2002 Ford Excursion review: Our expert's take

Ford’s Excursion is one of the biggest SUVs on the road. While its size may draw the ire of those who fret that SUVs have gotten too big, this is a vehicle meant for work. It can carry up to nine people or tow up to 11,000 pounds. If you need to tow a horse trailer, large boat or haul half of the Little League team, there is nothing like it.

The Excursion, first introduced in 1999, is not just big, it can be loaded with enough luxury equipment to rival nearly any car. That increases its appeal to upscale buyers that have use for its capabilities. For 2002, the Limited Ultimate tops the model lineup with a formidable list of luxury appointments: dual second-row captain’s chairs with leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, steering-wheel controls for temperature and audio and a rear-seat entertainment system that has a video screen mounted in the ceiling. The unit in our test vehicle used VHS tapes, but a DVD system will be available later in the year. While most of the attention for 2002 is focused on the Limited Ultimate, all models get clear-lens headlights and new colors.

A two-wheel-drive XLT starts at just over $35,000, and a four-wheel-drive, turbo-diesel Limited Ultimate starts at nearly $47,000. That’s the model I drove.

Driving a rig this big has a certain appeal. It is nice to have a vehicle capable of hauling heavy trailers, swallowing all sorts of lawn or home-improvement junk or even a couple of bicycles. Sitting up high gives a commanding view of the road, and its sheer bulk imparts a sense of security. From a practical perspective, the Excursion mixes the people-hauling capability of a minivan with the load-carrying ability of a pickup. It is more than 7 inches longer and nearly 6 inches taller than the Chevrolet Suburban, although on the road it didn’t really drive much differently than a Navigator or Expedition. The 137-inch wheelbase inhibits the turning radius, and that in turn required extra care in parking lots and bank drive-ups.

Getting in requires use of the side step, at least for me, and once you’re settled inside, its spaciousness is obvious. Because it is based on Ford’s Super Duty pickup truck, the cabin is wide and the instrument panel looks more utilitarian than that of the smaller F-150. A large center console separates the front seats. The Limited has five power outlets, including some on the rear of the floor console, so occupants can use laptops, portable CD players and telephones. Woodgrain trim softens the trucklike interior and makes it more inviting. Flipping on the seat heaters takes the chill out of autumn mornings.

Second-row captain’s chairs reduce seating capacity to seven, but that is hardly a drawback. The captain’s chairs are more comfortable than a bench seat and allow easy passage to the third seat. Easy access to the third-row seat would be handy for parents who put child seats back there. Access to the second seat has been simplified by back doors that are 5.5 inches wider than those of the Suburban. There is 48 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third seat alone. Remove the third seat, fold the second seat flat and a full sheet of plywood slides right in. Around back, the glass hatch tilts up and two side-opening doors take the place of a tailgate. The dual doors allow access to the cargo space while a trailer is attached.

Four-wheel-drive Excursions have two powertrain choices: a 6.8-liter Triton V-10 and the 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel. The Power Stroke engine is the choice for those who need to do serious hauling because its 500 foot-pounds of torque is available at low rpm. Although the diesel is noisier than the gasoline engine in city driving, it runs very quietly on the highway. Aside from higher towing capacity, it also gets better fuel mileage. Our test truck’s computer showed an average of 13.7 miles per gallon in city driving, and that is better than the V-10. On the highway, the diesel should be capable of 17 or 18 mpg, hich is not bad considering the size and weight of the vehicle.

The electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system, activated by a dash-mounted selector switch, allows total disengagement of the front wheels by a vacuum system.

In spite of its engine size, the Excursion qualifies as a Low-Emission Vehicle (LEV) that produces 43 percent fewer smog-forming emissions than the maximum allowed by law. Recycled steel, aluminum, plastic and rubber make up about 20 percent of the vehicle, and at the end of its life more than 85 percent is recyclable, according to Ford.

The automatic transmission’s automatic tow-haul feature uses a computer module to help adjust transmission shift patterns for hills, changes in altitude or towing heavy loads. A switch on the gear lever locks out the overdrive fourth gear to obtain third-gear braking in downgrades. The transmission also has a standard auxiliary cooler for heavy-duty use.

To counteract concerns that the Excursion poses a danger to smaller cars in a collision, Ford designed a beam under the front bumper, at the same height as a regular car’s bumper, to absorb energy and keep the truck from riding up over a smaller vehicle in the event of a collision. The standard Class IV trailer hitch serves much the same purpose in back.

Price The base price of our Limited Ultimate was $46,905. Power telescoping towing mirrors, second-row captain’s chairs, in-dash six-disc CD player and the rear-seat entertainment system brought the sticker price to $50,325.

Warranty Three years or 36,000 miles.

Point: For people who need heavy-duty hauling or towing, the Excursion stands ready and willing. It can hold up to nine people, depending on the seat configuration, or tow as much as 11,000 pounds. The Power Stroke diesel is the engine of choice for those who tow. The Limited Ultimate model has luxury-car accommodations, and a rear-seat entertainment system is optional for 2002.

Counterpoint: The size that makes the Excursion ideal for hauling is also a drawback when it comes to city living. In addition to having a sizable thirst, it is tall, wide and bulky, especially in shopping-center parking lots and bank drive-through lanes.

Great deal of go and bro

This is one of the greats. What can you buy that even comes close? Super duty line of trucks have been on the roads forever and still go strong. They are leaf spring supported and not whisper quiet on the highway. But you can load 8 people, gear, and pull a big trailer or whatever you want from one side of the country to the other. They are big yes but whatever, they are the length of a short bed super cab pickup. Not crew cab, so not really so huge. Get your x, b code springs and do a little here and there these things last and do work, plus look good at 20 years old

2002 4x4 Excursion Transmission question

  • Add to quote

I have used this truck to tow a 34' 9600 lb TT. Currently has 118k on it. Towing probably constitutes 15% of the mileage. I have towed the last 2 weekends with strange results. 1st weekend was to the mountains in NC but I was only towing a utility trailer with a four wheeler on it. I never noticed any problems until we stopped to drop the four wheeler off on the return trip. I had towed about 200 miles when we stopped. After dropping off the four wheeler the truck would not drop into 1st gear. (it is an automatic BTW) I tried to manually move it into first and second and it wouldn't go into either (IE, the lever moved correctly, but the transmission acted as if it was in high still.) I turned the truck off and back on and the problem went away. The transmission temp gauge was reading in the middle like always.(I do not have an aftermarket gauge) This past weekend I hooked up the camper to go to the beach. As soon as I started down the drive way the I noticed the truck wasn't in low. Went through the routine again (shifted to 1st and 2nd then turned the truck off.) Same results. Shifted fine after that. Worked fine the rest of the weekend. BUT, I have a 2 week trip to Florida planned for this June. So, I am wondering if there is something I should be doing now, to try to find a potential problem. The last time I changed the transmission fluid (at 90k miles BTW) I used Mobil1 ATF. We do NOT put a whole lot of miles on this truck. (Been almost a year since I changed the fluid and we took a long trip right after I changed the fluid last spring) Any suggestions or ideas? I am thinking I may do another transmission fluid change IF I can find the right transmission fluid (I read a post somewhere that Mobil1 has changed their ATF to be Mercon V) Past that I am not sure what else to try. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, greg

I would have the codes pulled and see what they say.

Even though there were no flashing lights or anything (O/D light not flashing or any other indicators that I could see) ? You think it may have some sensor going bad in the transmission? greg

Could be the shift solenoids. It doesn't always have to turn on the warning lights to have a code.

Add 1 can of TRANS-X and it will take care of that sticking valve.

[ QUOTE ] Add 1 can of TRANS-X and it will take care of that sticking valve. [/ QUOTE ] And the rest of the transmission along with it. Transmission over haul in a can never takes care of the real issue with the transmission. FMT

[ QUOTE ] Could be the shift solenoids. It doesn't always have to turn on the warning lights to have a code. [/ QUOTE ]take it to a reputable transmission shop ( not aamco or cottmans ) and they will probably put it on the scanner for free. ( we do )Most of the time it is the solinoid pack in late model E4OD and 4R100. I have also seen the ignition switch cause the same prob but that usually affects the lockup on the torque converter causing it to slip while trying to lock. this mostly happens on GM 4L60E and 4L80e but some fords to. hope you catch it soon or you may be looking at some$$$$$$$ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

2002 excursion transmission

[ QUOTE ] Could be the shift solenoids. It doesn't always have to turn on the warning lights to have a code. [/ QUOTE ] That's my guess. I think you can get that done for under $400. Time to start thinking about your new BTS tranny.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.
