A Lesson in Perth’s History for School Excursions
Home of the Swan Bells
The Bell Tower is an ideal place for school excursions in Perth. More than 85 school groups per year enjoy a unique glimpse into the history of this State and its connection with the historic bells from London’s most famous Royal Church, St Martin in the Fields in Trafalgar Square… and been engaged in interactive demonstrations available nowhere else in the world!
The Bell Tower is a safe and controlled environment for educational excursions for schools in Perth and our experienced staff are skilled at dealing with large groups of students. We have experienced guides with Working with Children Checks, who provide a unique opportunity for students to participate in the chiming of the historic bells.
When your group visits, we can arrange for a fascinating live demonstration and explanation of bell handling by one of our guides (advance notice required). As you wander around the Tower you will discover an ever growing collection of antique bells, clocks and bell-related material from all over the world.

School Day Tour Activities
Indicates that a telescope is seen or involved
Year 3/4 Day Tour Activities
- M1. Meteorites and the Moon
The students see the (very large) piece of a meteorite in the Observatory Museum, with a discussion covering the history of the meteorite and the most common origins of meteorites. The students then engage in activities demonstrating the moon phases and why we see them.
- M2. Our Solar System
Students will look at the order of the planets in the solar system along a scaled route. This will be followed by an extension activity related to the Solar System.
- M3. Sun, Earth and Moon
This activity compares the sizes of the sun, earth and moon and then engages the students in role-play to show how the sun, moon and earth interact. An introductory look at the planets is also included with a mnemonic to help remember the order of the planets from the sun
- M4. Lowell Telescope 1
This was the main research telescope at the observatory. Students will learn about some aspects of astronomical research and how the telescope works. There will be a discussion about the Mars exploration program and the use of helicopters on Mars, and the student will then make a paper helicopter.
- M5. Astrograph 1
By being allowed to move the telescope, students will see how this historical telescope (1896) was still being used in the 1990s for astrophotography. Students are introduced to the long-drawn-out process of taking photographs in the past which is compared to modern photography.
- M6. Here comes the Sun
Weather permitting, students look at shadows and how they change as the Sun appears to move across the sky. They will then move to our Solar viewing dome where they will view and discuss images of the Sun. The students are presented with some limited information about our Sun.
(Do not choose M7 if you select this activity)
M7. Shadows and Sundials Weather permitting, students look at shadows and how they change as the Sun appears to move across the sky. They examine the observatory sundial and then make a paper sundial of their own which they can use and compare to the time on the Observatory sundial and then take back to school.
- M8. Sunshine and Rainbows
Students use objects to produce rainbows on a screen. The reason for rainbows is discussed as well as their link to astronomy. The students then have a look at objects through coloured filters to see what happens to the rainbows
Note: If you would like the children to use the ‘rainbow glasses’ there will be an extra $1.00 charge per student and the rainbow glasses can be taken home.
- M10. Telescope Tour
This gives the students an opportunity to look at two or three of the Observatory’s old and more modern telescopes and learn a little bit about their history and what they were used for. This is a useful addition if you would like the students to leave having seen some telescopes but your choices do not include any.
M12. Worl Wangkiny – Noongar Sky Stories
An introduction to the Noongar use of the night sky and some Noongar stories
Year 5/6 Day Tour Activities
- U1. Meteorites and More
The students see the (very large) piece of a meteorite in the Observatory Museum, with a discussion covering the history of the meteorite and interesting information about them. They then engage in activities that demonstrate moon phases and eclipses.
- U2. Solar Walk
This walk demonstrates the distances between the planets using a scale model with facts about the planets presented as they walk. They then try to fit carded information to the right planet discussing specific aspects of some planets.
- U3. Solar Rings
The students use teamwork to initially sort the planets into order on our solar rings diagram and then work out which orbital times belong to which planet. Students try to work out how old they would be on some of the planets based on the length of the planets’ orbits and then have an opportunity to see how old they would be on each of the planets. They then engage in an activity that looks at the sizes of the planets and is given a mnemonic to remember the size order.
- U4. Lowell Telescope 2
This was the main research telescope at the observatory. Students will learn about some aspects of astronomical research and how the telescope works. The Mars rover and helicopter exploration may be briefly discussed. They will then engage in an investigation related to gravity and mass.
- U5. Astrograph 2
By being allowed to move the telescope, students will see how this historical telescope (1896) was still being used in the 1990s for astrophotography. Students are introduced to the long, drawn-out process of taking photographs in the past which is compared to modern photography.
- U6. Seeing the Sun
Weather permitting, students get the opportunity to look at the sun in real-time safely in two different ways. The first is using Sunspotters. The students use these instruments to project an image of the sun indirectly onto a piece of white paper. They are instructed to ensure they do not look at the sun.
The second is using a dedicated solar telescope with inbuilt solar filters and students look through the telescope at the sun. At all times there is an emphasis on safely looking at the sun and the students are instructed to never look at the sun through any other telescope. They then engage in a discussion explaining some of the sun’s activities.
- U8. Survival on the Moon
Students learn a bit more about the moon and do a NASA-designed activity to see if they and their friends would survive a crash on the moon.
- U11. Telescope Tour
U12. Worl Wangkiny – Noongar Sky Stories
Please Note: If the weather does not allow for outside activities, activities presenting similar concepts will take place inside the main building. However, if at all possible, some activities will take place in the domes so that students. can see the telescopes. Perth Observatory reserves the right to change or adjust these activities as necessary.

- James Turner
We know being a teacher is hard work. We also know that organising and running a year group excursion or holiday camp for half the school while trying to manage your own classroom, mark assignments, sleep, eat and keep your own life in check is a serious balancing act. So, to make your lives easier, we wanted to give you a head start for 2020 with our take on the top Perth school excursions and holiday camps. We’ve got something for all kids – from adrenaline-filled zip lines to historical recounts at Fremantle Prison. We hope these give you some ideas for next year to help you mark one thing off that never-ending list of to-dos.

Other activities include the raft building centre where kids can work in teams to build their own rafts out of poles and barrels and race other teams to the middle of the dam and back.
Swan Valley Adventure Centre

A great option for the day is the Swan Valley Adventure Centre located on the fringes of Perth. The team here pride themselves on customising group programs to suit each school and the curriculum. A typical day here can look like:

NSW government announces school funding to be slashed by 1.25 per cent
Public schools in one state have been told to brace for “quite significant” funding cuts, as households opt to send their kids to independent schools.

Grim sign parents ditching public schools
Disturbing trend in Aussie schools
Public schools across NSW have been slapped with a “significant” funding cut, as the state tries to get teachers back into the classroom to help bolster flagging enrolment rates.
NSW Education Minister Prue Car informed principals on Tuesday of a decision to slash the School Budget Allocation Report (SBAR) by 1.25 per cent.
The SBAR provides government funding for public schools to pay for a range of things such as maintenance, electricity costs and teacher salaries – which make up the bulk of expenses.
Disaster and pandemic supplementation, which was introduced in 2019, is also slated to be phased out from the start of term 2 on April 29.
NSW Primary Principals Association president Robyn Evans said the decrease in SBAR funding would be “quite significant” on budgets, and hoped the government would stand by its commitment to support schools.
“It’s hard news to take but there’s a commitment from the department and the government to support the schools individually,” she said.
“While it’s a blanket plan, individual schools have unique needs.
“So we just have to weather the storm. No one is saying it’s going to be easy and but the change had to come.”
NSW Education Minister Prue Car said the funding reform would bring teachers back into classroom, after the Coalition’s ‘local schools and local decisions’ policy increased the number of executive roles such as assistant and deputy principals under temporary contracts.
“Student outcomes are our absolute priority and we must ensure teachers are spending their time where it matters: in the classroom,” she said.
“We are asking principals to make decisions that will help schools address the staffing issues they face across the state.
“If we want to rebuild enrolment numbers, we have to put high quality teachers in every classroom.
“It’s the only way we turn around student outcomes and instil confidence in our great public education system.”
Earlier on Tuesday, new figures released by the NSW Department of Education revealed public school enrolment rates across NSW had fallen for a fourth year in row, as households move to private, religious and independent schools.
Since Covid, total enrolment across government schools dropped by more than 24,000, from a peak 810,705 students in 2020, to 786,434 in 2023, despite the total number of student enrolments across the state increasing.
The state’s public schools reporting 1782 teacher vacancies as of the first week of 2024.
NSW Principals Council president Craig Petersen said schools would be affected differently depending on the size of their student body, and whether they receive addition flexible funding if they have students with disabilities, refugees or Aboriginal students.
Schools which have employed more than their established quota of staff, may not be able to afford to continue employing that teacher.
“The worst case means schools may not be able to employ some of the teachers in the programs they were running,” he said.
“In other cases it may well be that some minor improvements around the school will not be able to go ahead.
“What that 1.25 per cent means in context is going to depend on each school.”
NSW Teachers Federation president Henry Rajendra said NSW’s public school system had to evolve after previous policies “deliberately left schools to fend themselves”.
“We have long argued against the previous Coalition government’s failed Local School, Local Decisions policy that devolved education funding to school bank accounts, pushing workload, accountability and blame onto schools,” he said.
“It is now up to the current state government to rebuild the system by providing the additional permanent staffing and centralised support all public schools need and students deserve.
More Coverage
“To do so, we allow principals and teachers to focus on what matters most; teaching and learning and realising the potential of all students.”
The funding cut will affect all schools, with the exception of small schools, Schools for Specific Purposes (SSPs) which support students with intellectual disabilities, and other moderate to high learning and support needs, as well as Intensive English Centres.
The government has confirmed the funding reform will not affect P & C funds, community funds, spending from schools’ allocated budgets or money already transferred.
