Note that travel times can change depending on the train you book – some are high-speed. Other spots are reachable by bus or car.

Known as the “City of the Three Cultures” for preserving its Jewish, Christian, and Muslim heritage, Toledo is an intriguing UNESCO city (and a former capital of Spain) located only 35 minutes from Madrid by train.

Throughout the years, it was ruled by the Romans, Moors, and the Kingdoms of León and Castile, and it was also home to a flourishing Jewish community in the Middle Ages, making its landmarks popular tourist attractions.

These include many awe-inspiring medieval monuments like the fortress-like Alcázar de Toledo, Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca (turned into a church), Synagogue of El Tránsito, Toledo Cathedral, Castle of San Servando, Puerta de Bisagra, and Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.

You also shouldn’t miss the El Greco Museum and the views seen from the Mirador del Valle, a lookout point overlooking the city and the Tagus River.

Not everyone has Avila on their bucket list, but don’t be fooled, you really should think about visiting the walled city when you’re looking for cities in Spain near Madrid.

Luckily, Avila is just a little over 100 km away from the capital, which means that it is easy to visit as part of a one-day trip from Madrid because it takes just 1 hour of driving time (or an hour and a half by train)!

The walled city of Avila is known for its walls and its famous churches and cathedral. The most famous among these however is the  St. Teresa of Avila church .

The church is a pilgrimage spot of sorts for Christians from all over the world because of its connection with the Carmelite order of sisters. St. Teresa is also the patron saint of the city.

If you visit Avila, walk through the cobbled roads and take in the centuries-old buildings. Catch a meal at one of the many cute local restaurants. Don’t forget to walk along the top of the city’s walls for some really unparalleled views.

You will find that many people combine this trip with a visit to Segovia. This is because you can easily walk all around Avila in an hour or two.

Another perfect one-day destination you can visit close to Madrid is Manzanares el Real.

This beautiful town is located just 50 kilometers North of Madrid (reachable by bus 724 from Plaza Castilla) and offers the perfect mixture of nature, history, and culture.

The highlight of your visit will be the Manzanares Castle. This medieval fortress dates back to the 15th century and is one of the town’s most popular monuments.

You can enjoy the well-preserved rooms of this castle and go up the towers to enjoy the breathtaking views over the surrounding area.

Manzanares el Real is also the perfect place to visit for nature enthusiasts and hiking lovers! There are countless outdoor activities you can do in the nearby Santillana Reservoir, including fishing, boating, and  hiking .

Alcala is packed with fascinating points of interest like the stunning Plaza de Cervantes, Calle Mayor (which was once the Jewish quarter’s main street), the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Cervantes Birthplace Museum (where the novelist was born and raised).

Cuenca  is a beautiful historic town about 170 kilometers east of Madrid. Traveling to Cuenca from Madrid is quite easy. You can catch a high-speed train at Atocha station, and in about 1 hour, you’ll reach your destination.

Cuenca is mostly famous because of the hanging houses, the “Casas Colgadas,” which have been clinging to the cliffs for centuries. These 15th-century architectural wonders are UNESCO-listed and offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history.

When you’re there, make sure to explore the old town, visit Cuenca Cathedral, and go for a walk across the historic San Pablo Bridge, which hangs 60 meters above a canyon.

Also, the city is built on cliffs, so there are many great viewpoints to check out, one even better than the other.

There was a time when you wouldn’t have been able to visit Aranjuez, one of the most beautiful places near Madrid.

Just 40 kilometers south of the capital, it had been one of the official residences of the Spanish Royal Family since the 16th century – their home in spring, to be exact – and commoners were not welcome!

Now, though, the town is a perfect day trip, and the  Aranjuez Royal Palace  is the highlight. Inside, the rooms are decorated in luxurious detail, each like an art gallery with a different style.

The Porcelain Room is particularly impressive, with walls covered in white porcelain reliefs, mirrors, and a chandelier illuminating it all.

The palace gardens are an important part of the royal estate and one of the reasons it has been listed as a World Heritage Site.

From the small manicured Parterre Garden, with its flowerbeds and statues, to the sprawling Prince’s Garden that was once a hunting ground, it’s worth taking a walk through it all.

Calatayud  is one of the lesser-known day trips from Madrid.

Soria is one of the most underrated cities in Spain, almost undiscovered by international visitors.

It could be an easy weekend getaway from Madrid, or even a road trip if you want to explore more  landmarks of the Soria region .

Many visit Soria for the Museum of Numantia and the famous Numantia Archaeological Site, located in Garray (9 km away from the city center).

Numantia  was once a simple Celtiberian settlement, but it made history thanks to the heroic resistance against the Roman Empire: After 13 months of siege, the Numantians decided to burn the city down rather than surrender it to the Romans.

If you’re in search of offbeat towns to visit near Madrid, head to Buitrago del Lozoya, a small medieval town roughly 80 km north of the capital. It is reachable by bus 191, which starts its route at the subterranean part of Plaza Castilla.

Here, you can admire medieval landmarks like the town’s castle, the Church of Santa Maria del Castillo, and the defensive walls, which also provide scenic views of Buitrago and its beautiful natural surroundings.

Unexpectedly, the town is also home to a Picasso museum that houses a collection of his original artworks.

El Pardo, nestled by the Manzanares River, offers a delightful town to visit near Madrid, perfect for nature and history enthusiasts.

This hidden gem combines historical significance dating back to the 16th century with natural beauty, making it a haven for nature lovers and food enthusiasts.

Reaching El Pardo is easiest by car, with ample parking options. Alternatively, buses 601 and 602 run from Madrid.

El Pardo is renowned for the Royal Palace, with a history spanning over 500 years and hosting various royal dynasties.

There is a 9 euro adult admission fee, which includes a guided tour in Spanish of the Palace of El Pardo. If you’re a citizen of the EU or Latin America, you can enter for free & without a guide at certain hours on Wednesdays and Sundays ( read all the details here ).

Note that photography is not allowed inside the palace. After the palace exploration, stroll through the free-to-visit gardens, and don’t miss the Chapel of El Pardo. You can also explore the Casita del Príncipe if it’s open.

A 3 km hiking route along the Manzanares River offers a peaceful nature escape. The surrounding  El Pardo Forest , home to deer and boars, is ideal for birdwatching and hiking. In October, you might hear the deer rutting.

Consider visiting the Convento de los Padres Capuchinos and Quinta del Duque del Arco, offering unique experiences near El Pardo village.

Andalusia is one of the most gorgeous regions in Spain and a must-visit for anyone traveling to the country.

Fitting in the entire region can be challenging for travelers on a shorter itinerary, but luckily, there’s a town within a short train ride of the capital!

Cordoba is one of the cutest and most unique cities you can find near Madrid. Offering an intriguing mix of Arabic and traditional Andalusian culture, you won’t be disappointed with this day trip.

Reaching Cordoba requires a comfortable 2-hour journey on a fast train from Madrid Atocha train station that drops you off right near the old town.

Once you arrive, you should head straight to the Mosque-Cathedral. This is the most popular sight in the town – and for good reason.

This incredible building was originally built as a mosque and later converted to a cathedral, making for an extremely unique building that is absolutely worth the 13 EUR entry fee.

After the cathedral, you can check out a few of the other sights including the Cordoba Synagogue, Roman Bridge, Alcazar, and Roman Temple.

Just remember to sort out your directions before you go, as the  SIM cards in Spain  don’t offer great reception in the old town of Cordoba.

Above all else, you should enjoy some local tapas and a refreshing Tinto de verano – wine with soda. Casa Pepe de La Judería won’t disappoint but it’s hard to find a bad place to eat in Cordoba. This is the correct way to experience Andalusia.

Leon is just under 2 hours from Madrid on the direct fast train. This small city is located in the north of Spain in an area called the Basque Country.

This part of Spain has a climate that is often more similar to that of  Scotland  than the south of Spain, but that shouldn’t stop you from visiting.

Leon is a well-known stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and it was once the capital of the Kingdom of Leon. It is most famous for its Easter parades, which continue for 10 straight days.

In Leon’s old town, there are several beautiful buildings and squares to visit, such as Plaza Mayor and Leon Cathedral. The narrow streets are pedestrianized, making them perfect for a day of exploring.

Just outside the old town are a couple of other sights not to miss, such as Casa Botines, the Basilica of San Isidoro, and the Convent of San Marcos. 

Should you wish to stay overnight, the convent is today a hotel. It is part of the Parador hotel chain, a luxury chain of hotels located in historic buildings.

The lagoons of Mata and Torrevieja are a natural park in the province of Alicante 120 km south of Valencia. There are two main lagoons, the saline Torrevieja, La Mata, located 1.5 km to the northeast. A series of rivers from the Sierra de San Miguel de Salinas feed the lagoons which support a wide variety of exotic bird species. One of the star species of the park are the flamenco, which gather in flocks of around 2,000 during the breeding season. Also important is the presence of the black-eyed zampull with up to 3,000 specimens, as well as cigüeñuela , the white jar , the harrier , cenizo , the avoceta , the common tern , the charrancito and the caraway . 15 Best Day Trips from Granada

Granada is a city with a rich and diverse history that’s found in the heartland of the province of Andalucia in southern Spain.

It’s close to the Mediterranean coastline but is found inland, amongst the cooler hills and mountains in the shadow of the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range.

It’s a city that’s famed for its Moorish legacy, as this was a culturally and politically important city during the Islamic occupation of Spain.

Indeed, in many of the surrounding towns and cities of Andalucia, you will also find many more intriguing histories and Moorish influences too.

There are many day trips to be enjoyed from Granada, from the famous cities of Seville or Malaga, to the mountainous landscapes and high altitude towns and villages of Andalucia.

There’s always the beach to visit too, and the Costa del Sol and its many coastal communities are just a short drive away.

Here are the best day trips from Granada :

1. Sierra Nevada

To the south and east of Granada, the vast Sierra Nevada mountain range will keep you returning day after day to experience all that this outdoor region has to offer.

The mountains here are incredible to see, as the tallest peak reaches a lofty height of 3479 metres.

Mount Mulhacen is the highest peak in Spain, and one of the highest in Europe too.

While you might not necessarily fancy climbing to the top of this high summit on a day trip, there are plenty of other, smaller peaks to tackle and countless trails to hike.

It’s a wild and spectacular part of the country, and a truly unique place to explore.

2. Sacromonte Caves

Sacromonte is found on the eastern edge of Granada, and it makes for an easy getaway from the city.

What you will find in this community though, is a place of extraordinary novelty, as many of the people of Sacromonte don’t live in houses, but in caves.

This is the way the locals here have lived since at least the 16th century, when their ancestors carved homes from the soft rock high in the hills to provide a safe place to live in what were turbulent times.

The caves these days are decked out with all the usual trappings necessary for modern life, and to get inside one of these unusual abodes you would have to talk nicely to the residents, as remember, people actually still live here.

3. Alpujarras

The Alpujarras is a region of mountainous villages and towns that are found in the shadow of the Sierra Nevadas, to the south of the indomitable mountain range.

There are many villages to be found, all of them in striking locations, surrounded by hills and peaks.

The houses and buildings in this region are all a distinct white colour and many still retain the unique Moorish designs and patterns that they were originally constructed with many centuries ago.

There are plenty of hiking opportunities in the hills that can take you from one charming village to the next.

Ronda is another dramatic town that’s found at high altitude in the mountains of Andalucia.

It’s found to the east of Granada, about two hours away, and it takes a steep, sharp and winding ascent of a harrowing cliffside road to reach it.

It was made famous by Ernest Hemingway, who spent much time here and found much inspiration.

It’s one of the most photogenic cities in Spain, perched on a mountain top overlooking a deep ravine.

There are many cobbled streets to walk, never-ending views, and a museum devoted to the history of bullfighting, which provides an insight into this deeply dividing practice.

5. El Caminito del Rey

If you can survive more harrowing heights, then you must travel to the newly opened El Caminito del Rey, a hiking trail which translates as the King’s Little Path.

This is not for the faint-hearted, as the trail follows a route along the cliffs and rocks of El Chorro Gorge, in the same region as Ronda.

Originally, it was simply wooden planks nailed into the cliff itself, but after too many accidents, the authorities closed the original route and turned it into a much safer tourist attraction which can now be walked with a guide and safety harnesses.

On the coast to the south of Grenada can be found the beautiful Moorish inspired city of Almeria.

The city traces its lineage back to the 10th century, when Moorish invaders established the strong defences of the Almeria castle which still stand today.

Walk the walls of this medieval fortress and gaze out to sea as people have for centuries, before strolling through the streets of the modern city and along the shorefront, stopping in local bars and restaurants along the way.

7. Lecrin Valley

The Lecrin Valley is an area of beautiful landscapes and charming villages that can be found just a short drive directly south of the city.

It’s an excellent escape from the city, and you will be amazed at the stunning lake, the rolling hills and the unspoilt nature of the towns and villages.

This is an area that’s not really been developed for tourism, unlike much of the coast, and it doesn’t see the same number of visitors as Granada, so take the opportunity to really enjoy the local culture.

Nerja is a quiet coastal town that’s well known for the elaborate Roman aqueduct that still stands nearby.

It’s a historic place, but many visit for the natural beauty that’s found here too.

The beaches are wonderfully quiet in comparison to other parts of Andalucia, and there are plenty of snorkelling and diving sites offshore.

The Nerja Caves have long been a tourist draw too, and very much worth a visit.

9. Marbella

Marbella is the very centre of the long Costa del Sol that has long been attracting holidaymakers and vacation goers from the colder parts of Europe.

While the nearby resorts aren’t worth a day trip from Grenada of course, the town of Marbella itself is.

It’s in a lovely coastal location, and the long boulevard is breezy in the Mediterranean wind.

There are some excellent restaurants, and you’ll find that most of the tourists much prefer to be on the beach than exploring the streets.

Although found on the Costa del Sol, the city of Malaga is everything that the coastline isn’t.

It’s historic, cultural and for a big city still retains a somewhat local charm.

You don’t visit Malaga for the beaches, but for the grand cathedrals, intricate architecture and the excellent streetside bars and cafes that serve up authentic Spanish cuisine in a laid-back atmosphere.

11. Seville

Seville has a quiet air of authority about itself.

It doesn’t need to promote itself or draw tourists in with deals or cheap flights, because this is Andalucia’s most impressive city destination.

It’s a place of grandeur and ornate architecture, the capital and largest city of the region, and a thriving hub of Andalusian culture and food.

There are extravagant places to explore and a plethora of museums and a maze of old streets to lose yourself in.

Don’t miss the iconic Alcazar of Seville, or the iconic Plaza de Espana, where you can even ride a gondola through the Venice-like waterways.

12. Cordoba

Cordoba is one of the oldest cities in Spain, with its roots going far back to Roman times.

It has played an important role in Spanish history too, as this was the capital of the Moorish Kingdom that ruled Andalucia for centuries.

There is much to see in Cordoba, from the Roman-built bridge that spans the river, to the UNESCO World Heritage old city centre.

There are Moorish palaces with their Islamic inspired designs and Spanish buildings and churches to be seen in Cordoba.

Cadiz is found far to the west of Granada overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, but it’s worth the early start to make a day trip here to enjoy what is Andalucia’s most historic coastal city.

Cadiz is thought to be the oldest city in Spain, founded by seafarers thousands of years ago.

It was from Cadiz that many explorers and conquistadors left to build the Spanish Empire across the world from the 15th century, while in later years it was one of the few cities to hold out against Napoleon.

Stroll the historic streets, watch the Atlantic crash against the harbour walls and enjoy a meal of fresh fish at one of the many local bars.

Murcia is located to the west of Granada, and a visit here will take you outside of Andalucia, and into a different region of Spain.

It’s a long day trip, but it’s an excellent way to see more of this diverse country, and to get a taste of the peculiarities and differences that each region has.

There’s a great deal of history, museums and Moorish castles to explore, as well as some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches to be found anywhere along the Mediterranean coast.

15. Gibraltar

Gibraltar is one of the most interesting day trips that you can make from Granada.

It’s one of the most important and strategic places along the coast, as just across the narrow strait is Tangiers and North Africa.

Gibraltar is essentially just one giant rock, but it’s not Spanish, but British.

It’s a peculiar place to visit, home to a small population of people who speak English and Spanish but portray themselves as more British than Britain.

There are red post boxes, double-decker buses and fish and chip shops.

It’s like England, but it’s sunny.

If you’re new to the Costa Blanca, or are looking for an area with lots to do, the areas surrounding Alicante are definitely places to add to your list of Spanish destinations. All the major airlines fly into Alicante-Elche airport so it’s easily accessible, and only a 2.5 hour flight from the UK.

There are so many things to do in Alicante itself, both with kids and without, but if you’re looking for some places to visit outside of the city then you have plenty to choose from as there are a lot of interesting places to visit within an hour of Alicante.

We live approx. 40 minutes from Alicante and have spent the last 18 months (and many before that on holidays) exploring some great destinations and attractions. It really is a beautiful part of Spain.

One of the best places to visit within an hour of Alicante and the one place that everyone will recommend you check out is Guadalest Valley. Guadalest is a traditional Spanish village in the mountains about an hour away from Alicante. There are always plenty of bus trips to Guadalest , which is a good idea if you’re not too confident driving in Spain as the journey does involve driving up some very windy mountain roads, or you can b ook a private group tour to Guadalest.

There’s enough things to do in Guadalest to spend the whole day there. The main attractions in Guadalest is the reservoir, which is an absolutely amazing colour! From the town you have a fantastic view over the lake, and can even sit in a restaurant and take in the view.

A must visit is El Castell de Guadalest , the castle which is accessed via the museum Casa Orduna, an old Spanish house complete with original furniture, paintings etc. From the top of the castle you have amazing views over Guadalest and the surrounding mountains.

The narrow streets are full of gift shops, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants to find something to eat and rest your legs.

Fonts d’Algar

One of the most popular places near Alicante for a day out is the Les Fonts d’Algar, or Algar Waterfalls, which can be done in the same trip as Guadalest as they are close to each other.

The Algar Waterfalls is a nature reserve found in the Callosa d’en Sarria mountain range and is home to roaring waterfalls and natural pools. This is where the famous Timotei advert was filmed!

The Algar Waterfalls are open all year round, though of course it’s only warm enough to go in the water in the summer months. For just €4 for adults and €2 for children you can spend the day swimming in the waterfalls and taking in the views, and it’s a good idea to buy your tickets in advance in the busy summer months. The water is freezing, even in the very hottest months of the year, but it is a great place to cool down and a lot of fun. You can follow the walk ways to the very top where you can swim, sit, and admire the view. There are platforms to safely jump into the natural pools, as well as shallow pools perfect for kids to paddle. Make sure you take some water shoes as it is very rocky in places.

You can’t take picnics in but there is a restaurant, though it is quite pricey. Outside the gates there are lots of great restaurants, some even have their own swimming pools.

One of the best places near Alicante for a wander around is the town of Elche. Elche is around 25 minutes from Alicante City by car or 30 minutes by bus and is one of our favourite places to visit. Elche is home to more than 200,000 palm trees and many of them are found in Palmeral de Elche, the biggest palm grove in Europe which you can visit for a small fee.

One of the best free things to do in Elche with kids is to visit the municipal park. Also home to lots of palm trees, there’s also children’s play parks, fountains, and picnic areas.

If you’d like more information from a local expert you can also join this Free Tour of Elche where you will get to explore the most important parts of the city.

The town itself has lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants, you can spend a whole day just wandering around (though not on Sundays as all shops are closed!) If you’re after some culture, the Museo Arqueológico y de Historia in the center is a great place to visit, and is free on Sundays. You can also walk up to the bell tower of the Santa María Basilica, which has great views across the park. There are plenty of other museums dotted around including Roman Baths, the fiesta museum, and paleontology museum.

Santa Pola is a coastal town with lovely beaches and a large port with lots of restaurants and bars. The port is a lovely place to visit of an evening if you want a nice seafood restaurant with a view. You can book a bus ticket to Santa Pola from Alicante for just €3 which takes around 40 minutes.

Things to do in Santa Pola include going on a boat trip over to Tabarca Island , visiting the Pola Park amusement park, or the aquarium. There is also a castle in the center of town, plus plenty of streets to wander through. In the summer the castle often holds a great medieval market with stalls full of spices, food, sweets, gifts, and lots more.

You can also visit the Faro de Santa Pola lighthouse just outside of the town, with a skywalk that will give you incredible views out to sea and along the coast.

Torrevieja is a typical Spanish tourist coastal resort with nice sandy beaches alongside a busy promenade full of restaurants and bars. A bus from Alicante to Torrevieja takes and hour and tickets start from €5.

If you walk a few minutes from the center you will find some much quieter beaches perfect for sunbathing and for the kids to play.

If you want to see the coastline you can take a lovely boat tour around the bay or maybe treat yourself to a sunset boat cruise .

Torrevieja is also home to the famous pink salt lake. You can take a trip around the lakes on the land train and learn more about why the lakes are pink, and what they do with the salt. You might even spot some flamingos.

Things to do in Torrevieja with kids include visiting the many parks and gardens, going to the Habaneras shopping mall which also has a kids area on the top level, and visiting the leisure complex next door with cinema, bowling alley, and restaurants.

Guardamar del Segura

If you’re looking for a beach day away from the busy beaches of the center of Alicante then you should definitely head to Guardamar . Bus tickets from Alicante to Guardmar start at €4 and the journey takes around an hour.

11km of golden sandy beaches, sand dunes, and pine forests, Guardamar is our go-to beach.

The main beach has a short promenade with bars and restaurants, and the beach stretches for miles in both directions. Even in the middle of summer you can find plenty of space on the beach if you walk away from the main promenade.

There’s a large weekly market on a Wednesday as well as a night market during the summer. If you’re visiting Guardamar with kids there is a great play park with ducks, turtles, peacocks and red squirrels, as well as a peaceful walk through the pine forest. There is also a new pedestrianised area with bars, restaurants, and play parks.

If you want somewhere a bit more lively, Benidorm is only a 30 minute drive from Alicante or 45 minutes by bus . You can also get the tram from the city centre.

We have only been to Benidorm twice, and stayed away from the main touristy part as we’re not keen on crowded places. The old town is really nice with some great bars and restaurants. There are also some lovely and quieter beaches away from the city centre.

For families, there are various attractions for days out in Benidorm with kids such as the waterpark Aqualandia , the zoological park MundoMar , and the theme park  Terra Mitica .

If you’re looking for some entertainment, the Benidorm Palace is a popular venue with tourists, putting on a wide range of shows and concerts.

Villajoyosa

One of our favourite places to visit within an hour of Alicante is the colourful town of Villajoyosa (or La Vila Joiosa in Valenciano). A coastal town approximately 30 mins from Alicante, the main attractions here are the brightly coloured houses throughout the town. When it’s not too hot you can walk from the top of the town, through the colourful streets, and down to the beach front. If it’s too hot, there are carparks along the seafront.

A great way to see the sights of this amazing town is by joining a Free Walking Tour of Villajoyosa .

The seafront has a lovely promenade lined with some great bars and restaurants looking over the beautiful sandy beaches. You can walk in both directions to find some quieter areas as well as some great viewpoints.

The town is full of history and you can visit the well preserved ancient spa and the Iglesia-fortaleza de la Asunción church. There is even a chocolate factory in the town – we’re saving this for a visit in the colder months!

If you’re looking for a traditional white-washed Spanish village then head to the town of Altea which is around 40 minutes north of Alicante by car or just over an hour by bus . It is definitely one of the prettiest towns on the Costa Blanca.

The main attraction in Altea is the old town which is set on the hillside over looking the sea. The old town is made up of windy cobbled streets with white buldings, and the blue domed church Parròquia de Nostra Senyora del Consol .

The narrow streets are full of unique gift and clothes shops as well as plenty of fantastic seafood restaurants and tapas bars. You also have some amazing views from Altea’s old town.

Down in the newer part of town you have a pebbled beach with a long promenade and lots of restaurants and bars, as well as shops in the streets behind.

If you want a different view of Altea you can book onto a catamaran cruise to sail along the coast and see this beautiful town from out in the bay.

Calpe is a traditional Spanish fishing village turned tourist town just a 45 minute drive to the north of Alicante and is known for its sandy beaches. You can also get a bus from Alicante to Calpe for around €8.

From the beach, and any high viewpoints in the town, you can see the Rock of Ifach rising from the sea. You can climb to the summit of the rock but it is supposed to be a very tough and dangerous climb! If you don’t fancy the climb, there’s a lovely marina next to an old fishing port where you can go on a boat ride around the rock instead.

There are also plenty of bars, restaurants, gift shops, and museums to spend your day out in Calpe.

Indice de la Entrada

The first one on our list of towns near Málaga is Ronda , located about 100 km north-west of Málaga. It is a mountaintop town between two natural parks Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra de Grazalema. It sits right at a 100 m deep ravine called El Tajo . El Tajo divides the city into two parts: the new town (El Mercadillo, ca. 15th century) and the old town (La Ciudad, dating back to the Arab times).

The town has about 35 000 inhabitants. Ronda is one of Andalusian White Towns.

What to visit in Ronda

Without any doubts, when we think about Ronda, we think about its undeniable star: Puente Nuevo (New  Bridge) . This imposing bridge was built in order to connect the two parts of the city, giving to Ronda its peculiar aspect. It’s the main landmark of Ronda and it appears in every picture of the city.

Additionally, Ronda is the city symbol of the bullfight ; here this particular Spanish tradition developed, going from being a knightly preparation for wars to what we know today. Moreover, in the town there was a famous kind of bullfight called “Corrida Goyesca” where participants wore clothes dating back to the 18th century. 

Built during the 18th century,  Plaza de Toros (the bullfight of Ronda) is one of the town’s famous landmarks . In front of the building, you can stroll around the“walk of fame” of the city but here, instead of famous actors and singers, you will see the stars of important local toreros (bullfighters). 

The town marked its relevance in Spain’s history – it is the place where the bullfighting rules were developed (and are still in use today).

The Baños Árabe de Ronda are another interesting attraction that you should add in your list; thermal baths from the 13th century organized as Roman therms. They are considered the most preserved in Spain and the entrance ticket is only 3,75€

Finally, another stop to do in the center of this beautiful town is the Duchess of Parcent Square . What catch the attention here is the Church of Santa Maria thanks to its peculiar structure that includes a balcony in the main facade. 

How to get from Malaga to Ronda

Bus : From Malaga Maria Zambrano you can take the bus until Ronda. We recommend you a direct line because in this way the travel is shorter, approximately 2h and a half

Train : From the train station Maria Zambrano, you can take the train until Ronda train station. It is around 2 hours of travel and when you will get there you have to know that there’s only one train station in the city and after 15 minutes walking you will arrive to the center. 

Remember that there’s only one direct line per day, otherwise you should do different stops and the travel will get longer.

Car : Going to Ronda by car it’s faster. Take the internal way A-357 and A-367 and if there’s no traffic, in one hour and 15 minutes you will be there.

Nerja is definetly one of the most beautiful towns in the Málaga province . The city is a coast town about 50 km east of Málaga and has about 22 000 inhabitants.  

The town is famous for its beautiful beaches and its pretty city center with a viewpoint called Balcón de Europa . Moreover, Nerja is famous for the caves located 4 km outside of town.

The caves have been discovered in the 20th century and inside some Neanderthal paintings were found, possibly the oldest paintings of humanity. The caves create a large complex stretching for almost 5 kilometers. What is more, one of the caves also forms a natural amphitheatre where concerts are held.

Opening hours of Nerja caves : 9.30 to 16:30 (last entry 15.30) / 9.30 to 19.00 (from June to beginning of September – last entry time 18.00)

Nerja is one of the most beautiful places near Malaga thanks also to its stunning viewpoint: El Balcón de Europa (literally Europe balcony).

It is a round plaza at the end of an avenue that provides amazing views over the coastline. By one of the railings stands the statue of King Alfonso XII, who gave the name to the balcony after its visit in 1885. Until 1882 Balcón de Europa used to be a fortress which is why there are some cannons on display today.

How to go to Nerja

Bus: going by bus it’s very easy: From the station Malaga maria Zambrano every 30 minutes there is a direct line of Alsa, that in 1h and 40 minutes will bring you to Nerja. 

Train : No trains from Malaga to Nerja.

Car : take the route A-7 and in approximately 43 minutes you will be in Nerja. 

3. Frigiliana

With a population of about 3000 Frigiliana is one of the smallest on this list of most beautiful towns in the Málaga province . It is about 71 km east of Málaga and about 6 km north of Nerja. So you should definitely consider visiting Frigiliana when in Nerja. There are multiple buses going from Nerja to Frigiliana daily from the same bus stop as ALSA. The one-way ticket is 1,15 € and the ride takes about 15 mins.

What to visit in Frigiliana

Frigiliana i s one of the most beautiful White Towns (Pueblos Blancos) of Andalusia. The upper section of the town, the Mudejár neighborhood, is the oldest part of the town, famous for its Moorish architecture.

Since Frigiliana is located on a hilltop, the views from there are truly amazing; therefore we highly recommend staying at the viewpoint to enjoy the sunset. Surely the town with its narrow cobblestone streets is best to be explored on foot, make sure you don’t miss anything in the maze of winding streets!

In August Frigiliana hosts the Festival of the Three Cultures . It is a festival organized in order to honour the three cultures that influenced bot only this town but Spain in general: Muslim, Jewish and Christian. During  the festival you can attend musical performances, follow a route of tapas and walk through various craft markets.  

How to go to Frigiliana

Bus: Frigiliana is 54 km west from Malaga and just 6 km north of Nerja; for this reason, if you can, we recommend you to visit the two cities together since from there there are multiple daily buses. The one-way ticket is 1,15 € and the ride takes about 15 mins.

In any case, if you’re in Malaga don’t worry you can take bus from there to Nerja and later change to Frigiliana.

Train: no trains from Malaga to Frigiliana. 

Car : take the route A-7 for Nerja and in 45 minutes you will get to Frigiliana.  

4. Antequera

Antequera is known as “ el corazón de Andalucía ” (the heart of Andalusia) because of its cultural and historical meaning but also because of its central position among the big cities of Andalusia: Málaga, Granada, Sevilla and Córdoba.

It’s about 50 km north of Málaga and has about 41 000 inhabitants. Antequera has a lot of different sights to offer, from old burial sites from the Bronze Age, over remnants of Roman presence, such as the Baths, to Arabic architecture.

What to visit in Antequera

Besides of walking around this historical town, there are some attractions that you cannot miss.

• The Dolmens of Antequera : It is  an archeological site nominated World Heritage from Unesco . It is one of the best preserved examples of Megalithic architecture during the Prehistory and you can visit this precious archeological rest for free.
• The Alcazaba of Antequera : As the Alcazaba of Malaga, the one of Antequera is the Muslim heritage that we can admire in this place. The price to visit the monument is 6€ for adults, 5€ children until 16 years and retired people and 3€ children until 6 years. 

Nearby you can find El Torcal , a unique Natural Park Reserve with breathtaking karst landscapes. The 150 million years old limestone creates surrealistic rock formations which leaves you breathless. Stunning views, caves, narrow passages and rare vegetation make El Torcal a perfect place for hiking.

How to go to Antequera

Bus: from the bus station Maria Zambrano, the company Alsa offers various lines to go to Antequera in only 1 h and 15 minutes, if there’s no traffic. 

Train: no trains for this line. 

Car: the shortest way is going through the route A-45 and in 45 minutes you will be in Antequera, ready to visit it.  

5. Marbella

Marbella , well-known for its beautiful beaches , is the place where the rich and famous go on holidays. With a population of about 140 000 it is one of the biggest towns on this list . It is about 60 km south-west of Málaga.

This town is a famous destination all over the year, but especially during spring and summer time since it is famous for its beautiful beaches

What to visit in Marbella

Marbella is divided into two main parts: the Old Town and Puerto Banus .

The Old Town is incredibly charming with its narrow cobbled streets and flower decorations everywhere. There are a lot of shops that sell all kinds of souvenirs and local products. Moreover, you can still see the old city walls. The heart of Old Town is Plaza de los Naranjos , which, as the name suggests, is filled with orange trees. The plaza is also surrounded with multiple shops and restaurants so it’s a perfect spot to take a break and relax.

Puerto Banus is located 6 km west of the town center and it was built in 1970 as a luxury shopping complex. Here you can find designer shops, restaurants and other signs of luxurious lifestyle.

In the summertime the port is filled with yachts and boats. You can sunbathe going to its beautiful beaches or do some shopping all around!

How to go to Marbella

Marbella is 60 km south-west from Malaga, just 30 km more compared with Mijas and for this reason we recommend to do them together if you want to spend a full day outside the city. 

Bus : From Malaga center, go to the bus station of Alameda principal. There you will find the Avanza buses waiting for you to go. The travel will be at least 1h 10 minutes / 1 h 45 min, depending on the changes you have to do. 

Train : no trains for this line.

Car : there are two ways to go from Malaga to Marbella by car: one internal and one on the coast line. We recommend you the last one, since it’s faster (39 minutes) and additionally you will have a nice view! Take the MA-20 and then AP-7 direction Marbella. 

Mijas is another Pueblo Blanco of Andalusia and definitely belongs in the list of most beautiful towns in Málaga province. It is about 30 km south-west of Málaga, so it’s a perfect destinations for a one day trip . The hillside town offers an amazing view over the landscape below. Although nowadays it’s a popular tourist destination, Mijas still keeps its traditional Andalusian spirit.

However, the hillside town of Mijas (Mijas Pueblo) is just one part; other parts of the town are Mijas Costa (about 10 km away, at the coast) and Las Lagunas (a commercial area).

What to visit in Mijas

The first thing that you will see as soon as you do the first step is… donkeys ! Yes, Mijas is full of donkeys in everywhere; this is one of the peculiarities of the town and one of its symbols.

After the economic boom of the 50s’, a lot of tourists who came to Mijas were surprised to see donkeys in the village. They  started taking pictures and paying the farmers for a ride. And that’s how everything starts! If you go to Mijas nowadays, you will find the famous “Burro Taxi” (donkey taxi) that you can take to explore this little village.

In any case whether you visit the town walking or “by donkey”, for sure you will be impressed by its colours…all the buildings are white and decorated with red flowers and blue flower pots. A real postcard scenario .

How to go to Mijas

Bus : Go to the bus station of Malaga Maria Zambrano (just at the back of the homonymous train station); from there you will find the line of the Avanza bus that bring you to Mijas pueblo. 

Depending on the line that you will choose, the travel will last about 1 hour or 1 h and 50 minutes…even if Mijas is very close to Malaga, by bus there are various stops to do!

Train : No trains from Malaga to Mijas.

Car : If you are traveling by car, it very easy and fast to reach the town. From malaga take the AP-7 direction Ctra. Mijas-Fuengirola/A-387. Take exit 214 from AP-7 and at the roundabout take the first exit direction Ctra. Mijas-Fuengirola/A-387. It will take you 30 minutes to go there. 

If you go by car, we recommend you to park at the Parking situated under the City Hall of Mijas, weather if you go by bus, you will already stop there.

Casares is one of the towns near Malaga located a little farther – about 100 km south-west of Málaga, however it’s still worth a visit. It is a small Pueblo Blanco with a population of just 4000; one of the smallest towns near Malaga.

What to visit in Casares

The town is perfect for a relaxing stroll . There are various churches and plazas you can see along the way and some buildings still retain the old Moorish style.

Some attractions that you cannot miss while visiting this small town near Malaga are:

• The Castle of Casares : located in the highest point of the town, was a strategic point in order to control the territory and to communicate. Here you can visit the ruins of this old medieval castle.
• Casa natal de Blas Infante : the birthplace of Blas Infante, considered the father of Andalusia is situated in this town. Nowadays it is a museum with permanent and temporary exposition and it is also the tourist info point.  
• Baños de la Hedionda : outside the town there are these thermal baths dating back to the Roman times. There are various legends related to this site and one of them says that Julio Cesar after curing an infection in this thermal water decided to order the construction of the Baños that we can still visit today. 

How to go to Casares

Bus: Going to Casares by bus, is a long travel, compared with all the others that we have seen. From Malaga Maria Zambrano you can take the Avanza bus line and in almost 4 hours you will get there. 

Train : no trains to Casares.

Car: Don’t worry, if you’re travelling by car the trip is shorter. Also here you can choose between two ways, the internal one and the coastal one and again the second is the shorter. Take the MA-20 an later the P-7; the travel will be around 1h 11 minutes if there’s no traffic
