Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

The 1,600-foot pier comes with a little amusement park featuring a roller coaster so you can get a bird’s-eye view of the beach below before taking a short, belly-flipping drop back down. 1. San Francisco

Best city for variety, iconic sights and LGBTIQ+ travel

Pushing boundaries with trendsetting food, social movements, art and technology, San Francisco  is as far out as you can get without winding up in the Pacific.

The roots of these giants may be shallow, but they hold each other up and reach dizzying heights, some surviving since the days of the Roman Empire. Even a short stroll on the soft forest floor beneath them puts the rest of the world into perspective.

Redwoods thrive along the coast from Big Sur north to the Oregon border, and you'll find massive stands of old-growth groves at Redwood Nationaal Park . As winemaking in neighboring  Napa Valley grows ever more upscale, sun-dappled vineyards in Sonoma County are still surrounded by pastoral ranchlands. Wineries range from the Sonoma Valley to the coastal Russian River Valley , and tasting rooms abound in buzzy Healdsburg .

The uniqueness of the terroir is valued in this down-to-earth wine country, where you taste vintages straight from the barrel inside a tin-roofed shed while playing with the winemaker’s pet dog (at Porter Creek , just one of many excellent wineries). In addition to wine tasting, wallow in volcanic bubbling mud in Calistoga or float the river around LGBTIQ-friendly Guerneville.

4. Highway 1

Best region for road tripping, ocean views and couples

Though in southern California it's known by its more famous name, the  Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), northern Californians have a more succinct label for the 400-mile stretch from San Francisco to Crescent City: Hwy 1. The edges of the highway hug the coast and cradle small communities as it alternates between hairpin switchbacks and straight stretches through the bucolic countryside. 

Start on the PCH at Santa Monica  and cruise north through Malibu , Big Sur, Monterey Bay, and San Francisco and up along Sonoma Coast State Park. In Fort Bragg, stop and admire the "glass beach" and check out its artistic community. 

5. Yosemite National Park

Best region for waterfalls, outdoors and family trips

Feeling so small has never felt this grand. Everything is monumental at Yosemite National Park : thunderous waterfalls tumble over sheer cliffs, granite domes tower overhead and the world's biggest trees cluster in mighty groves of giant sequoias.

Bask in the undulating stainless steel curves of  Walt Disney Concert Hall , commune with world-beating contemporary art at the  Broad or check out modern music history at the  Grammy Museum .

7. Monterey Bay

Head north to quirky Santa Cruz , stopping off on broad stretches of cream-colored beach to spot gray whales, sea otters, sea lions and seals. Indulge in some playtime on the beach boardwalk with its historic roller coaster and watch surfers shred at Steamer Lane.

8. Death Valley National Park

Its daunting name of brings to mind Wild West ghost towns, broken-down pioneer wagon trains and tumbleweed blowing past skulls on desert sand dunes, but Death Valley is actually full of life. 

Spring wildflowers daub the dunes with a painter’s palette of colors, adrenaline-seekers zoom across crackled salt flats, and shy desert wildlife lives by starlight. California is one of the most diverse and exciting places in the United States. With its stunning coastline, world-class cities, incredible natural parks, and vibrant cultural scene, it’s no wonder that California is a must-visit on many traveler’s lists.

If you’re planning your first trip to California, there are a few things you should learn first, so you can have an amazing time without having to learn these lessons DURING your trip.

Since this is such a large and diverse state, you’re going to need to be armed with the best travel tips that will help you get around safely and easily, without mishaps. Here are 15 California travel tips to help you make the most of your adventure.

California Travel Tips

Don’t try to do everything.

California is a huge state and there is so much to see and do. If you’ve started planning a trip, you already know this. The distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles is 6 hours of driving, without traffic, and without stops.

If you’re thinking you can see it all, you’re going to be disappointed when Google tells you otherwise. My best tip for new visitors to California is “ don’t try to do everything “.

I know that seems like common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people try to plan a crazy trip that leaves them dissatisfied with the experience – and maybe even blaming California for it. I mean, that traffic!

Instead of rushing, pick a few key places you really want to visit and take the time to enjoy them. Road trips in California are usually designed so you can see a lot of things between 2 major cities. Here are a few of ours you might enjoy.

Plan According to the Season

California is vast and its weather can vary significantly from region to region. Coastal areas tend to have moderate temperatures year-round, while inland regions can experience scorching summers and cold winters.

Research the areas you plan to visit, including what the weather is both day and night. You might want to change your plans depending on the heat in a particular location. For instance, it can be quite cold in Joshua Tree in the winter, but it gets up to 100 degrees F during the summer. Maybe you want to go there during the shoulder season instead of July.

If you’re visiting Disneyland , remember that there are school holidays that make visiting there not so fun. Be sure to check school calendars and their own events calendar to know what you’re getting into.

Some areas in Northern California get a lot of snow during the winter and the season starts earlier and goes later than you might think. Be sure to check whether it’s likely your destination will have snow when you visit so you can plan accordingly.

Rent a Car or RV

Public transportation can be limited, especially outside of major cities. If you plan on exploring multiple areas, you’ll need to rent a car for the most flexibility. Even inside of major cities, like Los Angeles and San Diego, the public transportation options are slim. You won’t necessarily be able to get around on foot or even by bus.

If you’re not sure, try to plan your city itinerary with public transportation options only, then you can add in a car for the days you think you might need to leave the city, or to see other areas further outside the city.

Since it costs quite a bit to park at hotels in the city, you might want to build your itinerary so that you will have a few car-free days in the city first, then rent a car for the day trips you might take later on.

We also recommend renting an RV if you’re planning to do California on a budget and stop at RV parks and campgrounds along your route.

Visit the National Parks

California is home to several national parks , including Yosemite , Sequoia, and Joshua Tree . Each park offers unique landscapes and activities, so try to visit at least one during your trip.

• National parks attract a huge number of visitors, so it’s best to arrive early so you can take in the scenery before the park fills with people and/or the parking lot fills up.
• If you plan to camp you should always book in advance. Few parks can accommodate last-minute bookings as they are already full.
• If you’re planning to visit a lot of California State Parks, you can save money by getting a  California State Parks Pass  in advance. Most parks charge $8-10 a day for parking. If you plan to visit many parks, it might be more economical to buy the pass for $125.

Respect the Environment

California is known for its commitment to sustainability. As a tourist, it’s your responsibility to maintain that standard where ever you’re visiting. You also need to be aware of any issues that a place may have and do your best to observe best practices.

In California that means you need to do your part to minimize water usage. There has been a drought in California for many years and even with recent rainfall levels, there is still a chance that drought continues. Residents are often under a water usage restriction, so you should be also.

Another important thing to remember when you’re hiking in California is to stay on marked trails and always leave with anything you brought. Leaving trash on the trail isn’t responsible or respectful. Trampling the wildflowers is also not respectful.

Try Local Cuisine

California is a food lover’s paradise, thanks to its diverse cultures and rich agricultural resources, from fresh seafood in coastal towns to Mexican food in Southern California and farm-to-table dishes in wine country. Here are some of the best places to visit and their local dishes:

• Los Angeles : Known for its multicultural food scene. Visit food trucks for authentic tacos and try Korean BBQ in K-town. Don’t miss out on the city’s famous sushi restaurants, and do try the French dip sandwich, a local classic.
• San Francisco : Known for its fresh seafood and unique fusion cuisine. Enjoy Dungeness crab, clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and the iconic Mission-style burrito.
• Napa Valley : This area is renowned for its gourmet food scene to match its world-class wines. Dine on farm-to-table cuisine, artisanal cheeses, and locally sourced dishes.
• San Diego : Famous for its Mexican-inspired cuisine. Try the local fish tacos, carne asada fries, and California burritos.
• Santa Barbara : Known for its fresh seafood. Enjoy local spiny lobster, sea urchin (“uni”), and Santa Maria-style BBQ, a local style of barbecue featuring tri-tip steak.
• Sacramento : Known as America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, Sacramento’s local cuisine is all about fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Explore the Cities

As you know, California has many big cities that are actually some of the best cities to visit in the United States. I would recommend that you don’t just stick to one city during your visit. Each has its own vibe and attractions that make it unique and interesting.

San Francisco has its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, Los Angeles is known for Hollywood and its beaches, while San Diego is famous for its beautiful harbor and world-class zoo.

Book Accommodation in Advance

California is a popular tourist destination and accommodations can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. While it might seem attractive to just arrive with a road trip plan and wing it as far as where you’ll stay each night, it’s not a great idea.

I get the appeal of wanting to stay flexible and just stop for the night when you feel like it, but that can lead you to have no place to stay in some areas. It’s better to build a rough daily plan for yourself and at least book the accommodations you need in each area.

Don’t Miss the Coastal Drive

Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, offers one of the most scenic drives in the world. It hugs the coastline all the way up the state, with views you won’t believe until you see it for yourself.

If you ask me, this is one of the best road trips you can take anywhere in the United States. If you are looking for a great way to see California and haven’t settled on anything yet, I’d recommend this Highway 1 road trip website.

Plan for a slow drive, with plenty of stops to admire the views. If you can swing it, plan for 1-2 full weeks to really discover the best of the best along this route.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Traveling in sunny California requires some preparation to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Here are some tips:

• Sunscreen : Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously to all exposed skin and remember to reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.
• Clothing : Wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when possible to protect your skin. Clothes with a tight weave are better at blocking UV rays.
• Hats and Sunglasses : A wide-brimmed hat can protect your face, ears, and neck. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays can protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them.
• Shade : Seek shade when the sun’s rays are the strongest, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. However, remember that you can still get sunburned in the shade or on a cloudy day due to UV reflection.
• Hydrate : The sun and heat can dehydrate you quickly, especially when you’re active. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to stay hydrated.
• Check the UV Index : The UV Index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways that prevent overexposure to the sun.

Take Advantage of Free Activities

There are many free things to do in California. Enjoy a stroll on the beaches, visit free museums, or explore the many vibrant neighborhoods.

Prepare for Earthquakes

Earthquakes are a part of life in California. They’re usually small. In fact, I’ve lived here for a while and I still haven’t felt one in person. But that doesn’t mean the big one won’t happen while you’re visiting. It’s important to familiarize yourself with safety procedures, in case it does.

• Familiarize yourself with the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” protocol. If you feel shaking, drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck (and as much of your body as you can) under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall, and hold on until the shaking stops.
• Know the safe spots in each room (under sturdy furniture, against inside walls) and danger zones (near windows, mirrors, or heavy furniture that could fall).
• Know the emergency procedures at your hotel or the place you’re staying. Identify safe places to meet outside, and establish a way to contact family or friends to let them know you’re safe.
• Consider having an emergency kit with you that includes items such as bottled water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, a multi-tool, a portable charger for your phone, and any essential medication.
• There are several apps that provide real-time alerts about earthquakes, which can give you a few extra seconds to get to a safe spot.
• Before your trip, learn about earthquakes and what to do in the event of one. The more you know, the better you can react in a real situation.

Enjoy Local Wine

California is one of the top wine-producing regions in the world. There are so many of them that it would take quite a while to travel to them all. I know, we’ve tried.

Take the time to visit a winery, tour the vineyards, and of course, taste some wine. Wine tasting, though it can be expensive, is a time honored pastime in California. When the sun is out and the vineyard is full of ripe grapes, there’s just nothing better.

Don’t Skip the Hike

California is nothing if not an outdoor paradise. The weather is great almost year round in many spots, particularly Southern California. Because of this, and the incredibly varied terrain, there are numerous options for hiking, no matter where you are.

We always recommend building a few hikes into your itinerary, even if you’re in the city. Did you know there are lots of hikes within a short distance of Los Angeles? You can go hiking in Yosemite or Joshua Tree , you can go hiking near San Diego , or near Santa Barbara . There are dozens of possibilities.

Enjoy the Beaches

California’s beaches are world-famous, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy them. Here are some tips:

• Choose the Right Beach : California’s coastline stretches over 800 miles, and every beach has its own charm. Do some research to find a beach that fits your interests – whether that’s surfing, wildlife spotting, family activities, or simply relaxing.
• Safety First : Always pay attention to posted beach safety signs and flags. Watch out for rip currents and only swim in designated areas when lifeguards are present.
• Sun Protection : The sun can be intense on the beach. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapply regularly, and don’t forget your sunglasses and hat.
• Pack a Picnic : Many of California’s beaches have picnic areas where you can enjoy a meal with a view. Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated.
• Explore Beyond the Sand : Many beaches are near hiking trails, parks, or towns with shops and restaurants. Consider renting a bike to explore the area or check out local wildlife on a nature trail.
• Leave No Trace : Help keep California’s beaches beautiful by packing out all trash and belongings at the end of the day.
• Plan for Weather : Even in sunny California, beach weather can change quickly. Check the forecast and be prepared with layers.

Sunny California, speckled with beaches, awash in great weather, brimming with cultural diversity, and well known for many of its sights, such as Hollywood, Disneyland and Sequoia National Park, is one of the top tourist destinations in the United States. Located on the West Coast of America, it is the country’s most populated state.

California is a state with a great diversity of geography and is, by land area, the third largest state in the U.S. On California’s Pacific coast, there is a rich selection of beaches to choose from, both sandy and rocky. Further inland lies the Sierra Nevada, holding its proud claim to Lake Tahoe and, of course, Mount Whitney, which is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. Desert areas such as Death Valley and the Mojave Desert are all to be found with California, as well the wonderful Sequoia forests, with their towering trees. A visitor to the state could spend a lifetime here and still not discover all it has to offer; indeed, I’m sure most of its natives haven’t even discovered half of it.

The climate of California is but one reason to visit the state, albeit a very persuasive one. Most parts of California experience a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool winters, with the California Current often creating fog near the coastal areas. Generally, the further inland you go, the more extreme the weather can be; with hotter summers and colder winters. In Death Valley, temperatures can reach 130 °F (54 °C) in the summer and dip to 15 °F (-9 °C) in the winter. Naturally, with a trip up to the Sierra Nevada one can easily find snow and truly arctic temperatures. So, California really has it all in terms of weather, with a large degree of diversity within the State boundary.

For budding biologists or friends of nature, a wide variety of flora and fauna can be found in California. To start with, the largest, tallest and oldest trees in the world all live within the State. Head to Redwood National Park to see the tallest tree, ‘Hyperion’ and to Sequoia National Park to see the largest tree, ‘General Sherman’. In terms of fauna, the following stunning species can be spotted with a sharp eye; California Sea Lion, American Black Bear, Coyote, California Quail (the official state bird), California Condor, Bald Eagle, Mountain Lion, Southern California Kit Fox and many more magnificent creatures.

My first view of Monterey Bay on California’s Central Coast was thrilling — a raft of 40-something sea otters — and free. The next time I would get close to them, at the Monterey Bay Aquarium , it cost nearly $60. That split between free access to outdoor wonders and investment-grade attractions epitomized my experience in the area.

Like so much of coastal California, the Monterey Peninsula, home to famous Pebble Beach golf courses and exclusive towns like Carmel-by-the-Sea (known simply as Carmel), connotes wealth. It is encompassed by Monterey County, a roughly 3,300-square-mile area, which includes Big Sur, where accommodations at luxury resorts like the Post Ranch Inn start at around $1,500 a night.

With a budget of less than half of that for three days, I put Monterey — the town and the county — to the frugal test. In January, a quiet and thrifty time of year, I trusted parks and preserves, unsung hotels and small businesses to keep things economical, even if sampling the variety of Monterey — ranging from historic cities to redwood forests, tide pools and vineyards — required renting a car ($175).

Seeking Steinbeck

My introduction to Monterey, John Steinbeck’s 1945 classic novel “Cannery Row,” describes its waterfront lined in sardine canneries as “a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.” It’s hard to find that gritty romance along today’s Cannery Row , which boomed in the 1930s and ’40s, before overfishing killed supply.

Now chains such as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Sunglass Hut replace “weedy lots and junk heaps,” though a central plaza with bronze sculptures of Steinbeck and some of his characters pays tribute to the past.

Still, the spirit of the book’s protagonist, Doc — a marine biologist based on the real-life scientist Ed Ricketts — lives on at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is housed in the former Hovden Cannery. At $59.95 for admission, the aquarium is a worthy splurge, offering opportunities to encounter creatures large, small, wondrous and rare.

“We bring the ocean to people to inspire them with things they might not get to see otherwise,” said Madi Frazier, an aquarium naturalist, as she guided me to a kelp forest modeled on the one found just beyond the bayfront building’s glass walls.

A wing devoted to deepwater ecology held bright red bloody-belly comb jellyfish, stringy bioluminescent siphonophores and four-foot-high Japanese spider crabs that inched along in the gloom. A dune-style aviary offered opportunities to observe a normally skittish red knot at close range. Bat rays glided beneath tentative fingers in shallow touch tanks.

A few blocks away, Katie Blandin named her five-year-old cocktail bar Pearl Hour after “the hour of the pearl,” described in “Cannery Row” as “the interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself.”

We met during happy hour — 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday — when classic cocktails such as the Corpse Reviver No. 2 go for $10 (normally $13). Ms. Blandin plants the bar’s back patio in succulents, flowers and herbs, many of which make their way into her cocktails.

“I think even a cocktail should have a sense of terroir,” she said.

Old Monterey

The oldest part of Monterey — an outpost of Spain and then Mexico dating back to the 17th century — lies just over a mile south of Cannery Row in a pedestrian-friendly downtown where signs flag historic adobe buildings.

Among several modestly priced hotels there, I booked the Hotel Abrego , where my $130-a-night room included a Keurig coffee machine and spacious glassed-in shower. Its $20 nightly resort fee, included in the room total, covered parking, a hot breakfast buffet and a glass of wine.

It was easy walking distance to lively Alvarado Street, lined in restaurants and shops. A 19th-century complex, the Cooper Molera Adobe , includes an orchard, barn and house museum (free) behind its walls, and the Alta Bakery and Cafe , where I sipped coffee ($3) on the tranquil patio.

Down the block, Ad Astra Bread Co . sells aromatic loaves of sourdough ($10 each) from Ron Mendoza, the former pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Aubergine in nearby Carmel.

“For the last five years, some of our leading chefs have abandoned fine dining and opened artisanal food businesses,” said Deborah Luhrman, the editor and publisher of the food magazine Edible Monterey Bay , who recommended both bakeries.

The brewpub Alvarado Street Brewery was buzzing when I stopped in for a quinoa bowl ($16) and a Mai Tai tropical I.P.A. for $8. Nearby, my favorite cheap find, El Charrito Express , served substantial barbacoa wraps stuffed with marinated beef, beans and rice for $6.99.

Chancing it in Carmel

From the outset, it felt like a losing bet to take my penny-pinching budget to chic Carmel-by-the-Sea, the one-square-mile seaside town where the actor Clint Eastwood was once mayor.

Even getting there comes at a price: 17-Mile Drive , the coastal scenic route, costs $12 to drive. Fortunately, it’s free to cyclists, which helped take the edge off the cost of the bike I rented to explore some of Monterey’s celebrated cycling routes .

From the bike shop Mad Dogs & Englishmen in Monterey, I rented an electric bike ($40 for four hours) to assist in the long ride — about 28 miles round-trip — and its hills. The deal included free valet parking for my car at the adjacent Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

On a cool January morning, frothy aquamarine waves broke on the granite rocks that barricaded the coast, tempting me to stop every half mile or so to admire their churn. A thick fog blew in as I reached the area’s renowned shorefront links, dramatizing their sand bunkers and wind-shorn cypress trees. I passed a landscape painter and jaw-dropping Pebble Beach mansions before coasting into Carmel.

Amid luxury retailers like Tiffany and Bottega Veneta I found the new Korean restaurant Jeju Kitchen in the outdoor Carmel Plaza . My salmon rice bowl was not cheap at $26, but it was delicious, substantial and only a few dollars more than food truck options at the Carmel Farmers Market across the street.

Monarchs, redwoods and waterfalls

It was far easier to stretch my budget seeking nature in Monterey, home to 99 miles of coastline.

I started at the 2.4-acre Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary , where mature Monterey pine trees attract overwintering butterflies that are known to cluster in groups of up to 1,000 from November through February (free).

Using binoculars, I spied bright orange monarchs catching early-morning rays from the tips of pine boughs like mini-solar panels. A pair of deer grazed in the shade below while a set of acorn woodpeckers chattered in the treetops. The abundant bird life drew the attention of two red-shouldered hawks, which glided in silently.

Continuing south along the coast, I spent a sunny afternoon at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (admission $10). The craggy headland has been the setting for classic Hollywood films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca,” and attracted the photographers Edward Weston and Ansel Adams .

The reserve, which has a special conservation status within the state park system, was created by a land donation to protect its cypress grove, according to Kathleen Lee, the executive director of the nonprofit Point Lobos Foundation , which supports the park with fund-raising and docent training. In a phone interview, she directed me to the forest, noting that it is “one of only two native Monterey cypress groves remaining in California.”

Atop vertiginous cliffs, a trail wound bravely through the wind-sculpted trees. Below them, harbor seals appeared in the backwash of coves. A short drive south, I scrambled over wet rocks at Weston Beach — named for the photographer — to find tide pools filled with sea stars, anemones and hermit crabs.

Waning light chased me from the park as I set out south, eager to make the drive down famously curvy Highway 1 in Big Sur before dark. The rugged coast of towering redwoods and mountains that plunge into the ocean was named El Sur Grande , or the Big South, by Mexican colonizers as an unmapped wilderness.

Twenty-two miles south of Point Lobos, Ripplewood Resort got its start when the highway was being built in the 1920s. I booked a rustic but comfortable cabin there for $135 a night and woke to find it ideally located just a few miles north of Big Sur Bakery , a beacon of artisanal baking that seemed impossible in such a remote location (a Cheddar-and-chive scone cost $5.50).

Ripplewood also lies close to a series of coastal parks, including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park , where the four-mile Buzzard’s Roost Trail ascended amid redwoods to ridge-top ocean views (admission, $10, good at all state parks for the day). Nine more wiggly miles south, McWay Falls cascades onto a pristine beach at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park . Between them, I stopped at frequent turnouts to scan for migrating gray whales exhaling telltale spouts.

A safari and a tasting

The survival of southern sea otters in California is a comeback story. Hunted nearly to extinction for their thick pelts, sea otters managed to hang on in the most remote coves and crags of Big Sur, where a few individuals were discovered in 1938. Now numbering about 3,000, the endangered marine mammals are some of the most charismatic residents in the Central Coast’s kelp beds.

They also thrive in Elkhorn Slough , a coastal wetland preserve in Moss Landing, about 27 miles north of Monterey. There, I boarded an electric catamaran from Monterey Bay Eco Tours to troll the calm waters on a 90-minute cruise ($45).

Within minutes, we spotted harbor seals hauled out on muddy banks shared by marbled godwits, black-necked stilts and whimbrel, some of the park’s more than 300 species of birds. Mother otters fed their babies sea cucumbers, gave them swimming lessons and carried sleeping pups as they floated on their backs.

“Elkhorn Slough is a low-stress environment for them,” said Cindy Rice, a naturalist guide leading the tour.

The drive to my last stop — Monterey’s vineyards — took me through the agricultural flats surrounding Salinas, which grows 70 percent of the nation’s salad greens, some 20 miles to the Salinas Valley , which nurtures pinot noir and chardonnay grapes in the foothills of the Santa Lucia range.

Attracted by vintage tractors, I turned into the family-owned Rustiqué Wines and found its convivial tasting room lodged in a former dairy barn filled not with hushed aficionados swirling and evaluating wine, but with a sociable crowd enjoying glasses of estate pinot noir and oaked chardonnay in the spirit of happy hours everywhere.

The winemaker Chad Silacci and two other family members worked the bar and the crowd. The winery, established in 2006, has built a following through concerts, events and warm hospitality (tastings cost $20, waived with a two-bottle purchase).

“We want it to be comfortable,” Mr. Silacci said, indicating the tasting room’s sofas and chairs arrayed around a wood-burning stove. “It’s kind of like walking into our family’s living room.”

I finished an earthy pinot, thinking the investment, like so many in Monterey, paid unanticipated returns.

Depending on where you are in the country, a weekend trip might be feasible, and if you’re coming from the East Coast, you might want to allow for a little more time to adjust to the time change.

According to Lindsay Myers , travel expert, TV host, and travel planning professional, there are a few stand-out cities in the Golden State. First off, the Big Sur/ Carmel by the Sea area is a must-see. “Carmel by the sea (south of San Francisco) is a small sleepy gem of a town,” says Myers. There are “lots of boutique hotels, B&Bs, and amazing ocean views. Think cozy fireplaces and romantic walk,” she adds.

Another great feature of California is for the wine lovers. There are so many wineries and vineyards outside of Napa and Sonoma. “Paso Robles has 200 wineries and is only 30 miles from the coast,” says Myers. “You can taste wine all day and enjoy the sunset at night.” Temecula is also a popular location for wine tasting, as it boasts incredible views of the valley, and plenty of wineries to choose from in Lake Village.

Powerful storm brings heavy rain and snow to Central Plains and Midwest, making travel 'almost impossible'

A powerful storm brought heavy winds, snow and rain to the central United States on Monday, making travel hazardous and "nearly impossible" in some areas, with extreme weather on both coasts set to last into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said early Monday that the Northern and Central Plains into the Upper Midwest would be affected, with sleet and freezing rain reaching as far as the Mississippi Valley.

Minnesota could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches an hour, bringing travel chaos to the Twin Cities.

A 51-year-old woman died Sunday in Burnsville, 15 miles south of Minneapolis, after her vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree, police said.

Minnesota State Patrol named her as Elizabeth Evans of Lakeville and said she was driving north on Interstate 35E approaching County Road 42 at the time of the accident, NBC News affiliate station KARE 11 reported .

The state patrol said there had been at least 328 crashes reported as of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, involving 13 injuries. More than 200 vehicles spun out or slid off roads, while 10 semi-trailers jack-knifed.

Some 20 million people across the continental United States, from the West Coast to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, were subject to weather warnings Sunday.

California was rocked by a spring storm on Sunday, with hailstones the size of quarters and winds as strong as 60 mph, the NWS said. Lake Tahoe received about a foot of snow, potentially a boost for ski resorts — although several were forced to close ski lifts on Saturday after recording wind gusts measuring more than 90 mph.

Dramatic video captured the moment the L.A. Fire Department rescued a 35-year-old woman from the Los Angeles River, fast-moving and swollen from the storm waters. She was picked out of the rapids by a firefighter lowered by a rescue helicopter. She was taken to a hospital with only minor injuries and hypothermia, the fire department said.

Hundreds of traffic accidents across the Northeast were reported to police overnight as icy conditions took hold.

Over the weekend a powerful weather system battered the tri-state area , with more than 2 feet of snow and downed power lines in some parts. Vermont saw as much as 30 inches of snow, the weather service said.

More than 100,000 customers were still without power in Maine, along with 22,000 in New Hampshire and 12,000 in New York, as of 6:30 a.m. ET Monday, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks energy connections.

Central Maine Power, the state’s largest utility, said in a statement early Monday that it had returned power to half the 200,000 customers affected by the storm, after responding to some 775 emergency calls.

How a Travel Credit Card Can Be Your Ticket to Big Savings

Next time you're planning a vacation, a travel credit card could defray some or all of the costs if it packs the right incentives. Typically, cards with higher annual fees provide the most value with perks like ongoing rewards, free checked bags, airport lounge access or other benefits. But even cards with low or no annual fees make it possible to earn some value toward travel, if you can qualify.

These cards generally require good credit (scores of 690 or higher), and even if you're eligible, it's not worth pursuing one if you can't pay off the credit card bill in full every month to avoid steep interest charges. And if you're working toward paying down existing debt, it might not be worth chasing points and miles until you've made progress on that front.

But as long as travel credit cards align with your financial goals, their potential savings merit consideration — even if you travel just once or twice per year. Explore the flexibility of a general-purpose travel credit card to book travel anywhere, or a branded credit card to book travel with a favorite hotel or airline. Either option may offer money-saving benefits toward your next trip.

Valuable features can lower costs

Offers will vary among general-purpose travel credit cards and airline- or hotel-branded credit cards, but some savings opportunities may include:

If a credit card offers a lengthy list of perks, the value can quickly add up. Here are some features to look out for:

A sign-up offer: Travel credit cards generally come with lucrative sign-up offers that let new cardholders earn a pile of points or miles by meeting a minimum spending requirement. It’s easier to snag if you can strategically time a credit card application around planned purchases during a heavy-spend month or season.

Free checked bags: Some airline credit cards offer free checked bags , which can add up to real savings when applied per person on a round trip. This is one way that Doug Figueroa, a content creator at the YouTube channel Zorito y Doug, makes up the cost of the $150 annual fee on an airline credit card. “The savings are $70 round trip per passenger listed in the same reservation,” he says. 

TSA or Global Entry credit : Some travel cards issue a credit (up to $100) when you use them to pay for a TSA or Global Entry application fee. These expedited airport security screening programs can save time while traveling.

Travel credits: Depending on the card’s terms, travel credits may be used to save money on a variety of travel expenses like rideshare services, airfare or accommodations. 

Airport lounge access: You can skip the pricey airport food with some travel credit cards that offer complimentary airport lounge access . Austin Maxwell, a South Carolina-based content creator at the blog The Maxwells Travel, uses a travel credit card to avoid those costs. “I’m saving $20 to $30 every time I go to the airport because I don’t have to buy food or drinks during a layover or preflight,” he says.

A companion ticket: Some airline credit cards cover the cost of a ticket for a friend or family member. Depending on the card's terms, you may have to pay taxes and fees on the fare, the companion ticket may have an expiration date and/or a spending requirement may apply.

Automatic elite status: You may earn elite status without much effort on some hotel-branded credit cards. Elite status can add up to valuable savings if the program offers free food, bonus points or suite upgrades.  

Free nights: If your favorite hotel has a branded credit card that offers annual free night awards, it can stretch your vacation budget. 

Protections and other benefits

A travel credit card that offers trip delay or cancellation insurance, lost baggage insurance, rental car coverage or other protections may also be of value to you. To qualify for these benefits you typically need to pay for the trip or covered purchase with the eligible credit card. Read the terms carefully to understand the extent of your coverage.

Figueroa says he saved $90 over three days with his card’s primary rental car coverage on a trip to Miami.

“Once you make the online reservation, you must decline all insurance offered by the rental company and pay for everything with your [card],” he says.

High-value reward redemptions

Points or miles on some travel credit cards might lose value if they are used for non-travel redemptions like cash back, gift cards or other options. Travel redemptions typically offer the best value, and you might squeeze out even more value with a general-purpose travel card that allows points to transfer to airline or hotel partners. It’s a strategy that Maxwell uses often to his advantage.

“It’s even better if there’s a transfer bonus associated with that," he says. "Credit card companies offer transfer bonuses — 15%, 20%, 30% bonus — if you are to transfer points to a specific airline.”

He says he has also transferred points to hotel partners to book hotel rooms with them. “It would be the equivalent of getting a hotel room at $120 that’s actually valued at $500,” he adds.

To determine whether to redeem rewards for travel or transfer them to a partner, compare costs by checking the credit card’s booking platform and the partner’s website. Also factor in whether rewards transfer on at least a 1:1 ratio, meaning that you'll get the equivalent value in points or miles transferred.

Travel | travel: alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season.

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

Looking at the most-visited Alaskan port as a proxy for the ship-shape southeastern side of the state, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from early April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Danali-sized jump of 30% compared to the previous mark set in pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which is scheduled to dock in rustic Skagway on April 8. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ) has nearly 100 more after that. Impressive, but two competing companies have staked out larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush; Holland America Line ( hollandamerica.com ) is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises, and at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises ( princess.com ), which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich that they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pitstop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparallel wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau ( traveljuneau.com ). “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears, and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city and other places within this magnificent state.”

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port has over 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said. “Make time to enjoy the fascinating culture, spectacular outdoor recreation, unique shopping, amazing restaurants and artist galleries that Juneau and all of Southeast Alaska have to offer.”

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises’ ( celebritycruises.com ) popular Edge class will make her Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line, meaning it’s between the economical mainstream class and pricy luxury level, has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises ( silversea.com ) ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which prizes openness over symmetry and incorporates an unprecedented use of approximately 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage, and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The near-four-week-long itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn ( seabourn.com ) strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Carnival Cruise Line ( carnival.com ) is staying with a three-ship deployment in Alaska this season. Sharing the workload of 55 roundtrips generally lasting seven to 11 days are Carnival Spirit (2,610 passengers) and Carnival Luminosa (2,260) out of Seattle, and Carnival Miracle (2,667) from San Francisco. Another mainstream cruise line, Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ), has four ships making 85 runs to Alaska from Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage: Ovation of the Seas, (4,905) and older sister Quantum of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (2,543) and Radiance of the Seas (2,466).

Disney Cruise Line ( disneycruise.com ) is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.
