Visit the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands & two of its most famous islands on this tour of Stromboli & Panarea. You'll enjoy the tranquility of their fishing villages and witness a magical spectacle of nature: see a volcano erupting!

Stromboli

Description

At the appointed time we'll meet on Via Ammiraglio Luigi Rizzo. From here, we'll go to the pier and board a boat that'll take us to the island of Panarea .

Cruising across the Tyrrhenian Sea , we'll   make our way to this island, the second smallest of the Aeolian archipelago. As we get closer, you'll be able to see the great beauty of one of its most emblematic beaches,  Cala Junco . Did you know that here lie the remains of an ancient settlement dating back to the 14th century BC ?

We'll disembark at the fishing port and leave you two and a half hours of free time to stroll around and enjoy the rich local gastronomy. Then, we'll return to the boat and head north towards Stromboli , admiring views of the island's great volcano and islets like Basiluzzo , Lisca Bianca , Lisca Nera and Bottaro along the way.

Once in Stromboli, we'll leave you another two hours free to visit this beautiful village. You can stroll through the charming streets of its seaside neighborhood and check out its churches and chapels. If you head to  Piazza San Vincenzo , you'll discover a viewpoint with a unique view of Stromboli and the nearby islet of Strombolicchio.

Finally, we'll return to the boat and start the return trip, stopping for about 40 minutes at sea to enjoy a unique natural spectacle: the active eruption of the Stromboli volcano . A truly amazing sight at nightfall!

We'll end the tour with our arrival back at the port of Milazzo after about 10 hours of sightseeing.

Vacation in Stromboli

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting the Aeolian Islands, Stromboli is a must-see destination. With a geological history of 200,000 years , Stromboli is nicknamed the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean" for its active volcano and is the most dramatic of the Aeolian Islands.

Swim in black-sand beaches, walk among lush citrus gloves and watch the volcanic eruptions. The island is perfect for those looking for a relaxing vacation , but above all, for those who love nature and trekking.

The best time to visit Stromboli for excursions is either in April or May, while in the height of summer you can enjoy the beaches of the island and take a few boat trips along the coast.

How to get to Stromboli

The only way to reach Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands in general is by ferry .

In Stromboli there are 2 ports: Stromboli (to the north-east) and Ginostra (to the south-west). Both are connected to Sicily (through the ports of Palermo , Milazzo and Messina ) and to the other Aeolian Islands .

What to do in Stromboli

Stromboli offers several attractions to its visitors. In addition to its beaches, those who visit Stromboli do so for a specific reason: its volcano. The Sciara del Fuoco (Stream of Fire), a steep slope where lava descends from the crater, and the fireworks display created by the strombolian eruptions, represent the most fascinating natural attraction on the island.

Climbing the volcano is also one of the most unique activities in Stromboli. Book a guided excursion and fall in love with the island’s unique atmosphere. Furthermore, Ferryhopper suggests visiting the districts of Scari, Ginostra, Ficogrande, and Piscità. Stroll through their narrow streets, discover local shops and reach Piazza San Vincenzo .

In Stromboli, you can also relax on gleaming black-sand beaches and go on a boat trip to admire the island’s impressive coastline. Get closer to the Strombolicchio volcanic sea stack and the Marina lighthouse, and explore the cave of Aeolus .

Tip: make sure to visit the famous Fire Festival held in Stromboli at the end of August, where you will see international performers explore their fascination with the element of fire.

Beaches in Stromboli

The uniqueness of the beaches of Stromboli is their black sand . In general, the island’s beaches are small and secluded, mostly accessible by boat.

Here are 8 of the best beaches in Stromboli:

  • Lazarro : this beach is a 15 minute walk from the village of Ginostra. Thanks to its underwater caves, Lazarro beach is very popular with diving enthusiasts.
  • Forgia Vecchia : located right underneath the slope of the volcano, this is a relaxing beach, with transparent waters and black pebbles. You can reach it on foot by taking a path that begins at Scari beach.
  • Lunga : located in the northern part of the island (near the Piscità area), it is characterized by a wild and unspoiled nature. The beach doesn’t offer any visitor amenities and is perfect for young people. It’s also nude-friendly.
  • Ficogrande : this is the largest and most famous beach in Stromboli, and the only organized one. It’s equipped with umbrellas, deck chairs, refreshments, and a volleyball court. The beach is located in front of the Strombolicchio and is made up of volcanic pebbles and intense blue waters.
  • Punta Lena : this is a secluded beach, only reachable by boat, perfect for those seeking relaxation. It has a granite gray coastline and crystal-clear waters.
  • Ginostra : these natural pools are located near the village of Ginostra. Loved by divers, they are characterized by unique colors ranging from light blue to emerald green. You can only reach the coves by sea.
  • Grotta d’Eolo : this small beach is known for its cave that is formed by lava. It’s located behind the Strombolicchio and is a great place to watch the sunset.
  • Scari : located near the center of San Vincenzo, this is a relatively large beach made up of lava pebbles. From here you can admire the Strombolicchio. Near the beach you will find a few bars and restaurants.

Stromboli Boat Tour – Visit Europe’s Most Active Volcano

Table of Contents

About Stromboli Volcano

Stromboli is a volcanic island and active volcano in the Tyrrhenian Sea just north of Sicily. It is one of the most active volcanos in the world, with small eruptions every 20 minutes or so. It’s possible to take a Stromboli boat tour, stay overnight on the island, and even climb the volcano.

Around 300 people live on the island with the constant threat of a large eruption ever-present. There is a black beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing (if you can put up with the odd sulfurous whiff) and a small village/town serving tourists.

In July 2022 I took a Stromboli tour and spent an afternoon exploring the island, before heading back out to sea to watch an eruption of Stromboli at night. My plan had been to stay overnight and hike to the top of the volcano, however I got sick on the road and my schedule meant I didn’t have enough time.

Below I will recount my experience and tell you how you can take your own Stromboli boat trip from Sicily.

Boring stuff: I have visited each of the places I recommend and give you my honest opinion, warts and all. All photos are my own unless otherwise stated and may not be reproduced without permission. Affiliate links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Tours to Stromboli

There are many different Stromboli boat tours available, and I chose this one departing Milazzo in northern Sicily.

I paid €70.00 which included the boat from Milazzo, a stop on the Aeolian island of Panarea, the trip to the volcano and a Stromboli night boat tour.

Seeing Stromboli at night is recommended as it’s much easier to see the lava spitting out of the crater.

Here are two of the best tours:

Panarea and Stromboli Night Tour – Book Here

Stromboli Hike to Sciara del Fuocu – Book Here

It’salso perfectly possible to plan your own trip without taking a tour too. Just book one of the daily ferries and you can visit for the day or stay overnight at one of the accommodation options on the island (see below). Book Your Volcano Tour Today

How Long Is a Stromboli Boat Tour

Milazzo to Stromboli Ferry

Most tours last all day as it takes at least a couple of hours to get to the island from Milazzo. The tour I chose was 10 hours in total. This included:

  • two hours travel time to Panarea
  • two hours on Panarea
  • one hour to Stromboli
  • three hours on Stromboli
  • two hours return trip to Milazzo

How Much Does the Tour Cost?

Food, drinks etc on the islands are extra and be aware that it’s a lot pricier than on the mainland. I paid €6.00 for a beer that cost no more than €2.00 in Milazzo.

I paid €70.00 which included all transport from Sicily to Panarea, Stromboli, and back again.

How to Book a Stromboli Tour

I booked online through Get Your Guide. On the morning of the tour I went to the office opposite the ferry terminal . Here they scanned my online ticket, handed me a paper ticket and instructed me to cross the road to the waiting Stromboli ferry. Book Your Volcano Tour Today

About the Tour

Volcano in the Ocean

The boat had two large inside decks, an upper and a lower. There was also seating out the back and front, and it was possible to walk around the boat outside to take pictures. There were also clean toilets on board.

Panarea and the Aeolian Islands

You’ll have a chance for a couple of hours to explore the small village and beaches of Panarea. Some of the highlights include:

Capo Milazzese – the main village on Panarea with shops, cafes and restaurants

Cala Junco Bay – a beach in the shape of a Roman amphitheater perfect for snorkeling and diving

Cala degli Zimmari – a sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and swimming

Stromboli Night Tour

The highlight of the trip of course is visiting Stromboli and walking around in the shadow of an active volcano. While I was there I swam at the black, volcanic beach and the water was exceptionally warm. It also got deep very quickly!

The main beach is rocky and painful to walk on barefoot, so make sure you bring sandals or flip-flops.

Saint Vincent’s Square / Piazza San Vincenzo is the main square on the island with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and market stalls. You can also see the house where Ingrid Bergman lived while filming Stromboli terra di Dio (Stromboli Land of God).

Stromboli Night Tour

Smoking Volcano

The last part of the Stromboli volcano tour is saved for last, namely the Stromboli night tour from the boat. We set off just before dusk and waited for the sun to set.

Smoke billowed from a crater at the top and as it got darker you could make out bursts of orange flashes into the night sky.

We stayed for maybe thirty minutes to an hour and I was completely transfixed. It wasn’t as spectacular as some of the pictures I had seen (like the stock image I’ve used at the top of this article), however it was still very impressive to be able to witness these small eruptions.

Things to Note

Getting to Porto di Milazzo is easy as it’s in the centre of town. If you are coming by train from Palermo or Messina then you’ll need to take bus number 2 into town.

See the location of the port here here

Stromboli Tour

It should come as no surprise that travelling to an active volcano does come with some inherent risks. With this in mind, it’s important that you have a good insurance policy in place.

When hiking the volcano you should only do so as part of an authorised guided tour which includes safety gear such as a helmet, flashlight and experienced guide.

Do not attempt to hike up to the crater on your own as this is basically suicidal.

Our partners at SafetyWing are able to provide insurance cover even if you’ve already left for your trip. You can get a free, no-obligation quote here .

Stromboli Hotels

There are plenty of Stromboli hotels, apartments and rooms for rent for overnight or longer stays. Below is a small selection for each price range.

Budget: Case La Pergola

Mid-range: Hotel Ossidiana

Luxury: Il Gabbiano Relais

Apartment: Apartment Mareblu

Having spent an entire day discovering Panarea and walking around Stromboli was an experience I’ll cherish forever. The fact that I was able to witness some small eruptions made it all worthwhile. My only regret is not doing the Stromboli hike, but I will return and do it in the near future.

Recommendations for Private Boat Trip to Panarea & Stromboli from Milazzo

Great experience! Very clean boat, in perfect condition and very well managed by Alessandro who was very pleasant and attentive all day. We would have stayed 15-20 minutes longer at Stromboli (magnificent explosions!) but it is true that the return is long despite the speed of the boat.
