- Bandipur National Park
Bandipur National Park is regarded as one of the most beautiful and better-managed national parks of India. Located amidst the picturesque surroundings of the towering Western Ghats on the Mysore-Ooty highway in Karnataka, it is an important part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that constitutes Karnataka’s Rajiv Gandhi National Park ( Nagarahole ) to its Northwest, Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary to its South, and Kerala’s Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to its Southwest. The total extent of Bandipur National Park is 872.24 sq km. It is located partly in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar District and partly in H.D.Kote and Nanjangud taluks of Mysuru District.
Once the private hunting grounds of the erstwhile Maharajas, and nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur has had a long tryst with tigers. One of the thirty reserves identified across the country to save the tiger and its habitat, it’s also one of the last refuges of the endangered Asiatic wild elephant. Apart from the two famed residents, a number of other endangered species such as sloth bears, gaurs, Indian rock pythons, jackals, muggers, and four-horned antelopes can be spotted in this national park. Bandipur also shelters sambar, mouse deer, chital, sloth bear, and the rare flying lizard. Over 200 species of birds and a diversity of flora add to its attraction. Bandipur also supports a wide range of timber trees including teak, rosewood, sandalwood, Indian-laurel, Indian Kino tree, giant clumping bamboo, etc.

Bandipur National Park
Bandipur National Park, established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second-highest tiger population in India. These forests are contiguous with Nagarhole, Wayanad, and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, hence providing safe haven for a number of species – notably the Indian Elephant and Royal Bengal Tiger.
Once a private Hunting Reserve for the Maharajas of Mysore, this landscape is now part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve – one of India’s conservation success stories.
Bandipur has a variety of biomes including dry deciduous forests, moist deciduous forests, and shrublands. The wide range of habitats helps support a diverse range of organisms. The park is flanked by the Kabini River in the north and the Moyar River in the south..

About Bandipur national Park
The open-ness of the Bandipur park provides for huge Elephant herds and one of the last strongholds of the Indian Wild Dogs – the extremely intelligent pack hunters of the Indian Forest. The Kabini River separates Bandipur from Nagarhole, yet the denizens are able to traverse freely between the 2 parks when the water levels recede.
The elusive Black (melanistic) Leopard has been spotted in Bandipur national park on more than one occasion, and it is believed that there are multiple individuals living inside the park. Therefore, it is safe to say that a tiger safari in India is incomplete without experiencing all that Bandipur National Park has to offer.

Where to stay at Bandipur National Park
By Arzoo Dina
Nestled at the foothills of the Nilgiris, Bandipur may not pop up on your radar as often as other wildlife sanctuaries, but it does offer an impressive array of sightings, ranging from wild elephants to sloth bears, sambal, chital, leopards and over 200 species of birds. Tigers, of course, are the big draw—the park has the second largest population of the big cat in India. This national park is also your best bet to spot large herds of wild elephants traversing across forests and grasslands. Now isn't that a sight for sore eyes?
4 places to stay when visiting Bandipur National Park
Jungle Lodges, Bandipur Safari Lodge
On the tiger trail, Bandipur Safari Lodge
Looking to be at the heart of the action? Bandipur Safari Lodge is an apt base from which to kick off your expedition in the wild, as it is just adjacent to the park's boundaries. Twenty-two contemporary cottages make up the accommodation here. You don't have modern comforts like air conditioning and televisions, but who's complaining when you have stunning vistas for company? Jeep safaris into the park are available twice-daily and guided treks are also offered. Cap off the day with dinner around a bonfire or curling up with a book on the local wildlife. Doubles from Rs8,850. Website
The Serai, Bandipur
The Serai Bandipur
Nestled along the fringes of the forest reserve, The Serai encourages you to slow down with its tranquil surroundings. The accommodation is a mix of tastefully done up cottages and rustic log huts that are raised on stilts. Wooden rafters and stone-tiled floors make for charming accents, and the private verandas are great for gazing out at warm sunsets. The bar, Moyar's Edge, with its tall glass windows and unhindered views of the Nilgiris, is the perfect way to unwind after a day of wildlife spotting. The resort is a short drive from the base of the tiger reserve, so it's easy to hop on to a jungle safari. They also offer mountain bike trails. Meals are a leisurely affair already but if you're looking for something more special, opt for an alfresco dinner set to the sounds of nature. Doubles from Rs14,500. Website
Dhole's Den
Lush green views from Dhole's Den
This boutique safari lodge also doubles up a homestay, as it's the residence of Kartik and Ingrid Davey, both self-confessed dog lovers and passionate about local wildlife and conservation. Rest assured, they'll fix you up with the best experiences while you're here. Dhole's Den is inspired by the Asiatic wild dog, typically found in this region. The eco-friendly property has varied styles of accommodation—from rooms to garden mansions—and if you're a larger group, there is even a semi-detached ‘mansion', complete with a private sun deck, overlooking the property's rain water pond. Apart from safaris, nature walks and bird watching are some of the other activities you can indulge in, but we also suggest going for their tea drive in an open 4x4 jeep. You'll wind your way through quaint village roads and narrow jungle tracks, before arriving at a picturesque location to enjoy a simple tea-time spread of sandwiches, hot tea and snacks.
