappointing to dragged out and enough of Book & Burnham get back to the roots of star trek not this mush of cake The avenues are endless but get on with it they could have tied all that nonsense of interpersonal relationships along with an adventure not a fall asleep dragged out season of nothing ness no spark there sorry Pink Skins !!!

Thank you. I thought so too that we have too much of Book and Burnham. Too much of talking feelings that go nowhere. I want to see Trek adventures not soap operas. Please also get rid of “lets fly”! I cringe every time she says it. Come on, starships don’t fly.

From Webster’s definition of flight: 2a : a passing through the air or through space outside the earth’s atmosphere I cringe every time someone boldly goes where no stupid person has gone before. Congrats!

Stacey effing Abrams showing up completely took me out of the show. It was ridiculous. Was Hillary not available? At least they acknowledge that Abrams can only be elected to office via science fiction…

She’s been previously elected to office. Also, you can admit that your objection is at least in part politically partisan. Not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just more honest.

Not only has she been previously elected to office, but the only way she was “beaten” was to cheat big time…purging hundreds of thousands from voter roles, making voting much more difficult for black people and any and all means they could find to cheat and steal. And now they are worried that this might not be enough, so they are trying to install all their partisans on local election boards…and, if even that is not enough, letting them just overturn results they do not like. These people should at least be honest about their hatred of democracy!

And 2023… and beyond.

Please, please, please keep Star Trek non political. It us our last best hope for pure entertainment.

Star Trek has always been political, though… You think having a black woman on the crew off TOS wasn’t political? Picard and Janeway’s many, many diplomatic speeches and diatribes… The whole of DS9… To make Star Trek non-political would be the antithesis of what Trek *is*

Not to mention Earth & Federation have always been very progressive in their beliefs and their desire to help and accept everyone. They don’t talk about building walls to keep out refugees, they go out there and embrace them. They don’t hate people for being different, they accept them with warmth and love. The very foundation of the Federation is also based on socialism. The Prime Directive is a liberal doctrine against imperialism too.

Right?!?! Reading some of these comments I have no idea why these folks like Trek. It seems to stand for everything they hate. Of course the show runners wanted Stacey— her policies are very on par with the federation. It literally makes no sense that they call themselves trek fans.

What does For April, With Love mean?

April Nocifora is a producer on Discovery. She’s also a writer who’s worked on several shows over the years and has been involved in the Star Trek franchise since 1994. She’s been battling cancer for over two years and has documented her struggle.

I absolutely love this show but they lost me today. I watch to enjoy the Star Trek legacy but putting a spot light on such a divisive political figure is abhorrent at best. Sorry I’m now out

Serious question: how is she divisive?

She’s not, she’s just hated by Republicans because they fear her.

She’s divisive because she believes in (and works very hard for) fair elections. For one side (guess which) that is the last thing they want…

Works hard!! You have got to be kidding! Well if whine and complain counts as work then I guess so.

Trumpsters wouldn’t be so afraid of her if that was all she did. But, among other things, when they purge hundreds of thousands from voter rolls, she goes out and gets them registered…and in record numbers! When they enact even more egregious “laws” designed to help them cheat, she fights them tooth and nail in court. She does these things in Georgia and in the rest of the U.S. She is a modern-day hero who fights for the remnants of our democracy when too many want to give up…and so many of the rest want it demolished in the name of some fascist dictatorship. And this last thing is not really even hyperbole…what else can you call it when you use such blatant lies as a pretext to overturn an election…and when that doesn’t work, make sure it does the next time…

I seriously and absolutely love this show but they lost me today. I watch to enjoy the Star Trek legacy but putting a spot light on such a divisive political figure is abhorrent at best. Sorry I’m now out because they absolutely ruined it with her appearance. Disgusting

I am with you. Was looking forward to watching the next episode tonight of season 4 before the finale but with this news, I am done with Discovery. As a Trekkie, I just want the entertainment not what I get on news every day. This is just being thrown in our faces. She can continue to believe she was robbed of the governorship of Ga but Donald Trump can’t complain— really??? Done sadly.

That is an extremely false equivalence. The republican methods of cheating are all out in the open and well documented. The other side’s claims are entirely pulled from the nether regions…yeah, maybe it was Dr. Fauci conspiring with President Zelensky! And, besides, she never incited riots that killed 5 cops.

Turned this into a soap opera more worried about a captains boyfriend than the needs of the many.

How does the Governor of Georgia have time to make a cameo in a television show?

She does it about nine months before she takes office.

Had no idea who that was. Makes no difference to me.

Once I saw her I just said nope, and stopped watching.

The lovely Ms. Abrams should win an Emmy for this performance. It was masterful, and I truly BELIEVED that she was President of Earth! If only she really was, this planet would be much better off. We would actually go to the stars instead of watching it happen on TV!

Its unfortunate that they would choose a divisive political figure: regardless of whether its a divisive Democrat or Republican or even Independent (since there have been those also, Ross Perot for example).

Unfortunately political tribalism incites emotional reactions and distracts from the rational consideration of ideas. If they wish to try to impart a political idea, doing so via the analogy in a story may be effective. Merely highlighting a particular individual politician merely distracts from that and turns away part of the audience they might have preferred to reach with their message. Its unclear if these people live in such an incredibly isolate bubble that they may have no idea how many people will experience a visceral hatred of members of a different political tribe and be turned off for no good reason. Personally I just think the politician in this case is vastly overrated and not that bright and doesn’t deserve to be put on the pedestal clueless fans give her.

The problem with American politics is that it’s all a cult of personality. No intelligence needed, merely have a popular catch phrase and make promises that appeal to a large number or people. If you win, great, if you lose perhaps that’s even better, because then you can claim the election was stolen from you. Abrams and Trump have both played this card, and so did Hillary via the “Russian interference” nonsense.

The best part of her appearance is watching the worst people on this site absolutely filling their diapers in impotent rage over it.

You love to see it.

Love the writing, the diversity in humanity as well as alien diversity. The challenge of finding a way to communicate with an advanced life form, the ten-c, was a really interesting story. Thanks for making this show possible. It represents the kind of future I hope we have.

You have to wonder how Stacy Abrams appearance in this show impacts compliance with campaign financing and equal access for all candidates given that she is in a active campaign right now.

But..but..but..only one* party gets away with skirting laws bcuz that party wrote/judicates them! Ha!

Really, ST Disco should try to get praise for writing..not personal politics * . It’s the best way to keep audience/sponsors happy without offending a few.

SA is much better actress than unity politician. ☮️

Nice to see Stacey Abrams wants to be treated like a rock star and a celebrity. Politicians never care about the American people. It’s all about milking your image for a sad little fantasy.

Remember this when she’s elected, raises taxes AGAIN, and tells you that you’d be worse off without her.

This is clearly a dog whistle to show their political perspective … so be it. I’m done with that series. Congratulations, you destroyed Star Trek.

I love all Star Trek, but I believe politics should be left out of it. I don’t care what side you are on but when you bring politics into a great show like Discovery you tend to alienate some viewers. Of course most people don’t care as long as it’s for their side. Reading through the comments I see that this has started some arguments and the way people are treating each other here is shameful.

I meant to say this kind of politics. ST has always been political such as highlighting the issues of the times. Supporting and endorsing political figures should be left out.

Too much touchy feelly in Discovery. It’s not Trek!

If they had used a Conservative politician would Liberals complain about it? I think so and the headline by TVLine would be “Controversy”.

Oh brother-how many comments have viewers knickers in a knot over the brief appearence of Stacy Abrams! She was on for about 7 minutes and some of you are going to stop watching Discovery? Geez in a word get over yourself! Season 4 was very good well plotted & paced. The final episode was excellent. I like the way that the producers presented the Ten C and how the group learned to communicate with them. I am looking forward to season 5 and what is next for the crew of Discovery

Amen! This show…and almost all of the rest of ST…presents a positive and optimistic outlook, quite different from so much other “sci-fi” which too often weighs so heavily on the militaristic view. In this sense, the appearance of Stacey Abrams was totally appropriate, because that is exactly the sort of attitude she has in real life, working so hard to achieve that positive outcome despite all the cards being stacked against her (and the rest of us poor schlubs). Bravo to SA and Bravo to ST for note being afraid to lose a few viewers…

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 episode 13 review: "A total cop-out of an ending"

Star Trek Discovery season 4 episode 13

GamesRadar+ Verdict

After a barnstorming opening half delights in putting the crew in harm’s way, the final act undoes all that hard work with a total cop-out of an ending – it’s season 4 in a nutshell.

Warning: This Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 13 review contains major spoilers – many of them set to stun. Boldly go further at your own risk…

How much should the ending of a movie or TV show define what’s come before? Can a quality conclusion redeem a mediocre story? Does a botched finale mean the good work that’s come before should be written off? These may be the deepest questions posed by the Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finale, truly a tale of two halves.

For much of its runtime, 'Coming Home' is one of the strongest installments of this confused run, a spectacular piece of space opera that feels like it’s splurged half a season’s worth of VFX budget, while (almost) making the ups and downs of the previous episodes worthwhile.

But as the episode enters its final act, every overstretched minute feels like it’s putting a dent in the star rating – and for a season as inconsistent as this one, that feels entirely appropriate.

With the DMA just four hours from Earth and Ni’Var, it’s red alert across the board. For the first time since Discovery passed the Galactic Barrier, the story takes us back to the Alpha Quadrant, where the returning Tilly – how the show has missed her – and her loyal cadets are aiding the rescue operation. Unfortunately, even with the full might of Starfleet at his disposal, Admiral Vance only has the capacity to rescue a tiny fraction of the people living on the planets in the firing line.

If that serves as a reminder of what Captain Burnham and her crew are fighting for, it doesn’t make the task ahead any easier. Having broken free of the mysterious orb encasing Discovery, Tarka is still on his one-man mission to destroy the power source behind the DMA – with Book and Reno seemingly powerless to do anything about it. Meanwhile, Species 10-C have brought negotiations to an abrupt halt, and Discovery is going nowhere. Who or what can save them now?

You can just about forgive the blatant deus ex machina as Book stumbles upon a cat collar with the capability to disrupt forcefields – Grudge has an established dislike of holograms, after all – and the convenient hypothesis that firing up the spore drive will allow Discovery to blast out of 10-C captivity. Trek has a long history of using long-standing tech in new ways to get crews out of a jam, and the consequences to this drastic course of action are never in doubt – after burning out the drive, the only way for the crew to get home will be a decades-long journey at warp speed. Think Star Trek: Voyager, but in the 32nd century. This is truly edge-of-the-seat stuff, and the stakes get even higher when – once free of the orb – the crew realise that the only way to stop Tarka is to send someone on a suicide mission to remove the rogue ship from the equation – with Book unlikely to survive.

What follows is arguably the most powerful scene of the season: when Burnham coolly commands Detmer – the best pilot on board – to fly the shuttle, the glances exchanged between the doomed pilot and a tearful Owosekun convey more drama than numerous pages of dialogue. So, when United Earth General Ndoye volunteers to take her place – making amends for aiding Book and Tarka’s escape – it feels like a minor cop out. Compared to what follows, however, the misstep barely registers.

Because – like an episode of The Simpsons – the second half of 'Coming Home' does all it can to get everything back to normal, ensuring that season 5 will begin in a spookily similar place to season 4.

Thought communication with the 10-C might get rather difficult seeing as Discovery barely understands their language? No problem, now that the crew have become fluent in a matter of hours. Concerned Discovery was trapped outside the Milky Way without a spore drive to carry them home? Fear not, the 10-C can use a wormhole to send them back in an instant.

And you remember how you felt when JJ Abrams’ pretended Chewbacca was dead in The Rise of Skywalker ? This season finale performs a similar bait-and-switch manoeuvre on numerous occasions, rescuing Ndoye at the last second, ensuring Vance and Tilly’s final drink isn’t quite the last orders they expected it to be, and – most egregious of all – putting Burnham through the emotional wringer of thinking she’s lost Book, only to have the 10-C resurrect him via a transporter technicality. When even the Marvel Cinematic Universe can have the courage to kill off Iron Man and have him stay dead, there’s something seriously wrong with Discovery’s storytelling when every regular character – with the exception of Tarka – survives the biggest threat the Federation has ever faced. But in the 32nd century, it seems the famous Kobayashi Maru test has morphed into a rather less compelling no-lose scenario – for the second season finale in a row.

While having US politician and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams appear as the Federation president is a lovely touch, the final quarter of the episode is a slog, a Return of the King -like succession of quasi-endings that send the crew on holiday, see characters exchanging numerous platitudes, and bring Ni’Var and Earth back into the Federation.

In fact, now that Burnham has effectively confirmed that she’ll be the first Discovery captain to keep the chair for a second year, the only significant question ahead of season 5 is what Kovich and Bryce have been up to since Discovery blasted out of the galaxy. Hopefully, the writing team can find more worthwhile answers than the underwhelming story of Species-10C and their wandering DMA.

'Star Trek: Discovery' finishes Season 4 with a disappointing finale. Again.

Against all odds, a happy ending is ensured as Paramount continues to take the show in a very contemporary direction

Thank heavens the 2nd season of "Star Trek: Picard" looks like it might have some teeth, cause this doesn't

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 4, episode 13

Well, here we are. Again. It's fourth time around for the finale of "Star Trek: Discovery" on Paramount Plus . After a somewhat disjointed 13-episode season, that felt like it was following an almost identical template to last season and made up of two very different halves, we have the concluding episode, entitled "Coming Home."

We've mentioned in the past that the most consistent thing with "Star Trek: Discovery" is how inconsistent it is and this season finale doesn't do anything to alter our opinion. Looking back at all 13 episodes, we've seen some glimpses of absolute genius, we've seen some abhorrently lazy writing and we've seen just about everything in-between. With the last season also giving us a lame season finale, there was quite a lot riding on this one, and while it's better than last season , Discovery's season four ender is not without its faults … and sadly, there are quite a lot of those. What makes it worse, is that we said something almost exactly the same a year ago. Very little seems to have changed.

We open straightaway with the Federation HQ itself at warp and preparing for evacuation as the dark matter anomaly looms ever closer to the Alpha Quadrant and who do we see helping to direct proceedings, but Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) whose contribution to this episode is humble, but it's unquestionably a highlight. It arrives at Sector 001 along with a fleet of starships including the USS Mitchell (named after "Star Trek" actor Kenneth Mitchell who played Aurellio in Season 3) and the USS Yelchin (named after Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov in the JJ Abrams movies).

If you need to catch up on "Star Trek: Discovery" so far, check out our Star Trek: Discovery streaming guide .

Back on the USS Discovery, Capt. Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew frantically try to figure a way out of the 10-C hyperfield so that they can give chase to Book's ship, which itself is trying to evade several guided torpedo-like "orbs" fired by 10-C in their own attempt to stop it. Meanwhile, General Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole) gives herself up for the role she played in disabling the Discovery's warp nacelle in last week's episode, enabling Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and Book (David Ajala) to escape and we lay the foundation for the final installment of the mushrooming "misunderstood" element of the primary plot.

Then something quite extraordinary happens. The first contact diplomatic team holds conference in Burnham's ready room and President T'Rina of Ni'var (Tara Rosling) suggests she try and contact species 10-C by way of a mind meld. My God, why did no one think of this before? And why didn't it even get mentioned in all of the first contact discussions that have been held, both on the Discovery and at Federation HQ..?! This could've potentially halved the time spent trying to establish communication.

She's successful in communicating with them, but is understandably shaken by the overwhelming experience. She is able to tell the first contact team what species 10-C is thinking, but no one feels the need to ask what she was able to convey to them …surely that could've been a considerable help. One of the nice and unexpected highlights of this season was the blossoming relationship between Saru (Doug Jones) and T'Rina and that continues to develop in this episode. Unfortunately, Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) is still hell bent on using the illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator to destroy the dark matter anomaly and he's now holding both Cmdr. Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) and Book (David Ajala) prisoner, but Book has found a sneaky way to escape though by fiddling with something he found on the floor.

They escape and the inevitable "let it go" de-escalation with Tarka begins, but their logic is less than perfect. Reno and Book convince Tarka that the people in the new galaxy/different dimension/alternative reality he calls Kayalise won't be exactly the same as they are here and that he has to let Oros go…but he's supposed to be already there, alive and well — or least he was, because he left the sign on the wall in the ruins of the Emerald prison camp. Maybe it's all meant to be metaphoric. Who knows.

Meanwhile, back on the Discovery, it's calculated that the ship can break free and give chase if they use the spore drive, but remain stationary, so that the stored-up energy could be directed at the orb allowing the ship to break free. The only downside is that it will burn out the spore drive leaving the Federation starship with only warp drive to travel the thousands of light years home.

Could this be a potential set up for the next season? Will they be successful, but be left stranded on the other side of the Milky Way as a consequence of saving all life as we know it? Will the story arc for Season 5 of "Star Trek: Discovery" involve the crew facing a decades-long, "Voyager"-style journey home..? No, none of those things.

To disable Book's ship and guarantee that Tarka won't release his isolytic weapon, Ndoye volunteers to fly a shuttle directly at Book's ship — which still doesn't have a name — and ram it. In the ensuing explosion, the Discovery tries to beam everyone out. The General makes it while Tarka makes the ultimate sacrifice and uses the last remaining power to beam Book out.

Tragically, the attempt to transport him off of his ship fails. Book's atoms! His pattern never truly quite materializes and he's unable to reform properly after having every component molecule in his body scrambled and sent from the bridge of his ship — which is exploding — to the bridge of the Discovery. Thus, he's probably conscious of being pulled apart at a sub-atomic level. It's the kind of thing that really puts a crimp in your day. And for the briefest of moments, you think perhaps "Discovery" has committed itself to at least one less-than-ideal outcome from this desperate mission. But then common sense kicks in and you already dread what's coming.

Back in sector 001, Earth and the Starfleet vessels assisting in the evacuation start to face the incoming debris as a result of the gravitational effects caused by the anomaly. It's not a climatic season finale space battle in the traditional sense, but more like a space fight against rocks. There's still plenty of action and explosions, sparks flying about, shaking sets and camera shots, so it's almost the same. Tilly and Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) bravely stay behind to coordinate as much of the effort as possible and form an unlikely, but entertaining relationship. Sadly though, the dialogue is clichéd and lets this story thread down.

The 10-C recognize much of the meaning of these recent events and the bridge crew of the Discovery is permitted to transport to the surface of their homeworld. President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) starts a dialogue with the 10-C and certainly doesn't waste any time. Thank heavens Kelpiens can type at 90 words per minute. The remainder of this third act plus the somewhat lengthy and drawn out, 14-minute long epilogue, is basically closure.

Then your earlier fear and dread are realized and the 10-C present Book to them. Book's a zombie! Yes, the 10-C intercepted the transporter pattern and stored it, you know, just in case it was important. The dark matter anomaly is shut down and for some reason, all the debris that was flying towards Earth stops, then flies back the other way. So, surely everyone is still in the firing line, just from the reverse direction?

Now for that issue about getting home. Well, the 10-C leave the DMA wormhole open just long enough for the USS Discovery to zip through and get home in time for tea and medals. The 10-C themselves are persuaded to drop the protective shielding that the boronite was fueling and face the universe without hiding behind something. Once home, everyone wraps up their affairs and Book — whose character has suffered the most from bad writing this season — accepts his punishment and says au revoir to Burnham. Ndoye on the other hand, appears to have gotten away without any serious repercussions.

It's really hard to fully understand — an insane effort is put into prop design, prop placement and continuity, set design, wardrobe, Easter eggs and so on; things that keep Jörg Hillebrand busy for months. So why then, for the love of Quality Science Fiction, is the story writing so shockingly weak? The cast mostly put in incredible performances and the actors have (one assumes) no significant influence on the story. So, they cannot be blamed in any way. It's the showrunner; that is where the buck ends.

And the current showrunner for "Discovery" likes to add layer after layer of emotional melodrama and frankly, it quickly gets too much.

Rating: 5/10

In other "Star Trek" news, Paul Wesley, perhaps best known for appearing in "The Vampire Diaries," has been cast to play young Captain Kirk in the second season of "Strange New Worlds."

"I am deeply humbled and still a little startled to have been given the honor of playing the inimitable James T Kirk," Wesley said in a tweet .

Quite how that's going to play out, no one is quite sure. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) was obviously in command of the USS Enterprise before James Kirk (William Shatner) and prior to the events of the epic two-part TOS episode "The Menagerie," the two had only met in passing, when Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain. It's possible that the publicity photo that was released with this story shows a young Kirk taking the Kobayashi Maru test…but, his uniform bears the rank of captain.

However, in "Star Trek" history, there aren't too many specifics for young Kirk before he took command of the USS Enterprise. That said, in 2259, six years before "The Original Series" — when "Strange New Worlds" is believed to be set — Kirk had only held the rank of Lieutenant for four years and while he was the youngest Starfleet officer to ever achieve the rank of captain, he assumed command of the Constitution-class USS Enterprise from Christopher Pike somewhere between 2262 and 2265.

Here's a brief timeline to help understand the relevant events.

  • Pike takes command of the USS Enterprise — 2250 ("Discovery" episode " Brother ")
  • Kirk enters Starfleet Academy — 2252 ("TOS" episodes " Shore Leave " and " The Apple ") 2251 (" The Autobiography of James T. Kirk")
  • Spock joins the USS Enterprise — 2254 ("Short Trek" episode " Q&A ")
  • Events of "TOS" episode " The Cage " take place —  2254
  • Kirk serves on the USS Republic as an ensign — 2254 (Autobiography)
  • Kirk graduates and serves as a lieutenant on the USS Farragut — 2255 ("TOS" episode " The Corbomite Maneuver ")
  • " Star Trek: Discovery" (S01, E01) " The Vulcan Hello " — 2256 , but there’s six month skip to next episode
  • "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 1 ends with " Will You Take My Hand " in 2257 , towards end of the year
  • "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 2 " Brother " starts either very late 2257 or early 2258
  • Pike gives up command of the USS Enterprise, according to Star Trek.com — 2262
  • Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise in either 2265 ("TOS" episode " The Menagerie, Part I ") or 2262 (Autobiography)
  • Montgomery Scott joins the ship — 2265 ("TOS" episode " Where No Man has Gone Before ")
  • Leonard McCoy joins the USS Enterprise —  2266
  • Pike suffers horrific injuries after an accident during a routine inspection — 2266 ("Discovery" episode " Through the Valley of Shadows ")
  • Events of "TOS" episode " The Menagerie " take place — 2267

Season 4 of "Star Trek: Discovery" is available to watch now on Paramount Plus in the US and CTV Sci-Fi or Crave TV in Canada. Countries outside of North America can watch on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. Season 2 of " Star Trek: Picard " is also currently airing and the premiere season of "Strange New Worlds" begins on May 5.

What the Star Trek Discovery Season 4 Finale Ending Means for Season 5

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 13 - Coming Home

This article contains Star Trek: Discovery spoilers.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 13

It’s been a long road. Because of a mid-season break, and a contemplative, slow-burn plot, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 probably seems a bit longer than it actually is. If any old school fans were worried Discovery couldn’t do a big-idea science fiction story without resorting to an action-adventure plot, the totality of season four proves those haters wrong. Fans will probably be split if this is the best season of Discovery , but, one thing’s for sure, from a tonal point of view, it was easily the most consistent. And, by the end of episode 13, “Coming Home,” the series seems to be confidently stepping into yet another new direction.

Here’s what happened at the end of the Star Trek: Discovery season 4 finale and what it might mean for season 5…

The DMA averted

After President T’Rina (Tara Rosling) does a big scary mind-meld with the alien species known as the Ten-C, it appears, at least, for a moment, that the united front of the Federation and their allies won’t be able to convince these aliens to stop the DMA from destroying Earth and Ni’Var. T’Rina’s mind meld attempt was noble however and totally references Spock doing similar large-scale mind-melds in the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode “One of Our Planets Is Missing,” and, of course, Star Trek: The Motion Picture . But, in the end, the crew has to communicate their intentions through the most classic model of Star Trek diplomacy; brutal honesty, and some actual apologies.

Ad – content continues below

In the end, the Ten-C narrowly shut off the massive Dark Matter Anamoly hurtling toward both Earth and Ni’Var, which saves everyone’s lives. On top of this Book also insists that the Ten-C not just scale back their massively destructive mining procedures, but also, shut it down entirely. This moment is a pretty clear statement about climate change and alternative energies, but in the Discovery version, the stakes are much broader. This season, we learned that the Ten-C were using the DMA to mine for boronite and were unaware this process caused destruction because they didn’t view any of the life in our galaxy as “higher lifeforms.” Burnham, Book, and the rest of the crew convince them otherwise, but shutting down the hugely destructive mining process was the bigger win.

Book’s punishment

Back in episode 7, “…But to Connect,” Book (David Ajala) disregarded the Federation’s vote to pursue diplomatic relations with the Ten-C, and instead, opted to join up with Tarka in trying to deliver an isolytic weapon to destroy the DMA and harness the power of the DMA controller. This put Book at odds with Burnham and the crew of the Discovery for pretty much the entire second half of the season. In the end, Book realizes Tarka has gone too far, and with a little help from Reno, prevents the rogue scientist from ruining any chance at diplomacy.

Book is also instrumental in getting the Ten-C to change their ways. However, when the smoke clears, he’s still broken a ton of Federation laws, regardless of how it shook out. At the very end, we learn what his punishment is: He’s tasked with helping refugees displaced by the DMA. This easily makes one wonder if David Ajala will still be a series regular in Discovery season 5. He’s no longer on the ship, so will he still be around?

The return of Tilly (But Where’s Gray?)

Although Tilly (Mary Wiseman) left the ship to teach at Starfleet Academy in “All Is Possible,” (episode 4 this season) she returns triumphantly in the finale to assist Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) with the excavation of Earth. To be clear, Tilly doesn’t rejoin the crew formally, either. Which, like Book, makes you wonder, is Mary Wiseman a regular in season 5, or a recurring guest star? Right now, Michelle Paradise, the showrunner for Discovery can’t reveal anything about the next season, but has gone on record saying that once characters enter the DISCO universe, “they’re always part of this world.”

This seems to indicate that the entire DISCO gang, no matter how spread out, can still reunite in some way shape or form. Obviously, this includes Gray (Ian Alexander) who left for Trill earlier in the season, but also means that  Lt. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.) and the mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) could be back in the mix for Season 5, too.

Earth and the United Federation of Planets

The biggest news of the Discovery season 4 comes at the very, very end. Here we learn that United Earth — previously separated from the Federation after the Burn — is now a full-fledged UFP member again. The President of Earth (played by real life politician Stacey Abrams) doesn’t even hesitate in rejoining the Federation. And, because Vance and Tilly reallocated Fed HQ to Earth’s orbit, it seems to indicate that Discovery season 5 could, at least partially, take place on the Earth of the 32nd Century.

In theory, this has been coming for awhile, and in the season 3 episode, “People of Earth,” the crew even visited the location of where Starfleet Academy used to be. But now, we’re all one big happy fleet again. The return of the Federation to Earth also means the return of Starfleet, which suddenly could make Discovery season 5 a show about something we’ve never quite seen before: A Star Trek series that actually digs into what Earth of the far future could be like.

Everything we know about Star Trek: Discovery Season 4

Here's what's next for Burnham and the gang.

Captain Michael Burnham in Discovery Season 4

After an epic and upbeat Season 3 , Star Trek: Discovery has lightly tapped the reset button again. Only this time, there's not a galaxy-wide mystery, the nostalgic appearance of a famous starship , or even a brand-new setting. After the Season 3 finale — "That Hope Is You Part 2," Season 4 of Discovery is poised to settle into the 32nd Century, and seemingly, get back to doing what Star Trek is famous for; a show about the crew of a space ship, having exciting adventures week after week.

Now that the crew of the USS Discovery has a new captain and a new (loosely defined) mission, what should DISCO fans expect for Season 4? The short answer is a lot .

The finale of Discovery Season 3 has opened up the series in a way that has never happened since it debuted in 2017. From the release date to the cast, to the directors and the writers, here's what to expect from Star Trek: Discovery Season 4. Let's fly!

When is the Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 release date?

Back on November 2, 2020, it was revealed that the cast and crew started filming Season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery . This means that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Discovery Season 4 began filming roughly nine months after Season 3 wrapped in February 2020. As of April 5, 2021, it was been confirmed that Discovery Season 4 will debut sometime in 2021, though it’s not clear exactly when. Right now because Lower Decks Season 2 is set to hit in August 2021, Fall 2021 seems right for Discovery Season 4.

Is there a trailer for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4?

Yes! As of April 5, 2021, Paramount+ revealed a short teaser trailer for Discovery Season 4 . It features new uniforms, a new mission for the USS Discovery , which seems centered on a large lightyear-spanning gravitational anomaly. Watch it above!

Who is writing Discovery Season 4?

Unlike previous seasons of Discovery , there appears to be little to no turnover within the creative team. As with Season 3, Michelle Paradise will be the showrunner for Season 4, with Alex Kurtzman serving as the executive producer. Much of the writing staff is thought to be the same, which will probably include Kirsten Beyer , Bo Yeon Kim, Erika Lippoldt, and Kalinda Vazquez , among other fan favorites.

Who is directing Discovery Season 4?

As with all previous seasons of Discovery , both Johnathan Frakes and Olatunde Osunsanmi are expected to return to direct episodes. Sadly, Picard and long-time Discovery director Hanelle Culpepper revealed in 2020 that she wouldn't be able to direct episodes of Discovery Season 4 due to scheduling conflicts, adding that she will "miss my Star Trek family." In addition to directing the first two episodes of Picard , Culpepper also directed the pivotal Discovery Season 3 episode, "Forget Me Not."

Who is in the Discovery Season 4 cast?

The vast majority of the Discovery Season 3 cast is expected to return for Season 4 including:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • David Ajala as Clevland Booker
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr. Culber
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Tilly
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Stamets
  • Ian Alexander as Gray Tal
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira Tal
  • Tig Notaro as Jett Reno
  • Oyin Oladejo as Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Keyla Detmer
  • Sara Mitich as Nilsson
  • Patrick Kwok-Choon as Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe Jr. as Ronald A. Bryce
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Vance (Unconfirmed)

The biggest cast member not returning is Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou. The character is getting her own Trek spinoff called Section 31 . Georgiou left Discovery via the Guardian of Forever in "Terra Firma Part 2," marking the second time Yeoh has "left" Discovery . Prime Universe Philippa Georgiou was killed by Klingons in the second episode of Discovery ever, "The Battle at the Binary Stars."

Also (probably) not returning is Noah Averbach-Katz, who played Ryn, since he got vaporized. (Then again, he could play a new character!) Finally, although she had top billing in the first half of the season, Rachael Ancheril's Commander Nhan departed the USS Discovery in "Die Trying." Nhan could technically return since she's still working for the Federation but in an interview in 2020 , Ancheril made it seem like Nhan probably was on that seed ship for good.

The Season 4 teaser trailer also revealed a new Cardaissan-esque character (unnamed), as well as the return of Vulcan/Ni’Var President T’Rina played by Tara Rosling. Also, it looks like Sonja Sohn will once again return as Gabrielle Burnham, Michael Burnham’s mother.

What is the plot of Discovery Season 4?

Unlike Season 2, Discovery Season 3 didn't end on a huge cliffhanger. For the first time, the plot and tone of a new Discovery season is pretty open-ended. The ship has a new (yet familiar) captain, the crew has spiffy new uniforms, the Federation is on the rebound, and Starfleet is back to helping people out whenever possible. When Burnham asks Tilly "What's the latest?" the implication is basically that the next Season 4 could go back to a planet-of-the-week format, similar to TOS, TNG, Voyager, or Enterprise . In fact, showrunner Michelle Paradise said that because Season 3 was loosely more episodic than Season 4, fans should expect the trend to continue into Season 4.

In terms of character arcs, we'll certainly need to get a sense of what Saru is doing on Kaminar, and if he'll ever return to the Federation. Further, the idea that Gray can finally be seen through holographic tech is something Paradise has said will "pay off" in Season 4.

A few fairly big plot points still need to be resolved in Season 4, the most intriguing of which are the connections between Discovery and the 2018 Short Treks episode "Calypso" — in which a totally vacant USS Discovery is being maintained by a fully sentient computer in an even more distant future.

Paradise explained it to Inverse like this:

""Calypso' has now become part of our canon. And it takes place far beyond our time now even, in Season 3. And yeah, eventually we'll have to find our way there. So that short, in the grand scheme of things, fits together as a piece. In certainly in Season 3, we were beginning that process with Zora — who isn't quite the Zora we saw in 'Calypso' — but we were getting that process started a little bit of her sparking to life in episode 4, and then coming in and having a bit more of a presence in 12 and 13. So, we're starting our way there."

The first teaser trailer revealed that some of Season 4 will be focused on the crew figuring out a large “gravitational anomaly,” which will require the Federation to unite with non-Federation worlds. This will include at least one trip to Ni’Var (Vulcan) and it appears that both Tilly and Burnham will get those awesome Romulan swords, first introduced by the Qowat Milat in Picard Season 1. Does this mean Tilly will practice the way of “absolute candor” and constantly tell the truth no matter what? Basically, she kind of already does, right?

Interview: Doug Jones On More Action And Romance For Saru In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5

star trek discovery season 4 episode 13 trailer

| March 18, 2024 | By: Joe Andosca 27 comments so far

Doug Jones’ Saru has been a standout character on Star Trek: Discovery since the series debuted. His unique ability to perform with prosthetic makeup has brought depth to the franchise’s first Kelpien character. TrekMovie had a chance to speak to Jones about what’s new for Saru in the fifth and final season and how he feels about saying goodbye.

We can see that Saru gets into more action in season 5. Was this a new challenge, especially with all the makeup, or was this your stunt guy’s problem to solve?

My stunt guy, I want to give him full credit for all that he did for me over all the five seasons as well as Shape of Water and What We Do in the Shadows . He has been my guy in Toronto. When you find a tall, skinny stunt actor who can take a hit and live through it, you keep him and [ Bauston Camilleri ] saved my life. So, he did the lion’s share of outdoors, uneven terrain, running—that was him. But I still have to do an awful lot out in the forest as well. And when you’re wearing heavy makeup with prosthetics, it is what it is, no matter what environment you’re in. It doesn’t even need to be treacherous terrain. Just even trying to walk, it’s hard enough on a flat floor, let alone in a forest.

star trek discovery season 4 episode 13 trailer

Saru gets into the action in the Discovery season 5 trailer

We can also see that this season will also be emotional for Saru. You are conveying a lot of feelings, so were there any changes in the makeup that allow for more facial expression?

Not necessarily, except that the silicone material that my prosthetics are made out of, I found out they accidentally ran it softer than usual one time. And I said, “Oh my gosh, this is so much better.” They can run it hard like a truck tire or they can run it soft like a breast implant. They can run the whole range. So the softer, more pliable version, I asked them to keep it that way from now on. We didn’t discover that until season 5 [laughs]. So, better late than never. It does move better now. It does express better.

Is there anything else in the new season that is a big leap for you—new territory as a character, as an actor?

Well, the growing romance. It’s rare to be in a nonhuman character, in wacky makeup, and have a romance story as well. It’s happened a couple of times, The Shape of Water being one of them. But also this. Having a love interest with President T’Rina, my lovely Vulcan lady friend. And it was a very dignified and subtle relationship that now in season 5 builds to a lovely crescendo.

Other than the cast and crew members, what do you miss most about Discovery ?

Saru has become like a dear friend to me. We know each other so well. He has affected me. I’ve affected him. It’s hard to talk about him in the third person when I’m the guy playing him, but I kind of feel that way. And I’ve learned some life lessons from him about fear, and anxiety, getting over it and through it successfully. Yeah, I’ll miss that.

Can we expect to see Saru in the future, perhaps on the Starfleet Academy show?

I would say: Never say never. I’m open to it, but I’ve heard nothing so far. No one’s called me yet.

Yes, action and romance. What we watch Star Trek for.

Two of the many reasons I’ve enjoyed the franchise, yes. And, like every last one of those reasons, it’s all in the execution.

I remember this show from the sixties with William Shatner, action and romance. There were even fist fights!

I mean, those are pretty engrained elements of all the shows and movies…

Agreed — those are two that are part of the overall set of good reasons to watch Star Trek.

Not a fan of the following???

“The City on the Edge of Forever” “This Side of Paradise” “Amok Time” “For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky” “All Our Yesterdays” “Captain’s Holiday” “Half a Life” “Tapestry” “Lessons” “Second Chances” “Rejoined” “Crossfire” “Looking for par’Mach in All the Wrong Places” “Children of Time” “You Are Cordially Invited” “Change of Heart” “Resolutions” “Blood Fever” “Day of Honor” “Home” “Demons”/”Terra Prime”

Those are some of the most acclaimed episodes of the pre-Discovery era.

You could argue The Inner Light certainly has it as well.

I don’t know that Blood Fever and Day of Honor are terribly acclaimed. Now, Someone to Watch Over Me on the other hand…

Also, Counterpoint wasn’t all about romance, but it struck me as the best take on one for Janeway. She was so invested in the idea of making that connection, hoping against hope it would pan out but taking precautions in case it didn’t. Such an underrated episode.

With all due respect to His Way, it’s amazing to me that Voyager of all shows delivered Trek’s most winning stab at a rom com though – probably the hardest genre to pull off. Seven trying to date but the Doctor falling for her was beautifully handled for one shining episode.

hilarious… you all complain about action and romance and that’s not star trek… you complain that it’s slow and emotional… that’s not star trek… i remember back in the day how ds9 nother action romance slow and emotional series led by an african american was not star trek and that rodenberry was spinning in his grave at the travesty ds9 was.

Despite the many ups and severe DOWNS of Discovery, IMHO the one positive constant has been Doug Jones’ portrayal of Saru. I will definitely miss the character and hopefully Jones continues to show up at events so we can get updates on how he is doing. LLAP Mr. Jones!

I do think he’s the best brand new live action character we’ve had since 2017, and by quite a bit.

I suppose Pike kinda counts as he’s gotten a pretty notable revamp, but Saru is an entirely original *very* alien creation brought to life by a uniquely gifted and committed character actor.

Though the way he waves his hands behind him as he walks does sometimes make me think Saru is cropdusting everywhere he goes…

Agreed as usual. He was one of the big break out stars from the beginning and always liked seeing him even if the show itself has been rocky.

Given the time period it’s pretty limited of we’ll ever see the character again much outside of Academy.

Saru is my Disco fave!

I totally agree. I haven’t been wild about Discovery, but I adore Saru. Doug Jones is a treasure, and we’re SO lucky to have him for Star Trek.

Action And,Romance Two elements part of Star Trek,FROM THE START!

Agreed — those are two with the overall set of good reasons to watch Star Trek.

This man always gives 110 percent to this show. A pity it didn’t give 110 percent back to him.

That’s because Kurtzman had to lecture him on math:

“Doug, 100% by definition is the maximum you can give us and that we can give back. It unfortunately sounds like you learned math from that Benjamin Stock dude — he is not accredited and is a mathematically confused individual”

Regardless how you feel about the show itself (and it’s my least favorite personally) you can’t say the actors didn’t give it their all. They always showed up very committed, Jones especially.

Saru is my favorite character on DSC, him and Stamets are the only characters I was able to connect with….all the other characters were written to broadly and their scenes feel forced

I totally agree. I think some of that (both the good and the bad) is due to the performances, too (since the writing is usually so thin).

I originally truly disliked Staments but he grew on me by third season.

People are nuts to critique anything we can steal from Shape of Water for Saru’s character arc. Kirk, Spock, Picard, Riker, Data, Sisko, and Kira all had interesting romantic moments. And in theory (I don’t know how old Saru is), T’Rina is age-appropriate!

Always liked Saru and curious what how well his storyline will go this season.

It’s just too bad they didn’t put him in a better show. But he gave it his all.

‘It’s just too bad they didn’t put him in a better show. But he gave it his all.’ They couldn’t put him on a better show since Discovery is still the best of the modern shows.

I’ve got lots of complaints about Discovery, but Saru was one of the few good things to come out of the show. SNW is one of the others. IMHO those may be the only ones.

A great person. I remember the first year the DSC crew was at STLV. It was the end of the day, and Doug was packing up to leave as the activities were over for the first day. He was headed out, and he was great to me when I said hello to him. (I’m a vendor.) I was telling him how good it was to have Star Trek back on TV. He later came to the restaurant we were in at the hotel. He came in, alone, looking for a seat. There weren’t any. He recognized me and I waved him over to our table. He sat down and had dinner with us. Most of the conversation was about his recent movie.

No matter how often we journey where no one has gone before, it never gets old. With the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise set to come to a close this year, fans are waiting to see how the crew of the Discovery make it back to their own time. The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery begins in just a few weeks.

Star Trek: Discovery carries on the fine tradition within the franchise of recklessly traveling through time. Its first two seasons took place ten years before Star Trek: The Original Series while the last two saw the crew travel 900 years into the future. Star Trek: Discovery season five debuts on April 4, 2024 with the crew still in the 31st Century. The fifth season will have 10 episodes, which makes it the shortest season of Star Trek: Discovery to date.

There has been almost two years since the fourth season aired and the delay has been due to Paramount deciding that this season would be the show’s last. Additional filming took place after the series was meant to have wrapped to allow the cast and crew to give the show a sense of closure. Whether that means that the Discovery will make it back to their own time remains to be seen, but at least it shouldn’t be ending on an obvious cliffhanger.

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season five will debut on Paramount+ on April 4, 2024. New episodes will follow weekly.
