End of Trip Facilities – the new normal

Once considered a luxury, End of trip (EOT) facilities have become an expected feature for commercial buildings.

In addition to providing secure bicycle parking systems, EOT facilities include showers, changing amenities and clothing lockers. For new buildings, EOT facilities are a standard part of the development approval and design process. For established commercial buildings, the addition of EOT facilities is seen as an essential ingredient to attract and maintain tenants.

EOT facilities

According to a report from Colliers International, office tenants are demanding EOT amenities such as bike racks, showers and lockers more than ever. The Colliers report states, “Having a place for employees to store their bicycles and associated end of trip facilities is particularly important and has been considered more important than car parking for some time now.”

A growing number of CBD office properties now offer amenities that transform the workplace into a living community space where tenants can integrate their home and work lives as well as their travel time in between. Employers are looking to attract staff with better facilities and workplace environments that support better life balance and better living.

At the head of this shift towards greater staff retention through facilities is the provision of high quality EOT facilities. The design of EOT facilities must encourage bicycle use over private vehicle use. While secure bicycle parking and layout requirements are set out in AS2890.3, the design of change rooms and wet areas should be guided by functionality, accessibility and comfort.

End of trip facilities with all the frills: Bike Parking

 • secure bicycle parking
 • locker facilities
 • change rooms
 • "LOCATION: The facility should be close to the workplace with the bike parking, lockers and showers all in the same place. No one wants to walk a long way in bike shoes or sneak through the office in a towel after a shower.
 • WAYFINDING: People need to be able to find the facility easily, from both outside and inside the building. Signs, floor markings and directional arrows can help show the way.
 • GOOD SECURITY: Good security is essential – people must feel comfortable leaving their bikes and belongings. Electronic locks and swipe cards can be a great way to control who has access. CCTV coverage of the bike parking can also give extra piece of mind.
 • BIKE PARKING: A good mix of vertical and horizontal-style bike racks will enable the facility to cater for different types of bikes. Make sure the racks are sturdy and fixed well to the floor or wall. A roof can also help protect bikes from the elements.
 • LOCKERS: There should be at least one secure locker per bike rack. They need to be big enough to store spare clothes, bike helmets, shoes, toiletries etc.
 • SHOWERS AND CHANGING ROOMS – These should be clean and spacious with separate areas for males and females. Providing free toiletries and access to hairdryers and hair straighteners is a nice touch too.
 • TOWELS: A towel service is a fantastic extra. It also means the facility won’t be cluttered by towels hanging up to dry.
 • DRYING ROOM: A warm, well-ventilated drying room is great for both sweaty and rainy days.
 • BIKE REPAIR STAND: A stand with a floor pump and some basic tools can help sort out simple mechanical problems.
 • SPARES VENDING MACHINE: A vending machine stocked with essentials such as inner tubes, CO2 canisters and snacks can save the day.
 • BIKE MECHANIC: Regular visits by a mobile bike mechanic can help keep bikes running smoothly
 • WATER FOUNTAIN: A supply of cool water to keep drink bottles topped up.
 • CHARGING STATION: Dedicated bike racks that enable people to securely charge their electric bikes. "

The Expert: Having spent decades riding just about everything on two wheels, I’ve hauled more than my fair share of bikes on weekend getaways and multi-thousand-mile road trips to destinations all over, from Mexico City through the American West, then all the way up to Banff, and back again. Accordingly, I’ve tried and tested bike racks of all shapes and sizes on a wide array of vehicles, including SUVs, vans, RVs, and trucks. I’ve poured all that experience into my work reviewing bikes, bike racks, and other cycling gear for publications like Bicycling , Popular Mechanics , Popular Science, the Manual , and more.

What to Consider When Buying a Bike Rack

Nearly all bike racks fall under one of four different categories based on how they affix to your vehicle. Each offers unique benefits and drawbacks making a particular design more or less suitable to your situation.

Roof Racks allow you to carry a bike or two upright on top of your vehicle. They’re highly secure, but add extra complications while driving: The extra height of your bike will impact how your car feels while driving. It may also prevent you from driving through tunnels, under low bridges, or using indoor parking structures.

They come in one of three formats: The simplest solution is a tray or clips that augment your existing roof rails. If you don’t have a roof rack, you can also install a complete rack system on your roof. Lastly, there are a limited number of racks that attach to your vehicle via vacuum seal suction cups.

Some roof racks may ask you to remove the front wheel of your bike in transit to reduce the bike’s weight and vehicle’s added height. (This may present a problem for bikes with disc brakes . If your bike has a thru-axle, make sure to check whether you’ll need an adapter to properly secure your bike.

Hitch Racks are generally the most convenient option for cyclists, as they don’t require you to lift the bike all that high, and a few even come with ramps for easy loading. They also tend to offer the highest weight capacity, so they can handle more and heavier bikes. The only catch, of course, is that your car needs to have a trailer hitch.

The rack slides easily into either your 1.25- or 2-inch hitch receiver and locks in place. They’re easy to load, too: Either set bikes on a platform or hang them from a tube, then fix them in place. Most modern racks come with integrated security features, like cable locks, to keep someone from ripping your bike off the rack. Most hitch racks will block your trunk, but an increasing number of models will fold down to allow access without removing your bikes.

The only true downside to a hitch rack is that it adds a few extra feet to the tail end of your car, which you’ll need to keep in mind on the road.

Trunk Racks are typically the most affordable, portable option. They hook onto the car’s rear body panels with straps that pass through the edges of the trunk door. Trunk racks typically weigh just a few pounds and are pretty easy to install and remove once you’ve used them a few times.

Their convenience comes with a few caveats, though. They tend to have lower weight limits than other types of racks, and generally cannot carry heavier bikes, including ebikes and mountain bikes . They can also allow your bike’s pedals, wheels, or handlebars to move, which may scratch or dent your vehicle exterior. (We always fix moveable components in place with bungee cords to reduce rattling.)

Tailgate Pads are a relatively niche option, made specifically for pickup trucks. You drape the pad over your tailgate and secure it to fixed points on the truck bed. The front wheel of the bike hangs over the tailgate, while the rear wheel sits in a bed groove. A strap over the down tube secures the bike in place.

The tailgate pad is a great option if you have the right kind of ride, as it allows you to carry many heavy bikes safely without risking damage to them or your truck. The only downside is that you need to clear out your truck bed to use them, because both the pad and your bikes demand a lot of room.

Compatibility

There’s no point in even looking at a bike rack if it can’t carry your specific bike, or cannot attach to your car. Failing to check, you risk a catastrophic failure, and the horror of watching your bike fall off your car in the rearview mirror.

Checking a rack’s compatibility with your car often comes down to just a couple factors. Most roof racks will work on any type of car, provided you have roof rails installed. Hitch racks are similar, but require a trailer hitch receiver. Trunk racks tend to be the most finicky but, at most, they will specify a certain vehicle shape–sedan, hatchback, SUV, etc.

Determining bike compatibility is often the trickier part. Some racks can’t carry step-throughs , fat tire bikes , or small kid’s bikes . You also need to know your bike’s weight to make sure it doesn't exceed the rack’s weight limit. (This is doubly important for ebikes, which are usually heavier than what the average bike rack can handle.)

If your bike has protruding accessories like fenders, baskets, or lighting, these can be damaged or incompatible with certain racks entirely. While we’ve pointed out a few particular limitations in the picks below, it’s important that you read product descriptions carefully to make sure that your rack meets the requirements set by your specific bike.

Weight Limit

Most racks can support bikes up to 35 pounds, and should be able to haul your average road bike. If you’re carrying multiple heavy bikes–mountain bikes or step-throughs with thicker frames, you should plan to look for a rack that can handle a higher than average amount of weight.

For ebikes, your options narrow even further. Only the sturdiest hitch racks will support most ebikes. Luckily, more and more manufacturers have begun making heavy-duty bike racks specifically for them.

Regardless of what you’re riding, we’d urge you to know how much your bikes weigh and check that number against a rack’s weight limit before buying in.

Bike Capacity

Most bike racks can handle at least two bikes, but if you’re bringing the whole family or a large touring group, there are options that can handle three or more bikes. Tailgate pads are a great option for large groups with lots of bikes.

How We Selected the Best Bike Racks

Our bike-crazed editors have driven hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of miles with their bikes entrusted to these racks. We researched the market, surveyed user reviews, spoke with product managers and engineers, and leveraged our own experience to determine the best options for you.

We hauled road bikes , mountain bikes, ebikes, and commuter bikes , as well as bikes with disc brakes, big wheels, fat tires, and more. We kept these racks and pads on our vehicles for months, using and abusing them until we could confidently say which ones worked and which ones didn’t. If we weren’t satisfied with a particular rack, we didn’t include it.

To update this list, we drew on nearly 40 years of firsthand experience hauling bikes on racks and vehicles of every type. We’ve tested the best and the worst, and have seen them at their finest and when they’ve failed disastrously. The recommendations below represent the latest and greatest to suit a variety of intentions, vehicle formats, and budgets.

Saris Freedom Bike Hitch Rack

Freedom Bike Hitch Rack

With its stellar carrying capabilities and shockingly low price for a heavy-duty hitch rack, this is an outstanding bike rack for just about any type of rider. The Saris Freedom supports two 60 pound bikes, which is strong enough to handle almost anything besides especially heavy ebikes. Its drop-in design allows for easy loading and lets you tilt the rack to access the trunk on a pitstop.

The straps and ratchets require a bit of effort to get everything cinched down, but your bikes will stay in place with little to no wobbling or rattling once they’re set. It does have some limitations–it cannot support fat tire bikes–but beyond that it’s a hitch rack at an outstanding price point that performs as well as many far more expensive options. That’s a combination that’s hard to beat.

Saris Bones 2-Bike Trunk Rack

Bones 2-Bike Trunk Rack

The Saris Bones trunk rack is easy to install and load, with sturdy arms and legs that make it an easy choice for standard road bikes. It’s lightweight, versatile enough to use with a variety of vehicles, and tends to move and rattle less than most other trunk racks thanks to a ratcheting strap system that holds everything securely in place.

While it doesn’t have a particularly high weight capacity, or support some full-suspension bikes, it’s an outstanding rack for casual riders and expert cyclists alike, whether you make regular treks or only need it a few times a year.

In addition to the standard 2-bike format we recommend, the Saris Bones comes in 3-bike and hitch-based 4-bike variations, all of which offer relatively affordable options for a superior bike rack.

Thule ProRide XT

ProRide XT

Thule is one of the most trustworthy names in the bike rack game, and the ProRide XT will show you why. Using a downtube clamp system, it attaches to your pre-installed roof rails, and works with just about any bike within its weight limit. (You will need an additional adapter to secure a fat tire bike, though.)

The ProRide XT maintains a steady grip on your bike as you drive, resulting in little to no motion, and if you add in Thule’s locking mechanism accessory , it keeps your bike secure from theft.

It’s also convenient, allowing you to secure your bike without removing the front wheel, which isn't always the case with roof-mount systems. With the front wheel on, though, you can expect to add a lot of height to your car with a bike installed, which will impact your driving more than your average roof rack. All in all, however, the Thule ProRide XT is easy to use and keeps your bike secure.

Thule T2 Pro XTR 2-Bike Hitch Rack

T2 Pro XTR 2-Bike Hitch Rack

The Thule T2 Pro XTR is a superior hitch rack by pretty much every metric. We have hauled the T2 for thousands of miles and it didn’t wobble on anything but the bounciest of dirt roads, even when loaded with heavy ebikes. Installation and loading feel comparatively effortless, making every bike trip easy.

It’s compatible with bikes of pretty much any format, including fat tires and step-throughs. You’ll probably want to avoid using it with bikes that have front fenders or baskets, though, as the front-hook design is intended to grip flush against the front wheel. Beyond that, the Thule T2 Pro XTR almost guarantees a smooth ride to your bike ride.

Allen Premier Trunk Rack

Premier Trunk Rack

The Allen Premier Trunk Rack is a solid, versatile option that offers straightforward, dependable operation. It affixes to your trunk stably without much effort, and is easy to load and unload. It’s also compatible with most types of vehicles, including sedans, hatchbacks, minivans, and SUVs, which is abnormal for a trunk rack. Given its relatively low weight limit, the rack is made primarily for standard road bikes, but can accommodate step-throughs via a third-party crossbar adapter .

While we’ve specifically tested and recommended the two-bike version, the Allen Premier is also available in three- and four-bike editions as well. Versatile, easy to use, and affordable, it delivers everything you need from a quality trunk rack.

Dakine Pickup Pad

Pickup Pad

The Dakine Pickup Pad protects your truck and your bikes with its thick dual-density foam padding and micro-fleece lining. It keeps a fleet of bikes secure–up to five for the “small” rack, and up to seven with the large one–using simple Velcro straps. The straps are also removable between uses, making the whole setup easy to disassemble when you need your truck bed free.

One small caveat: this tailgate cover has been known to block the rearview camera in newer trucks. If you have a camera, we’d recommend trading up to the Pickup Pad DLX Curve , which is designed to avoid the obstruction.

Yakima OnRamp

OnRamp

Yakima’s burly OnRamp hitch rack is one of our favorites for a number of reasons. Its frame-mounting design accommodates just about any kind of bike, holding them securely with little to no movement, even on a bumpy ride. It includes locks for security and tilts for easy trunk access.

But it stands out among other hitch racks because of its outstanding weight capacity: It can carry two 66 pound bikes–more than enough to carry most heavy mountain bikes or ebikes. It also features an integrated ramp, making it easy and safe to load and unload the heavy bikes you’re hauling. It’s a pricey rack, but it’s a game-changer if you think you’ll have trouble getting your bikes on and off your rack.

Hollywood Racks Destination E Hitch Rack

Destination E Hitch Rack

The Destination E can carry even more weight than the Yakima OnRamp, but it gets a special place on our list because Hollywood Racks claims the design is made specifically for ebikes.

With its 70-pound-per-bike capacity, it should be able to carry most standard ebikes–just make sure to remove the battery when you load it up. It also has an integrated ramp for easy loading. What’s more, its seat-post gripping design means that it can safely carry bikes of any format, which is essential as more and more ebikes embrace the step-through frame.

There are few bikes or ebikes on the market that exceed its weight capacity, and it’s easier to load than just about any rack out there. Since it works with pretty much any kind of bike, this a foolproof option for any cyclist with a 2-inch trailer hitch on their vehicle.

Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike Hitch Rack

RidgeBack 4-Bike Hitch Rack

The Yakima RidgeBack is relatively lightweight for a hitch rack, featuring a dual-arm setup that makes it generally easy to load up. (Though some reviewers on REI report trouble loading the fourth bike when they had a full rack, claiming that there simply isn’t space for a fourth–others, however, didn’t seem to have this issue).

With its tool-free SpeedKnob mechanism, installing and removing the rack from your trailer hitch is also a breeze. Most importantly, the rack barely wobbles or vibrates in transit, so can rest assured that your bikes are secure. You’ll need a crossbar adapter if you ride step-through, but straightforward zip-tie style attachments ensure that your bikes stay put in any case.

Bike Rack Q+A with Expert Reviewer Nick Hilden

best bikes racks

Can I carry anything other than bikes with my bike rack?

From time to time you’ll see people strapping camping gear and other equipment onto their rack on top of or around their bikes. This is a bad idea. Not only can it result in a load beyond the rack’s weight limit, but racks aren’t made to secure non-bike items while in motion, and you can end up losing your stuff while driving, which could cause a safety hazard for vehicles behind you.

Do bike racks get stolen?

An expensive bike rack may be a target for thieves, which is one of many reasons why you may want to remove them between uses if you can. That said, most modern hitch racks and many roof racks feature locking systems, which make them hard to remove without the key. Trunk racks do not have these features, so they are easier to take down.

My Bike Rack is Wobbling… Is That a Problem?

Even the best bike racks move a little bit when you drive down a bumpy road, so you shouldn’t worry over small movements and light rattling. Depending on the rack, certain types of movement and sound are pretty standard:

Roof racks shouldn’t move much beyond the bike wobbling a bit as you drive, but for the most part you should barely know that it’s there. If you can hear the bike moving or feel it moving back and forth while driving, stop and check the rack.

Trunk racks shouldn’t move much, though you may hear their padded feet creaking against the exterior of the vehicle. If you can hear the rack bouncing off your frame rather than just rubbing a bit, you need to stop and readjust.

Hitch racks can wobble, though modern models tend to have locking hitch tighteners that reduce motion to a minimum. It’s not unusual to hear a bit of squeaking noise and rattling when driving over bumps, but if you see your bikes bouncing excessively in the rearview mirror it’s a good idea to stop and check whether the rack is properly seated in the hitch receiver.

END OF TRIP FACILITIES – THE NEW NORMAL

14 Aug 2020 by Cora Bike Rack

end of trip bike racks

Once considered a luxury, End of trip (EOT) facilities have become an expected feature for commercial buildings.

In addition to providing secure bicycle parking systems, EOT facilities include showers, changing amenities and clothing lockers. For new buildings, EOT facilities are a standard part of the development approval and design process. For established commercial buildings, the addition of EOT facilities is seen as an essential ingredient to attract and maintain tenants.

According to a report from Colliers International, office tenants are demanding EOT amenities such as bike racks, showers and lockers more than ever. The Colliers report states, “Having a place for employees to store their bicycles and associated end of trip facilities is particularly important and has been considered more important than car parking for some time now.”

As a contributor to AS2890.3, Cora Bike Rack is considered the industry’s expert in EOT bike parking compliance. Together with partners at enthdegree, Cora provides a complete bike and change room design and fitout service that will provide an attractive facility and luxurious experience for all users.

Selecting The Best Bike Racks For Your Cycle Shelter

end of trip bike racks

By Jonathan Oldaker

Bike shelters and canopies are essential for outdoor cycle parking projects.

While racks and stands on their own are adequate for some short term parking – such as supermarkets or high streets – there is rarely an instance where not using some kind of canopy or shelter is preferred.

Protection can come in the form of open access canopies, enclosed Cubic-style shelters , caging , cycle hangars , or polycarbonate shelters, and helps to keep bicycles protected from inclement weather, and can grant extra security too.

But installing the right shelter for the right project is vitally important for effective cycle parking. The location, capacity, and bike racks are all aspects that need to be properly considered.

With that in mind, here are three key questions you should ask yourself when deciding which bike racks to use in your shelter or canopy.

Glasgow science centre

Glasgow Science Centre cycle hub uses a combination of two-tier bike racks and Sheffield stands

Does your shelter need to be open or enclosed?

The simplest way of differentiating cycle shelters is between open and enclosed variants.

Open shelters:

 • Include all canopies.
 • Are not enclosed or lockable.
 • Tend to be more suitable for short-stay parking.
 • Found at shopping centres, football grounds, train stations, or anywhere where the bike is highly unlikely to be left overnight.

Enclosed shelters:

 • Will have some kind of gate and locking system
 • Usually with keyturn, digi-code, or RFID access.
 • More commonly found at places of work, hospitals, residential projects, or anywhere where greater security and protection is beneficial.

As a rule of thumb, all bike racks and stands should include secure locking points, no matter if located within a gated shelter or not. This being the case, if you’re using two-tier bike racks in an open shelter, we’d always recommend locking bars to allow double-point locking.

In theory, it is more important to have greater access to locking points in an open shelter, where there is a lower overall level of security.

Designated Sheffield stands for accessible, cargo, and non-standard bicycle use is always recommended.

However, Sheffield stands are not the most space-efficient, meaning you won’t be able to keep as many bikes under cover with stands alone.

Using a mixture of racks where possible is preferable, with reserved accessible Sheffield stand spaces.

cycle canopy at university campus

How much height do you have available?

Your shelter height could be limited by a building overhang, windows, budget, or an aesthetic preference. Critically, the height of a shelter will dictate whether you’re able to install two-tier bike racks or not.

Our Two-tier height version of the Cubic shelter is 3000mm or 3100mm, depending on whether or not you include a green sedum roof . That’s just under a metre taller than the standard single-tier height shelter.

With a two-tier shelter or canopy, you’ll be able to substantially increase the cycle capacity per square metre.

Two-tier bike racks will roughly double the cycle storage capacity in the same area as Sheffield stands, meaning you can keep a greater amount of bicycles undercover.

For canopies, the same rules apply. A Two-tier height canopy will allow to store more bicycles under the same width canopy. For single-height open shelters, Cobra racks are more space-efficient than regular stands, and still provide solid frame locking points.

Do you require additional space inside your shelter?

One of the better reasons for installing a Cubic-style shelter is the extra space you can factor in.

Folding bike lockers, for example, require relatively little space and provide additional, lockable space for Brompton bicycles.

With higher density racks, such as two-tier racks and semi-vertical racks , you may be able to leave a little extra space within the enclosed shelter to provide a bike pump or a larger bike repair station and pump unit.

Lockers can also provide storage space for helmets and clothing , turning a shelter into a cycle hub where active commuters can spend longer and look forward to arriving at.

We always aim to provide helpful and honest advice when choosing between cycle parking options. Get in touch with details about your project today.

Bike parking

Council has installed more than 200 free public bike racks across Brisbane, and there are hundreds more provided by other organisations. Council’s City Plan 2014 requires bike parking to be provided for many new buildings, and thousands of bike parking spaces have been approved as part of new developments across the city.

All Council libraries have bike racks, and the number of other Council facilities with racks is growing.

Use Cycling Brisbane’s bikeway map to check where to park.

To suggest a bike rack location, fill in the online form .

End of trip facilities

If you’re not sure whether the building you live, work or study in has end of trip facilities, ask your building manager or a colleague who already rides to work.

There are end of trip facilities at King George Square in the Brisbane CBD and at is the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Herston. The hospital is located near the North Brisbane Bikeway and Enoggera Creek Bikeway .

University campuses also have end of trip facilities:

 • Griffith University
 • Queensland University of Technology

Of course, if you need a helmet , the best cycling clothes , a new e-bike , or accessories , we’ve got guides for those, too. For now, let's dive into bike racks.

The Küat Sherpa 2.0 has been our own trusty companion for years, and it's not hard to see why it's the top pick. This rack is like the best biking buddy you never knew you needed—light as a feather for easy setup and take-down, and it's got your back with unfettered access to your car's trunk, even when fully loaded.

It's versatile enough to handle our cycling adventures, from mountain trails to city streets, securing our bikes like Fort Knox. In the world of bike racks, it's truly in a league of its own.

The Talon shines as our top compact bike rack, beloved for its no-fuss fork-mount design and the latest HUSKE Fork Mount tech. Its trio of robust vacuum cups keep your bike locked down but ensure your car remains mark-free, offering peace of mind alongside unmatched security.

Lightweight and portable, it's a dream for cyclists on the move, fitting snugly in luggage. The beauty of the Talon lies in its simplicity and speed in setting up or removing, catering to virtually any car out there.

Rolling out with the crew just got a whole lot easier with the Hollywood Racks 4 bike hitch mount carrier. This lightweight champ means you can load up everyone's bikes without weighing your car down.

It's like having a personal bike valet for your car, SUV, or truck, thanks to its padded frame holders that rotate to fit bikes of all shapes and sizes. Plus, it folds down when flying solo, keeping things sleek and safe.

No hitch? No problem. Upgrading the trunk rack game, the Bones EX sails in with a clever twist. Designed by the talented Fabio Pedrini and produced in Wisconsin, it sidesteps the spoiler issue with a nifty leg design, boosting the amount of vehicles it'll work with.

Lightweight yet tough, it securely holds up to 3 bikes and respects your car’s paint with articulate rubber feet. With its sleek look and made from recyclable materials, it's good for your car, bike, and the planet.

The Thule UpRide stands out for its innovative approach to roof-mounted bike transport, securing bikes without touching the frame or fork. This feature ensures your bike remains pristine, no matter the journey.

Thanks to its versatile design, it easily accommodates a wide range of bikes. While its setup might initially seem complex, its performance, once mastered, is unmatched, offering a stable and secure transport solution. It's especially suited for vehicles with lower roofs and lighter bikes, making it a top pick for cyclists who value their bike's condition and easy loading.

The StageTwo hitch rack has won over our team with its ease of use and remarkable versatility. It effortlessly accommodates a wide array of bike sizes and weights, up to 70 pounds each, making it a haven for hefty e-bikes. The optional loading ramp is a back-saver, and its security features give you peace of mind.

Although its robustness means it's a bit on the heavier side and not the easiest to stash away. Still, its sturdiness and high weight capacity make it a standout choice.

The VelociRAX 5 takes mountain biking adventures to a new level of convenience. Designed for hitch attachment, it easily holds up to five mountain bikes, with generous spacing to prevent any overlap.

Its standout feature is the hassle-free roll-in loading, which is perfect for kids and adults alike, eliminating the need to lift bikes high. The integrated hydraulic dampers ensure the gentle lowering of bikes, including a garage wall mount for storage. However, while it’s ideal for flat handlebar bikes, drop handlebar bikes only fit at the end.

This budget-friendly 2-bike rack is a game-changer for the occasional rider. Not only is it light and easy to manage, but its foldable wheel trays mean you can stash it away in a closet when not in use. With features like platform carrying, padded hooks, and sliding wheel hoops, it's versatile enough for different bike sizes.

Plus, the ability to tilt down with bikes loaded offers convenient access to your car's cargo area. Though extra accessories like fat bike hoops are sold separately, this rack's blend of functionality and affordability makes it a solid starter choice.

Are bike racks weatherproof?

A rack should suffer the rain. Because it keeps the bike the farthest from the road in the rain, a roof rack is arguably the safest rack to use. When using a hitch rack or trunk rack in the rain, be prepared for road grime to kick up around the back of the vehicle.

Do bike racks damage cars?

Any bike rack can cause damage if it's not installed properly, utilized incorrectly or neglected. Trunk racks can cause damage to your vehicle's finish, which may allow rust to form on your car's body, which will lead to greater damage over time. In the case of hitch-mounted racks, the rack, the hitch, the car, and the bikes might all sustain damage if more weight is placed on the rack than the hitch or the rack handle. If your bikes are mounted on the roof of your vehicle, be mindful of your overhead clearance.

Can you leave a bike rack on your car?

In some states, it may not be legal to leave an empty bike rack on your vehicle. If you leave your bike rack on your car while you're not using it, it's more likely to be stolen. When you aren't utilizing the bike rack to transport a bike, it is usually advisable to remove it.

Can you take a bike rack through a car wash?

Manufacturers of bike racks and car-wash establishments usually advise taking off bike racks before having your vehicle washed. Bike racks can damage the equipment, which could result in fines or legal repercussions, and they are not made to withstand the force of a vehicle wash. In a self-service car wash where you can manually control the water pressure and direction, you can rinse out your rack if it's dirty.

How fast can you drive with a bike rack installed?

In most cases, you can drive as fast as you normally do—if you have a reliable bike rack that is properly fitted. Some racks have speed limitations on their manufacturer warranties. Your car will experience significant drag or wind resistance if you have a roof rack hauling large mountain bikes on top of it. Your speed and gas mileage will also be impacted by the style of rack you use. On the other hand, a bike rack that is attached to a hitch will have far less wind resistance.

Do car bike racks need lights?

While some states have regulations governing license plates and automobile lights when towing a bike rack, the majority do not. But you should consider putting lights on your bike rack as a safety feature. Done correctly, adding a few lights to your bike rack will give you greater protection and visibility.

Can you open the trunk with a bike rack installed?

If your car has a trunk-mounted rack installed, you should avoid opening the trunk because doing so could harm both the rack and the car. Even if you are able to open the trunk with the rack attached to the vehicle, the additional weight of the rack could force the lid to close abruptly. However, if your automobile has a hitch-mounted bike rack, you might still be able to access the trunk. Some bike racks for hitches feature a swing-away mechanism.
